It's late autumn in Edinburgh and late autumn in the career of Detective Inspector Rebus. As he tries to tie up some loose ends before retirement, a murder case intrudes. A dissident Russian poet has been found dead in what looks like a mugging gone wrong. By apparent coincidence a delegation of Russian businessmen is in town - and everyone is determined that the case should be closed quickly and clinically.

But the further they dig, the more Rebus and DS Siobhan Clarke become convinced that they are dealing with something more than a random attack - especially after a particularly nasty second killing. Meanwhile a brutal and premeditated assault on a local gangster sees Rebus in the frame. Has the inspector taken a step too far in tying up those loose ends? Only a few days shy of the end to his long, inglorious career, will Rebus even make it that far?

57 of 59 people found the following review helpful. The Last Rebus? By Jim Tenuto Ian Rankin has crafted one of the best mystery series ever written. While many novelists fade after half a dozen books, in "Exit Music" Rankin has kept the character of John Rebus as fresh, human, and complex in the seventeeth novel in this series as he was when he first appeared in "Knots and Crosses."The sense of inevitability, frustration, and a man out of sorts is palpable. Rebus, ten days away from mandatory retirement, tries to tie up a career's worth of lose ends through the murder of a Russian expatriate poet. The connections between the "underworld and the overworld", the threads that run through the fabric of Edinburgh's society, once again weave a rich and satisfying story. There is vintage Rebus, verbally abusing a senior member of the force and breaking all the rules but none of the laws. There is the shadow of Big Ger Cafferty, Rebus' Moriarty, falling over the city. There is Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke, the London transplant, who tolerates, understands, and reveres her iconoclastic partner. In a trip to Scotland in late 2005, we spent a couple of days in Edinburgh. The city itself has always been one of the richest characters in Rankin's work. We peered down Fleshmarket Close, visited the Parliament building, stood near the Mound, and had a whisky at the Oxford Bar. All have featured in one or several of the novels.A strong sense of character, a strong sense of plot, and a strong sense of place make the John Rebus series literature.

