By oldcaman I am trying to catch on my education of the US history - at almost 80 I have some time to do it and it is fascinating. After finishing Ben Franklin's autobiography, I am going back in time to a Quaker William Penn He was 'given' the territory what is now the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania mostly for the serviceshis father provided to an English king.William Penn Jr. appears to be one of mild mannered eccentric English gentlemen who made this country a very decent place, indeed. He died way before Franklin came to Philadelphia and Franklin's opposition to the 'proprietor' had nothing to do with him, possibly with some of his descendents. The author depicts the Indians as friendly and cooperative but, obviously, it did not last forever. On only 100 pages not much detail is given, only the basics. Poor Penn was in and out of English jail quite frequently, mostly for being a member of a strange religious sect but not as strange as the Pilgrims.Religion was very important in England of that era and in the colonies. It is significant that an English king eventually issued an 'act of toleration', one of the first in Europe (although Emperor Joseph of Austria issued also one at about the same time). At this time (2014) religion is almost irrelevant in Europe but it is an important factor in the USA.This book written more than 100 years ago, its copyright expired and is available as a Kindle book for free. Recommended, you cannot go wrong with a free book...Three stars, it is quite OK.

While all the other colonies cheated and made war with the Indians, Penn in his Pennsylvania was honest and made lasting friendships with the Indians. While other slave owners kept their slaves, Penn freed all his slaves in 1701. While others in his position sought wealth and power, Penn sought only to do the most good and create the most freedom for the people, even creating and writing the forerunner of the US Constitution. He alsofounded the city of Philadelphia. A true warrior for freedom and right in the spirit of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, and LIncoln!

This book, in my opinion, is the best introduction to Faulkner possible where the reader has a chance to become accustomed to the sentence structure (to some extent: the longest sentence in The Unvanquished doesn't seem to run for even a page, making this quite simplistic by Faulknerian standards) without having to worry about an overly confused plot. Although there are parts where the reader will have to back up and read a passage over, it is far more straightforward than others of Faulkner's works. This story chronicles the growth of Bayard Sartoris from the child who thinks war is a game (even though it isn't all that far from him) and can't imagine the consequences when he plays his games a little too close to the Yankees (Ambuscade) into a man who, when faced with the tragedy of his father's demise, must make this decision: who lives by the sword shall die by it--is it time to change the Southern tradition of bloodshed? It is also the story of the South as it undergoes its most severe upheaval in its history: the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the effect on its people. In my opinion, the best way to get acquainted with Faulkner is to begin with The Unvanquished. Once you're done with that, I suggest Intruder in the Dust. Be warned, though, that the latter isn't nearly as simple as The Unvanquished and there is a sentence that (if I recall correctly) runs for five or six pages (or more, but I'm not entirely sure). The good thing, at least, is that you can get used to the confusing syntax while the plot is still reasonably clear: what is clearer than a murder mystery and story of racial injustice (which, as the reader will gather from The Unvanquished, is one of the themes with which Faulkner is concerned in almost all his works)? Once you are used to seeing things from a somewhat blurred perspective (and to dealing with that syntax and stream-of-consciousness technique), I suggest moving on to Go Down, Moses (but you REALLY need to look at a McCaslin genealogy first, and to do this you should go to William Faulkner On the Web), and the stories in this book range from fairly simple to truly confusing (The Bear: it is in this story where you will be very glad you read Intruder In the Dust first!). And finally, you're ready for The Sound and the Fury (all of this, of course, is my own opinion about Faulkner; the reader may tackle these books in any order which he or she chooses: BUT DEFINITELY START WITH THE UNVANQUISHED!)

