A Little Princess (Xist Classics), by Frances Hodgson Burnett

From School Library Journal Grade 4-8-The perennial fascination with Frances Hodgeson Burnett's classic story has made it a vehicle for a variety of adaptations. This audio presentation by the Saint Charles Players is an unsuccessful attempt to make the story into a radio-style version. The best work is done by the narrator who weaves story text between dialogue that is sometimes flat and sometimes overacted. Sound effects are helpful and the musical interludes pleasant, but overall this offering lacks dramatic intensity. The tapes must be played on a stereo player or part of the story can't be heard. A better choice for listeners who want to listen to the entire story would be the unabridged reading by Flo Gibson for Recorded Books (1987).Barbara S. Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library, Rocky Hill, CTCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Ages 5-7. Not just abridged but retold, this colorfully illustrated, large-format book has a text that's longer than most picture books but considerably shorter than Burnett's beloved novel. McClintock's sensitive illustrations, apparently ink drawings with watercolor washes, will certainly appeal to readers and book buyers of all ages. The period settings and costumes have a charm all their own, and the detailed pictures clearly portray Sara's transformation from privileged child to pauper and back again. Some scenes and dialogue here did not appear in the original book, but they serve to move the plot along more swiftly. The story loses a great deal of subtlety in theme and character development (as well as plot and setting) in its adaptation to picture-book format. Those who love the original will advise children to wait until they're old enough to read it. But children or parents who want a picture-book version will find this a very pretty one. By Margaret Fiore This book was a favorite of mine in my childhood, and, when I returned as an adult to re-read it to my own daughter, I discovered it all over again. This is a story about a different kind of princess than one might imagine; a princess that is an orphan - lonely, cold, hungry and abused. Sara Crewe begins life as the beloved, pampered daughter of a rich man. When he dies a pauper, she is thrown on the non-existent mercy of her small-minded, mercenary boarding school mistress. Stripped of all her belongings but for one set of clothes and a doll, Sara becomes a servant of the household. Hated by the schoolmistress for her independent spirit, Sara becomes a pariah in the household, with only a few secretly loyal friends. But through her inner integrity and strength of will, Sara Crewe maintains the deportment, inner nobility and generous spirit of a "real" princess. It is a fabulous story of the triumph of human will, and good over evil. This story is a real classic, and needs no re-writing to be as enjoyable and readable today as it ever was. Ask my 8-year-old daughter, who has already re-read it twice. Accept no substitutes, re-writes, abridgements or copies! This is a work of art, and should not be tampered with.

One of my childhood favorites By Joanna Daneman This book has familiar fairy tale figures, such as a wicked stepmother-like Miss Minchin, a fairy godfather, and an orphan protagonist who is a princess in disguise. It's the story of a little girl who endures some setbacks but reaches a happy ending not only for herself, but for those around her whom she helps even when she's pretty downtrodden. The writing is charming and Sara comes through as a person who is determined to maintain her values, through good times and bad. She has a definite personality and that is a good role model for any child. She stays true to her beliefs in being kind, mannerly, charitable and above all, herself. The magic in this book is unsurpassed in children's literature. When Sara comes home, wet and cold and neglected, to find that a magician has transformed her world, you can't help but be enchanted. I will admit to reading it again now and then as an adult. The charm is still there.Just a fun factoid; A Little Princess was originally a shorter story titled Sara Crewe, in a volume of children's novelettes by Burnett.

Sara Crewe had everything she ever wanted when she went off to boarding school in London. Her fashionable dresses, high quality jewelery, and numerous accessories made her one of the elite. Sara's life was almost perfect, until her eleventh birthday, when a devastating tragedy occurred changing her life forever. Sara received news very abruptly that her father had died, leaving her "penniless". Sara's teacher, Ms. Minchin despised her because she had become poor, and treated her cruely. Now Sara must face her troubles and prove to everyone that she can be strong and perservere through her difficult times. This book's moral states that everyone can be a princess when they put their minds to it. Being a princess is not about the fame and fortune, but about how you act in the situation into which you have been placed. You can be kind, or you can be mean; you can be content, or you can be greedy; you can be upset, or you can be optimistic. The book really relates to people who are going thruogh tough times in their lives and need reasurance and confidence.

The brave, inspiring story of one woman's recovery from a debilitating eating disorder, and the remarkable shelter dogs who unexpectedly loved her back to life.

