The first book is back -- CELEBRATE By TammyJo Eckhart (...)The Marketplace series by Laura Antoniou is erotic literature of the highest quality and it will encapture your mind and heart as well as turn you on. This reissue is very welcomed and the new short story at the end covers a gap between this and the second book of the series, "The Slave" very well -- this short story alone is worth the cost of the book for any Marketplace fan. You'll meet all the important and reoccuring characters from Antoniou's series; you'll develop strong opinions about each too that may surprise some of you. This isn't soft and romantic BDSM though so if you can't handle DS without limits, serious punishment, and even sexual use to the extreme, you'll want to skip this series. It appeals across the board to all seuxal orientaions within the BDSM category -- in fact it plays around with the orientations in wonderfully engaging ways. I highly recommend this book.

To the experienced BDSMer many of the characters will seem familiar, even if you have never read it book before. The Do-Me-Queen Princess, The awkward Sissy maid, The delicate yet 'always proper' servant girl, The leather boy looking for something "more"... here is the Marketplaces newest arrivals. Maybe you've seen them in the clubs or even online? Ever wonder what would happen to such a person if they got what they say they want? Ever wonder what "REAL D/s" is? Ask yourself - do I have what it takes to train a slave? Read this and ask yourself again. This book (heck this entire series) is what I go for whenever I hit a rut in my scene life. I've often referred to it as "the most realistic fiction" in BDSM literature. And I recommend it to EVERYONE in the scene.

Not quite my view of BDSM By eeepy This is the story of four slaves - Brian, Claudia, Sharon and Robert - who all have an inherent need to be "owned" in the fullest sense of the word. We follow their journey as they are trained in a crash course by Alex, Grendel and Chris.Basically, The Marketplace is a secret society catering to those who wish to own well-trained slaves and those who wish to be sold as slaves. When we're talking about a slave in this context, we're talking about one with no limits.I'm ambivalent about this book for a number of reasons. Firstly, if this was reality, the training provided in this book would be utilised by owners who can't be bothered training their own slaves and who want to buy one off the shelf. To me, that takes the dominant's authority away from them - isn't half the pleasure of owning a slave knowing that you've trained them yourself?Secondly, there is a huge amount of sex in this book. I'm no prude and I don't have a problem with sex, but BDSM is not all about sex. If you want a lot of sex scenes mixed in with punishment, then you'll love this. But to me, it misrepresents what real-life BDSM is about and enforces the "kinky sex" stereotype that a lot of people seem to have about BDSM.Thirdly, the grammatical and typographical errors throughout are horrendous. I don't know what device was used to type The Marketplace, but repeatedly mis-spelling "circumstance" as "circomestance" could easily have been corrected in most modern word processors. There are other oft-repeated and very annoying grammatical errors, which drove me to distraction. I admit that I'm fairly picky about things like this and I can live with a few errors, but this book is riddled with them. However, I found this an interesting read overall. It is more than just a bunch of sex and BDSM scenes and it has a storyline.

In one of the finest houses of the rue Neuve-des-Mathurins, at half-past eleven at night, two young women were sitting before the fireplace of a boudoir hung with blue velvet of that tender shade, with shimmering reflections, which French industry has lately learned to fabricate. Over the doors and windows were draped soft folds of blue cashmere, the tint of the hangings, the work of one of those upholsterers who have just missed being artists. A silver lamp studded with turquoise, and suspended by chains of beautiful workmanship, hung from the centre of the ceiling.

Eyes of innocents are opened to a world they never suspected By Leapin' Literary Lurkers I continue to be enchanted by Balzac's observation of life and his fantastically detailed scene-setting. This book is part of his masterful La Comedie Humaine and destined to be one of my favorites.Starting with the rigid, religious upbringing of two sisters whose every youthful inclination is damped down by an odious mother, the reader follows these innocents as they marry and are exposed to a social milieu of which they never dreamed, much less encountered.Portraits of conniving women, duplicitous men and general all-round scheming are part of the plot; we watch as one sister embarks on a self-destructive flirtation with a somewhat pretentious "bad-boy" character. People's feelings, motivations and feelings are examined under a microscope and presented for the reader's edification. We witness women's manipulations, subterfuge, revenge, shallow relationships and coquetry. We see characters being set up for a fall as they get drawn farther into the web of play-acting and deceit. The characters are described with remarkable insight. One of my favorite quotes seemed to sum up the story's intent: "A violent and successful passion takes a great deal of space in an ordinary life."

