This novel is equally suspenseful and inspirational, rich with symbolism and deeply moving. The author weaves themes of prophecy and mystery throughout the life-journey of the main character, drawing upon the universal human experiences of rejection and homecoming. The language of the book is beautiful as the intricacies of each person are described with care, and as the inner doubts and hopes of the characters collide in their struggles with trust and calling. A beautiful portrait of the human potential to wound, to heal, and to be swept up in the calling of faith.

By Ty Sohlman Melinda's book captivates the reader and takes us into a world that we can start to see, feel and almost touch. She pulls us into the mystery and before long, we feel as if we are living the story along with the heroine. I was reading this book on a plane during a red-eye flight.. The flight attendant must have noticed how captivated I was because she was eager to know what I was reading!

The Custom of the Country (Xist Classics), by Edith Wharton

Review 'Wharton captures with masterly ease the world of post-Civil War America in this brilliantly-written and highly-entertaining novel.' Charles Osborne, Sunday Telegraph

Review "A well-presented edition. Orgel's introduction is superior."--Marvin Magalaner, NYU

"An excellent edition, with just the right amount of apparatus."--Burton Raffel, University of Southwestern Louisiana

From the Publisher First published in 1913, Edith Wharton's The Custom Of The Country is scathing novel of ambition featuring one of the most ruthless heroines in literature. Undine Spragg is as unscrupulous as she is magnetically beautiful. Her rise to the top of New York's high society from the nouveau riche provides a provocative commentary on the upwardly mobile and the aspirations that eventually cause their ruin. One of Wharton's most acclaimed works, The Custom Of The Country is a stunning indictment of materialism and misplaced values that is as powerful today for its astute observations about greed and power as when it was written nearly a century ago.

I like to copy passages from her books just to feel how beautifully she constructs her sentences and paragraphs. I've also read Ethan Frome, Summer, House of Mirth, and Age of Innocence; they are all terrific novels. But The Custom of the Country is her best. Could there be a worse mother, wife, or daughter than Undine? And yet, she is too pathetic to hate; she is so needy and dependent upon material things. She's perhaps the most unliberated woman in literature! Do read this novel; you will love it and learn from it.

Before reading this novel recently (I'd hardly heard of it before), I'd read her much more famous "Age of Innocence" and "House of Mirth." I thought they were okay -- beautiful descriptive passages, brilliant flashes of psychological and political insight, but with boring characters and lame story lines. "The Custom of the Country" has all the fine qualities you expect to find in a good Wharton novel, but with an absolutely amazing protagonist -- Undine. "The Custom of the Country" is "Vanity Fair," with its much paler Becky Sharp, squared. This is what Thackeray would have written if he'd had a much keener and colder eye -- and a blacker sense of humor. This is now in my novelistic top ten -- along with (if you want to know some other books I like before taking my advice and buying/reading this): "Moby-Dick," "The Man Without Qualities," "Blood Meridian," "Remembrance of Things Past," and Burroughs' last major novel "The Western Lands."

By A Customer I have just finished reading Edith Wharton's THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY and have never wanted to strangle a protaganist so much in my life! Ms. Wharton has created a character that could rival any modern day soap opera vixen. Undine Spragg is spoilt, selfish, vain and socially ambitious. When Ms. Wharton writes from her perspective, I found myself at times feeling sorry for her. When she writes from the perspective of the people Undine ruins, I despised her. In the end, there is nothing kind that I can say about Undine Spragg. About Ms. Wharton, however, I can say she has again reestablished herself as a literary genius. In the character of Undine, Ms. Wharton criticizes the emptiness of greed mixed with vanity in a shallow person who knows nothing else. However, Ms. Wharton also makes it clear that Undine is not soley to blame for her character. "It is the custom of the country" her second father-in-law explains of Undine's stupidity, insensitivity and unending selfishness. Women who are so totally pampered and kept ignorant of the real world remain spoilt brats until they are old enough to truly hurt so many lives. The two saddest victims of her ruthlessness are her second husband Ralph, a sensitive writer from an old-money family, and their son Paul. Though it is doubtful anyone will like Undine, you will at times pity her. However, the genius of Edith Wharton is that through Undine we see the destruction of society and families by the ridiculous treatment of women in society of early 1900's. Another note on this particular edition of this and all Everyman books is that they are so beautifully crafted, it is always a treasure to read any book printed by this company. Besides being beautifully designed, Everyman editions also have wonderful chronologies of the author and historical references and literary events. They are truly elegant additions to any library.