“The dogs don’t judge me or give me a motivational speech. They don’t rush me to heal or grow. They sit in my lap and lick my face and make me feel chosen. And sometimes, it hits me hard that I'm doing the exact thing I say I cannot do. Changing.”

Pound for Pound is an inspirational tale about one woman’s journey back to herself, and a heartfelt homage to the four-legged heroes who unexpectedly saved her life.

For seven years, Shannon Kopp battled the silent, horrific, and all-too-common disease of bulimia. Then, at twenty-four, she got a job working at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, where in caring for shelter dogs, she found the inspiration to heal and the courage to forgive herself. With the help of some extraordinary homeless animals, Shannon realized that her suffering was the birthplace of something beautiful. Compassion.

Shannon’s poignant memoir is a story of hope, resilience, and the spiritual healing animals bring to our lives. Pound for Pound vividly reminds us that animals are more than just friends and companions—they can teach us how to savor the present moment and reclaim our joy. Rich with emotion and inspiration it is essential reading for animal lovers and everyone who has struggled to change.

I followed her eagerly and emotionally throughout the vicissitudes and uncertainties of her life, feeling her fear and pain, and rooting with all my heart for her and for the shelter dogs that loved her. Her skill as a writer and her warmth and depth as a human being make this book poignant and deeply moving, as well as educational.

The author describes her book as a "love letter to shelter dogs." Animals were her best therapy, and the only therapy that actually delivered her. Shannon really bares her soul in this story. It’s a story filled with lots of pain and setback—but ultimately a life of joy.The author does a good job setting the stage for her path to bulimia. She explains how she developed an obsession with her appearance in her early teen years, and continued the habit through college. Ironically, she was often praised for her lean figure, and others wanted to know "how she did it." She smiled demurely—of course not explaining the terrible truth.Well, her “secret” landed Shannon in a treatment center for eating disorders. She seemed to be the most normal of the bunch. Part of her treatment was with horses. She was soon “kicked out” of the clinic because her weight was too good. Another blow to her self-esteem. She felt like she just didn’t “make the cut.” It was like not "getting the A," or not being good enough.Fortunately for the author, a love for “shelter dogs” became her best therapy. “Shelter dogs continued to rouse me out of bed and fuel me with passions and purpose each day. I often felt the steadiness of the earth beneath me…I went to the recovery group with the desire to help not only myself but others.” Ultimately, Shannon became a counselor for others suffering from the same disorder. In once such encounter, she explained that “Shelter dogs were my medicine, and she needed to find hers.”I enjoyed reading POUND FOR POUND. I am delighted that Shannon found the “medicine” of rescuing shelter dogs. Thank you for sharing your personal journey! The author includes a helpful appendix on the history of Pit Bulls, and how that breed came to be so maligned. For another interesting read on how dogs can touch lives, I recommend Dean Koontz’ book, A Big Little Life.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An Engaging Story Of Redemption And The Power Of Four-Legged Unconditional Love By Donald Blackwell I think that too often we tend to pigeonhole books: “It’s a great book if . . . you are struggling with x or you want to learn how to do y or you like books about z” and it would be easy to do that with Shannon Kopp’s Pound for Pound – to relegate it to the narrow niche of books written by those who have courageously battled and managed to overcome an eating disorder (in Shannon's case, bulimia). But, it would also be a mistake. Shannon’s story and her book are so much more than that. Pound for Pound is an open window into the beautiful soul of a young woman struggling mightily, albeit at times self-destructively, to fill in the emotional gaps created by an alcoholic father, an unrelenting sense of self-loathing and a misguided belief that, among other things, she was neither worthy, nor capable of love. In the end, it is a story of friendship, compassion, perseverance, companionship, the power of four-legged unconditional love, redemption and resurrection – and it is one that is beautifully, powerfully, honestly and vulnerably told. I would highly recommend Pound for Pound for all who have ever known a personal struggle and those who have loved them. In short, I would recommend it for everyone!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Hilarious, non-stop fun and action By Kflier66 This is one of three (or 4?) Homer Evans stories. They're set in 1920s-30s Paris. Completely implausible, but well-written and very funny. Our original copy of "Hugger-Mugger" was printed in the 1940s and finally fell apart, so I bought this copy from Amazon to replace it. I also picked up the other novels in the series.Since there's no description on Amazon, I'll include this from the back cover of the 1942 Pocketbooks edition: [Homer Evans] "has a whacky group of friends who lead you all over Paris, up and down the Seine, through cafes filled with celebrities, taxidermist shops, subway stations, the musty dens of Egyptologists and the wards of a fantastic madhouse." "You can't fail to get plenty of gusty guffaws and spine-tickling chills as you join lovely Miriam Leonard, hard-drinking Norweigian-American painter Hjalmar Jansen" ...[and other colorful characters]... "to help Homer Evans solve this mystery that starts with the theft of a famous Watteau painting from the Louvre".And from the New York Herald Tribune, "This, as you might guess, is the funniest mystery on tap -- that is, the funniest by far, for all other comic thrillers seem pale and wan beside Mr. Paul's robustious works."Amazingly, all this is not an exaggeration. Even the minor characters are hilarious. In one scene, Miriam Leonard bursts into an attorney's bedroom: "Maitre Francois Ronron sat up in bed, blinking, and saw before him an angry young woman, unquestionably chic and attractive, who was waving his faithful clerk, Hector Camphre, as if he were a flag. 'Forgive me, Maitre, for bursting in on you like this, but the case I want you to take is one of great emergency. An innocent Frenchman's reason and his life are at stake. Your government is on the verge of committing a terrible mistake...' 'That's where governments are teetering continually, madamoiselle', he said."

