FOURTEEN hundred years ago, in the sweet days of autumn, when the woods of Gartan are clothed in crimson and gold, and the still waters of Lough Veagh reflect the deep blue of the skies above, Eithne, the wife of Fedhlimidh, Prince of Tir-Connell, had a strange dream. It seemed to her that an angel of God stood beside her, bearing in his hands a veil scattered all over with the Bowers of Paradise, and that, spreading it out, he bade her admire its beauty. Eithne was a daughter of kings, but never before had she seen so marvellously fair a web; she stretched out her hands to grasp it, but even as she touched it, it rose and fluttered lightly into the air. Over hill, mountain, and lough floated its shadowy loveliness, till it rested at last on the moors and mountains of a land that lay far away in the moaning seas. Then Eithne wept for the loss of the beautiful veil, but the angel comforted her.

Interesting By Casuarina This little book gives an overview of the life and times of St Columba, the guy who established the monastery at Iona, off the Isle of Mull, Scotland. It delves into his Irish past and gives the reasons why he felt he had to leave, and why he headed for Scotland. It's not a large book, but it does provide some historical insight. Anyone who is going, or has been to Iona, and wants to know more about the man, this book provides just enough to wet the appetite.

The Wars of the Jews: history of the destruction of Jerusalem, by Flavius Josephus

About the Author Josephus Flavius (ca. 37-100) was a Jewish historian, diplomat, and military leader, and the sole source of information concerning numerous events in the final centuries of the Jewish state. According to his own account, Josephus was born to an aristocratic, priestly family in Jerusalem. He was well educated in Judaism and in the Greek disciplines. At the age of 16 he became interested in the principal Jewish sects of his time and lived 3 years in the wilderness with a hermit, probably an Essene. At 19 Josephus became a Pharisee. At 26 he went on a mission to Rome and succeeded in securing the release from prison of several Judean priests. He came home impressed with the grandeur and might of Rome, only to find that the Jewish revolt had started. Josephus was appointed governor of Galilee with responsibility for its defense. After his defeat at Jotapata, he escaped but later surrendered to the Romans. They treated him well, largely because his prediction that Vespasian would become emperor came true. Formerly known as Joseph ben Mattathias, Josephus took the Emperor's family name, Flavius. He was an eyewitness to the siege and fall of Jerusalem, after which he returned to Rome, where Vespasian granted him Roman citizenship and a pension. Subsequently, Josephus devoted himself to writing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Book contents By Vincent Lauria This is one great book about Jewish history I never knew about. A little hard to read at times , but Josephus was a 1st century man writing in his time in the manor and language they were use to. The other thing is the detail and the graphics of the peoples sufferings. I strongly recommend this book for history buffs who like this period of history.V. LauriaLong Island,NY

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Accurate History By KandyKorn Josephus was there. And he told it like it was. The tragedy, the horror, everything. Read of a rebellious people who hated the Romans and their authority, while still claiming to be God's people. Read how the Romans tried to make it right for the Jews, but their resistance is beyond human thinking. Their rebellions, endless fighting among themselves at the cost of their own lives and their wives and children, and the demise of the Temple. It will make you cry.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. pleased By Andrea T. Polecheck I am learning so much about the wars, which is my intention. The book is layed out differently than most but it is rather easy reading.....some use of the language differs from our use of the word which I find interesting. It is alot to read but I'd say very worthwhile if you want to learn more about this history.