Bukowsky In Ian Rankin's "Exit Music," Detective Inspector John Rebus is ten days away from retirement, a prospect that appeals to him as much as root canal. His superiors eagerly await the departure of this maverick, with "his mistrust of teamwork" and his "two-decades-plus of bets hedged, lines crossed, and rules broken." Although John gets results, he rarely does anything by the book, since he has little regard for authority or proper procedure. It is a miracle that this chain-smoking and whiskey-guzzling detective has lived long enough to turn in his warrant card. Rebus's protégée, Detective Sergeant Siobhan (Shiv) Clarke, has mixed feelings about her friend and mentor's departure. She is grateful for everything he has taught her. On the other hand, his unorthodox methods are troubling and she is impatient to get out from under Rebus's imposing shadow.Their final case together begins as an apparent mugging that results in the death of Alexander Todorov, an émigré Russian poet living in Edinburgh. Todorov was a dissident who was vocal in his criticism, not only of his former government, but also of the new class of Russian oligarchs. He considered these multi-millionaires to be materialistic, corrupt, and greedy--selfish men who spend their ill-gotten gains on fancy clothing, high-end cars, pricey real estate, precious metals, and expensive artwork. Was Todorov bludgeoned to death to silence his scathing criticism of his countrymen? A subsequent murder adds to the mystery, and Clarke is placed in charge of a team with a challenging and time-consuming mission. They must ascertain if the two crimes are related and if so, who was behind them. Rebus is intrigued to learn that his archenemy, a gangster knows as Big Ger Cafferty, may be involved. Before he walks off into the sunset, Rebus would love to bring down this vicious thug who has been a thorn in his side for years."Exit Music" is an incredibly complicated and dense police procedural with a large number of characters, suplots, and red herrings. This four hundred page novel, which is sluggishly paced at times, could easily have been trimmed with no loss of coherence. On the other hand, the author gets high marks for depicting police work realistically, demonstrating the tedium of endless conversations with potential witnesses (some of whom lie or omit information), the sifting of every bit of physical evidence, and the search for a key fact that could break a case wide open. He also brings Edinburgh to life and deftly portrays the political and economic changes that may lead, one day, to Scotland's independence from Great Britain. Rebus is a delightful rogue who is content to say and do what he likes now that he is days away from packing it in. Although he is not in charge of the investigation, John blithely goes off on his own to follow his hunches wherever they may lead. What makes this book memorable is Rankin's stunning epilogue--a tour de force of superb writing and dramatic surprises. The fact that the ending is not neat and tidy makes it a fitting coda for the checkered career of Detective Inspector John Rebus, a man who has always lived on the edge and thumbed his nose at conventional wisdom.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. parting is such sweet sorrow... By Richard Cumming John Rebus is facing mandatory retirement from the Edinburgh police in nine days as EXIT MUSIC opens. Rebus has lost many things over the course of Rankin's marvelous series. A few years ago they banned smoking in the pubs. That was a heavy blow. Now in November of 2006 Rebus is on the verge of surrendering his badge.Rankin is prescient in his plot. Russian oligarchs are infesting Scotland. Making deals. Building networks of contacts in high places. Perhaps even ordering murders? Rebus doesn't like it.His arch enemy Big Ger Cafferty is still on the loose, mocking Rebus. Over the years they have built a strange fraternal bond. Pursuer and the pursued. Rebus will miss him mostly because he won't be able to arrest him.Siobhan Clarke has taken over most of the duties Rebus once savored. He is being put out to pasture sooner than later. They pull him off a big murder case. Fans of this series would expect that. They also know that John will ignore the commands of his superior officers. Is this the end for Rebus? I don't think so. Rankin will surely start a new series about Siobhan Clarke and Rebus will be a valuable resource and sounding board for her as he savors his retirement.Rebus will be playing his music. Nursing a single malt. Puffing away. His cell will ring. Rebus will be back on the case.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More Than You Bargain For By MaryEllen Johnson I bought Trail Ways Pilgrims today, and was not disappointed. Patricia Flaherty Pagan's work often features strong women, so I correctly expected this collection to follow suit. These are the characters with whom the author identifies. However, one story in this collection, Bargaining, struck a chord with me. The protagonist is a strong woman, for sure. She is a also an authentic woman, a hurting woman, a tempted woman. This concise and well-spun story reminds us of the lies we tell ourselves, and the way we justify our choices. Ms. Pagan's narration leaves me wondering what I would do in a similar situation, and the quandary has returned to my mind several times this afternoon. That effect, the lingering question that sassy with the reader, indicates high quality writing. I strongly recommend Trail Ways Pilgrims.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Powerful literary fiction By Eden Royce Hagan makes her stories read as though they took no effort to write. With the topics she covers, I’m sure that isn’t the case.Trail Ways is written with unflinching maturity. These stories place women in not just challenging situations, but at crossroads—where they will have to make choices sure to change the path their lives are on. (And the lives of those surrounding them.) But Hagan’s characters are drawn with steel in their spines. These are not only strong women who react to what life throws; they are captains, taking control of their destines. When they stand at the intersection of the divergent paths Hagan places in front of them, you know they have prepared themselves for either outcome.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. “When does need trump right? And how much risk ... By Liberry Jam “When does need trump right? And how much risk can I afford?” Patricia Flaherty Pagan’s narrator asks herself these difficult moral questions in Bargaining, and the reader is forced to wonder what his or her own answers might be. This is the case with all the stories in Trail Ways Pilgrims: Flaherty Pagan’s female characters face choices both remarkable and mundane. They may live in Asia or North America, mourning babies lost or anticipating babies to come. They may turn a blind eye to a lover’s indiscretions to stave off loneliness, or exchange writing tips with an admitted rapist in their living room. One thing they will never do is bore you.

