By Carol Smittened by Jamie Farrell is both #2.5 in the Misfit Brides of Bliss series and also part of the Snowy Days and Steamy Nights: Come In From the Cold anthology which I am currently reading. You know, there is no better way to get acquainted with new authors than to read an anthology of short stories. This is how I found Jamie Farrell. This story is sweet and full of hilarious little anecdotes. The characters were loveable and heart warming.It may have taken Dahlia Mallard a little longer than some to find her purpose in life but she has found it now. For the last two years she has taken over ownership of the Milked Duck Ice Cream Shop from her Aunt that has passed away in the little town of Bliss. Winter is a tough time, though for an ice cream shop. She would have been okay with the money she had saved up if she hadn’t been swindled by her ex boyfriend and lost her entire savings. You see, Dahlia would do just about anything for anybody.She has heard that the sexy sought after rock star Billy Brenton is in town. Dahlia wants to have an ice cream tasting for adults only. Her unique recipes like Chocolate Orgasm and Cherry Popper are sure to be a hit, if she could only get people to come to the tasting. A sure way to gain interest is if she can get Billy to promise to attend. But Dahlia has no way of finding Billy, until his drummer and best friend, Mikey Diamond’s house burns down across the street, and Dahlia offers him a place to crash.Mikey Diamond is not the relationship type at all. But there is something about Dahlia. He knows that she really only wants him so he can get Billy to go to her taste testing. But the longer they spend time together, the more intrigued he is by her. Dahlia is so set on saving people but maybe she is the one who needs saving.“Mikey Diamond didn’t need saving. Dahlia did. From him.”Dahlia is determined to not be swayed by this sexy drummer. It made me laugh out loud and also squeezed my heart. I fell in love with the characters. I want to know more about the little town of Bliss and its residents. I most definitely want to read more by Jamie Farrell.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. LOVED! By jennifer schultheis This story was very entertaining and I couldn't wait to find out how it was going to play out. I loved all the characters in this story and thought they were developed quite nicely and were definitely intriguing. Mikey made me smile right off the bat and Dahlia was such a nice person that you couldn't help but hope, that she got her happy ending. I loved how Mikey and Dahlia interacted with one another and will definitely be re-reading this one again. I also love the secondary characters especially Mari Belle. Fantastic story.

A Fun Read By Shari B Smittened by Jamie Farrell is about finding love when least expected between a ice cream shop owner and a drummer from a country music band, after reading this book you will be craving ice cream. I really enjoyed this book, very likeable characters. A novella that is packed full of a story.

A Rich and Taut Thriller By Jack Scott If you’re looking for a masterclass in how to open a thriller, I suggest you read the first two pages of Barbara Nadel’s latest book, Land of the Blind. It’s the start of a rich and taut mystery, expertly crafted and atmospherically set in the extraordinary city of Istanbul. Following the discovery of a woman’s body in the hidden depths of the ancient Hippodrome, dog-eared, chain-smoking, Inspector Çetin İkmen, leads the reader to the achingly satisfying reveal. İkmen is eminently likeable. He puffs and shuffles his way through the politically charged streets of the city like a Turkish Columbo. Nadel’s writing is fluid, crisp and crystal clear. As the clever plot weaves its way, she deftly lifts the veil on the contradictions of contemporary Turkey: the clash between secularism and Islamism, freedom and conformity. But this is no personal polemic against the direction of modern Turkey, more an astute observation seen through the eyes of the cleverly cast characters, from Inspector Süleyman and his controversial liaison with a feisty gypsy in the hills, to Ahmet Oden, a despised and despicable property mogul. Add into the mix the riots at Gezi Park and you end up with a compelling and electrifying read. In some ways, the city is as much a protagonist as the canny sleuth. A brilliant seventeenth book in the Çetin İkmen series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good Entry in Series About Contemporary Istanbul By Balletgoer A good entry in the Inspector Ikmen series. It is against the background of the 2013 Gezi Park demonstrations and many of the characters are caught up in the tensions between secular Turkey and the current government. The murder of a Greek archeologist and a newly discovered corpse from the era of the 1955 Greek riots set in motion two police investigations and as usual they bring the reader into the history, streets and sights of Istanbul. Ikmen like all good series detectives is a fascinating character , and in his case an unusually sane and grounded one.