I read, and then I contact the publishers with my thoughts on how they can make improvements. Those contacts are always private (I don't like to bash people who make an honest effort to put out a good product), but I decided to make this contact public. The first issue of TulipTree Review is excellent in all regards, in my humble opinion. Selection of writing, layout, quality of paper materials, all excellent. I'm more of a prose than a poetry person, and the prose here is wonderful. The magazine contains a mixture of fiction (flash, full-length stories, excerpts), nonfiction & creative nonfiction. And a range of poetry, from serious to humorous. I especially liked the two longest stories, "Me & Jules" and "The Yin and the Yang of It." The first made me think of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye and the second was kind of like Vonnegut. "Skinny Girls" is excellent as well, and so is the nonfiction piece "On Looking Back at War."The interior design of the magazine is first-rate. Not sure what size font was used, but it's a serif that's large enough to be easy on the eyes. And there's plenty of space between the lines, so you don't get a cramped feeling. The size of a magazine is important, and this one is about 10" x 8 ½". It's not so long that it's unwieldy, and it's wide enough so the pages stay open without having to be pinned by a thumb. And the cover is good. It FEELS good, slightly matted, not glossy. Lastly, the binding is tight. It will stand up to lots of rereads.I can't see any way to improve this magazine. Kudos to the people who produced it. I'm sure you get tired of slogging through the slush pile, but I hope you continue to pull gems from it. You certainly know how to present them. And consider submitting to the various prizes (Pushcart, Best Stories and so on). You might have some prizewinners here.

Did you believe writing was a safe pastime?

It was scarcely the first time that bestselling author Sheila Armstrong had died on stage; it would most certainly be the last. DCI Alex Warren and his girlfriend, DI Sandra McKinnon, return from a short holiday, but hardly manage to step from the plane before he’s called to investigate the suspicious death. Sheila,a member of Eastfarm Writers, has been stabbed to death, on stage, in a school, during a rehearsal of a play she’d written. Her death mimics the plot.Within hours Sandra is roped into investigating a series of crimes which appear to be mob related. Both their enquiries run in parallel as they each struggle to make progress while supporting each other professionally and emotionally.

Written to Death is the third novel of Zach Abrams’ - Alex Warren Murder Mystery series. It’s a tartan noir thriller set in and around Glasgow. This British Police Procedural features Detective Chief Inspector Alex Warren as the senior investigating officer together with female detective, Sergeant Sandra McKinnon and supported by a team of detectives, scene of crime technicians and other specialists. Running parallel with the main murder investigation, the teams research a range of other criminal activities including organised crime, blackmail and extortion. Away from the crime investigation, there’s family drama as well as romance and more than a sprinkling of humour. Authors and writers will perhaps recognise characters types depicted in writing groups and readers familiar with the geography of Scotland and Glasgow in particular can associate with the area as the detectives tread their weary path on their way to researching the crimes and solving the mystery.Other books in the Alex Warren Murder Mystery series are ‘Made a Killing’ and ‘Written to Death’. In addition Zach Abrams is the author of two financial crime thrillers, ‘Ring Fenced’ and ‘Source’ and he has co-written ‘Twists and Turns’ an anthology of short stories. All Zach Abrams’ books can be purchased on either ebook or paperback format. Audiobook versions of Made a Killing and Ring Fenced are currently available and his other titles will be coming soon.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Dazzling Murder Mystery By Maggie The new Alex Warren murder mystery by Zach Abrams, Written To Death, is wonderfully entertaining and exciting from beginning to end. Immediately upon his return from vacation, the skillful sleuth learns that a prominent member of a writing group has been stabbed to death at a local school. Suspicion points in many directions, as the decedent, Sheila Armstrong, has many enemies, including the victims of her savage book reviews. But Alex and his investigate partner, girl-friend Sandra, have gimlet eyes focused heavily on Sheila’s husband and his inamorata. The wheels of justice seem to be turning in a frightening wrong direction. The surprise ending is stunning, a return to harmony and justice, with a reminder that the cops can go wrong in terrible ways. I loved the witty dialogue, colorful characters, and various vernacular voices, not to mention the topography of Scotland. BBC would increase its already high ratings in America if it hired Abrams for a sharply etched murder mystery on television. I recommend this book to all mystery lovers!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. You can judge this book by its cover - great! By Haley's Comments This is a terrific title that opens to a riveting story about a murder in the theatre world. Detective Alex is on the case, and the theme flows in a well-paced manner. You might not like some of the characters, but they are quite realistic and add flavor to the book. I liked Alex's relationships with his girlfriend, Sandra, and his assistant, Sanjay - the latter added a bit of comic relief. There's a nice twist in the plot, which I shall not reveal, but I doubt you'll see it coming. Mr. Abrams continues to turn out a well thought out book, with realistic dialogue and some real-life situations.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Average By Amazon Customer An average detective story, it didn't really engross me. I rather lost track of the second plot but trusted the two would intertwine at the end. It became a bit too didactic about police procedures in parts and a bit like like a travelogue for Glasgow in others, which may add to the readers' knowledge but tends to slow the plot, definitely in need of some editing. To be honest it's a couple of weeks since I finished reading it and I can't remember much about the plot or main characters so they obviously didn't make much of an impression. It's not a bad book, but nothing to get excited about either. I probably won't look for others in the series.