Review "...heartwarming and lively, filled with surprises, laughter, and joy, and well worth reading and experiencing vicariously." - A Time for Us"I loved the quirkiness and unique vibe the author brought to the story. Everything adds up to make an historical romance that I won't soon forget." - Bitten by Romance"[A] clever and enchanting story about self discovery, trust, and friendships" - Books I Love a Latte"I have never read Susanna Ives before this book, but I will be going out to track down her other releases. From start to finish, this book draws the reader into the story and takes them on an almost epic adventure full of fake accents, distinctive characters, self-revelations, and a little bit of scandal." - Once Upon a Romance"If you like your historical romance to be very serious stuff, turn away! If you want to laugh out loud while reading about two seemingly mismatched people find their way out of almost-certain financial ruin and into love, grab Wicked, My Love!" - To Each Their Own Reviews"Sensuous foreplay heats up the pages but never overtakes the captivating story or the charming, witty characters." - Publishers Weekly"Wicked Little Secrets are Ives' forte, but it's the laugh-out-loud humor and slapstick comedy that will have readers crying with joy. Ives' sprightly repartee adds to the merriment, yet the poignancy that lies beneath will touch readers' hearts. Ives delivers on every level." - RT Book Reviews, 4 1/2 Stars, Top Pick!"This was a fun book with a surprising side helping of women's rights and financial sense. I enjoyed the writing style, and all the characters." - Romance @ Random"This was a great story by Ives and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!" - Historical Romance Lover

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Witty, romantic and so enjoyable! By eyes.2c When our current stock of Victorian romance writers truly remembered the existence of Mary Wolstencroft a whole new genre of heroine came into being. The Bluestocking, she's formidable, generally portrayed as women's rights explorers, often overlooked or social inept. Women that today's women can thank as part of the progress to enfranchment, the recognition of their abilities and their freedoms. Not only that, but they present an excellent opening for writers to incorporate intrigue, humour and indepth social commentary. And that's just what Susanna Ives has given us. She's given us Isabella St. Vincent. Isabella is a gem. She has an off beat presence that wonderfully combines the different with the interesting. She is an intellect who wants to embrace her womanhood. The how of doing that is the hard part. I laughed at the language Isabella uses, thank you to Aunt Judith, for her womanly parts. I loved her ability to work out mathematical odds and problems. I loved that her abilities helped countless numbers of women to turn their lives around. If only Isabella could turn her personal relationships around! Her childhood arch enemy is Lord Randall but in their pursuit of matters that touch the very foundations of their joint banking interests, that childhood frisson between them takes on a life of its own, down paths neither has contemplated. A witty, somewhat different and most enjoyable read!A NetGalley ARC

