What Every Woman Knows is a four-act play written by J. M. Barrie. It was first presented by impresario Charles Frohman at the Duke of York's Theatre in London on 3 September 1908. It ran for 384 performances, transferring to the Hicks Theatre between 21 December 1908 and 15 February 1909. The play was first produced in America, also by Frohman, in 1908 at Atlantic City on 18 October 1908, transferring to Broadway, at the Empire Theatre in New York City in December 1908. The production starred Maude Adams and Richard Bennett. Written before women's suffrage, the play posits that "every woman knows" she is the invisible power responsible for the successes of the men in her life. Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 – 19 June 1937) was a Scottish author and dramatist, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. The child of a family of small-town weavers, he was educated in Scotland. He moved to London, where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him in writing about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about this ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. This play quickly overshadowed his previous work and although he continued to write successfully, it became his best-known work, credited with popularising the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously. Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents. Barrie was made a baronet by George V in 1913, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1922. Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, which continues to benefit from them. James Matthew Barrie was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, to a conservative Calvinist family. His father, David Barrie, was a modestly successful weaver. His mother, Margaret Ogilvy, had assumed her deceased mother's household responsibilities at the age of eight. Barrie was the ninth child of ten (two of whom died before he was born), all of whom were schooled in at least the three Rs, in preparation for possible professional careers.

What Every Woman Knows, by J. M. Barrie

About the Author J.M. Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children of hard-working parents in Scotland's jute-weaving industry. Fascinated by stories of her own life told him by his mother, he was determined to write, finding work on the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edinburgh University. In 1885, he moved to London as a freelance writer and successfully sold the Auld Licht Idylls, a volume based on his mother's tales. By the time Peter Pan opened on the London stage in 1904, Barrie had written more than thirty novels and plays, many autobiographical and several of them major hits such as The Little Minister, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton. Knighted and awarded the Order of Merit he continued writing into old age. He died in 1937.

Barrie's "What Every Woman Knows" premiered on Broadway in December 1908 at the Empire Theatre and ran for 198 performances with Maude Adams in the lead as Maggie Wylie. It was revived on Broadway in 1926 and ran from April to December for 268 performances with Helen Hayes in the lead role. It was briefly revived on Broadway a third time in November 1946 for 21 performances with Eli Wallach playing one of the ensemble and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as the butler. With the play now 100 years old, it remains an interesting piece. Maggie Wylie is a plain country girl whose family despairs that she will never be able to find a husband because she's not good looking. A young student John Shand comes home from the university and tries to burglarize their house, not to steal anything but to sneak in and read the many books in their house. Shand left the university because of a lack of funds. Maggie's brothers James and David and her father Alick decide that they will front Shand the money to get his degree IF he will sign a contract that after graduation he will marry Maggie, providing that she wants to go through it.Act II picks up six years later. John Shand has not only graduated, but he has just been elected to a seat in Parliament. Maggie offers to release him from his contract, but John announces to the election night audience that Maggie is the future Mrs. Shand.Act III takes us yet a few more years into the future and John has become a successful politician known for wit that has even caused his sayings to be known as "shandisms." The Comtesse is an elegant upper-class woman who discovers the truth that Maggie, who modestly claims only to type her husband's speeches, is responsible for much of the witty language and humor that has made him famous. She even influences his platform such as supporting women's rights. However, a complication is thrown into the mix as John, who is fully convinced that he is responsible for his own success, decides that he is really in love with the Comtesse's niece Sybil. John gives Sybil a ruby pendant on his second wedding anniversary to Maggie and announces his love for Sybil. Maggie knowingly implores him to delay the announcement of their separation which will probably ruin his political career until after a major political speech he is set to deliver. She further asks the Comtesse, who has become an admirer of the quiet way that Maggie supports her husband and defers to him, to invite her niece Sybil and her husband John to the Comtesse's country home so that John can work on his speech. John is convinced that Sybil will inspire him.Act IV picks up about three weeks later. The bloom is off the lily as far as John and Sybil's romance. Neither can stand the other. Furthermore, John has sent a draft of his speech to his political friend Venables who cancels Shand's invitation to speak because the speech lacks his usual spark. Maggie has meanwhile "typed" a new version of the speech and forwards it to Venables just as she arrives to announce her intention to return to the country with her brothers. Sybil breaks up with Shand, much to his relief. Venables loves the new speech. Shand discovers how much he is dependent on Maggie. Maggie says as the curtain falls, "Every man who is high up loves to think that he has done it all himself; and the wife smiles, and lets it go at that. It's our only joke. Every woman knows that." Finally, the couple laughs and reunites as the lights fade."What Every Woman Knows" is a bit dated. Maggie's willingness to defer to her husband may seem quaint to our era where romantic relationships are more partnerships. However, the action and story are still gripping. Some of the British political customs are a bit unfamiliar Stateside. However, this is an interesting play that could be revived successfully with a strong cast. Enjoy!