Perhaps a little heavy handed on the moralizing, which however was part of books that sold well in that era. Worth reading for the working out of the downfalls of ordinary weak persons.

You’ll get through this.

It won’t be painless.

It won’t be quick.

But God will use this mess for good.

Don’t be foolish or naïve.

But don’t despair either.

With God’s help, you’ll get through this.

You fear you won't make it through. We all do. We fear that the depression will never lift, the yelling will never stop, the pain will never leave. In the pits, surrounded by steep walls and aching reminders, we wonder: Will this gray sky ever brighten? This load ever lighten?

In You'll Get Through This, pastor and New York Times best-selling author, Max Lucado offers sweet assurance. "Deliverance is to the Bible what jazz music is to Mardi Gras: bold, brassy, and everywhere." Max reminds readers God doesn't promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless. It wasn't for Joseph--tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed--but his Old Testament story is in the Bible for this reason: to teach us to trust God to trump evil.

With the compassion of a pastor, the heart of a storyteller, and the joy of one who has seen what God can do, Max explores the story of Joseph and the truth of Genesis 50:20. What Satan intends for evil, God redeems for good.

You'll Get Through This: Hope and Help for Your Turbulent Times, by Max Lucado

From Booklist New York Times best-selling author Lucado uses the Old Testament’s Joseph to illustrate that, no matter what happens, we fare better facing challenges with God’s help. Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery, but he made the best of his circumstances by looking out for others, avoiding seduction, remaining honest, and staying true to his heart and intuition. After two decades, he progressed from prisoner to prince of Egypt. For those facing difficult times—job loss, illness, loss of a loved one, accident, divorce—maintaining integrity may seem out of reach, but Lucado offers countless examples of those who have done just that and reaped untold rewards. He insists that what kept these individuals rock solid was the understanding that God was with them. Lucado also touches upon several universals: understanding your specific calling and destiny, absorbing God’s grace, doing what’s morally right, the benefits of gratitude, the power of forgiveness, and the importance of making a life plan. With this book, and maybe the intercession of the divine, those facing tough times can make it through. --Susan DeGrane

You'll Get Through This By Michael Taylor "You'll Get Through This" by Max Lucado is a great read for anyone needing encouragement to persevere through the challenges they are currently experiencing. Using the Old Testament story of Joseph as a biblical basis, Lucado shares many important points, some of which are:1. Be careful of short-term thinking - your struggles will not last forever, but you will. You still have your destiny.2. You will never go where God is not and He is near whether you are happy or not.3. God uses everything for His glory and our ultimate approval.4. Don't make matters worse by doing something you'll later regret.5. Instead of trying to please others, focus on doing what pleases God (I say "Amen" to that!).6. See your troubles as something God uses to develop our character and maturity for His glory.7. While you wait, God works on your behalf. Waiting is sustained effort focused on God through prayer and belief (Being in-between regular full-time jobs, I can especially relate to this as I work part-time and continue to look for a regular full-time job).8. We can either choose to trust God or turn away from Him.9. While proud people are seldom grateful, grateful people people see every day as a gift from God.10. Trust God to take of you.As with other Lucado titles, you will be encouraged and challenged to focus on God instead of yourself and your problems. At the risk of sounding trite or uncaring, our problems really do pale in comparison to our destiny with Jesus Christ in eternity (for those who know Him as Savior and Lord).Highly recommended.

Youll get Through This by Max Lucado By mary This book is a perfect example of why i love to read Lucado. he is without exception by favorite modern author. What do we do when something awful happens to us? We think we will never recover. I know I do. We focus on why good people do bad things. We focus on pain. Well, in this the best of all his books so far, Lucado uses the story from the Old Testament about Joseph to remind us that God will use what the devil tryies to destroy to make something wonderful and powerful and fantastic - all we have to do is hold on and wait for God to do His miracle in our lives!!What a powerful message of hope!Joseph was betrayed by his brothers because his father loved him most. But Joseph was gifted by God to have an understanding that was unparralled and he was gifted by interpretations: God had Joseph a better man.Dniel, has the same story. Daniel was taken from Judah to Babylon as a castle slave, but God gave Daniel an understanding; and Daniel was excelled above all others to third in power over all of babylon. There is no limit to what God can do and if you dont get anything else from this book get this:THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HOPELESS SITUATION IF WE TRUST IN GOD.

We are like Joseph By Mark Manis Max Lucado takes the reader through the story of Joseph and how throughout his struggles of being abandoned and sold as a slave, God had a plan for him. Max writes how God is working in our lives, although we may not see it. I recommend this book for those who have went through or going through struggles in their lives.