If you're looking for a concise, no-holds-barred introduction to what it's like to live with and learn to manage OCD, this is the book for you. Jeremy Nickel breaks OCD and the various options for its treatment into brief, easy-to-read chunks, often sharing personal details of his own struggle with the disorder that range from the heartbreaking to the hilarious. I strongly recommend this book to those dealing with OCD, as well as the family, friends, and coworkers of those who have it.Note: As Nickel states in the book blurb, OCD Sucks! contains profanity. But it's really just a reflection of his frank and funny writing style as well as the frustration of dealing with OCD.

Are You Ready to Overcome Heartburn FAST?

Nexium, Zantac, Rolaids, Tums…have you tried all the drugs only to be on higher and higher doses and still experiencing heartburn? How about a 30 day plan that will eliminate heartburn and do a lot to reduce other complaints, like bloating, inflammation, fatigue, weight gain, nausea, constipation, gallbladder problems, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), to name a few? Saunders I love this book and reviewed it on my web site Heal Your Gut With Food (dot com). Here it is:What is one of the most over-used and prescribed drugs in America? You might immediately think of antibiotics. Those are definitely over-prescribed. However, the medications Craig Fear, NTP (Nutritional Therapy Practitioner) refers to in his new book, The 30-Day Heartburn Solution are anti-acid medications such as TUMS, Rolaids, and prescription medications including Prilosec and Zantac for heartburn and acid reflux. One of the most pervasive health myths is that the cause of heartburn is too much acid produced in the stomach. In this book, you’ll read why this is an idea whose time has come and gone. You may also be surprised to learn that contrary to popular belief, there is a connection between continued use of heartburn medications and nutritional deficiencies, bone loss, and further digestive problems!I like the assertion that the symptom of heartburn after eating a meal is an example of cause and effect. Remove the cause of the heartburn, and you will have a solution! In this case, Craig emphasizes the nutritional value of our diets in resolving heartburn and acid reflux. In some cases, other holistic interventions may be warranted. But the good news is, in many instances, dietary changes are all it takes! If you are one of the many people who have taken drugs or over-the-counter medications for chronic heartburn or acid reflux, I really think you could benefit from reading this book! You’ll learn about the science and connection between not only processed foods and heartburn or acid-reflux, but also the missing components of important nutrients that are largely missing from our modern diets. Vitamin A deficiency, for example, is linked to gut disease. Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride, a neurosurgeon who has conducted a great deal of research in this area on the relationship between gut and brain health, has written about this in her book Gut and Psychology Syndrome, and various papers and other literature.Craig provides a 3-Step Plan which involves dietary changes. These changes may not be what you expect as the conventional dietary change approach is quite different and might recommend stress reduction, eating low-fat foods, and eating less. You’ll also read in a subsequent chapter not just how to resolve heartburn, but why this book is a foundation is a means for optimizing overall health. In my opinion, any recommendation for solving a specific health problem ought to also include how the rest of the body is affected. I am in complete agreement with Craig that unlike the conventional view, maintaining optimal health requires a holistic approach rather than symptom management. So, I give a round of applause to the author for making this critical point very clear in this book. Finally, Craig provides meal plan ideas, recipes, and a few important foods or supplements that will help you achieve not only a resolution for digestive issues such as heartburn and acid reflux, but a solid foundation for overall wellness.Another extremely important fact you’ll uncover is that most restaurants and other businesses selling food do not offer real food to support optimal health. The reader is not only encouraged to become more comfortable with cooking at home and meal preparation, but is provided with simple tools and solutions to get the job done. I believe you will come away with a better understanding as to why eating out, ordering take out, and preparing frozen meals are not ideal means to achieving health after reading this book.Elements of the 30-Day Heartburn Solution:Five basic, adaptable tips for meal planningWhy fermented foods including sauerkraut, pickles and kimchi are essential foods to eliminate reflux, and recipesWhy fermented beverages like kombucha, beet kvass, and ginger ale are other excellent tools to resolve digestive issues and recipesHow to prepare bases including beef, chicken, and fish stock, and why these healing foods provide important nutrition to resolve digestive or gut issues that contribute to heartburn and other problemsRecipes for delicious main courses such as seafood curry, beef stew, salad dressings, grain-free breads,Grain-free breakfastsSoups and smoothiesLunch and dinner ideasHealthy snacksGrain-free menu plansAdditional resources for when you feel “stuck” and “in a rut” with meals