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I wanted to love this book, but couldn't get passed the childishness of the main characters By Adria Reyes * I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.So...Fumpy Isabella St. Vincent and the smooth Lord Randall have known each other since they were children and have been adversaries ever since they got into a childish spat over the sexes. As adults and bank partners, they try their best to avoid one another, until Lord Randall’s political career and their bank interests are on the verge of being destroyed by scandal. Now the financial genius and the rogue have to work together to figure out who is trying to sabotage everything they worked for, all while trying not to tear each other apart, or fall in love.I really wanted to love this book, honestly I did!Isabella was the financial genius in Wicked My Love and I appreciated that she started off with a different outlook on life. She craved financial stability and had the brains to make it happen for herself. She was in an unheard of position for a woman of her time: She had responsibilities beyond securing a husband and having children and that always intrigues me. Sadly, her intelligence and ability to be somewhat independent was pushed to the side instead of being a very important part of who she was. Lord Randall was no better, hanging on to a childish spat was one thing but to continue to act as he were a nine year old with his teasing. All he needed to do was stick his tongue out and stomp his foot at Isabella. I’m all for bickering between the two main characters but not like this. The sex scenes were written like the writer was a prepubescent teenager. Phrases like “sacred feminine vessel” and “man part” quickly doused whatever heat Randall and Isabella had going. Okay, I get that “sacred feminine vessel” was how her cousin probably referred to her, um, lady bits but couldn’t Isabella have discovered a better name for it? It was just so silly and over the top that it just killed the mood and the chemistry between the two characters! For a character who had a cousin that supported women’s rights and didn’t believe in keeping girls ignorant about the facts of life, Isabelle was even more ignorant than most. Then there was the actual relationship between the two, Isabella never quite found her footing as part of a couple. At times it seemed like she was content to let Randall do the thinking for both of them, even though she was the one with the intelligence. She never really established herself as an independent entity, nor did she have a strong sense of who she was when she wasn’t with Randall. To me, she needed more of a backbone and personality to make her a solid, stand alone character. Her identity shouldn’t have depended on whether Randall was around or not. All in all, I thought Isabella was too dependent on Lord Randall’s presence that I felt she wasn’t her own character but rather, just a pretty extension of Lord Randall himself.Wicked, My Love wasn’t all bad though. I did love the twists and turns as Randall and Isabella tried to unravel the mystery of just who wants to bring them down and why. The entire adventure was exciting and that’s what kept me reading when I would have otherwise put this book down. I do want to make one thing absolutely clear though: My issues with this book are strictly about the characters and their relationship with one another. Not the author’s style. I happened to enjoy the setting and the plot so YES I will try this author again before I go and say Susanna Ives isn’t for me. I just won’t be listing Isabella and Randall as my favorite characters.Final Verdict: I'm willing to try this author again.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Fun but not entirely Frivolous By Book Gannet I loved this book! It’s so fun and frivolous, yet at the same time the characters are racing around trying to avert a real crisis which could have terrible consequences – particularly for the heroine. Oh, and that heroine happens to be super smart, while the hero is gorgeously charming, all set in early-Victorian England. I adored it from start to finish.Isabella is wonderful – she’s a smart woman of independent means and has made her father’s bank three times more successful than when he ran it. She’s also the author of a best-selling book helping woman to make the most of their own funds, no matter how modest they might be. Yes, all right, so her aunt rewrote most of her book and filled it with melodramatic human-interest stories in the most Gothic manner, and she would never measure her own success against her father’s because she feels like she could never measure up to him, and she keeps all her emotions severely suppressed for fear of messing everything up, but that doesn’t deny the fact that she’s smart, caring and funny. She’s a little awkward socially, she can’t dance, she doesn’t always understand jokes and she’s lost without her glasses, not to mention terrified of the prospect of public-speaking, but she’s sweet and real and I couldn’t help liking her, and loving the ridiculous escapades she gets entangled in, with or without Randall’s assistance. The entire hay-pregnancy episode was brilliant.I found Randall a bit more exasperating. Yes, he is handsome and charming and so funny, but he’s an idiot when it comes to Isabella and his political career. He’s so busy telling her he can’t marry her, while at the same time wanting her to confess undying love! There were a few times when I wanted to shake him, but when it comes down to the crunch he does everything he can to save Isabella, and I love how they are together when they both stop thinking about who and what they are. The house-breaking scene was so funny, and I loved the Irish footman-d’amour nonsense.Funny, warm and charming, with a plot that swings between farcical and serious, I loved how light this historical felt while it also dealt with more serious issues like runs on banks, child labor and orphans, not to mention the rights of women. Yes, perhaps it would have been nice if Isabella’s aunt had been less of a clichéd man-hater, but there’s so much humor in her advice that I had to like her too.In all I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a joy to read and I will definitely be looking out for more from this author.(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

His concept of Flexible dieting is a lifestyle (`a calorie is a calorie and which source it comes from will have no effect on body composition') and as long as we understand the concept of IIFYM and macros then it is easy to follow his ideas. Scott James is a reliable, informed and very entertaining and supportive coach. Recommended for everyone dodging the obese ball. `Now the very buff and hunky SJ offers more information about all aspects of fitness, health and nutrition. With a superb visual Introduction we see S.J. moving form a skinny Geek look single digit body fat Adonis in BONY TO BRAWNY - AND he shares that journey with us in this exceptionally well-written book. `My goal is to show you exactly what works and what doesn't, and to propel you on your journey to the body of your dreams. I had no direction in life and merely survived day to day… I was alive, but I wasn’t living. I went through stages of binge eating and yo-yoed from skinny to skinny-fat.” This new volume is how to make a skinny body a brawny body and in is he covers his topic with photos, exercises, recipes, references, a keen glossary at beginning the beginning of the book so we start reading with an educated outlook, and as the book progresses he presents a no nonsense, what to buy/eat/exercise philosophy that is sound, backed by research and works!S.J. covers 24 Bulking Myths Exposed, How a Killer Physique Is Forged, Genetic Expectations—How Much Mass Can You Gain?, Understanding YOUR Body, Body Type and Bulking Adjustments, Should I Bulk?, The Body Fat Equation, TRAINING: Don’t Major In Minors, Strength, Reps ‘N’ Size, The Role of Cardio in Bulking, Busting Through Plateaus. On a hot July day in 1894, in a southern city still reeling from the death and destruction wrought by the Civil War, a four-year-old boy is found hanging in a woodshed, his eleven-year-old brother crouching behind a stack of firewood.