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Stark but Worthwhile By Reader in Tokyo These comments refer to the first edition, published in 1993, not the revised edition published in 2007 with four additional newer works. The 1993 edition contained 12 short stories by as many writers, ranging from the late 1940s to the mid-1980s. The oldest writers in it were Ch'ae Manshik (1902-50), Kim Tongni (1913-95), who was described as the voice of humanistic nationalism, and Hwang Sunwon (1915-2000), who was called a lyrical humanist and the consummate Korean short-story writer of the 20th century. The youngest writers were Ch'oe Inho (1945-), O Chonghui (1947-), called one of the best female authors of the 1970s, and Im Ch'oru (1954-).Others included Chon Kwangyong (1919-88), Pak Wanso (1931-) -- another memorable female author from the 1970s -- Kim Sungok (1941-), Yun Heunggil (1942-) -- described as one of the writers best known abroad, Cho Chongnae (1943-) and Hwang Sogyong (1943-), called a major representative of the 1970s generation. So far as this reader is aware, these authors have lived mainly in South Korea, although some were born in the north, Manchuria or Japan. One, Hwang Sogyong, lived in the United States ca. 1989-93 after visiting North Korea, before returning to the south and enduring jail for several years.According to the brief introduction, modern Korean literature initially was modeled to a large degree on Western forms. In fiction the main influences were French and Russian realism, and realism maintained its predominance during the period the book covered. In the 20th century, writers frequently portrayed the country's harsh historical realities -- a rigid social and political structure, oppressive colonial rule by the Japanese, post-1945 chaos, and political tension and war resulting in division into north and south. Thereafter, as the north disappeared behind an iron curtain, in the south there was the imposition of military rule from the 1960s and accelerating industrialization, before democratization from the 1990s. Throughout these periods, major themes in the literature have been alienation, isolation and frustration -- forms of exile from the self, other people or society in general. In the collection, the stories from all decades were concerned mainly with broken families, urban squatters, ex-cons, political dissidents, social parasites, childless couples and soldiers lost in the mountains. Some of the stories seemed merely dark and drab, while others impressed for their artistry. Most distinctive for this reader was Chon's "Kapitan Ri" (1962), about a proud, xenophobic man who'd compromised with and survived all changes of government; despite the great personal and social cost, he was still going strong and plotting his next advance. Cho's "Land of Exile" (1981), on the other hand, was about a man whose entire life was blighted by circumstance -- the class system before the war, betrayal by a Communist soldier afterward, and poverty in the capitalist south. O's "The Bronze Mirror" (1982) showed first the individual problems of an aging husband, grief-stricken wife and nervous little girl, before bringing them all together in a beautifully described but bitter conclusion. Kim Tongni's story from the 1950s concerned a forest-dweller's revenge on bullying soldiers. Hwang Sogyong's piece from the 1970s showed the poor living like animals on wasteland that was soon to be destroyed by urban growth. Many of the other stories seemed slight in comparison -- a man returned to his struggling wife, then left -- or contained too many twists and improbabilities -- a long-lost sister and father recognized because of a mole. Or they contained characters and situations I just wasn't able to sympathize with.Other recent collections of Korean fiction include Modern Korean Fiction: An Anthology (2005), Modern Korean Literature: An Anthology (1990), A Ready-Made Life: Early Masters of Modern Korean Fiction (1998), Wayfarer: New Fiction by Korean Women (1997) and Words of Farewell: Stories by Korean Women Writers (1989). For tales from the north, there's Korean Short Stories: A Collection from North Korea (2003).