We'd probably be 100% heartburn free if we really did everything Craig suggests. We both had been on PPIs for more than a dozen years and had gone through the whole heartburn progression from Tums and Rolaids to Zantac before that. I had progressed to the point of food sometimes getting stuck in my esophagus, not able to pass to my stomach, even though I was taking omeprazol daily. This problem has not recurred in the 8 months since I took myself off the meds.Things I like about this book:- Craig shares his own story- the problems caused by heartburn meds are laid out- the theory and where it came from is well explained- an easy-to-follow plan is suggested- easy recipes are provided - I especially like the recipes for making probiotic drinks - check out his Web site for even more recipes- this isn't just for heartburn sufferers - it's a healthy eating plan that makes sense for everyoneBy the way, when I do have heartburn now, I drink a little raw milk (as suggested in the book), and I'm a happy camper. In my mom's case, it's difficult to get her to eat new things due to her Alzheimer's but just getting her off the meds, although difficult, was the best thing I could have done for her.

By Alice My husband and I were both on acid reflux medications for years (I was on mine for 20 years and he was on his for 10) and both developed osteoporosis which we learned is a side effect of long term use of proton pump inhibitors. This motivated us to get off these medications and we found Craig's 30 Day Heartburn solutions online and bought it and printed it out a year ago. We both were off of our medications by the end of the month and went off them gradually as he suggests in the book. We are both feeling the best we have in years and are eating much more healthily and see big improvements overall. I was also able to get off of fibromyalgia medication and no longer need prescription medications except for dry eye drops. As an added plus we both dropped several pounds without even dieting. It has recipes and ideas I could not have come up with on my own and has also helped with other Gastrointestinal issues and improved our digestion. We highly recommend the book to anyone with these issues. It is easy to follow and implement with good explanations on why these suggestions work for so many people.

Debut novelist Simon Kurt Unsworth sends the detective novel to Hell. In The Devil's Detective, a sea change is coming to Hell . . . and a man named Thomas Fool is caught in the middle.      Thomas Fool is an Information Man, an investigator tasked with cataloging and filing reports on the endless stream of violence and brutality that flows through Hell. His job holds no reward or satisfaction, because Hell has rules but no justice. Each new crime is stamped "Do Not Investigate" and dutifully filed away in the depths of the Bureaucracy. But when an important political delegation arrives and a human is found murdered in a horrific manner—extravagant even by Hell's standards—everything changes. The murders escalate, and their severity points to the kind of killer not seen for many generations. Something is challenging the rules and order of Hell, so the Bureaucracy sends Fool to identify and track down the killer. . . . But how do you investigate murder in a place where death is common currency? Or when your main suspect pool is a legion of demons? With no memory of his past and only an irresistible need for justice, Fool will piece together clues and follow a trail that leads directly into the heart of a dark and chaotic conspiracy. By Linda Painchaud-Steinman There are already a number of reviews detailing the plot of this novel (plus the basic plot outline can be found here on the Amazon order page) so for this review, I'll concentrate on the author's writing style. WITH NO SPOILERS.Simon Kurt Unsworth has filled his debut novel with hundreds of delicious little details about Hell and its residents. His vision is not the usual depiction of Hell. Example (on page 33) "Ah, but I see you are disappointed in the home of the Great Enemy...You expected perhaps, lakes of fire, bodies torn asunder on racks...That is no longer Hell, little angel, and hasn't been for an age or more..." Because of Unsworth's originality, the setting (Hell) almost becomes a character in and of itself. The setting/character of Hell torments its inhabitants by depriving them of hope and choice (page 67). And what is worse than that?Overall, I really enjoyed this mix of genres, as well as the depiction of the main character Thomas Fool. But I am rating the book four stars instead of five, because I think that some fans of these particular genres will be disappointed. Mystery fans for example, may prefer a "true" mystery with more clues and a more satisfying conclusion. Horror fans may want a bit more of those "lakes of fire", etc.But if you are a reader who is looking for something different, something that blends genres in a new way, I think you'll enjoy this novel, because the mix is something fresh and unexpected.

