There is no cure for ADHD, per se, but there is freedom from it. Awareness flows through the brain, but thought traps us in it. The secret is simple, dis-identify with thought which pulls you into narrow perspectives where life is experienced entirely through the thinking brain. Simple, right? Well, simple doesn’t always mean easy, and we humans have habits and conditioning that can make things seem obscure and complex. In other words, I use the word simple the same way that the reality TV host introduces his wilderness survival show by saying, “Survival is simple, just don’t die.” It can be analogous to dis-identify with thoughts: simple, don’t think so much. Sounds easy, but there’s some essential unlearning and some new learning to do. In that sense, you can think of me as your wilderness survivalist instructor introducing you to your own abilities, teaching you to survive and thrive in your own inner wilderness. Thriving, rather than just surviving, will of course be entirely up to you. This little book is about relationships and how ADHD magnifies the fundamental challenge to every relationship - the relationship within each of us, to ourselves. It’s written as a guide to the spouse or partner of someone with ADHD and presents an introduction to first surviving; then thriving. All the while including practical modeling, as the title suggests, of being more aware within. Each chapter concludes with an activity and questions that the reader can bring to their own personal experience. In intimate relationships, the felt sense of isolation and the tyranny of the ego’s manifestations become, as mentioned, magnified and its effects proceed exponentially. One partner is frequently withdrawn while the other is left feeling helpless as to what they can do. How to Be With His ADHD is a guide to help readers get their own metaphorical “oxygen mask” in place, then begin assisting their spouse.

More like a new age book on de-stressing than providing strategies or help for dealing with ADHD spouses By A DeVal I am beginning to think all the other reviews here are complete bs and maybe written by paid reviewers. The book reads more like a new-age self-help book than how to deal with a spouse who has ADHD. The entire book talks about how you should find time to relax and just "let go," become one with things, etc. Basically the entire book tells you to just breathe and let it all go and that's how you cope/deal with the other person's ADHD. Really?? So, no possible strategies for trying to understand the thinking process for the ADHD person, or how best to communicate with that person better or anything. Basically, it's all on you to change your feelings/outlook and just suck it up and deal that your ADHD spouse does what they do. I found better advice online for free in ADHD forums. Needless to say, I sent this back to Amazon for a full refund.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A watershed of wisdom By Author Matthew Robert Payne I wanted to write this even though I am only 12% through this book. Adam has a wonderful take on what faith really is, and how we can have really powerful faith. He says that we need to know what the Holy Spirit's will is for our life so we can move out in faith in that will. We can pump ourselves up with false faith and believe in something till we are blue in the face, but if we are not moving according to the will of God , it simply won't work. Many people might not want to hear this message, but I have to say this is the first time I have heard an author speak like this when it came to the subject of faith. We need to exercise our will and practice hearing from God so that we can move out in faith in the things He tells us to do. When we are directed by the voice of God to do a certain thing, and we move out in faith, we will always achieve what we set out to do.The purchase price was certainly worth the insight I have gleaned in the first 12% of this bookI commend you to itWith LoveMatthew Robert PayneAuthor of Kingdom Nuggets: A Handbook for Christian living

"[...] The effect of these faces as a whole was toward goodness, candor, and imperturbable self-complacency rather than learning or mental astuteness; and curiously enough it wore its pleasantest aspect on the countenances of the older men. The impress of zeal and moral worth seemed to diminish by regular gradations as one passed to younger faces; and among the very beginners, who had been ordained only within the past day or two, this decline was peculiarly marked. It was almost a relief to note the relative smallness of their number, so plainly was it to be seen that they were not the men their forbears had been. And if those aged, worn-out preachers facing the pulpit had gazed instead backward over the congregation, it may be that here too their old eyes would have detected a difference—what at least they would have deemed a decline. But nothing was further from the minds of the members of the First M. E. Church of Tecumseh than the suggestion that they were not an improvement on those who had gone before them. They were undoubtedly the smartest and most important congregation within the limits of the Nedahma Conference, and this new church edifice of theirs represented alike a scale of outlay and a standard of[...]".

