By Amazon Customer Lott takes an interesting approach, that we need to de-stress and find ways to combat inflammation, not just kill off the infection. He gives many herbal suggestions for combatting symptoms and lets you know which herbs are known/likely to be hard on your thyroid, which I really appreciate. As with anything, exactly what worked for him won't work for everyone, but I think everyone could likely get something out of the book anyway. He also stresses the importance of adding ONE HERB at a time...I can't tell you how many times I've gone to a doc and been prescribed several things, one of which I reacted to. You get to stop taking everything, heal from the reaction and start over. One of those common sense things that are somehow easily overlooked.(One note to fellow lymies--I have trouble actually reading a book anymore, so I have my kindle read to me. Cannot say why this works better, but for me, it does. Also, the kindle says phytoestrogen really funny.)

I especially enjoyed the list of natural substances that inhibit various cytokines. Well done! It is great to see more information getting out on Lyme disease as it is often ignored. His writing style is easy to follow, he offers simple step-by-step instructions and provides plenty of documentation to back up his suggestions. I found this book to be very helpful.

Schoolgirl Lydia has run away from Wales, where she has been evacuated, and is heading back to her home in Suffolk. However, when she arrives, it is to find that her village seems to have been abandoned, the houses deserted. Making it to her home, Lydia finds her mother gone and an injured German soldier in her place. ..Over the next few days, we gradually learn about Lydia’s family – her brother Alfie, parents and the traumatised refugee boy, Button, who Lydia was entrusted to care for. We also have the unfolding memories of the soldier, Heider, his time spent fighting in Poland and Norway , why he has ended up in Lydia’s home and how he knows her name. You sense, from the first, that unseen forces have driven these two characters together, although you never feel that the situation is anything other than believable.Much of this what is wonderful about this novel is the fact that things are often inferred, rather than spelt out. The author sets the scene wonderfully, giving his readers the benefit of assuming they are with him in the story and perfectly capturing that time when the threat of invasion was very real. I found the characters of both Heider and Lydia extremely sympathetic and found the novel compelling, tense and extremely well written. This is an engaging read, from an author who has shown from his first novel, that he has much to offer. I look forward to reading his future work with great interest.I received a copy of this book, from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

It starts at a very slow pace and first I thought it was a childrens' book. I was very wrong. The way the storylines weave back and forth is a sure way to keep your attentions. The emotions were very genuine. So hard to find original and compelling stories after reading for 55 years, but this book is one of them.

Simon The story unfolds over the course of six days in a vacated English house called Greyfriars near the village of Willemsley. Time-frames alternate as well as points of view from each character's perspective. The author drops in hints throughout the narrative that there is more to the story than what is being portrayed. There will be revising of memory as the story progresses as both protagonists are not always reliable witnesses to the events of their past.The main male character Heiden was a musician, initially a man of artistic temperament; a cellist who used his hands to interpret the great classical works in an orchestra in Berlin. The love of his life, Eva, was a violinist in the same orchestra, a kind and gentle woman who he was planning to marry. World War II has interrupted both their lives; Heiden enlists in the German army and Eva becomes a nurse in a mental hospital. Lydia is an eleven year old evacuee who has run away from her temporary placement in Wales to return home to find her mother gone and her house empty. Her father and older brother had already gone off to fight in the war. When Heiden suddenly and inexplicably breaks into her house and threatens Lydia, her behavior alternates between acquiescence and defiance.Despite the present action of the story being compressed into only six days, the author is quite successful in conveying an atmosphere of shared loneliness and disconnection from their environment, with both characters wanting to return to the pre-war past. Initially they are both wary of each other, enemies circling in distrust. There is much suspicion and curiosity, lurking and spying. Yet both want to be accepted by the other. Enclosed within a world populated only by themselves, the narrow confines of Greyfriars leads not only to a mutual isolation but also to a kind of intimacy that vacillates between brutality and tenderness. Circumstances create an exclusive but terrible world of two.Lydia, for all intents and purposes, is orphaned and looking to bond with the only adult in her life. She is bereft and is often awkward in her attempts to please Heiden. The threat of rejection and his hostility provokes outbursts and withdrawal. Lydia sees in Heiden a resemblance to her missing father and continues trying to make herself more attractive to him so that he will accept her. Heiden does assume the role of protector, eventually treating Lydia as a proxy for the child he would never have with Eva. But a deeper need in Heiden is to transform himself, in order to negate the past that destroyed everything he cared about, including his own character. He attempts to reinvent himself, constructing a new identity complete with backstory, imagining himself as he wants others to see him. But the memories keep welling up, reaffirming who he is. The more he tries to become someone else, the more he becomes the man he already is - resulting in a catastrophic delusion and bringing about an act that is more brutal than tender.