I downloaded it for free not knowing in the slightest what it was or anything because no description existed at the time. I was surprised at it's being a play because it read almost like one but with such humour and asides that I wasn't really sure until reading the afore-mentioned review. It is a very good story and can really be read as such as well as a script. The characters can seem a bit dated but they are all so much 'there' that they almost live and breath. I would adore seeing this acted and really am thinking about bringing it to the attention of the community theater group in my area. Definitely worth downloading, especially since it's free so you'll be losing nothing and gaining a little gem of a play.

Nagel has created some compelling, memorable characters who drive the story and give readers a reason to keep turning pages toward the conclusion. And those who do are in for some unexpected twists, a few that will provide complete surprise. The writing is first rate. The plot chugs along, but readers will also find that, as in all great literature, there is a deeper story being told that just what's on the surface. Over the centuries, mankind has demonstrated a deep capacity to inflict tremendously dark violence upon itself. And whether it’s beheadings, car bombings, serial killings, or random shootings, giving innocent victims a voice from their graves is what good police work is all about.

In Matador of Murder, former FBI agent Patrick J. Mullany presents how the use of case experiences has substantially helped in the profiling of criminal behavior.

In the early 1970s, Mullany, together with fellow FBI instructor Howard Teten, pioneered the concept of offender profiling for law enforcement by the FBI. They believed people murdered as they lived, and different crimes had different patterns.

By examining cases including the murders of Robert Kennedy, Sharon Tate, and Susan Jaeger as well as several kidnapping cases, this remarkable book lays out various types of mental diseases and illnesses and the crimes those suffering from them tend to gravitate toward.