The Damnation of Theron Ware, by Harold Frederic

Review The Damnation of Theron Ware seems likely to survive...The combination of delicate mannerliness and merciless savagery with which Frederic sets about abasing Theron is not easy to describe; but, if one could make the admittedly prodigious effort of imagining an Emma written from the point of view of Mr. Elton by an ebullient exile from Utica, New York (and ending with the full power of an Irish-American Emma's scorn turned upon the luckless person), some idea of its shocking comprehensivity might be grasped. (Times Literary Supplement)Containing the realism of Howells, the moral complexity of James, and the comic manner of Mark Twain, the novel--a finer book, incidentally, than Lewis's Elmer Gantry--warrants reading. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)Of great interest both as a novel and as a double-barrelled social document. (Manchester Guardian)

From the Inside Flap Published in 1896, "The Damnation of Theron Ware or Illumination is a profound psychological portrait of the spiritual undoing of a guileless Methodist minister who is taken in by a rural townspeople's various progressive ideas, from liberalism to bohemianism, only to be spurned by them for being too conventional. Described by Everett Carter as "among the four or five best novels written by an American during the nineteenth century," the novel, as Joyce Carol Oates writes in her Introduction, has "shrewd, disturbing insights into the human pysche." This Modern Library Paperback Classic is set from the text of the authoritative Harold Frederic Edition.

A wonderful and shamefully neglected American novel By Stan Vernooy IMHO, this novel can and should be included with the other American novels that we cram down the throats of high-schoolers: Moby Dick, Scarlet Letter, Huckleberry Finn, etc. This is the almost painfully realistic story of a preacher who discovers that there is another world outside his previously sheltered existence. For many of us, this sort of discovery is a happy and broadening experience. But in Ware's case, his new discoveries cause him to reject all the good things about his old life, and to build fantasy castles in the air of his imagination. In his increasingly desperate attempt to escape into a fantasy life, he leaves behind many of his values and ethical standards - not least his responsibilities to those he loves. This book will hit a nerve for many readers - it did for me. It is easy for the reader to identify with Ware and realize only too late, as Ware did, that he is embarking on an illusory and self-destructive quest. Frederick constructed both the plot and the character of Ware perfectly, and this novel is worth everyone's time to read. You will keep thinking about it long after you have closed the book for the last time.

Moore "The Damnation of Theron Ware" starts out as a quietly damning portrait of small-town piety, but slowly gains momentum until, at the end, it hits you like a sledgehammer. The title character, a naive, self-satisfied young Methodist minister, is a cautionary figure for us all; introduced tentatively to a world of sophistication, he loses faith in all the old verities of his life, with nothing but a few poses and attitudes to replace them. Even at the end, trying to make a new start, his self-delusion is breathtaking. Harold Frederic had the misfortune to die at 42, just as he was starting to hit his stride as a novelist. Had he lived to write even another 10 years, he might be a household name today.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. One of my all time favorite American novels. By A Customer Over 20 years working as a bookseller, this is the novel I would most often recommend to customers who were seeking a truly entertaining out-of-the-ordinary novel. I've read it three times now, and am looking forward to a fourth in the next year or so. The main characters are fresh and utterly believable and they are surrounded by a fine cast of eccentrics. Frederic is a exceptionally visual writer. This book would make a fabulous movie.

An attempt has been made in these pages to trace the evolution of intellectual thought in the progress of astronomical discovery, and, by recognising the different points of view of the different ages, to give due credit even to the ancients. No one can expect, in a history of astronomy of limited size, to find a treatise on “practical” or on “theoretical astronomy,” nor a complete “descriptive astronomy,” and still less a book on “speculative astronomy.” Something of each of these is essential, however, for tracing the progress of thought and knowledge which it is the object of this History to describe.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. must read for astronomy buff By stargazing fisherman This book helps place in perspective what we think we know now about the great beyond. The history of the entire concept of the "Milky Way" galaxy and the widespread use of the term "galaxy" before astronomer's perceived that there was more than one galaxy was most revealing. This book has taught me to be a little more careful when I speculate about things yet unknown. What the author saw as most probable turned out to be not so. None of the speculation about the "Milky Way" had it as our "galaxy"--it was simply a mysterious band of matter that seemed to move both this way and that. You may want to skip parts of this book, but don't skip it altogether.