After twenty years in the ad game, two marriages and two divorces, and his kids grown up now, Jack can at last resume his Whitman-Thoreau-Kerouac dream of seeking self-knowledge in the Great American Mythscape. At last he can return to the wildflowers in a mayonnaise jar lifestyle he still cherishes from his youth in the ’60s. And then he meets Céline: thirtyish, girl-friend beautiful, PhD educated, and a divorced mother of two small children with whom Jack instantly bonds. Midlife crisis never met a more tantalizing tender trap—but Jack hangs tough. He explains to the woman he loves that his journey into rural solitude for a life of simplicity and contemplation is something he absolutely must do—until his daughter calls. Jessie phones Friday evening to tell him she’s leaving LA and her boyfriend and is coming back home to Miami—Monday morning. Oh, and she’s pregnant. Céline graciously opens her home to Jack and his daughter; in spite of his anguish at missing the opportunity of his “journey into the meaning of life,” Jack and his daughter move in Monday morning. The two-family shuffle begins (actually four-family, including Céline’s former, Jack’s two, and the nascent fourth), and everybody is dealt a new definition of “home.” It’s not easy, particularly with Jessie around. Preternaturally smart, funny, quick of lip, she and her father still have “issues” that go ’way back. Eminently likable and well meaning, Jessie can also be quite self-absorbed and thoughtless, as Céline and her two kids soon find out. At the same time that he wonders why he is starting his third family, Jack further slips into parental mode with a young copywriter he mentors at the ad agency; Jeremy is the boss’s problematic nephew, fresh out of college and a royal pain in the ads. And then there’s office politics and the Machiavellian vice president who’s trying to include Jack in a scheme to steal the agency’s top client to anchor a new, competitive agency. We learn all of this and more in flashbacks from a meditation retreat center on a snowbound mountain in Vermont. We learn about the disaster that finally drove Jack to break with Céline and family and career (and sunny Miami) to become caretaker and solitary winter resident of Sky Meadow—solitary except for two mongrel dogs with whom he shares cozy accommodations in an ancient railroad passenger car, the “Continental Drift Express.” There are also flashbacks to Jack’s two failed marriages, to the ’60s in the Haight-Ashbury, a hippie commune in the Pacific Northwest, and a night of slapstick and real pain at the red-neckest bar in the Florida Everglades. The Continental Drift Express may be going nowhere on its cement-block foundation, but Jack’s inner journey goes from decades-old flashbacks to millennial flash-forwards. There are spiritual episodes as well as philosophical-psychological aha’s, all leading to intriguing new visions of both grinning and the dark.

They are well coordinated so that folks have some reading and pondering to do during the week and then get together for discussion on Sunday study times. Everybody is enjoying this study and getting a lot out of it.

The use of personal stories, scripture, and application is encouraging and challenging. I recommend the students guide. The guide helps bring out the main points and has some great small group questions as well as more in depth scripture studies.

Four years after she set sail from England, leaving everything she most loved behind, Maisie Dobbs at last returns, only to find herself in a dangerous place . . .

In Jacqueline Winspear‘s  powerful story of political intrigue and personal tragedy, a brutal murder in the British garrison town of Gibraltar leads Maisie into a web of lies, deceit, and peril.

Spring 1937. In the four years since she left England, Maisie Dobbs has experienced love, contentment, stability—and the deepest tragedy a woman can endure. Now, all she wants is the peace she believes she might find by returning to India. But her sojourn in the hills of Darjeeling is cut short when her stepmother summons her home to England; her aging father Frankie Dobbs is not getting any younger.

But on a ship bound for England, Maisie realizes she isn’t ready to return. Against the wishes of the captain who warns her, “You will be alone in a most dangerous place,” she disembarks in Gibraltar. Though she is on her own, Maisie is far from alone: the British garrison town is teeming with refugees fleeing a brutal civil war across the border in Spain.

Yet the danger is very real. Days after Maisie’s arrival, a photographer and member of Gibraltar’s Sephardic Jewish community, Sebastian Babayoff, is murdered, and Maisie becomes entangled in the case, drawing the attention of the British Secret Service. Under the suspicious eye of a British agent, Maisie is pulled deeper into political intrigue on “the Rock”—arguably Britain’s most important strategic territory—and renews an uneasy acquaintance in the process. At a crossroads between her past and her future, Maisie must choose a direction, knowing that England is, for her, an equally dangerous place, but in quite a different way.