About the Author Rafael Yglesias is a novelist and screenwriter, the son of writers Jose Yglesias and Helen Yglesias, who instilled in him the need to aim for psychological realism in his writing. Raised in Manhattan, he dropped out of high school to finish his first novel, Hide Fox, and All After, which was published in 1972. After writing three novels by the age of twenty-one, he stopped writing books between 1976 and 1984 and concentrated on starting a family, making a living by writing screenplays, none of which was produced. He returned to novels in 1986 with Hot Properties, followed by Only Children in 1988, The Murderer Next Door in 1990, Fearless in 1993, and Dr. Neruda’s Cure for Evil in 1996. He also resumed writing screenplays, with the first to be produced, Fearless, based on his own novel. In all he has had five films produced. After the publication of Dr. Neruda’s Cure for Evil, Yglesias took another break from writing novels, mostly because of the illness and death of his wife. He returned to novels with the publication of A Happy Marriage, an autobiographical story of his first marriage. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A disturbing book that needed to be told By Marjorie Cunningham This is a bold book about child molestation that doesn't sugar coat anything. Its stark truth can be hard to read. There are some terribly disturbing scenes. At first I thought the book was too explicit and that such detailed scenes were voyeuristic, but in reading online articles by the author, I understand his intent better. He is trying to put a spotlight on how these children are gradually seduced by their molesters, what constitutes child sexual abuse, the confusion, shame and guilt of these young victims and the long-term effects of the abuse on their lives.Rafael Yglesias has been outspoken about his own abuse at age 8 and it would seem that some of this book is autobiographical. There is no doubt that a screenwriter in this book is Roman Polanski, whom the author worked with on "Death and the Maiden". The question arises as to whether any of the other characters are real people. But whether they are or not isn't integral to the power of the story.The explicitness of the abuse scenes will cause you to live inside these children and suffer each moment of their indignity along with them. While so many traumatized children such as these never speak of the crime perpetrated upon them, this book gives those children a voice so their story can be heard.I won this book in a giveaway with the understanding that an honest review would be given.

Compelling Story with a Powerful Message By Earl This powerful novel puts the reader in the position of several children who were molested as they struggle to understand what is happening and whether they are themselves to blame. You are also in the position of these same children as adults, dealing (or not) with the aftermath of the abuse. The scenes are mildly graphic but far short of anything pornographic or voyeuristic. The emphasis in the scenes is on the mental processes of the child, the constant confusion and questioning.Having said all that, this is also a very well-written novel with many levels of suspense which keep you turning the pages until the very end. You will feel invested in these characters and want to discover how the story ends, which in many ways is also a beginning.I received this from LibraryThing Members Giveaway for an honest review.

Challenging read By Shelleyrae In The Wisdom of Perversity, Rafael Yglesias tells the story of three childhood friends, reluctantly reunited as adults when the man who sexually abused them more than three decades earlier is finally exposed as a predator, yet seems likely to get away with it.What Yglesias does well in The Wisdom of Perversity is illustrate the lingering feelings of shame and helplessness victims of abuse carry into adulthood. Despite their best efforts to move past the emotional trauma associated with Stein the memory never fades, ambushing them in their weakest moments. Yglesias also challenges the idea that one type of abuse is better or worse than another. Though Brian was 'only diddled' and Jeff was anally raped, their suffering all these years later is indistinguishable, it's clear it is not so much about the physical act but the emotional repercussions.Steins predatory nature is truly horrifying. He seduces the parents of his victims with bonhomie and largesse, so that the children feel unable to seek their help. The scene in which he abuses Julie while in the midst a roomful of adults, was incredibly distressing to read, and the powerlessness of the children is heartbreaking.Unfortunately I didn't relate to any of the characters as adults, though I was sympathetic to them. Brian is a successful screenwriter with intimacy issues, Julie is a unhappily married library archivist with a teenage son, and Jeff, on his third marriage, is a famous film director. Exposing Stein has the potential to devastate their personal and professional lives.Said to be inspired by the molestation Yglesias suffered at age 8, The Wisdom of Perversity is a challenging read, especially in terms of the subject matter, but ends on a surprisingly hopeful note.