The Chinese and Chaldeans are quickly brought into the picture. It goes very linearly through time right up to the early 1900'sThis book was written in 1909, but don't let the old author's date put you off. If you want to find a book that takes a detailed (included full references) look at the early history of astronomy right through to Newton's viewpoint this is the book for you.The only drawback it I would have LOVED to have seen the illustrations that must have been in the very original printing - but this is still worthy of 5 stars. It is neither stiff nor dry reading either. It has a balance of approval on all the cultures and peoples who helped push the science of astronomy ever forward. It is more than a primer at 146 pages, but not so encumbered with data as to be intimidating to even a high school student needed great reference material for a report.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Short book, easy read By Steve C. This book is much smaller than I anticipated when I ordered it. It took just a few hours to read through and there was no new information compared to more complete books I have read in the past. If you have a teenager who might what to see what the history of astronomy is about, this would be a fine book for them. If you have been interested for quite a while and either read other books or viewed programs on TV in this subject, there is little to find in this book.

Jonathan Ascher, an acclaimed 1960s radical writer and cultural hero, has been dead for thirty years.             When a would-be biographer approaches Ascher’s widow Martha, she delves for the first time into her husband’s papers and all the secrets that come tumbling out of them. She finds journals that begin as a wisecracking chronicle of life at the fringes of the New York literary scene, then recount Ascher’s sexual adventures in the pre-Stonewall gay underground and the social upheavals that led to his famous book “JD.” As Martha reads on, she finds herself in a long-distance conversation with her dead husband, fighting with him again about their rocky marriage and learning about the unseen tragedy in her own apartment that ended with the destruction of their son, Mickey. Mickey comes to life in the space between Jonathan and Martha’s conflicting portraits of him, while Martha and the biographer tangle over the continued relevance of Jonathan’s politics and his unfulfilled vision of a nation remade. Martha learns about herself, finally, through her confrontation with a man who will not let her go, even in death.             Mark Merlis’s JD is a brilliant and harrowing view of a half century of the American experiment, acted out on a small stage by three people who cannot find a way—neither sex nor touch nor words—to speak their love for one another. Best Books of 2015: Fiction, Open Letters Monthly Finalist, Gay Fiction, Lambda Literary Award Finalist, Ferro-Grumley Award for LGBT Fiction, Publishing Triangle “Many years after a ’60s New York writer's death, his widow confronts their tumultuous marriage and private identities through his journals. . . . JD’s most masterful element is its treatment of these two characters, both of whom spent their lives groping for contentment like one trying to find a light switch in a darkened room. A great writer offers not just tight prose but also insight, a series of probing questions that extend from the fictional world into the real one. JD asks who its characters were, and in doing so, forces the reader to confront the intricate and fascinating politics of identity.”—Shelf Awareness for Readers, *starred review   “A truly impressive work of literary fiction, JD documents author Mark Merlis as an extraordinary novelist able to deftly craft a complex plot and populate it with a roster of inherently fascinating characters and memorable events. The result is an entertaining and engaging read that will linger in the mind long after the book is finished. Very highly recommended for both community and academic library literary fiction collections.”—Midwest Book Review/Reviewer’s Bookwatch “The fantastic JD (U. of Wisconsin), by acclaimed gay writer Mark Merlis (American Studies), is the writer's first novel in a dozen years. It's told in two voices. The first is that of the late gay writer Jonathan Ascher, and we hear from him through his journals. The second belongs to his widow Martha, who learns more about Jonathan than she ever imagined while reading the journals after agreeing to help a biographer of her late husband.”—Gregg Shapiro, Bay Area Reporter