Jubal Leatherbury is a little boy of unusual sweetness and beauty, his face a child’s version of his handsome father Henry’s face. Henry Leatherbury grew up fatherless in New Orleans during the period known as “misrule,” a bizarre combination of martial law and complete lawlessness, in the years following the Civil War. His own sensuality responded to the licentious atmosphere of the city, and he entered young adulthood as a reckless, undisciplined youth who denied himself little. Married unwisely, and singularly ill-equipped for fatherhood, Henry faces the challenges unique to parents of wounded children when he discovers that his young son has been the victim of ongoing and terrifying abuse. In the story of Jubal Leatherbury, love tests the measure of the power of cruelty in the forming of a man and in the shaping of human society. Set in the post-Civil War South, it takes a unique look at race relations post-slavery, as the races begin the process of viewing each other through different eyes. Characters that quickly become real and memorable experience joy and sorrow, love and hate, human tragedy and triumph, but when the book is closed, it is love that will be remembered.

About the Author Ms. March grew up in a solidly white farming community in north Alabama, the granddaughter of German immigrants. She came of age in the early 1960s, working as an emergency room nurse in Birmingham, at the height of the civil rights struggle. She later worked as a midwife in a refugee camp in Bangladesh, and as a home health nurse in the mountains of northern Pakistan. She claims a unique perspective on the commonality of the human condition, a perspective brought to bear in her first novel, a story about people that might have been set anywhere. She lives with her husband in Mobile, Alabama.

This is a memoir written by a former slave in the U.S. during the 19th century. From the preface: "The author does not think that any apology is necessary for this issue of his Life and History. He believes that American Slavery is now the great question before the American People: that it is not merely a political question, coming up before the country as the grand element in the making of a President, and then to be laid aside for four years; but that its moral bearings are of such a nature that the Patriot, the Philanthropist, and all good men agree that it is an evil of so much magnitude, that longer to permit it, is to wink at sin, and to incur the righteous judgments of God. The late outrages and aggressions of the slave power to possess itself of new soil, and extend the influence of the hateful and God-provoking "Institution," is a practical commentary upon its benefits and the moral qualities of those who seek to sustain and extend it. The author is therefore the more willing—nay, anxious, to lay alongside of such arguments the history of his own life and experiences as a slave, that those who read may know what are some of the characteristics of that highly favored institution, which is sought to be preserved and perpetuated. "Facts are stubborn things,"—and this is the reason why all systems, religious, moral, or social, which are founded in injustice, and supported by fraud and robbery, suffer so much by faithful exposition. The author has endeavored to present a true statement of the practical workings of the system of Slavery, as he has seen and felt it himself. He has intended "nothing to extenuate, nor aught set down in malice;" indeed, so far from believing that he has misrepresented Slavery as an institution, he does not feel that he has the power to give anything like a true picture of it in all its deformity and wickedness; especially that Slavery which is an institution among an enlightened and Christian people, who profess to believe that all men are born free and equal, and who have certain inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The author claims that he has endeavored since he had his freedom, as much as in him lay, to benefit his suffering fellows in bondage; and that he has spent most of his free life in efforts to elevate them in manners and morals, though against all the opposing forces of prejudice and pride, which of course, has made much of his labor vain. In his old age he sends out this history—presenting as it were his own body, with the marks and scars of the tender mercies of slave drivers upon it, and asking that these may plead in the name of Justice, Humanity, and Mercy, that those who have the power, may have the magnanimity to strike off the chains from the enslaved, and bid him stand up, a Freeman and a Brother!"
