And somewhere along the line, he'd apparently learned the colors that accentuated his rich darkness--orange, white, yellows and occasionally a powder blue. He was gorgeous, there was no getting around that--the kind of gorgeous that could make a girl just the tiniest bit pissed off.

By Amazon Customer So...after reading it twice I suppose I can finally pull myself together enough to write a review.I really liked Jamal's character from Afterwards and Afterburn and I was ecstatic when I found out that he would be getting his own book.Makayla was a 'new' character, but I knew that I was going to like her just from reading the first chapter. I loved her relationship with her Nana and I especially loved her bond with Devin and how she stuck by his side from beginning to end.Jamal, Jamal, JAMAL! Whew. What can I say? As I said, I liked him in the other books, but now? I am in love with him. The man is a beast in the music industry AND the bedroom. He was funny, intelligent, and didn't 'pull any punches'! Makayla was saucy and smart enough to keep him on his toes.I loved the age difference between the two. I loved how the two of them were from the same place and although they were in difference places now, they had that connection to one another.And of course, I loved catching up with the other couples and getting more insight to Jamal's friendship with Chris. Also, a few unanswered questions from Afterburn were answered (the gender of Chris and Robyn's new baby, Chris' career plans).This book was WELL, and I do mean WELL worth the wait. I read it twice in two days. I am with another reviewer with saying that this cannot be it! No, no, no, Nia. You cannot give us a man like Jamal and the woman who snatched his player's card and just give them...one book. We want more!

Thank you Nia Forrester for adding that character detail along with the use of the term "locs" instead of the dreadful moniker. I love that Jamal likes non-traditional and appreciates beauty beyond the surface. I love Makayla's intelligence; it's so reminiscent of Riley. I also love her loyalty and commitment. I love Jamal; very reminiscent of Chris, but his own man with his own convictions. I love the slow building of romance and love that intensifies over time. I love the passion of a couple and this story met my expectations. I finished in a day because I couldn't put it down"!

Campbell So now that I've dried my eyes and reabsorbed this story a little bit, it's time to put down my thoughts. I first read The Come Up a month or so ago and then picked it up again last week to refresh my memory before writing the review. One thing led to another and before I knew it, I was deep inside the story again, which surprised me because I can't remember when was the last time I re-read a book.Anyhoo … Jamal – a man's man and a woman's dream-come-true. Although he wasn't about making a commitment and fought it somewhat, he had to be true to himself eventually. Like a man who's busy getting ahead, certain things take precedence, and making the right connections and having the perfect partner are among those.Well, Ms. Mackayla turned all of that upside down. Young, but mature in her own right, she sticks to her principles and doesn't stand for foolishness. Not many women will display the kind of loyalty and strength she does in standing by her friend, Devin, despite knowing what she stands to lose careerwise.In this novel, the writer uses 'the other woman' not in a catty role, but in a way that highlights Jamal's desirability as a partner. Plus she deftly paints a picture of the 'quiet desperation' that grips some of us when we feel we're getting to what we think is our expiration date. The author did this with style and grace, making me sympathetic although of course, I didn't want Madison mucking up the romance between Jamal and Makayla.For me, these two lead characters made the book enjoyable reading. I also like Ms. Forrester's writing style, which has a literary feel, and have no doubt I'll be backtracking to the books that came before The Come Up. If I was asked to confine my thoughts on this story to three words, I'd chose compelling, poignant, and satisfying.

My mother got the book from one of my fathers great aunts. It was published in 1923. I have yet to read the entire book after 5 years of owning it. The reason is you have to read certain passages and think of what they really meant.I actually use this book to relax, when ever times are hard, and i need a change of pace. There are writtings from every great person that wrote or spoke up untill the time Mr. Hubbard died. This is a very inspirational reading. I recommend this book to everyone.