JD: A Novel, by Mark Merlis

Review “An amazing novel: beautifully written, ingeniously structured, involving and dangerous. The two narrative voices here, a wife and a husband, are perfectly realized. Martha in particular is a remarkable character—I've never read anyone like her in American fiction. This is a chamber drama about one family, yet it’s full of windows that look out on the wider worlds of the Vietnam War, New York literary politics, and the gay revolution. Mark Merlis is a major writer and this is his best novel yet.”—Christopher Bram, author of Eminent Outlaws and Gods and Monsters“This is vintage Merlis: historical yet timely, intellectually rich, bracingly witty, unnervingly erotic, and, finally, deeply tender and affecting.”—Michael Lowenthal, author of The Paternity Test and Charity Girl“Powered by stunning emotional, intellectual, and erotic complexities, JD is a trenchant portrait of a marriage and its heartbreaking casualties and, at the same time, something far more ambitious: a disquieting meditation on how and why America’s best hopes went so stupendously awry during the 1960s and early 1970s. What emerges is an angry, loving hymn to a generation’s failure to create the world we so passionately believed we longed for. There is no better novelist at work in our troubled country right now than Mark Merlis.”—Paul Russell, author of The Unreal Life of Sergey Nabokov“An important novel that masterfully evokes the tensions and social upheavals of the 1960s and sheds a fresh and highly insightful light on gay liberation, family life, and American masculinity.”—Trebor Healey, author of A Horse Named Sorrow and Faun“Mark Merlis’s beautifully controlled and heart-wrenching novel JD . . . is narrated by aging New York widow Martha Ascher, whose husband Jonathan died from a stroke shortly after their son Mickey was killed in Vietnam. Jonathan was a writer on the anarchist left who believed in ‘an ecstatic blend of political and sexual liberation’ and who spiced up his home life with nocturnal prowling for willing young men. . . . But the novel’s tragedy lies in the relationship between Jonathan and Mickey, who meets his father’s rebellion with a destructive kind of rebellion of his own. Mr. Merlis unravels Mickey’s story with steely assurance and finely tempered prose. Like Martha, he is the victim of a man who ‘preached an ideal he couldn’t live up to.’”—Wall Street Journal“Yet again, Mark Merlis has written a deeply satisfying novel, one whose voices continue to echo in your head long after you’ve finished reading it. . . . It is a novel that weaves together the casualties of family and unaccepted sexual desires into a remarkable, if depressing, story of the U.S. in an era of huge social change.”—Gay and Lesbian Review Worldwide“Read JD as a suspense novel. . . . Read JD as a family saga, a page-turner of truth born from lies. Read it as commentary on the effects our past has on our future. Read it.”—Bay Area Reporter“Both strands of Merlis’ novel—Jonathan writing from the past, Martha speaking to us in the present—are vibrant, tense and alive. Merlis has written a profound book about sex and identity and family, about the perils of artistic ambition, about radical longing and the changing social fabric of America. JD is a beautiful novel.”—Towle Road

An Arrow's Flight is a book I consistently recommend to friends By Hugh A compelling, disturbing, powerful read.I have long been an admirer of Merlis' writing. An Arrow's Flight is a book I consistently recommend to friends, and I recently backtracked to read American Studies, which I found enjoyable. No one does this milieu better than Merlis. His evocation of the jaded intellectualism of the late 50s, 60s and into the Vietnam era is flawless. And as a stylist, he can't be beat. His is a muscular, well-paced prose that a joy to read. Once you immerse yourself in the world of Jonathan Ascher, it's difficult to tear yourself away. What I found disturbing about the book is what I'd call the "darkening inevitability" of the story's progression. Perhaps it's more a reflection on my own dissatisfying relationship with my father, but I kept asking myself the "Doesn't he realize that....?" (an unfinished question) throughout the book. And of course, the answer almost always comes back "yes, he does....but". This is, finally, an emotionally taut novel that shows the unhealthy triangulation of many marriages during this period, especially when one of the points of that triangle is a closeted man, foundering in a backwash of denial. No one does it better than Merlis and this some of his best work to date. Read it.

By Dave Shumway A widow reviews the journals of her deceased gay husband and discovers not just him, but also herself and their marriage. Well written, introspective and solid. Unlike any "gay" novel you've ever read. A+

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Merlis's fourth novel is a worthy sequel to his first ... By Hastings Wyman Merlis's fourth novel is a worthy sequel to his first three, all of which received literary prizes or rave reviews. The plot has twists and turns that keep the reader turning the page. And there's nothing usual about the story. It is a perceptive look into the New York literary world in the 1960s and today. The characters are uber-human and if not uniformly sympathetic, are compelling in their coping with the stresses in their lives.