The Sartoris family lives through Faulkner's books. The plot centers on the familiy's personal experiences in the South during the Civil War. History comes alive on the pages of The Unvanquished, and the reader gains a better understanding of the Confederate viewpoint by witnessing the southern struggle to survive the destruction of their homes, families, and way of life. I heartily recommend this book.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The French connection... By John P. Jones III There is a particular "French connection" with this novel, and there is an overall connection between the French people and William Faulkner, and none of the other reviewers have raised this matter. It was the subject of a recent article in "The Guardian," which said that he was the second favorite French author, beating Flaubert, Stendhal, Baudelaire, de Beauvoir, Camus and Celine. Only Marcel Proust was ranked ahead of him. Faulkner spent only a very limited period in France, once during the 20's, and once in 1945 when he worked with the film director, Renoir. Apparently the peasant revolt in the Vendee, led by the clerics, against the forces of the French revolution, resonated with his feelings about the "lost cause" of the South's fight in the American Civil War. For some reason, certainly not evident to me, he entitled the chapter concerning Bayard and Ringo's (who was apparently named after the French victory at Marengo) hunt for Grumby as "Vendee." Furthering some of the inexplicable possible connections on this matter, in Honore de Balzac's great novel on the Vendee revolt, entitled "Les Chouans," the first chapter is "Ambuscade," the same name that Faulkner used for the first chapter in this book. Mere coincidence?Aside from French connections, the style and content in Faulkner's novels continues to dazzle, and "The Unvanquished" is no exception. The chapters are set during the Civil War, starting with the fall of Vicksburg, through the 10 year period of Reconstruction following the war. The setting is the familiar, to Faulkner readers, Yoknapatawpha County, in northwestern Mississippi. Although the occupation of the county by Union forces is depicted in the novel, and there are numerous killings in the book, there is not a single incident of a Northern or Southern soldier being killed there by the opposite side. (of course, "far off" deaths, such as Drusilla's fiancée at Shiloh are noted). There are numerous memorable scenes, from the night marching of recently freed black slaves to the "Jordan River,"( that borders of Magic Realism) to the generosity of a Union officer who played along with Granny's ruse, to the courage, and ultimate submission of Drusilla, who was forced back into her pre-war role by her female contemporaries, a la "Rosie the Riveter" after the Second World War.The characterization of black-white relations in Faulkner novels has been, I'm sure, the subject of several PhD dissertations. While I found the relationship of Ringo and Bayard 10 years after the war somewhat implausible, much is redeemed by the actions of Loosh during the conflict. Faulkner no doubt digested the folk tales involving the South's continued defiance of the North, and this was reflected in the somewhat embroidered tale of the unlikely alliance of Ringo and Granny fooling those Union officers. What continues to astonish about Faulkner are the sometimes vertiginous twist and turns, such as the interaction between Bayard and Drusilla in "An Odor of Verbena," and the quick suspense involving the question of whether to tell his father, the indomitable Col. Sartoris, who has already begun to find solace in brandy.Other reviewers say this novel is an excellent introduction to Faulkner, since it is more "straightforward," others say no. I'm divided on the question. I believe it is as good as any of the others, and has numerous unexplained complexities. It is a joy to read, and deserves the full 5-stars, as do all his others. Finally, a thought for the present: Col. Sartoris, at times a rigid man of the past, viewing the world through a certain structure, had numerous books on his shelf, including Napoleon's "Maxims," and rather surprisingly, the Koran!

For the addicted, pregnant, and poor women living in daily-rent hotels in San Francisco's Mission district, life is marked by battles against drug cravings, housing debt, and potential violence. In this stunning ethnography Kelly Ray Knight presents these women in all their complex humanity and asks what kinds of futures are possible for them given their seemingly hopeless situation. During her four years of fieldwork Knight documented women’s struggles as they traveled from the street to the clinic, jail, and family court, and back to the hotels. She approaches addicted pregnancy as an everyday phenomenon in these women's lives and describes how they must navigate the tension between pregnancy's demands to stay clean and the pull of addiction and poverty toward drug use and sex work. By creating the space for addicted women's own narratives and examining addicted pregnancy from medical, policy, and social science perspectives, Knight forces us to confront and reconsider the ways we think about addiction, trauma, health, criminality, and responsibility.

addicted.pregnant.poor (Critical Global Health: Evidence, Efficacy, Ethnography), by Kelly Ray Knight