By Anthony Scahill Forty years ago,while walking,in Chicago, I discovered that I had turned on to Hubbard street,and encountered a used book store, tended by a very strange, and extremely hostile couple,who very reluctantly, allowed me to walk out of their store, with an entire shelf of Fra Elberts books,in excellent condition.beautifully bound at his Roycrofters institute, in East Aurora; One of the books was "Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book",and it was worth far more than the price I paid for the entire lot;In fact,one item (About Chief Red Cloud) is priceless; I highly reccomend that everyone buy this book if only for that one essay,and if you can get it along with his "A Message To Garcia"by all means do so. The wisdom in those two items,is sorely needed today.

They contain the inspired and inspiring selections of Elbert, gathered during a lifetime of discriminating reading for his own use. They contain mottoes, epigrams, short essays, passages, and orphic sayings. They are coined from a life of love, laughter and work by a man who achieved greatly in literature, art, philosophy, business, and life. I highly recommend it to anyone who is fascinated with the human spirit

In the future, he would like to also try his hand at writing historical fiction, with Abraham Lincoln as the subject. Enjoyable read about life transitions and the rewards of friendship By Reviewer Dr. Beth As the title suggests, The Book Club centers around five women who are members of a reading circle. Their Book Club has been an important part of each of their lives for many years, but now, as they are in their 40s and 50s, each woman is facing a crossroads in her life. Center to the story is one of the club's founders, Eve, who, in the opening pages of the book, suddenly loses her husband and the entire life she knew. Doris, the other founding member, is the next-most featured character: a wife and mother who feels both of those titles beginning to slip away, along with her identity. Doris is also at odds with one of the newer group members, Annie, a seemingly perfect career woman who is losing control over her own life as well. Finally, Midge and Gabriella round out the circle, and although each face their own dilemmas, less time is devoted to their characters.Other reviewers have mentioned that this book is clichéd, and that's certainly true at times; there are plenty of other stories out there, both real and fiction, of women going through turning points in their lives. However, there is a universal aspect to these women's stories that creates an entertaining and engaging novel. Although I found the very end of the book to be a bit too schmaltzy for my tastes, overall, I enjoyed this read and will look for other works by this author.

FOR FANS OF PATRICIA GAFFNEY'S SAVING GRACES By Maudeen Wachsmith While five women living in the same community are bonded together by their membership in the same book discussion group, they are also divided by their different personalities and secrets they know about one another.Eve is a recent widow who, even though was having some marital difficulties, has now glorified the marriage, even putting her late husband up on a pedestal although in reality he was not as good a husband as she seems to remember. A college graduate, she has let her degree go by the wayside while has found fulfillment in her family and volunteering for literacy.Annie, a gifted lawyer, has seen it all and done it all. Rising above a difficult childhood, she has been content with her life but now her biological time clock is ticking down and she finds that she would really love to have a baby. Her husband has been wishing for this for a long time and is thrilled with her announcement.Doris has been the perfect wife and mother, neglecting herself in the process. Now her children are older and don't need her as much, she is dealing with suspicions of her husband's infidelity and of her own mortality.Midge has been alone for years. A gifted artist she's been happy with the situation -- up until now. When her vibrant mother moves in for an extended visit, Midge resents the intrusion.Gabriella and her family are happy but when her husband is laid off work, they struggle with even everyday existence.References to books the group has chosen to read adds to the appeal of this story as each woman grows to realize what is really important in her life.Mary Alice Monroe has written a beautiful story of friendship. Readers get to know some of the book group members more than others (Annie and Eve are best known and to a lesser degree Doris, while Gabriella and Midge are really merely secondary characters). Many readers will be able to identify one or another of these women as they struggle with life-changing events in their lives. While the ending seems a bit rushed, the overall story is very satisfying and is likely to keep readers up late at night finishing as it did this reviewer. Readers will look forward to more novels from this talented writer.