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. perspectives on Korean history By D. Kauck I like this book because of the personal perspectives it offers the reader on many aspects of Korean history and culture. All of the stories are more or less directly related to the theme of 'exile'. Many are about people who were uprooted by the war and had to leave their homes permanently. Indeed, the majority of the stories is about the legacy of the war in one way or another. Other themes in the stories include gender issues (especially 'The Last of Hanak'o), stigmatisation and discrimination faced by families of 'defectors' to North Korea ('Scarlet Fingernails') etc. Some of the newer stories are not related to the war or major historical events and are about exile in a less direct way: a mentally ill person going on a vacation to recover in 'Conviction' or the secret desire for a healthy young woman of a middle-aged man whose wife is gradually succumbing to cancer in 'From powder to powder'. I think that one of the best stories is 'Land of Exile': The protagonist is involved in very different ways in three periods of Korean history: as a common peasant in the pre-war period, a People's Committee official during the brief occupation by the Korean People's Army and later a construction worker unable to return home for fear of being punished (killed) for his involvement in purges of a local landlord family. 'Kapitan Ri' is an intriguing depiction of a typical collaborator, willing to sacrifice his compatriots and even his own children and ally himself to every external power (Japanese, Russians, Americans) for his own benefit. 'The Last of Hanak'o's story of an awkward relation between a female designer and her university friends shows persisting stereotypes of the "unobtrusive and comforting female" and violence against women. Given the general theme of 'exile', there is a relatively strong focus on dramatic events such as the war, violently suppressed student demonstrations and escape from hostile regimes. Less dramatic or more gradual, constant themes in Korea are often dealt with less explicitly, but they are there, too: poverty, urbanization ('A Dream of Good Fortune'), gender issues (see above), harsh working conditions and low wages during the economic miracle ('Land of Exile'). I found some of the stories a bit difficult to understand. But with the information provided in the introduction and at the beginning of each story I think I was able to get them. This book was very useful for me as a complement for history books and also because of its insights into Korean culture.

This rare book contains a collection of essays by the influential Russian philosopher Lev Isaakovich Shestov. One of the most delicate and individual of modern Russian critics, Shestov was a radical empiricist and proto-existentialist thinker who integrated literary theory and philosophical thought in a masterful way that inspired such minds as Camus, Dostoyevsky, Deleuze, D.H. Lawrence, and Bataille. Included in this collection are the essays: Anton Tchehov, The Gift of Prophecy, Penultimate Words, and The Theory of Knowledge. Written aphoristically, the works contained herein are interesting and insightful, and constitute a must-read for all students of philosophy unfamiliar with the fascinating ideas of Shestov. Lev Isaakovich Shestov was a Russian existentialist philosopher. This rare book was originally published in 1916 and is proudly republished here with a new introductory biography of the author.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Strange anti-rationalism By A Customer This book is the most rabid attack on rationalism that I have ever read. Shestov seems to be out to get all of the "great" philosophers, particulary Emanuel Kant. Kant put forth that all religion must be scrutinized under the microscope of rational thought. Shestov makes the point that no religion could withstand this scrutiny, and that we would then be essentially making logic the religion.Shestov's text, having been written by a Russian Jew, provides a point of view that most Americans would find extremely unfamiliar. This is not a book for the faint of heart, one must be prepared to view Western "thought worship" in a whole new light. This is a mind-expanding work. PS I have never seen a philosophy curriculum on-line or during my schooling that included this man.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Some Opinions on the Philosophy of Religion of Shestov By giovanni pang Undoubtedly, Shestov is one of the eminent Russian scholars I ever heard of in Russia. Nobody had ever dealed with issue of religion so deep. We can hardly denounce his knowledge on Greek philosophy and Jewish religion and on the history of philosophy of Christianity since St. Augustine to his era. He was genuinely a Russian philosopher at his period, and mentally a real Russian too! If he was born in Germany, his name might be mentioned with another eminent philosopher on religoin, Martin Heidegger.