This book is a unique window into the historical beginning of criminal psychological profiling and how it can be used in solving a criminal case as well as a study of violence in America with direct application to society and corporate America.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Namely, jes' fine By enubrius Max Allan Collins is the most prolific writer since, and possibly including, Isaac Asimov. Unlike Asimov, whom I knew slightly and admired immensely, Collins is actually a good writer as well as idea man. This latest (as of this writing) episode, the second in the series featuring Jack Starr and his sexy step mom Maggie , is an oddity on any number of delightful levels. A spoof of the production of the musical "Li'l Abner" (here called "Tall Paul") it fascinates in that only Collins would think there are enough people who remember the comic strip, let alone the Johnny Mercer/Gene DePaul musical. For those that do, however, the none-too-subtle portrait of the players involved (including Edie Adams, Ernie Kovacs, Peter Palmer, etc.-we will pause briefly while the vast majority out there say:"WHO????" ) is a hoot. If Collins' history is a wee bit shaky (both "The Pajama Game" & "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial" were produced in 1954, not the 1953 of the story's setting), his style and sense of humor are impeccable. Buy this! Oh, and as an aside, demand Prime Crime bring Collins' other work for them back into print!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Flashy Detective Novel By Benjamin Boulden It is 1953, and comic strips are big business. Jack Starr, "vice president, chief troubleshooter and occasional bottle washer" for Starr Newspaper Syndication Company is on the job. Starr specializes in comic strips, and its biggest player is Sam Fizer's Mugs O'Malley, but Starr is in negotiations to pick up a new strip from another big hitter named Hal Rapp, which could be a problem since Fizer and Rapp despise each other.Things heat up when Fizer is found dead in his Waldorf-Astoria residential suite. It is staged as a suicide, and poorly at that; Fizer is right handed, but the gun is in his left, and the suicide note is a comics-style inked affair (making handwriting analysis useless). The obvious suspect is Rapp, but Jack is skeptical and with his "troubleshooter" fedora firmly in place, his private eye license in his back pocket, he starts his own investigation.Strip for Murder is cleverly plotted, humorous--tongue firmly in cheek from beginning to end--whodunit with a twist that needs reading for believing. It is heavy on dialogue, in a good way, and the descriptions of 1950's New York, Broadway in particular, and the syndication business are great fun. The prose is spirited in a smooth and whimsical manner--"Maybe ten seconds later, Maggie stuck her head in; more than her head, the uppermost, most exposed part of her. Very distracting neckline, that red gown."Even more distracting, Maggie is his widowed step-mother, and President of Starr Syndicates. His boss, you could say. The characters--from Maggie to Hal Rapp to a Police Captain named Chandler--are charmingly eccentric and make a compelling juxtaposition to Jack's hardboiled tendencies. A relationship that generates more humor than black eyes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Scandal in the funny pages By Craig Clarke Manhattan, 1953 -- Rehearsals are underway toward the opening night of the musical Tall Paul, based on the popular comic strip of the same name by Hal Rapp. Rapp's ex-employer (and chief rival), Mug O'Malley creator Sam Fizer, has threatened to sue, saying Rapp's characters were originally created by Fizer when Rapp was working under him on the O'Malley strip. To make matters worse, Fizer's estranged wife has been hired for a role in the musical. On Halloween night, shortly after a party at Rapp's apartment, Fizer is found dead in his own room -- an apparent suicide but with painfully obvious signs pointing to Rapp as a murderer. Rapp asks Jack and Maggie Starr for help. Maggie runs the Starr Newspaper Syndication Company, and her stepson Jack is a private investigator "with one client: the Starr Syndicate." (Maggie is a former ecdysiast only 10 years Jack's senior -- a situation that is a constant source of Oedipal-incest jokes at Jack's expense.)Rapp has offered his new strip, Lean Jean, to the Starrs, so they are very invested in keeping him out of jail -- especially since it looks like he is being framed. Jack takes on the case, hoping to remove the frame from Rapp before Captain Pat Chandler can nail it on tight.Though Strip for Murder has some basis in history, author Max Allan Collins plays around with the facts here more than with his other historical-mystery novels, which usually hew closely to the facts with just a fictional character thrown in.In fact, in this case, even the main participants' names have been fictionalized right along with the timeline of events and the characters' relationships, though their real-life counterparts can easily be discovered with a little research. Collins gives them names that aren't obvious caricatures, but realistic names in the style of the real ones. (Even the fictional characters in the musical get this treatment, like turning Daisy Mae into Sunflower Sue.)Artist Terry Beatty, Collins's collaborator on various comic projects, including Ms. Tree, serves up era-appropriate comics-style drawings at the beginning of each chapter, and also adds a cute feature illustrating the motives, means, and opportunities of all the suspects just prior to the denouement.Beatty's illustrations do a lot to keep the reader immersed in the world of comics, because once you've seen his renderings of the characters, it's impossible to imagine them any other way. Even with his work isn't on the page, it's still there in the mind's eye. So, though Collins likely had real humans in mind when he created these characters, I had Beatty's renderings in mine while reading Strip for Murder, which gave it a surprising "graphic novel" quality uncommon in a prose volume. The characters are as two-dimensional as the illustrations -- but that may be intentional given the milieu (Collins did write Dick Tracy for 15 years, and his lengthy experience provides fodder for some very welcome comics-business in-jokes). What's important is that Strip for Murder gives a remarkable snapshot of Manhattan in the 1950s and a mystery solution that is as surprising as it is satisfying.

Mystery, Suspense, Romance and Sex—I was like a fat kid with a slice of chocolate cake By Lorraine Joy If you are like me and you love mystery/suspense but you don't want to give up good romance, this is a great reading choice for you. This was my first Cynthia Eden book and it will not be my last. I love the creativity that went into creating the story line of “Eve” having amnesia. Eve’s depiction in general was well done. She was genuine, vulnerable and she had a little kick a@$ in her too. We get less from Gabe but we still have a very alpha male who is fiercely protective of Eve.The story is really enthralling. You will find yourself trying to figure out what happened and who did it from page 1. This is one of those books that disrupts your sleep pattern because you just have to know what happens next. It's got twists and turns and a well done ending that you might not be expecting. The fact that Eve has amnesia adds an interesting layer to the developing romance. Quite logically, Gabe is concerned about moving forward with a relationship with Eve given that she could wake up any day and remember that she was in love with somebody else. That bit of conflict adds a little angst to the story that is logical and doesn't cross the border into melodrama.I also really like the supporting cast of this book. Gabe works with an agency called LOST that finds missing people, the agency has an entire team of professionals similar to the team from the popular TV series Criminal Minds. The POV in the book rotates so that we sometimes get to see what the supporting characters are thinking and it's always interesting. Speaking of rotating POV, we also get to see what the killer is thinking sometimes which is also fascinating. This book and this author are going on my recommended reading list.Complimentary ARC provided by publisher (Honest review, includes all my usual bias but nothing extra)