By Mind-Body-Spirit The author has written a story about a woman whose life was making her numb and who wanted to change that. Angela took a huge leap of faith to begin a new life in a new place; her willingness to risk it all for love, leaving her comfort zone far behind, is admirable. Although this is an engaging story, Angela's willingness to risk may the most charming part of it.Following her instincts caused her real disappointment in the love arena, but it was the beginning of a wonderful adventure in new ways of living her life. Cast adrift on Mount Desert Island, ME, Angela digs in and creates a life for herself, minus the guy who was the catalyst for her move to Maine, and yet rich with friends and acquaintances who make up her new family. After a few setbacks, Angela begins to experience the joy and freedom of doing her own thing teaching Italian cooking, which is a major improvement from her mind-numbing life in the city. You will enjoy sharing her ups and downs as she creates for herself, a new life in the wilds of Maine.This is a very enjoyable book which anyone who has also taken a great leap of faith in her own life, will appreciate. From the Impressionist view of land and sea from atop Cadillac Mountain on a foggy day, to the librarian who takes such an interest in one's reading habits that it borders on invasion of privacy, Christina Baker Kline's third novel paints Mount Desert Island, Maine with such accurate detail that some of its inhabitants might wonder if they sat for the portrait. This is a novel about family, about food, about sense of place. Ultimately, it's an examination of what it takes to make a life. At one point, Angela Russo, the protagonist of the story, muses on Maine's state slogan - "The Way Life Should Be." She turns it upside down, reading it as an existential question: what is the way life should be? The answer, of course, is one each of us must puzzle out for ourselves. But in the telling of her tale of one woman's wrestling with this universal concern, Kline provides a roadmap for us all.

I could emphatise with Martha and Juliet very easily.The past story had a feel of pride and prejudice about it ( I watched the series on netflix a few days ago so very fresh in my mind... studied at school too)I liked the parallels to what was happening in the present day. Beautifully written, I was transported to another time and place. I am looking forward to more titles by this author.