A Dangerous Place LP: A Maisie Dobbs Novel, by Jacqueline Winspear

Review “With clarity and economy, Winspear lays the historical groundwork….The setting matters, but what may matter more is the lovely, sometimes poetic way Winspear pushes her heroine forward….May she shine on the literary scene for many books to come.” (USA Today, 3.5 out of 4 stars)“A gripping and moving story, filled with fully realized characters and spare but stylish prose….As always, Maisie—one of the most complex and admirable characters in contemporary fiction—fulfills expectations. And Winspear continues to dazzle as she once again excels in and transcends the genre.” (Richmond Times-Dispatch)“This eleventh entry in the Maisie Dobbs series, with enough backstory to stand alone, shows the same meticulous research that grounds these books so firmly in their time and place, along with moving life changes that further humanize the intrepid protagonist. Another winner from Winspear.” (Booklist, starred review)“The latest installment of Jacqueline Winspear’s consistently interesting series….[Maisie’s] drawn into a climate of political intrigue that repels her-but keeps the rest of us avidly reading.” (Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review)“Maisie would be interesting enough as a combination psychologist, empath and detective, but Winspear endows her with a rich backstory….With the clouds of war gathering, we can only expect that the British government will have uses for such a clever and effective woman....Interesting times ahead.” (Bobbi Dumas, NPR Books)“A welcome addition to the series….It’s an understatement to note that Ms. Winspear, as usual, has made excellent use of her background research.” (Nora Levine, HeadButler.com)“Winspear elegantly weaves historical events with Maisie’s own suffering—the bombing of Guernica is particularly well-done—all while constructing an engaging whodunit. Fans of this long-running series will welcome Maisie’s return in this 11th installment while feeling the pain of her losses as deeply as if they were their own.” (Kirkus)

As concerns this series, I am, too. Longtime fans will probably be as stunned as I over the first few pages of A Dangerous Place. In a series of letters, Winspear deals with four momentous years in Maisie's life with what can only be described as brisk efficiency. I can understand her desire not to bog down the narrative, but since Maisie is already constantly harking back to time spent with her mentor or her service in World War I or her college days or what her best friend would say to her, what's a little more time spent on telling readers about those four years?Winspear does her usual marvelous job in giving readers a real feel for the setting. With the Spanish Civil War raging just over the border, with the build-up to World War II, Gibraltar's strategic position makes it extremely valuable to many countries, and it seems that they all have representatives in place, lurking around the corners of buildings and following Maisie wherever she goes. The author has also created a strong secondary cast-- Salazar the café owner, Mrs. Bishop the owner of the guesthouse, and the dead man's sister among them. The more the story unfolds, the more it seems that no one is whom they first appear to be, and with the number of people spying on others it's a miracle they don't start tripping over each other. This is a presentiment of another problem I'm beginning to have with a series I've loved since its inception. The closer to World War II the series becomes, the more the storylines are delving into the shadowy world of spies and double-dealing. I've never cared for spy novels, so I'm definitely not enjoying this foray into that world. But as a character told Maisie in a previous book, once those spy organizations get their hooks into you, they don't let you go. I really don't want to see Maisie go down that road.Although the mystery is rather slow to unfold, it does pick up speed and becomes quite intriguing. I enjoyed watching Maisie solve a complex case, just as I enjoyed the author's depiction of Gibraltar at this very tumultuous time. I'm deeply invested in Winspear's character. Maisie's story has grown from being a rags-to-riches tale to something deeper and much more meaningful. But for the past few books, Maisie has seemed to take two steps back to every three steps forward. Her experiences during World War I have left an indelible mark upon her of which she seems unwilling or unable to let go. With her constant musing on the past, I just can't quite see her as a successful spy in the next calamitous war to come. I am at a crossroads, and I am actually wondering if I'll be continuing with this series-- something that would have been completely unthinkable in the past.

