This book is more than just a love story with a HEA!" ~Twin Sisters Rockin' Book Reviews "I haven't read anything this exciting in a long time, I tend to play it safe with certain books but this one, full of angst, sterling writing and marvellous character creations, the side players were just as complex and endearing as the main protagonists." ~Nic's Novel Idea "...this story just hits the mark for me, it is a little different from a lot of her other work and is executed perfectly. The character development is so well done that you quickly build an image of and an attachment to these characters as is the case with all of Tess' books." ~Fictional Men's Page for Book Ho's "...this book just floored me, in the best way possible. It was so beautifully written and dealt with the issues so sensitively and with so much detail." ~Brittany's Book Blog "A story of healing and learning to love them selves as well as the other this story will touch you. Ms. Oliver creates situations for her characters that are original and ground-breaking when addressing these issues. We have a group of friends that cover a broad spectrum of personalities and addictions. This is Tommy and Sugar’s story and the journey that they embark on to find their freedom through self-forgiveness and love.We are introduced to Tommy Jameson first, a bad boy with an addiction and that finds himself incarcerated due to his uncontrollable temper. He is his families’ heir and is a big disappointment to them. Tommy is given no choice other than to enter a rehabilitation center or face jail time. At twenty-five you would think he would have his life under control but his susceptibility to drugs and his uncontrollable rage leaves no other option for him, except rehab. During his stay he meets Sugar and Julian, two other patients with addiction problems. Tommy recognizes Sugar as his forever love, yet with his problems does not feel worthy of her.Sugar Scarborough is a lost girl in a woman’s body. Her loveless life and feelings of unworthiness has led her down a path of drugs and promiscuity. She is a giver and everyone loves her with the exception of her mother, the person she needs to love and support her. When she is admitted to Green Willow Recovery Center, she meets Julian Fitzpatrick who is almost considered a life resident and Tommy Jameson. They form a strange friendship and support system with each other. Julian is her friend and sounding board while Tommy is something else altogether. When the friends are forced to flee the Recovery Center, they find a way to survive and function in the outside world. As Tommy would say they have each other’s back as they work together to stay alive!Hero: Tommy Jameson 4.5 starsHeroine: Sugar Scarborough 4.5 starsPlot: 4.5 starsSteam Level: 4.5 starsCliffhanger: NoWould I recommend this book: Yes! A great author takes the reader on an emotional journey that leaves them breathless with the unexpected. That is the case for me and "That Time with Sugar." Any one who is familiar with my reviews is aware that I am a huge fan of author, Tess Oliver. However, that does not negate the truthfulness of the claims I make with regards to my reviews of her books. So, let me tell you what happened to me. When I first began reading the book, I was shocked to find that I really didn't care much for the two main characters, Tommy and Sugar. How was I ever going to read a book when I didn't care for the characters? In fact, I put the book down for a day or two before deciding to continue on with it.As the story proceeded, the strangest thing began to happen. I found myself so deep into the storyline and transformed by what I was reading that I truly began to emphathize with the characters. As the mystery unfolded, I found I could not put the book down and was really fascinated. Aha! That is what a great author does. She twists you at your very core and then takes you on a journey that will leave you bewildered and breathless. So, what is the book about? Well, we have several very flawed characters who are struggling with self issues, anger, drugs, you name it. When Tommy Jameson meets Sugar in rehab, he struggles to main control of his emotions. You see, Sugar has the unsettling ability to twist his guts from the inside out. Tommy is crazy about her but she uses her body almost as a weapon against him and it eats away at his already tenious anger issues. However, soon they will find that they will have more to deal with at the rehab center that just their emotional issues and the outcome will be more than any of them will expect.I was very pleasantly shocked and unsettled by this read since it really took me by surprise. However, in the end it was another exceptional read by Ms. Oliver. Do yourself a favor and put this on your "to read" list.

Great read - 4.5* By Mellaz That Time With Sugar by Tess OliverThis book has been on my wishlist since before its release, so when I was offered a copy in exchange for a review, I jumped right at it. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed several other books by this author and I thought that That Time With Sugar would follow along the same lines. Well, let's just say this wasn't quite like anything I've read before - and I really enjoyed it! The story is basically told in reverse where we first meet the interesting trio of misfits - Tommy, Sugar (yes, it's her name) and Jules - at an upscale rehab clinic. All have their own addictions and illnesses that they're dealing with and either trying to overcome or just live with. The story is told by Tommy, however all three of the main characters were absolutely captivating from the get-go. Tommy is definitely a complicated man with deep anger issues but you could feel his love for Sugar and really, you just can't help but love him. I wasn't a fan of Sugar to begin with because of her beyond-flirty nature, but thanks to the way the book is written and that its told by Tommy who is insanely in love with her, you end up loving her too. As Tommy says '...she finds good in everything.' And Jules with his idiosyncrasies, and how he handled the blows thrown at him, was probably the most fascinating to me and I definitely preferred him off his meds than on!While this is far from a light and fluffy read, I did find myself smiling at times and other times swallowing back tears. There was also plenty of intrigue to keep me guessing and I loved how everything unfolded. The book was beautifully written, but I really wish there had been more of the present day. But maybe I'm just greedy, I don't know. Great read and I can definitely recommend it with 4.5***Book gifted by author in exchange for an honest review.Reviewed for Jo&IsaLoveBooks Blog