Logan is actually the owners son and, when the shock wears off, the two find their attraction is mutual. A brisk holiday romance with picnics and day trips leads to a declaration of love and an invite to an ancestral home in Ireland, the 1800s Carissima, built by Lorcan's Great-Great-Grandfather. Juliet is not eager to visit Ireland (presuming she will have to move there permanently), preferring the fast paced life of London and she wonders if her relationship with Lorcan is worth the effort.Meanwhile, the history of Carissima and its original residents, come to light with the discovery of a diary in the library of the house. Martha, a governess, was passionately in love with Edward but was brought to Ireland during their courtship, with him remaining in England to secure their financial future. Their story interwoven with the one of Juliet and Lorcan, and Carissima becomes the link.This is Maria Murphy's debut novel and taking on 120 years of historical fiction is no mean feat. The reader gets a quick glimpse of modern times in the one page prologue and is then whisked back in time to Berkshire, England, 1888 and the world of Martha and Edward. The Pershaw family have taken her under their wing but the agreement is one they seem to benefit from, as they gain a full time governess for their young daughter Beatrice. When the young doctor is called to the house to attend to Beatrice's fever, Martha is smitten. Edward is also in awe, and within days they declare their love for each other. Similarly, in 2010, Juliet and Lorcan are 'twitterpated' within hours and plans to be together are launched upon with great gusto. All within days of meeting. I have to admit at raising my eyes to heaven at this stage. The Story meandered for a bit, with excess narrative (the church fire was not required in the novel, in my opinion) and I very nearly gave up. The thing that kept me going was Martha. I wanted to know what happened to her. What had happened to her great love with Edward? I had lost interest in Juliet and Lorcan, for sure, but Carissima appeared on the scene and brought the story to life. The descriptions of the property were limited but enough to make me want to visit. The grounds with walled gardens, a lake and rolling, gentle hills sounded idyllic. The whispers in the night and the unexplained turning on and off of lights made for more page turning.Eventually, upon discovery of the 1800's diary in the library, the story found itself. The missing threads were tidied up and the atmosphere came to life. Martha's story was the heart of this book. It just came a little too late. I would have liked more from the Pershaws and less of Juliet and Logan. Maria can certainly write though. You can tell she really connected with the character of Martha and with the idea of Carissima. I'm sure the historical fiction genre is her niche, perhaps for a more mature reader and I think we will see may more beautiful covers, with her name on them, over the next few years.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Unexpected with an original plot By Suze Lavender Juliet's mother sends her daughter to Florence, to have a proper holiday. Juliet is a photographer and she has to travel a lot for her job. When she arrives in Florence she's expecting to stay in an empty apartment. Logan, the son of the owner of the apartment had the exact same idea, to come there for a holiday, so his mother's apartment wouldn't be empty. Now that they're both there neither of them wants to leave and they decide to share. They're getting along brilliantly and their holiday is a lot more romantic than they both expected when they arrived.In 1888 Martha keeps the new doctor, Edward, company before he's getting back to his practice in the middle of the night. She's a governess of a little girl who's ill because of an infection. She loves Edward instantly, but they can't be seen in public with each other. He has to make a success of his practice first and Martha has no dowry. She promised to take care of the little girl and she's intending to keep that promise. Martha and Edward are meeting in secret and are planning to get engaged when they both have something to bring into the marriage. Unfortunately they're being separated when the family has plans to move to Ireland.In Ireland Martha and Juliet's stories are coming together. There's something that they have in common. Both women are strong and they're fighting to be with the man they love. For both of them that isn't very easy. Their stories are beautiful and I couldn't wait to find out if they would get their happy ending or not. For the Love of Martha is such a beautiful story. I was hooked from the beginning. I loved this book. Martha's and Juliet's stories are both equally fascinating and I enjoyed reading about their lives and their characters.For the Love of Martha is set in different countries. In each of them something significant happens. Everything becomes clear when Juliet and Logan are in Ireland. I had no idea where the story was going and I quite liked the original plot. This novel has so many unexpected twists and turns. They kept the story interesting and I was moved from beginning to end.

This Booklet Is Useless By John Vincent Alexander The book by Gary Taubes, "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About it," is very well written, thoroughly supported by citations, and quite helpful. I spent several hours outlining and summarizing the book, in the hopes that my grandkids could use the information I had distilled from it.My outline is 14 pages long and is not as clear as I would like it to be. So, I wanted to see how the professional writers at Eureka Books distilled the essence of the book. The "Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review" by Eureka Books is a sad, unhelpful, mess.Key Points:Gary Taubes' book has 19 chapters. He makes several key points in each chapter. The Eureka booklet has 9 "key takeaways." Every one of these points made by Eureka actually contradicts, or at best misses, the points made in Gary Taubes' book.Sources:Gary Taubes' lists over 200 sources for his factual assertions. Taubes' sources include the relevant medical and scientific studies on fat gain/loss over the past 400 years.The Eureka booklet lists none of Taubes' sources, and instead lists and discusses 9 sources that were not used by Taubes. For example, the Eureka booklet cites someone named Julie Fredrickson as the sole support of 3 of its 9 "key takeaways."When I googled the link to Julie Fredrickson, I found that she calls herself an entrepreneur, and also claims that she has successfully lost weight. Eureka has thus ignored virtually all of the scientific literature on weight-loss in favor of a non-scientist's anecdotal story.Analysis:The Eureka booklet does not contain any analysis of Taubes' book. The author of the Eureka booklet displays a lack of understanding of the basics of biology. The Eureka author assures us on page 25 that eating meat and leafy green vegetables "greatly reduces tri-glycerides, a type of fat, that if saturated in the bloodstream, can contribute to a heart attack." The term "saturated fat" actually refers to something different from the level of tri-glycerides in the bloodstream.I do not recommend this booklet.