Ways I Never Thought of To Combat Arthritis By Nneka Gunn Until reading this book, I never realized that there were so many natural ways to combat arthritis. I have had joint pain and swelling in my wrist and fingers for years. Normally, I would just take some ibuprofen and hope that the pain would go away. It usually did after a few days of suffering only to return a couple of days later.A few among the many things I learned in this book is that I can:- Start taking magnesium and vitamin D supplements to help my body internally- Certain foods that can trigger arthritis flareups- Things to avoid like caffeine and non movement of those jointsThis was a very helpful guide and a quick read at that. Great content that you can immediately implement.

After reading this book I have a whole new understanding. The author stars off with her own personal story which is awesome to know the stuff she is talking about is real and her actual experience. She explains the different types of arthritis and most importantly what you can do to make living with arthritis easier. Broken down into organized chapters the book was very easy to read. If you or anyone you know has arthritis this book is a must read!

Author is clear and sincere. One complaint - too many instances of saying "many studies are now indicating..." (or similar language). I'd like to have seem some sources cited, and very few were. Still, I like this book!

By Firth Whitehouse Irene Lewis-McCormick takes you through the science of HIIT,deftly explaining the "whys" and the "hows" of HIIT's effectiveness. The book provides easy-to-follow step by step instruction, with accompanying photos of upper body, core, and lower body exercises. The role of recovery is covered in depth. There are many wonderful examples of workout sets that can be used to achieve lasting fitness results. The exercises are scalable and can be tailored to your fitness, experience and skill level. Although the book is aimed at women, rest assured that men can benefit, too.I highly recommend this book! Having trained with Irene in the past, I guarantee that this book adheres to the same dynamic and precise instruction style that you would experience if you are ever lucky enough to train with her in person.

What I liked most about this book is that the exercises can be incorporated in to any workout. The pictures give a great reference on how to execute the moves correctly. It includes information about anatomy and the muscles you are targeting, working with toys and tools, warm ups and cooling down, and plenty of exercises. My favorite parts were the exercise menus, 20 minute workout examples, and access to an online video library. I am excited to add some new moves to my regular workouts and to try the 20 minute workouts on their own. I would highly recommend to any level from beginner to advanced.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good resource By N. Aucoin I was a bit hesitant to put this on my early review request list, the last women's specific exercise book was a complete bomb for me. This one is much much better. The language is clear, there's only a smidgen of implying that women couldn't possibly want to get strong (aargh, toning!), instead focussing on the benefits of this type of workout. For me, the clear explanations of the theories behind HIIT were the most helpful part, and I"m looking forward to trying out the workouts. They have clear descriptions of the workouts, with usefully repeated information in the various sections, as well as good descriptions of the various exercises.

The first trade edition of the cult classic from the artist/author hailed by Iggy Pop as “the great nightmare anti-hero of the new age,” legendary tattoo artist Jonathan Shaw, that chronicles a scandalous, degenerative addiction between two people—a wild, brutal, passionate, and unstoppable ride into depravity and darkness through the back alleys of Rio De Janeiro and New York City.