These ladies in the Book Club all share different stories.Eve, the main character in this story loses her husband Tom tragically in the first of the book. There were many unsettled issues between them upon his death, and Eve will uncover a terrible betrayal as the book moves on. In the meantime, she had to sell their beautiful home and move in to a condo with her two children who are very unaccepting.Midge, a single artist in the story, is dealing with her own set of problems, especially when her mother plans to come there to Chicago from Florida, and plans to move in. Mother and daughter have many many issues between them and never could get along.Annie, who is a lawyer, wants nothing more than to conceive a child. Her biological clock is ticking away,but she can't seem to get pregnant no matter what. It is later in the story that she finds out the real reason for not conceiving, and it is a shocker. It takes a long time for acceptance here, and may mean a life altering decision.Gabriella, a wife and mother, has a husband who has lost his job and is struggling to make ends meet. In fact, there may come a time when they lose their home.The book was great all the way through, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. It really is true to life as it is today.

Not only has Emily been dumped by her boyfriend, but she's also unhappy in her job. Feeling in a bit of a slump her best friend, Will comes to her rescue. Will suggests that she come and work with him at Barnes Inc in Queensland. The idea of working in Queensland sounds very appealing to Emily and thinks putting space between her and Trent might be ideal.Mark Crawford is a hard boss and not the easiest of men to approach so Will knows it's going to be a hard task putting Emily's name forward for the job vacancy. He also knows that working in a mostly male environment could be difficult on Emily and hopes she'll be able to cope.Charlotte Templeton is the manager of Silver Silver Sea Resort. This is the resort where the workers from Barnes Inc live. The workers are are not tidy and most nights they end up drunk and Charlotte is fed with them, but will talking to Mark about the issues she has with his workers make any difference?As well as trying to run the resort Charlotte also cares for her sixty year old mother who is suffering Alzheimer's disease. And she also looks after her fifteen year old sister who can be quite a hand full at times.Seeing one day that Emily is being given a bit of a hard time from the other workers, Charlotte intervenes and from that day on they become friends. Having someone to share her problems with makes the world of difference to Charlotte. She not only has to deal with everyday things, but she also carries around a deep secret. But one day that secret will come out and the lives of her loved one will change forever unless she can put a stop to it.I absolutely LOVED this book. This is the first book I've read by Aussie author Loretta Hill and it certainly won't be my last. I enjoyed all the characters especially Charlotte's mother as she had me laughing out loud. A fantastic read which I HIGHLY recommend. If you like a bit of humour, romance, and drama then make sure you read this fabulous book I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Wonderful Aussie romance By Shelleyrae The third book in a loosely linked series, The Girl in the Yellow Vest is another engaging Australian contemporary romance by talented Aussie author, Loretta Hill.Emily Woods was expecting her boyfriend of five years to propose, instead he asked her to move out and with her engineering career, stalled, she is in desperate need of a fresh start so when her best friend, Will, offers to find her work at his current project on Queensland's coast, Emily jumps at the chance. Will is excited at the prospect of Emily joining him in Mackay, for five long years he has been careful to never betray his attraction to her, but now that she is single, perhaps he will find an opportunity to tell her how he feels.I enjoyed the change of scenery Hill provides in The Girl in the Yellow Vest. Previous books, The Girl in Steel-Capped Boots and The Girl in the Hard Hat, featured Western Australia's Pilbara region while here, Hill sets the book in Northern Queensland, based on a project she once worked at the Hay Point Wharf.Emily and Will's transition from friends to lovers is slow but lovely, both are afraid of damaging their close friendship and admitting their mutual attraction. Will is especially wary given his long standing friendship with Emily's ex and the possibility they might make up. It takes a good while for Emily to realise that her feelings for Will have changed and their attempts to connect are plagued by miscommunication, poor timing and outside interference.The subplot involving Barnes Inc boss, Mark Crawford and hotel owner Charlotte Templeton tends to steal the limelight from Emily and Will though. Charlotte, struggling with a failing business, a rebellious teenage sister and ill mother, and Mark, still mired in grief after the death of his wife two years previously, barely tolerate each other to begin with and the complications of their lives affects the way in which their relationship develops.Really my only complaint about the novel is in regards to Mark, who, apart from being very similar to Dan 'Bulldog' in The Girl in the Steel Capped Boots, his speech in particular is too formal and often didn't sound 'true'.I did really enjoy The Girl in the Yellow Vest, I love the way the author combines humour, romance and drama in an unique Australian setting. It was also lovely to be briefly reunited with previous characters (the book opens at Dan and Lena's wedding) and I look forward to catching up with these characters again in Hill's next book.