While rescuing an English noblewoman from a French gunship, Mainwaring is captured and sent to a dungeon on Mauritius. Escaping only to discover that Pallas has been destroyed, he sets out to gather more ships to fight the French. After the monsoon and the deus-ex-machina arrival of a British frigate (carrying Mainwaring's fiancee), Mainwaring's climactic battle with his enemy, the Chevalier Rigaud de la Roche-Bourbon, ends with the lady showing that she's a crack shot with a pistol. Explicit gore and hints of kinky sex don't make up for the sloppy writing (three times in the space of a page, characters "hiss" rather than speak their dialogue). After rounding the Cape of Good Hope and reaching a designated latitude, young Yankee skipper Ned Mainwaring opens the admiralty's secret orders and learns that he and his ship Pallas are to sail around the island of Mauritius to interpose themselves between the marauding French navy and the fledgling British outposts in India. The treacherous Frogs seek to dominate the Indian trade, and if they succeed, His Majesty's Empire will die aborning. Before reaching Mauritius, Pallas tangles with a French man-of-war that strikes its colors suspiciously early. The victorious Mainwaring boards the beaten ship to check it out and is promptly kidnaped, joining Lady Caroline Grenville, the pretty sister of an earl whose ship had been taken by the French. Dumped, whipped, and jailed on Mauritius, Ned must be rescued by his officers--but while the rescue is taking place, Pallas is sunk and her crew murdered by Ned's archenemy, the sadistic Chevalier Rigaud de la Roche-Bourbon, who now holds (and has cruel designs upon) virtuous Lady Caroline. By Mike Brooks This series, and particularly the fourth and evidently final episode, borders on the implausible. It is so imaginative in its plotting, however, that it can be forgiven for its sometimes over-the-top sequences. It has become one of my most enthralling 18th century naval reads after a lifetime of being hooked on this venue. I can't wait to tackle his next series and hopefully many more to follow.

An Authentic Sea Yarn By Amazon Customer A more cunning than usual title arrived at later in the story had me quite on edge waiting to find out who actually was Captain Monsoon . When i did find out, I was greatly amused but won't " spill the beans" so as not to spoil it for other readers.

Coconut oil is like a super ingredient for a lot different purposes By Dale Norris Jr. I had no idea that coconut oil is great for so many things like cooking fora example? I always considered and connect it to some kind of beauty lotions and supplements but cooking? No. Also, how cool is to use it as a toothpaste, wow! Also for bug bites - awesome. Part about chakras is amazing, my wife just started practicing yoga and she keeps talking about chakras all the time. I am getting more interested too, I guess I will try yoga soon.

One of the books here has great explanation of how to use the oil and how to prepare it at home. Also there is an extra tips for chakra balancing which I'm doing for the past 6 months and I feel much better and there are some tips and exercises for muscle reliving which I'm planing to start doing.

On that trip, passing beautiful natural scenery as well as picturesque villages without even seeing them, he finally realized he had been fooled by her mild manners and loving personality into believing himself loved by the sweetest, most tenderhearted creature in existence.

Roussel the Precursor-An Out of the Way Read By Just Sayin' I am willing to bet that this is the only review of Locus Solus that will ever appear on Amazon.Roussel was looked on as a precursor of Surrealism - the strangest things are matter-of-fact - and Le Nouveau Roman - his detailed descriptions anticipate Robbe-Grillet.The book is fun and fascinating, but also hollow at the core, just like Robbe-GrIllet. The enlisting of 19th Century technologies - hot air baloons mustered for a machine to make a monumental mosaic out of extracted human teeth of varying colors and states of decay - is delightful. It is as if Rube Goldberg had no sense of humor, and was filing for a patent, complete with all important details.This is an out-of-the way read, great fun, but undeniably tedious at points.