A legendary tattoo master and notorious creator of trendsetting underground art, Jonathan Shaw has created a masterpiece with this powerful story that captures the destructive addiction of love, sex and drugs, embodied in two people whose irresistible passions threaten to destroy them.

In the wild backwaters of Rio de Janeiro and New York, motorcycle-riding, nomadic outlaw poet Ignacio Valencia Lobos—known as Cigano—attempts in vain to curb the unhinged habits of his lover Narcisa, a crack-smoking philosopher prostitute. Though he knows they will destroy each other, Narcisa is an exquisite poison he cannot resist. As they navigate the chaos of her downward spiral—dragged deeper by the gravity of drugs, burglaries and violence, Cigano recounts a love affair doomed by insanity, dysfunction, and vice.

A magnificent epic of literary genius, Narcisa belongs among the works of such greats as Charles Bukowski, Henry Miller, William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Irvine Welsh, and Hunter S. Thompson.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Overlong and Under-Edited By S.K. In my opinion this book was overlong, under-edited, and monotonous. A lot of repetition and interchangeable scenes could have been cut out. There was no growth, no progression from either character despite the length of the book. The dialogue is the same, the scenes are the same, every time is one last time but ends up the same way -- I get this as an illustration of their relationship, but *every time* this happens doesn't need to be in the book because it winds up exhausting and tedious to read. There was a hint of some interesting drama with Doc, but that apparently didn't go anywhere and we were left with never-ending two-dimensional scenes of the same exact thing. The writing felt un-polished and amateur. It was tiring to read in Ignacio's voice. I don't mind unlikable characters, but Ignacio delves neither into himself nor into Narcisa in any meaningful way, sticking with the addiction/female succubus cliche. There were pages of the same exact description of their life and Narcisa's personality that were unnecessary and all phrased in the same way.I felt like there was potential in this story, because it definitely had the seed of something great in Narcisa's character and in the illustration of romantic addiction, but it didn't really deliver.

