Each tale is a secular pilgrimage to fascinating times and places that forge strong connections and increased awareness for the characters. In each, the consequence of choice is examined with subtle insight and promising resolution. The author provides a look at the cocoons we choose, and the choices we must make to successfully emerge.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it By Orcas Penny Once Upon the Possible brings together the past and the present for three women in transition. Each story stands alone yet each also resonates as Kay, Ellie and Jessica move to new discoveries and perspectives at a turning point in their life's journey. These gems sparkle with new insights and information for them and for us, too. Who knew the Irish connection to the Titanic? Who knew there were dark secrets in Victoria BC? I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Ebook PDF Online Mishmash: Stories, Essays, Ridiculous Ramblings And/or Astute Observations, by Larry Gross

Author Larry Gross is offering up a “word stew” of sorts—in his words, a mishmash of stories. Some of the stories are fiction, some are real life and some are a mixture of both. The subject matter varies and covers a wide variety of topics—all the way to a troubled neighbor cutting herself to Gross actually getting stuck inside an elevator. It covers silly visits to Walgreens and stray cats in the neighborhood where he lives. One story talks about an alcoholic father trying to come to terms with his life. Another story covers the issues of a homeless man trying to get back on his feet and yet another piece talks about a bug hanging out in an apartment. The variation of these stories is why Gross has found a dedicated following for nearly 20 years. A reader seldom, if ever, knows what to expect from him. “Mishmash” is his fifth book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What I like about them and him is the ability to get in and out quickly. By Tom Clark I think this is Larry's third book of stories and "stories" is what I'm going to call them. What I like about them and him is the ability to get in and out fairly quickly. He doesn't linger too long and there isn't a lot of fat on the bone here. Some of these stories I've read in City Beat but a lot of them are new to me. With 60 all together and a fairly low book price, it was very much worth it to get the book. I really enjoyed it.

Colonel Henry Steel Olcott [1832-1907] was the first western Buddhist convert, probably since antiquity. He co-founded the Theosophical Society and was its first president. The only contributor to the 19th century southern Buddhist revival who was born a Protestant, Olcott was able to promote Eastern ideas to western society.

The Buddhist Catechism was Olcott’s attempt to elucidate the basic doctrines of Buddhism in an ecumenical way. This book is still in use today in Sri Lanka. Olcott is fondly remembered in Sri Lanka and by Theosophists world-wide.

By John Drake This is the definitive watershed work that brought Buddhism to the West and explains it in a manner that's very easy for Westerners to understand. It is a wonderful book that uses a question and answer structure like the Catholic Catechism to enlighten the reader on the Buddhist faith. It covers every aspect of Buddhism and there's much to learn from it whether you are a beginner or a master or from the East or the West. I strongly recommend this book. I got so much out of it. This book answers a lot of very important questions, including ones that I have had for some time. It's been a real blessing to me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A real good collection here. By Wag The Fox Spring sprang and with it came a dozen or so new releases from the upstart imprint of Broken River Books, King Shot Press. After receiving review copies of a couple of the titles, I decided to try out the short story collection of Eric Nelson called Leverage to get an idea of what KSP was offering. Turns out they're selling some raw-boned talent.Where Broken River seems to go for the kind of subversive side of pulp fiction, King Shot appears to take a literary bent. The stories range in setting and time-frame, but there's a grit to them, like if a Rockwell painting had a drinking problem. That said, its strongest story happens to be its first.I can't say if "Gulf Coast Deep Game" is enough to warrant buying the whole collection, but it is a damned good portrait of a family, specifically the patriarch. I thought Nelson did a pitch perfect job with this one,"The Walt Whitman House" takes us out of the gulf and into Jersey territory with a couple of young men looking to strike out on their own on the streets when things with the brother of one of them doesn't go so smoothly. Not quite The Wire, but very engrossing little story ... especially when they find the dynamite. One of the stories that had a bit of a Hitchcock vibe with me, even if just a little bit, was "He's a Nice Old Man." This one had a young man staying in the apartment of his brother and wife while his brother's away, and having to contend with an increasingly unsettling landlord. It may have been one of the more predictable stories in this collection, but also one of the more fun for its execution. If there's a story that captures any and all of this book's dark humor, it has to be "A Drink Among Friends." A couple of not too close acquaintances in a small town bar meet up over beers, where one comes clean about a rather startling piece of his history that really causes his friend to look at him in a whole new light. It could be considered a rather grim tale, until you get to the very last line and then that darkly tinged sense of humor kicks in.And that's the thing about Leverage, it pulls you one way through each of the stories, but each one winds up pushing you in a completely different direction before all is said and done. Nelson has a nice handle of choosing just the right line, as well as just carving out some engaging stories. Whatever else he has in store for readers down the road, it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for him. He's real good here, and wouldn't surprise me to see him get even better.

(another King Shot book) by Cody Goodfellow is the best short story collection I have read this year By david Bridges I never heard of Nelson but I wanted to check out this book on the strength of King Shot's affiliation with Broken River Books and the fact Strategies Against Nature (another King Shot book) by Cody Goodfellow is the best short story collection I have read this year.I enjoyed Leverage. It's curt and straight to the point. The stories feel very realistic like you are either with the people in the stories or you definitely know someone like them. That familiarity was my favorite part of the book. The Walt Whitman House and A Drink Among Friends were are my two favorite stories. I only gave it a 4 because when it was all done I did want a little more of something that I can't really put my finger on. Maybe that doesn't sound right but whatever, it's a really good book. I look forward to reading more Nelson and King Shot Press.