A fascinating study of Hell and humanity that never shies away from the dark journey it began By Bob Milne Clive Barker once wrote that “Hell is reimagined by each generation,” and, with The Devil's Detective, it is Simon Kurt Unsworth's turn to do the reimagining. His Hell definitely pays homage to the 'classic' vision, but is more about purgatory and hopelessness than actual punishment. It is a bleak and colorless slum, home to human sinners, fallen angels, demon masters, and all kinds of monsters. Far more dystopian ruin than biblical hell-and-brimstone, Hell is quite literally the ugliest, saddest city that you can imagine, torn asunder from the world, and buried beneath the cruel temptation of Heaven's light above. Our guide in this underworld is Thomas Fool, an Information Man who is akin to the saddest, most hopeless of bureaucrats. His job is to report on the atrocities of Hell, and to catalog the brutalities around him, but not to investigate them. He's like a burned out police detective, but one with no memory of his life before, and no hope for anything better before him. A cold, largely emotionless protagonist (think a later season Stabler from Law & Order: SVU, but without the rage), he's fascinating, but not a character to whom we can relate, or for whom we can root. When he's ordered to actually investigate a crime in which a human corpse was found without a soul, we're curious about where his story might go, but even the most optimistic reader would be hard-pressed to hold out any hope for him or his case. This is a hard book to categorize. Like Dante's Inferno, it's a book that's more about the place and the journey than the people within it. It's as fascinating as it is depressing, with visions of horrors and atrocities that will linger with you long after putting the book down. For instance, the flaming orphanage full of monstrous half-demon babies, abandoned by their human prostitute mothers, particularly sticks with me, as does the first attempt by real demon to rape, defile, and devour that soulless corpse. What story there is here is part police procedural and part political/religious thriller. The twists and tweaks that Unsworth makes to the procedural genre were, for me, the most intriguing aspect of the novel. The increasingly darker, more sinister, more carnivorous scenes with the Man of Plants and Flowers are remarkable, especially as we come to understand this mysterious informant is far more than just that. The scenes with Hell's coroner (think a bizarro, gothic take on Ducky from NCIS), who tests for souls using feces-encrusted communion wafers, are as unsettling as they are amusing, and the hopeless banter between Fool and his two fellow investigators is almost tragic, but one of the few threads of true humanity we find in the novel. On the religious/political side, we're set up for something unusual at the very beginning, when Fool is commanded to escort a delegation from Heaven, who have come for the random selection and escalation of damned souls. These angels are as cruel and arrogant as any demon, and it's clear there are ulterior motives to their every action. The rulers of Hell have, of course, ulterior motives at every turn as well, and their reasons for ordering Fool to actually investigate a human murder are far more about self-preservation than justice. As for the riots that eventually ensue . . . well, I won't betray the secrets there.Narratively, this is a very dense book, full of description and exposition, and not a lot of dialogue. It does tend to get very bogged down in words at times, and the often strained play on the name 'Fool' became a bit tiresome, but the imagination behind it all is what kept me reading. It's a book that will challenge a lot of readers, especially those who need happy endings or those those who feel strongly about issues of faith, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't give it a try. I keep coming back to that word, fascinating, but that's the best way I can think of to describe The Devil's Detective. It's not particularly enjoyable, and the bleak depths of winter are perhaps not the best time to wallow in such darkness and depression, but it is a fascinating study of Hell and humanity that never shies away from the journey it began.

I find it to be written with an exceptional knowledge of Western theology and mind set, and to have a good plot.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is not the sort of tale that seizes the reader; I was able to put it down and come back - until about the last third of the book, when I was "hooked". The plot is decent and not obvious, and I was surprised at the ending, so it was fairly good. But what makes this book a "must read" is the way it is written. Every phrase is crafted such that it creates images of darkness. Even when they describe daylight conditions, it is dark. In addition, the author successfully invokes the images from Catholic tradition, and maybe from the deep psyche of the human condition, such that the words he uses cause a darkness beyond even the writing. On top of this, the characters are developed (or not developed) in a similar way. Wow. As a whole, it is almost breath taking, at least to me. The words, images, and emotions work with the reader (at least for myself as a Western Christian reader), combine with the plot to create a masterpiece. No individual part is exceptional, but the entirety is really, really special in it's combinations. I won't go into the plot here, except to say that the descriptions are very well done - you can almost feel the goodness and evil of certain characters. There are some very frank parts of the book (but no prurient details), and I would not recommend it for less than High School age - and maybe not even then. Certainly the themes are pretty mature, and this writing style stays with the impressionable mind.Summary: A very special work of literature, not just writing. Highly recommended.