12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. The Blood of Poets By macocael Red Smith really didn't say "Writing is easy. You just open a vein and bleed," but the line was so good that people have quoted his advice over and over and over again. If only they followed it! Today's market seems to be dominated by Creative Writing School graduates who consider a paper cut adequate bloodletting for their vocation. The result is arch prose and the glib ironies of living in a postmodern media cocoon. These folks wouldn't know a real conflict from a bad hair day, and the closest they will ever come to an Oedipal Karthasis is when they misplace their Armani eyeglasses and have to tear their eyes away from the tube in order to find them.So thank god (or perhaps the devil) for a book like Narcisa, which plumbs the depths of a human sinkhole that makes contemporary tours of Hell look like a stroll through Beaver Cleaver's neighborhood. This book is not for those who faint at the sight of blood. This book has all the purgatorial torments of a Joe Coleman painting described in the acid-pitted prose of a Charles Bukowski. Narcisa not only hacks up the frozen seas within us, it serves up the crushed ice with a draught of absinthe and a hot shot for after, puts a gun to your head and says, "Drink." You won't be sorry you did, but you'll be wondering what hit you when you turn the final page and close the book, its surreal laughter echoing in your head. This is what real writing is all about. It's raw, it's rasping, it shaves away illusions like a potato grater on bared skin, but the bloodletting is purgative. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger - and funnier too.It is high time that this book, which has become a collector's item, be reissued. Originally available in a small press run, Narcisa quickly joined the ranks of other subterranean classics such as those issued by City Lights, and thus it continues that vital tradition which brought us the Beats and their offbeat descendents. But Narcisa is also heir to some of the most central figures of American literature. Like Melville's Ishmael or Cormac McCarthy's "kid," its protagonist is a lone searcher wandering through an apocalyptic landscape at once deeply intimate and intriguingly alien, risking everything to steal some fire from the malevolent forces ranged against him. Transgressors pay dearly for the treasures they bring back to the tribe, and judging from the terrible beauty of this particular prize, the author certainly opened more than one vein. It's that good.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A New Classic Of Outlaw Literature By Daniel vandenberg “Between us, there always seemed to exist some deeper identification, born of a deep, unspoken bond; an underlying sense of kinship. It was as if loving Narcisa was like loving some wayward, feral strand of myself; a distorted funhouse mirror image of my own brutalised, mangled, forgotten inner child, restructured into rude juvenile delinquent female form, with a crooked, charismatic smile of mischief at the end of her fuzzy pink tongue.”Jonathan Shaw’s Narcisa is a classic tale of addiction. Not of drug addiction, although there is plenty of that riddling its decrepit, cobble-stoned sub-tropical streets, but of the addiction of one person for another. What, in most other instances, would be called “love”, although you won’t find many referring to this book as a love story. That is, however, exactly what it is; as buried as it may be beneath a thousand grimy layers of depravity, dysfunction, violence and insanity, Narcisa is a far more realistic, accurate, and pure portrayal of love than whatever turgid s***Hollywood or Jodi Picoult is churning out these days. Shaw captures the side of love that sends Hollywood running for the hills, the tortuous, strung-out junkie experience of knowing that someone or something is pure poison and loving it, needing it anyway.Ignacio Valencia Lobos, or Cigano, is a Yamaha-riding, Gypsy-wandering bandito poet who returns to the Brazil of his rampant youth and finds his heroin/e in the form of Narcisa, a schizophrenic crack-smoking esoteric-philosophising teenage prostitute, and down the cosmic rabbit hole he goes. Narcisa charts the endlessly circling existential hell Cigano finds himself in, fully aware of how bad Narcisa is for him and yet unable to let her go.This novel reads like a long-lost literary classic, and references to the Internet and mobile phones feel almost idiosyncratic in a tale that would otherwise slide in easily beside older works by Kerouac, Burroughs, Miller, Fante and Bukowski. Narcisa, reads, in fact, a lot like Bukowski, in its world-weariness and hard-edged skid row charm, that is, if Bukowski had ever gotten out of LA or done anything besides drifting between bars, menial jobs and cold water apartments. Narcisa shares with Bukowski and the Beats the same deep-burning poetic flare and earnest obsession with the types of people and experiences that most of society shuns or turns a deliberately blind eye to, but it also has a deep-rooted connection with its geographic setting: the exotic, equal parts beautiful and dangerous muggy urban jungle of Rio De Janeiro, and a knowledge that can only come from personal experience.Jonathan Shaw has had one hell of a life, and it fills this work of fiction like blood pumping through its veins. The son of legendary jazz musician Artie Shaw, Shaw spent his youth wandering the back roads and alleyways of South America much like the hero of his novel before making a name for himself in the US as one of the most revered tattoo artists of all time, counting notable figures such as Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop, Jim Jarmusch, Marilyn Manson and Kat Von D amongst his patrons and fans. Shaw eventually turned from skin to manuscript, and developed almost overnight cult status in the world of underground literature, with the first edition of Narcisa, released through musician and author Wes Eisold’s (American Nightmare, Cold Cave) indie publishing house Heartworm Press in 2007, selling out almost immediately, with out-of-print copies now going for as much as $300 a pop on Amazon and Ebay. While Internet resellers continue to make a fortune off his work, Shaw, who doesn’t even own a copy of his own book, has returned to South America and the nomad lifestyle, going where the road and his Harley take him, all the while tinkering away at his next projects, Scab Vendor, a collection of autobiographical tales dealing with his early years and his time spent in the tattoo business, and a new, completely revised and rewritten version of Narcisa. Both are to be released in the near future on major publishers, hopefully so that the world at large, and those who don’t have the time or money to seek out his ultra-rare early releases, will finally be able to discover the destined-to-be classic works of this literary master and true iconoclast.- Review taken from CVLT Nation