Buy the real book, not this silly thing By ignatius brady This book is just poaching off of Gary Taubes and his extraordinary work.This false summary provides no real content. It's so brief as to seem almost to be playing a prank on the buyer.There is no real attempt to summarize or analyze the material. The takeaways aren't an accurate representation of the real points of the book.A seventh grader couldn't turn-in in this synopsis for credit. The teacher would accuse the student of having just skimmed the material.

Short and Sweet By lizzzi I was interested in hearing Gary Taubes's key points, but honestly, with the holidays coming up and lots to do, did not feel like sitting and taking the time to read the whole book. I may read it later. For now, this little 31-page summary was exactly what I wanted. Just the facts, no flab.

This, to me, is the crux of the story. We all ask ourselves, once in a while, "what could have been, if.....?" And we tend to fill in the blank with something much better than what actually happened. These holes in our lives aren't refillable. this book shows that we must grow around them. This is a thought provoking text spun into a tale of wonder. We all possess Ordinary Magic. We just need to realize it.,

Schumacher-Rasmussen An Ordinary Magic is a dizzying, suspenseful, thoughtful, and inventive mix of magic realism and thriller. Jason Thibeault does a terrific job of exploring a wide range of tensions—belief/non-belief, community/individualism, father/son, control/surrender—ultimately revealing that such binaries, though irresistible, are ultimately incapable of capturing the complexity of human existence. If that makes it sound like this is a literary novel, well, it is. But Thibeault never sacrifices character development and story in the name of philosophy, nor does he favor intellectual investigation over emotional exploration. All of those things are present in this terrific novel, but never at the expense of the story. And what a story it is—a father trying to rebuild his family in the face of almost insurmountable odds including a vicious sorcerer and his own personal unwillingness to see and accept what's right there in front of him. Thibeault's prose crackles, and if he occasionally dwells a bit much on description, what evocative description it is. By the time the book ends, you know and love Panon and his island town intimately, and you're fully invested in their intertwined destinies.

It is the family and what the true magic is for Panon. The magic that is true and real here is love. Panon’s love for his town, his people and his family. It is this love that shatters all the illusions and keeps him fighting for his son. His son that doesn’t believe in magic-the magic of the spirits. His son that feels his father is disappointed in him and goes off to the capitol to find his way to America. His son who Panon loses sight of things and what matters because of Dela asking for Jaime.This book is about finding the magic within that comes from love. As Panon fights the evil of the Bougne to save his son and village, he also is battling himself and that is the wonderful dualism this book has. We have two battles> The external battle with evil and the internal as well. The internal battle against the pride we all carry, the loss of belief in ourself and trying to find our way back to believing in others and love again. We see many sacrifices along the way in the fight against Bougne and the struggle of Panon to find what really is the best magic of all.The writing is unique in that we have that dualism of a battle. Panon is fighting many demons and it has you trying to see which demon will win. His inner demon or the one he is fighting for his son. The story is intriguing and masterful in its design. It has you believing that the battle is with Bougne but as you go on you see that there is more than just this battle and you are drawn to find out more about the dynamics of what drives Panon and how he learns what is meant to be at the end to help him believe again and fight the ultimate fight.