It was a short book about two former high school friends. They haven't seen each other in years, and haven't spoken for that long. Something happened between the two of them that we don't really find out until later in the book. But these two fit together well; Cole has two children from a previous marriage and Sabrina dotes on them. Cole's son is a little hesitant to get too close to Sabrina, but she slowly breaks down those walls. I wish there was a little more romance in this book, though. I felt like a lot of it was just building their friendship back up, which is obviously important, but then it's not until the very end that things start to heat up between them. I just wish it had happened sooner and we saw a little more romance with them! Overall, good, quick book.Pagesofcomfort.blogspot.com

He completely nails the food shortage and scarcity of the Confederate Army, as well as the overall picture of life in Virginia during the war. Second, sometimes the prose soared to superb heights as he described the natural surroundings. To me, it felt at times, a little Thoreauish. Third, Bennett tells a complete story that holds the readers suspense from the first page to the last. Many first time novelists lose their way in the midst of their story, losing the juice of the original idea. Bennett avoid this pitfall by sliding the main characters in and out of new dangers and challenges without changing the nature or essence of the story. Four, I love the idealized way I can read back into the racial and sexual component of the tale. Even though it is historical, the relationship aspects of it are shockingly contemporary.

The story took place during the civil war, and it's the story of a Confederate sharpshooter, Will Seymour. He got separated from his group of soldiers, and came faced many obstacles before he was reunited with them. I could not put the book down. It was that good!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.

IRRELATIONSHIP: How we use Dysfunctional Relationships to Hide from Intimacy, by Mark B. Borg, Grant H Brenner, Daniel Berry

Review “Irrelationship is an invaluable user’s guide to the care and maintenance of adult relationships. It shines a light on challenges we often choose to ignore—the adoption of roles that limit us, the replaying of damaging patterns formed by our earliest experiences—and offers insightful and concrete advice on how to do the work necessary to build stronger and happier partnerships.”--Carolyn Parkhurst, Author of The Dogs of Babel and The Nobodies Album“Irrelationship crosses the frontier of “self help” into a new area which the authors call “self-other help.” The DREAM Sequence used for recovery from irrelationship is designed for couples to work together and help them reconnect with the wonderful chemistry and emotional connections that initially drew them to one another.”--Diana Kirschner, PhD, Bestselling author of Love in 90 Days“The road to recovery is stated in user-friendly, self-help terms—discover the unrealistic song-and-dance both partners are playing, seek to repair it (by sharing responsibility for the problem), and thereby empowering each other to make changes (alternative ways of thinking and behaving) through a mutuality of experience that permits the expression of love in all its wonderful, vital, unpredictable, even downside forms, as the way to find continued growth and collaboration for both members of the couple.”--Martin Bloom, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of Connecticut

The best part about this book was going through it with my partner. She enjoyed the breakdown of the different areas of a relationships in each chapter and how they were explained. I now follow the three authors on their blog that is on PsychologyToday.com, which is an achievement in its own right. A very impressive book, that will come in handy as life moves along.

36 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Romance with wily fun! By A Customer This is a well-written romance with a bit of fun as you can tell from the info below. In a way, it reminds me of Jayne Krentz's stories for the humor, here and there. But also, it is a wonderful mix from what appears to be a mismatched couple. This was my first book authored by Debbie Macomber. Highly recommend. This is from the book's back cover. (The story is not in first-person form):What do you do when you love him---but love isn't enough? If you're Mary Jo Summerhill, kindergarten teacher, and you're in love with Boston blud blood and political hopeful Evan Dryden, you get out of his life. You do it by lying to him, by telling him you've found someone else. And you break his heart...All because you believed that you didn't belong in his world. All because his mother said you weren't the "right kind of wife."That happened three years ago. Now your parents need legal help--Evan's help--and you go to him. You discover you're as much in love with him as ever. You don't know how he feels, though, and you wonder: Does love ever get a second chance?
