2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another Superb Book by Sammy Franco By Eric M. Tull Multiple attackers is a topic that doesn't receive much coverage in traditional martial arts. And, a lot of the techniques they teach to deal with this situation will end up getting you killed. Sammy Franco does a wonderful job of cutting through the B.S. to give practical tips on how to deal with this difficult situation. I especially liked his discussion of the "human shield" and the use of movement. These are critical concepts that everyone should know. Also, be sure to check out his DVD, Rat Packed: Fighting Multiple Attackers in the Streets. It's a great companion to this book.

By TFLReader I used to think that I would "never" be in a position where I would have to defend myself and I was proven wrong several years ago. This led me to start training in self-defense and some of the best books that I have found on the subject are Sammy Franco's. To think that I would never have to defend against multiple attackers is ignorance at its best and Franco's latest has some amazing tips on doing just that. I love that his training provides simple techniques and strategies that anyone can use if they study the material and apply the principles properly. This is another very well written and well-organized​ guide from Franco that leaves me feeling safer and more prepared for the world that we live in. Recommended.

Hayes An absorbing fast-reading 742 pages, four novels published 2004-2008, reflecting on four decades 1960s-1990s through the lives of a group of Yale buddies. The spirit of those times is powerfully suggested without discussing the antiwar movement, the civil rights movement, the yippies, hippies, Black Panthers or Weathermen, or Watergate, or Iran-Contra, or Desert Storm "Shock & Awe" -- subjects exhaustively covered in other novels and nonfiction. "The meritocracy" is an ironic reference to this group of pals, from elite families -- people who sincerely subscribe to the doctrine of equal opportunity but gracefully and without guilt accept that the system selects and grooms those destined for power, wealth and leadership. Louie, the narrator, is a lower class Jew who gets to Yale on scholarship and accidentally falls in with these upper class meritocrats. One other Jew belongs: Adam, the nerd who scored 800 on his math SAT, quiet, never reckless. As designated driver when the rest of them are drunk, he has an accident which scars all their lives for the next three decades. The last book "Adam the King," features 50-year old Adam, billionaire, as the 90s close -- end of a millenium. This is the most moving and well-written of the four books in my opinion. We finish asking ourselves what does the next century or millenium portend? What has become of the "Best and the Brightest," American "exceptionalism", the blessings of liberty, the pursuit of happiness?

He is really, really good (see my review of Meritocracy, published 10 years go now). Four Lewis novels are contained here, a whole world of the novelists imagination. The physical book is a delight to hold and read and I wish more literary fiction was available like this.

Going to have to get the hard copy just so I can see the sketches. Having a great uncle who fought and died with the British Army during WWI, it would've been nice to see the sketches. To get a better idea. on what it was like. Also, it would've helped with what the author was describing in the chapters.,

It is something that is on the news and in the newspapers daily. Sexual abuse seems to be at epic proportions in our society today. When I read, I like to chose books that take me away from the daily happenings. Perhaps "cozy mysteries" would seem to be a strange choice, but most of them depict people I can like and some humor. I decided to send the book back.

I didn’t know about her other series. I was on Amazon searching for books to add to my Books Coming Soon page and the cover just pulled me right in. The book arrived and story picked up right where the cover left off.Angie is quite a woman as is her grandmother, Charlotte. To survive having your mother/daughter disappear without a trace is just tragic. Then all these years later her body is found so very close to her home. That is heart wrenching. Angie and Charlotte had moved on with their lives but they had grown apart. Angie ended up in Arizona and didn’t visit very often. When her grandmother call her home her number one mission is to find the person who killed her mother. But her grandmother needed her help with another matter as well. Once she is home the women pick up like they were never apart and Angie starts to feel at home again in Harbor Haven. There have been some changes, some good, some bad, but Angie learns you can go home again.These are 2 extraordinary characters and I was able to relate to them so easily. The needlepoint thread that pulls the plots together is a strong one. I loved that both men and women were part of the Mainely Needlepointers. Needlepoint can be very relaxing and challenging at the same time. Angie is barely a beginner and her grandmother is the expert and the rest of the group falls everywhere in between.The murder from the past collides with the murder in the present and Angie is like a dog with bone as tries to untwist all the threads to solve both cases. As she does this she reacquaints herself with the people of Harbor Haven. She gets together with her old friends and meets several new residents.The town is a hot spot for tourists so it is the perfect setting for a new cozy series. The author has really grabbed my attention with this first book. I am so excited for the next one. Charlotte has a big day to plan for and Angie has a new job. Threads of Evidence comes out in September.

Book 1, cozy murder mystery based in Maine with needlepoint talk By Angel-Kat This is the first book of a cozy mystery series based in Maine with needlepoint as the connection for a group of characters. I have never read the author before and feel she writes well. I enjoy stories based in New England, especially coastal towns, I like cats, I did a bit of needlepoint a long time ago… There were two murder mysteries to solve. It followed the usual cozy formula that the main character, an amateur or curious but untrained sleuth, ends up solving crimes with a side kick friend or two, of course minimal help from authorities, going out on limbs because there is just no time to get the police there for back up, etc. [hmm, I don’t think that needs a “spoiler alert” because I didn't say how.]I really wanted to like this book. I still want to like it and give it a “good” 4star rating but I had a problem, I didn't find the characters in the book likeable. I didn't enjoy their interaction until the last quarter of the book. I found many of the needlepoint sampler quotes depressing. I forced myself to finish and was glad because I started liking it by the end. I want to see if it took me a while to “warm up” to the characters, or if it is part of the struggle getting a new series’ foundation in place. It is well written and a good mystery and that is why I’ll read the next release.Format: Borrowed eBook

About the Author Luis López Nieves Irrumpió de manera espectacular en el ambiente literario en 1984 al publicar su relato histórico Seva, que se convirtió en un gran éxito literario. En el 2000 recibió el Primer Premio del Instituto de Literatura (Premio Nacional de Literatura) por el libro de cuentos históricos La verdadera muerte de Juan Ponce de León. En el 2005 recibió el mismo premio por segunda vez con El corazón de Voltaire, proclamado el mejor libro del año. En el 2011 el periódico El Nuevo Día proclamó El corazón de Voltaire Uno de los diez mejores libros de la década . Su novela más reciente es El silencio de Galileo, seleccionada por el Instituto de Literatura como la mejor novela del 2009 y alabada en tres continentes. Es doctor en Literatura Comparada por la Univer-sidad del Estado de Nueva York en Stony Brook. En el 2004 fundó la primera Maestría en Creación Literaria de América Latina, la cual dirige. También es fundador de la Biblioteca Digital Ciudad Seva (CiudadSeva.com), que cuenta con más de 4600 cuentos clásicos. Desde el 2007 es Escritor Residente de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. Sus relatos han sido incluidos en importantes antologías internacionales como El cuento hispanoamericano (Menton, FCE, México), El cuento hispanoamericano en el siglo XX (Burgos, Castalia, España), El muro y la intemperie (Ortega, EE.UU.) y Cuentos para ahuyentar el turismo (Alfonso y Jorge Rodríguez, Cuba).

La manera en que se narra y cómo se presentan las emociones y reacciones de cada personaje, y cómo se despliega la investigación sobre el corazón del ilustre Voltaire hacen de la historia un relato mucho más verosímil.