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. 4.25 stars-fantastic start to a new series By Sandy S. 4.25 stars--BROKEN is the first installment in Cynthia Eden’s adult, contemporary LOST romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women of LOST (Last Option Search Team). This is former Navy SEAL and LOST founder Gabe Spencer, and artist/painter Eve Gray’s storyline.Told from several third person perspectives the storyline follows Eve Gray as she endeavors to uncover her past, her memories, and truth about what happened years before. A tortured and concussed Eve awoke in an Atlanta hospital with no memory and no idea what had happened; her only clue is a newspaper photo where a missing heiress who looks identical to Eve is said to be a victim of a serial murderer dubbed the Lady Killer. When the authorities refuse to believe her story, Eve seeks out the one person she hopes will help-Gabe Spencer-a virtual stranger but a man she knows will ‘find’ the truth. As Gabe begins to piece together what little information Eve can supply, our couple find themselves on Dauphin Island, Alabama where everyone knows Eve as Jessica Montgomery. What ensues is the unraveling of a suspense filled mystery, where a serial killer has targeted women who look exactly like the woman in question. As Eve’s memory returns, the killer strikes again leaving a path of clues in his wake. I guessed the identity of the killer almost immediately upon introduction although some readers may interpret differently the information and clues. The relationship between Eve and Gabe is one of immediate attraction but Gabe refuses to become involved with his client-even a beautiful and broken client such as Eve Gray. When Gabe suspects that the killer is close, his only recourse is to keep Eve closer; so close that our couple with eventually act upon their mutual attraction and sexual desires. The $ex scenes are intimate, realistic and moving. There are no erotic, graphic depictions but there is some definite fire and heat. The spirited secondary and supporting characters include the members and agents of LOST: ex FBI agent Dean Bannon, forensic specialist Victoria Palmer, psychiatrist and profiler Sarah Jacobs, and former detective Wade Monroe. We are introduced to the inhabitants of Dauphin Island including Jessica’s ex boyfriend police chief Trey Wallace, and her brother Pierce Montgomery. Many of the locals have a colorful history; Trey and Pierce are all too willing to reveal Jessica’s sordid past. Cynthia takes us into the mind of a killer: his thoughts, his desires, his need for revenge all the while he plans and searches for his next intended victim.BROKEN is a story of suspense; a murder mystery where a series of missing and murdered women resemble the one who got away. Cynthia Eden writes with passion and imagination. Her characters are real; their emotions tangible; and their histories heartbreaking. BROKEN is a fantastic start to a new series.

16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. There was no FUN in this book By Debbie Richardson I"m sad after reading this book, because there was SO MUCH potential in it! So many opportunities and so many great characters. I liked the concept of the team LOST, who they are, what they do, and I like building a series of books around them. I know this is a romantic suspense, but shouldn't there be some humor in it? This book was the flattest I've read in a while, just non stop who's pushing who around now, who's scared of finding out what they don't know, will she get her memory back, do we really WANT her to have her memory back, and so on.It's not sustainable tension, after awhile you're just like get on with it already. This heroine was brutalized and tortured, that's how this starts, yet she instinctively feels safe with a great big ole guy when she has no memory? Maybe that's it, she has no memory and is pure instinct, and her instinct tells her that Gabe is one of the good ones. I guess I answered my own question there.I think it's very hard to make your heroine amnesiac and a victim at the same time, then also try to make her likeable. She doesn't know who she is, so how are we supposed to? Yes, we witness her learning things about herself, but it feels like watching a lab rat in a series of staged events. Let's take her to familiar places and see how she reacts, for example. Let's expose her to all these people she used to know and see if that triggers her.I know that's not unusual in a story about an amnesia victim but it just seemed forced. We know one of these people she meets is going to be the killer, and I don't think that's a spoiler, going into a story like this you expect it. I find it difficult that none of the people she met triggered zero reaction. Course, I"m not a doctor or psychiatrist and I don't understand amnesia but you would think the same base instinct that has her trusting the hero SO implicitly would also trigger her around the bad guy. Especially given the history that unfurled at the end.So that brings me to my final point, there was no fun in this story. Shouldn't I have been entertained in some small way, even in a romantic thriller? Shouldn't I have had my heart pounding so hard at some point and so desperate to find out who did it, and once I did I just had a huge adrenaline surge of relief and was happy it all ended well? I didn't get that. Great potential for these characters but they failed to reach out and pull me into their lives. I regret that because more than any of the other two or three star books I've read lately this one really had the germ of "it" in it. Just wasn't pollinated.