It was an immediate publishing hit and was followed by seven or eight other novels featuring detective/psychologist, Maisie Dobbs. The first few novels in the series were extremely well written, with Jacqueline Winspear carefully detailing the back-story of Maisie's life and her studies at Cambridge and nursing work in France in the Great War. She created the character of Dr Maurice Blanche, who was Maisie's mentor and teacher as Maisie opened up her detective agency in London after the war. We read the cases that Maisie took on in those first few books and we see her private life as the doctor she had loved during the war is taken from her by a lingering death. Maisie Dobbs and the secondary characters were brilliant creations in Jacqueline Winspear's talented hands. And then, something happened to the books. Did Winspear lose interest in her characters? Was she bored with writing about 1920's London? Who really knows, but somehow the series lost its "oomph" and the last five or so novels were, I guess, "ordinary". They were good, not great, reads. In 2014 Winspear left her Maisie Dobbs character and wrote a stand-alone novel, also set in the Great War. This year, 2015, Winspear has returned to the series with an excellent novel, "A Dangerous Place". She's not back to her original mo-jo but this novel is certainly closer to the older novels than the more recent ones. This series began in the post-war years in London as Maisie established her unique detective agency. She solved crimes by intuition and psychological insight as much as by physical evidence. As the years passed, and the 1920's turned into the Depression years of the 1930's, Maisie evolved into a rather ordinary character with wealthy patrons and clients and a "don't ask me to commit" relationship with the rather dishy James Compton. "Will she" or "won't she" give up her independence to marry James and become "Lady Compton". Her cases also become less interesting. Finally, she closed her agency and went off to consider her life and her future. This book, "A Dangerous Place", tells of the years in the late 1930's and what Maisie's life has become.By 1937, Maisie's life has changed completely and she is at sixes-and-sevens as she searches for both emotional peace and her place in the rapidly changing world. She spends time in India - searching - and on the return trip to England, she impulsively gets off the boat in Gibraltar. She's not ready to face her English ghosts. She immediately gets involved in a murder mystery in the colony and begins a personal investigation that echoes the methods she used during her detective agency days in London. This is what is a throw-back to the earlier novels. Winspear invokes Maurice Blanche and his teachings far more in this book than in any recent book. "Our" Maisie is back to her long-time readers.Winspear also brings in the Spanish Civil War, raging over the border from Gibraltar. Part of the novel is set in war-torn Madrid and in the outlying battle areas. At the book's end, Maisie is still searching, but her path has become a lot clearer. "A Dangerous Place" is a great read.

She is learning to live her life again after what would easily be considered the most difficult of circumstances and blows that life can deal to a woman. In a sense, she is on the run from herself and that equals being on the run from her prior life. The personal struggle described in this book seems very real and will certainly stay with me long after having finished reading the story. As she tries to find the strength to find her way home to England, Maisie stops off in Gibraltar to work up her courage to make the final leg of the voyage home. Instead, she literally stumbles across the body of a man who has been murdered. She buries herself in the task of trying to figure out who killed the man and why others are trying to hide this information. The backdrop of the book is the Spanish Civil War. We are only taken to the actual war for a short period of the book but the main thrust of the information is about how and by whom this war was being fought. It is sometimes referred to as a practice war for World War II. While the players are moved about by the author as if they were pieces on a chess board, the war was essentially fascism versus socialism. It is in this environment that Maisie finds herself seeking simple truths and finding instead political intrigue and lies. The process of working through this morass is how Maisie starts to find the light at the end of her own dark tunnel.I have read a few of the Maisie Dobbs books and find this one quite different. It seems as if Maisie is at a turning point in her life and isn't quite sure which way she will go in the end. It is interesting to see this and to think that perhaps the character is showing us some indecision that the author is having. Whatever the case, I enjoyed reading the book and look forward to the next in the series - wherever Ms. Winspear decides to take Miss Dobbs.

Sammy and Mouse were once best friends with an up and coming career as the rap duo Vixen Chaos. When both of them got pregnant by the same man, however, things fell apart. Now Rico, their babies' father, is in jail, and both women are new mothers with great responsibilities and plenty of problems. After she is kicked out of a family shelter for fighting, Mouse has no choice but to prostitute herself to survive. When she meets Tango, a hardcore thug with a soft spot for Mouse, she hopes that this is her way out of the mess she's in.    Sammy still has dreams of returning to the music industry, but for the time being, she's making money as a dancer. She's also acting as Rico's eyes and ears on the street. He has threatened to implicate her in a murder, and she feels powerless to escape his control. When Search, an old friend with connections in the music industry, makes it clear he wants nothing to do with her, Sammy feels all her hope slipping away. Will she be stuck in this dark life forever? When she meets Power, a new man who's better and stronger than Rico ever was, things start to look up for Sammy. It only gets better when she and Mouse bump into each other and heal their broken friendship. Both women have come to see the damage that Rico has done to them, and now they want revenge. The only one with the power and reach to pull off a hit on Rico is Power. When Sammy tells him about the plan, he's willing to help out on one condition: Sammy will have to deliver his enemy--who just happens to be Mouse's man Tango. Will Sammy be willing to betray her friend once again if it means she can finally be set free from Rico?
