I read, and then I contact the publishers with my thoughts on how they can make improvements. Those contacts are always private (I don't like to bash people who make an honest effort to put out a good product), but I decided to make this contact public. The first issue of TulipTree Review is excellent in all regards, in my humble opinion. Selection of writing, layout, quality of paper materials, all excellent. I'm more of a prose than a poetry person, and the prose here is wonderful. The magazine contains a mixture of fiction (flash, full-length stories, excerpts), nonfiction & creative nonfiction. And a range of poetry, from serious to humorous. I especially liked the two longest stories, "Me & Jules" and "The Yin and the Yang of It." The first made me think of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye and the second was kind of like Vonnegut. "Skinny Girls" is excellent as well, and so is the nonfiction piece "On Looking Back at War."The interior design of the magazine is first-rate. Not sure what size font was used, but it's a serif that's large enough to be easy on the eyes. And there's plenty of space between the lines, so you don't get a cramped feeling. The size of a magazine is important, and this one is about 10" x 8 ½". It's not so long that it's unwieldy, and it's wide enough so the pages stay open without having to be pinned by a thumb. And the cover is good. It FEELS good, slightly matted, not glossy. Lastly, the binding is tight. It will stand up to lots of rereads.I can't see any way to improve this magazine. Kudos to the people who produced it. I'm sure you get tired of slogging through the slush pile, but I hope you continue to pull gems from it. You certainly know how to present them. And consider submitting to the various prizes (Pushcart, Best Stories and so on). You might have some prizewinners here.
