Lord Philippe Lavay once took to the high seas armed with charm as lethal as his sword, and a stone-cold conviction: he'll restore his family's fortune and honor, no matter the cost. Victory is at last within reach—when a brutal attack snatches it from his grasp and lands him in Pennyroyal Green.
An afternoon of bliss brings a cascade of consequences for Elise Fountain. She is shunned by her family and ousted from a job she loves, and her survival means a plummet down the social ladder to a position no woman has yet been able to keep: housekeeper to a frighteningly formidable prince.
The bold and gentle Elise sees past his battered body into Philippe's barricaded heart . . . and her innate sensuality ignites his blood. Now a man who thought he could never love and a woman who thought she would never again trust must fight an incendiary passion that could be the ruin of them both.

If you appreciate dry wit, amazing mastery of language and great characters, read Long By Kathleen McClain Elise was kicked out of her home when she got pregnant as a teen but found a refuge teaching at a girl’s school. Then she lost her job there as well and has to take a job as a housekeeper for a churlish, ill-tempered Bourbon prince temporarily renting a home in Pennyroyal Green. There she trades barbs with Prince Phillipe, who is recovering from wounds wrought by a gang of cutthroats. A warrior, sailor and spy, he is an amazing fighter. And charmer, when he wants to be. Unable to take on dangerous activities until he heals from his wounds, he is almost broke and worries about not holding up the financial responsibilities for his family. Elise must also battle a coterie of servants who have not had to work much at the rental property, but if she doesn’t get them in shape she will lose her job and be unable to support her son. Elise’s father is gentry, but low on the totem pole of society, while Phillipe is a prince. The pair believe there can never be anything serious between them, and she is concerned her heart will be broken again if she submits to his lure.Long is my favorite historical romance writer and I’ve read everything she’s written. I confess that, overall, I have become an impatient reader. I tend to skip over a lot of slower stuff. But Long is one of my exceptions to that. I read every word. She is a great writer. She has a biting wit. She has wonderful similes and metaphors. Her characters show deep insights into people and life. She is the only author I know whose books I would purchase without a single review. Examples of her skill:Surprise is shown thusly-- “Mrs. Winthrop’s eyebrows launched like birds flushed from shrubbery.”After writing a very serious letter, Elise “sprinkled sand over the text of it with the gravity of someone trickling new earth into a grave.”Elise’s six year old son “adopted new words the way some people adopted puppies or kittens.”Ah, still my beating heart! I eat these kinds of things up like chocolate truffles.About the specifics of the story. Phillipe reminded me a bit of the Duke in my favorite Long novel, What I Did for a Duke. Melancholy, lonely, hurting, and temperamental but kind underneath. Witty like that duke as well. Elise is sharp and strong and wonderfully manipulative in a good way and witty and passionate. Jack, her son, is smart and funny and charming. I love Long’s dialogue. It’s not only witty but shows character as well. It crackles with tension and humor. The characters in this tale do not say and do wildly funny things as often as they did in What I Did… but they are still wonderful. He is French and every time he does something that perturbs or upsets her, they both say he is only “being French” as a way of getting past hard feelings, sexual longings, etc. Even if whatever he says or does has nothing to do with his being French.SIGH. I don’t know what else to say. I didn’t like this as well as What I Did… but I still think it is ten times better than 90% of the romance novels I read. Try Long. You’ll like her. And, be sure to read What I Did for a Duke.

I wasn't really blown by it but it was enjoyable to read. This story is about Elise Fountain, a lady who had a child out of wedlock, was disowned by her family and had been teaching at Miss Marietta Endicott's Academy. She had to be let go due to the fact that her having a child was known. Desperate, she answered an ad for a housekeeper at a manor rented by Lord Philippe Lavay, an agent of the crown who was recovering from injuries at Pennyroyal Green. The book opens with an enjoyable battle of wits between the two and instantly, you are hooked to the story. I really loved all "battle of wits" between Philippe and Elise. Their interactions were fairly sizzling off the page while reading. The slow development of their romance was great and I loved that it wasn't a love at first sight thing. I also loved how both characters were fully developed and well fleshed out. However, I felt that Elise was just too perfect. Sure, there were references to her stupidity as a younger woman which resulted in her son but still. She was just too perfect (yes, I am saying it again)! Another thing that I noticed is that it was fairly monotonous since a big chunk of the story happens with Elise acting as a housekeeper and reforming the servants. The story does speed up by the last few chapters of the book so I was able to finish it (almost became a DNF). I am definitely glad I finished it and this will not be my last Julie Anne Long book!eARC received from publisher in exchange for an honest review

The plot is so well-developed that, even though this book is part of a series, it is a great standalone story and the reader can easily understand the flaws and strengths of each character. Ms. Long made it so easy to be caught up in the dialogues and scenarios...truly engaging writing! I would definitely read this author's work again.Con:The "sensual" scenes, which were extremely graphic, seemed jarring and out of place compared to the tone describing the rest of Elise and Philippe's story. Their lovemaking was certainly plausible but akin to seeing 10 minutes of an X-rated movie spliced into Masterpiece Theatre.