THE GIRL IN THE YELLOW VEST By Rad-Reader This book so far at the beginning is an interesting mix of four people’s lives and how they connect to one another. First you have the two best friends and engineer’s Emily Woods and Will Steward. They went to the University together with four of their other friends. Yet, Emily and Will had a special bond, never dated just friends. Will in fact was dating Sasha when they met and since they were having problems thought about dropping her for Emily but never did. His loss because he took Em to a party and Will’s best friend since grade school, Trent asked her out. It was first love for the both of them. A dagger to Will’s heart but he had waited too long to make a move. Will loved Em enough to continue to be her BFF to the point where she thought that anytime now she thought that Trent would be popping the question. So was teasing Will about being his maid of honor. Then at Lena and Dan’s wedding when all the Uni friends were together he could tell something was bothering her. Trent wasn’t there yet that wasn’t unusual since he was a lawyer and he missed a lot of events. Emily was slowly getting hammered with hardly touching her meal. Will sees her go out by the pond and he follows. When he asks what’s wrong and she says nothing he then ask if she is ready for dessert she says no then he knows something is wrong. And asks again… Finally she tells him about how Trent took her to dinner two weeks ago not to pop “The Question” but to break up with her. Saying it’s not her it’s him. More freedom to date, so now she is single again after five years. Not to mention that he asked her to move out so now she is living with her parents, she is slightly overweight and she hates her job.Will throws her a bone and says he will try and give her an in for an engineer position that they have at his job site but he couldn’t promise anything. That just made her day. Not to mention he gave her what for because she was calling herself overweight. He thought she looked wonderful and told her so. Now the other two the story revolves around is Charlotte Templeton and Mark Crawford. Charlotte went to Uni and became a psychologist. Giving her the ability to read the signs of why Mark had his aggressive behavior. It was always triggered by something: abuse as a child, trauma in adulthood, loss, guilt, suffering so the tightness of his responses belied those truths. Therefore, she was not fearful of Mark like everyone else. Aggravated sometimes sad for but not mad. She did however find him sexy but with her family’s business just barely making it, raising her 15 yr. old sister and caring for her mother with Alzheimer’s who has time for dating. As for Mark, everyone on the job site behind his back called him Caesar. He is more of a ruler than a boss. He is a cold blooded bastard to everyone. You either feared him or hated him no in between. No one knows since he still wears his wedding ring that his wife passed away 2 years ago from breast cancer and that’s where most of his anger comes from. But like reaching out from the grave Kathryn had her lawyer send him a package 2 years after her death. There was a DVD from him to watch and a list to follow exactly of things to do. She knows he is grieving and it’s time to move on and she had wanted to make sure he did. This is where each of their journeys begins but definitely not the end. This story is stacked with so much going on behind each sub story you get totally engulfed in the complicated lives of these four that you don’t realize you are totally invested. The characters are multilayered in who they are and what they are about. Will, is so simple that Emily misses all the signs of what is going on. Then there is Mark, he is so extremely complicated that Charlotte with her PHD can’t help but dig into his mind and heart. Even if it hurts them both. Then add all the other characters and WOW! About the Author Donna Walker-Nixon, a recipient of the Minnie Stevens Piper Award, is the founding editor of Windhover: A Journal of Christian Literature and the cofounding editor of Langdon Review of the Arts in Texas. She is the author of the novel Canaan’s Oothoon. Her short story “Tented Amusements” was published in the Journal of Texas Women Writers, and her fiction has appeared in Descant, Echoes, and Concho River Review, Red Boots and Attitude, Texas Short Stories, and Writing on the Wind. She lives in Temple, Texas. Cassy Burleson is a professor of English at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Rachel Crawford has worked as a high school English teacher, a university English professor, an editor, and a writer. Her poetry has appeared in various journals, and she is a recipient of the Beall Poetry Festival’s Poetry in the Arts Award. They both live in Lorena, Texas. Ashley Palmer teaches sociology, sociology of religion, and gender studies courses at Baylor University, where she is a former assistant director of the Academy for Teaching and Learning. The women writers collected in this extensive and inclusive anthology are among them. I explored the state as I explored the book. Suddenly as I read Sherry Craven’s “Coleman, Texas and Us,” I’m a kid in the hot back seat of the family Chevy, windows down to catch the cedar-scented dust-ladened wind, craning to catch sight of the farm house on the hill and know that Grandmother, cold buttermilk, and love are waiting not that many miles from Coleman. Later, I found myself playing in the Gulf, sniffing rich magnolias, and listening to Bob Willis and the Texas Playboys. From the early days of novelist Mary Holley, Stephen F.’s cousin, through this week, women have shared their views and emotions about their state. Growing up in Amarillo, I relished every word of my down-the-street neighbor Loula Grace Erdman who made the drab lives of homesteaders and school teachers shine. Do a computer search on Texas women writers and Erdman will pop right up, still fresh like her novels. That search most likely will reveal another Lou—Lou Rodenberger whose anthologies of Texas women writers inspired this volume. An essay by Rodenberger appears as the second prose offering in the book—the first is a tribute to this strong, prolific woman. Read her essay first. Read it often. This book, and I trust it will be followed by additional collections—so many writers, so few pages—will serve as a reference and a resource, but it is more. For me it will not be a straight-through read, but rather a dipping volume for when I am in need of a vicarious trip across time and Texas.The more than fifty Texas women writers and photographers do this in myriad ways using stories, poems, songs, memoir, essays and photography. It’s a great trip.

Parsons Cowboys, cactus, cattle drives...those were my associations with "Texas" before making it my home more than 20 years ago. I know now that Texas is so much more than that - and "Her Texas" does an amazing job giving voice to the great diversity of the State. Women from all walks of life, spanning photography and visual art, poetry, songs, prose, short stories - it is going to take a long time to really digest all this anthology has to offer! Great read!

I enjoyed reading the pieces about places I've known all my life, and I like that different Texas cultures and geographies are included.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well written, satisfying story By Kenn Two guys are to be working together in the engine of the Orient Express train. They basically fall in love with each other the moment they meet. They are likeable guys, and the story is well told. Given that they are snowbound for a few days, some inventive storytelling keeps it from getting boring or repetitive. It's hinted that this is the same train trip taken by the people in the Agatha Christie book, Murder on the Orient Express. The story is told back and forth by the two characters. The only problem with this book is that the two characters didn't have their own voice. Most of the time you wouldn't remember which character was talking unless he mentions the other main character by name. They also use many of the same sayings and word patterns, so, unless you are paying unusually close attention to which character you are told is talking, you wouldn't know. Also, there is a totally unnecessary twist near the end. It doesn't hurt the story, just totally uncalled for. Recommended

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Great Adventure and Love Story By Scooter This story kept me intrigued the entire read. The two main characters Nedium and Braslav are believable in their struggle to keep their relationship alive. It is also an adventure that tells of the survival of the two men and the occupants of a train crash during winter on the Orient Express. This event is depicted with such clarity that I felt as if I were there with Nedium and Braslav. The story spans several decades and ends in Paris. What a better place to end a story than in the city of lights.