Review "Kelly Ray Knight has the courage to expose eloquently and ethnographically one of the most painful public secrets of addiction and urban poverty (and gentrification) that medicine, public health, science, and society cannot solve. What this book documents ethnographically and explores theoretically must be confronted in all its impossible complexity and violence."  (Philippe Bourgois, coauthor of Righteous Dopefiend)"Kelly Ray Knight writes with compassion and self-reflection, and one of her great strengths is the way she gracefully renders her own doubts and self-ironies into the stories she collects from pregnant addicts, making both her subjects and herself more 'real' and complicated. addicted.pregnant.poor brings the experience of pregnant drug addicts close to the reader, giving them human voices, faces, and fears. Knight's plunge into the dangerous, barely survivable world these women inhabit is tremendously compelling." (Rayna Rapp, author of Testing Women, Testing the Fetus: The Social Impact of Amniocentesis in America)"The Mission District is very much a part of this narrative. Knight understands that individual women’s stories do not exist in a vacuum within the city; they speak volumes about the gentrification to the area unhinted-at in the book’s title, the new people moving in, the private 'Google buses' that shuttle tech workers to their well-paid jobs. ... This is a sobering, poignant ethnography that affords dignity to women whose lives are stripped of it by a system that has let them down." (Lisa McKenzie Times Higher Education 2015-10-01)"Addicted.pregnant.poor is a poignant read. Knight describes a range of conflicting emotions elicited throughout the course of her research. She depicts the ambivalent feelings of the array of professionals included in the study; her book evokes similar responses in the reader. Throughout the book, Knight poses reflexive questions for which there are no clear answers. While we see the perspective of pregnant addicts, as well as of those whose life’s work is to aid or manage them, the reader is left confounded regarding viable solutions.Yet, with this thorough treatment of the issues faced by addicted pregnant women and their service providers, there is now more contextualized information for professionals and policy-makers to work with. This book is a valuable resource for all stakeholders and should be a staple for everyone involved in work with pregnant addicts."  (Kalynn Amundson Journal of Children and Poverty 2016-01-01)"Addicted.pregnant.poor is the sort of ethnography you start reading and don’t put down again until it’s finished. ... an honest and often harrowing account of women who have quite literally fallen through the cracks." (Kirsten Bell Somatosphere 2016-02-25)"Knight’s capacity for storytelling is a significant strength of this book. Through a combination of ethno-photography and strategic integration of strikingly vivid verbatim field notes, she adds colorful context to her analysis. The field notes really allow the women’s voices to be heard in a way that enables the reader to vicariously experience the pain of child loss, eviction from the daily rent hotel rooms, public benefit denial, arrests, and the literal highs and lows of cyclical drug use. ... This book clearly highlights the discrepancies between intent and impact so that social workers, as well as other professionals, can reflect on where they have been going wrong and identify new approaches for intervention with women at risk for addiction, poverty, and the lack of good health care when pregnant."  (Janaé E. Bonsu Affilia 2016-03-15)"Knight  has succeeded in focusing an ethnographic lens on a rarely studied group of people: drug-using women who are pregnant and living in daily rent hotels. . . .The author makes excellent use of powerful photos of life in the hotels, wisely not including pictures of the women themselves. Highly recommended. All academic levels/libraries." (I. Glasser Choice 2016-04-01)

About the Author Kelly Ray Knight is Assistant Professor of Anthropology, History, and Social Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Game of Mirrors (Inspector Montalbano), by Andrea Camilleri

Review Praise for Andrea Camilleri and the Montalbano Series: “Camilleri’s Inspector Montalbano mysteries might sell like hotcakes in Europe, but these world-weary crime stories were unknown here until the oversight was corrected (in Stephen Sartarelli’s salty translation) by the welcome publication of The Shape of Water…This savagely funny police procedural…prove[s] that sardonic laughter is a sound that translates ever so smoothly into English.”—The New York Times Book Review  “Hailing from the land of Umberto Eco and La Casa Nostra, Montalbano can discuss a pointy-headed book like Western Attitudes Toward Death as unflinchingly as he can pore over crime-scene snuff photos. He throws together an extemporaneous lunch of shrimp with lemon wedges and oil as gracefully as he dodges advances from attractive women.”—Los Angeles Times “[Camilleri’s mysteries] offer quirky characters, crisp dialogue, bright storytelling—and Salvo Montalbano, one of the most engaging protagonists in detective fiction…Montalbano is a delightful creation, an honest man on Siciliy’s mean streets.”—USA Today “Camilleri is as crafty and charming a writer as his protagonist is an investigator.”—The Washington Post Book World  “Like Mike Hammer or Sam Spade, Montalbano is the kind of guy who can’t stay out of trouble…Still, deftly and lovingly translated by Stephen Sartarelli, Camilleri makes it abundantly clear that under the gruff, sardonic exterior our inspector has a heart of gold, and that any outburst, fumbles, or threats are made only in the name of pursuing truth.”—The Nation “Camilleri can do a character’s whole backstory in half a paragraph.”—The New Yorker  “Wit and delicacy and the fast-cut timing of farce play across the surface…but what keeps it from frothing into mere intellectual charm is the persistent, often sexually bemused Montalbano, moving with ease along zigzags created for him, teasing out threads of discrepancy that unravel the whole.”—Houston Chronicle “Sublime and darkly humorous…Camilleri balances his hero’s personal and professional challenges perfectly and leaves the reader eager for more.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “In Sicily, where people do things as they please, Inspector Salvo Montalbano is a bona fide folk hero.”—The New York Times Book Review  “The books are full of sharp, precise characterizations and with subplots that make Montalbano endearingly human…Like the antipasti that Montalbano contentedly consumes, the stories are light and easily consumed, leaving one eager for the next course.”—New York Journal of Books  “The reading of these little gems is fast and fun every step of the way.”—The New York Sun

Camilleri is running out of steam for his best character By jwalcott One of the more recent Montalbano Italian television episodes was based on this book; while I was a little disappointed that I knew the outcome, I still enjoyed reading the narrative. I agree with a prior review that this most recent creation lacks some of the spark and fire of the earlier books. In the last five or six the recurring theme of "aging" has been an undertone. It definitely gives the reader pause, and perhaps signals that Camilleri, who is quite elderly himself, is running out of ideas or the energy to do more than fill out the formula. However, I will be sad to see the end of the Montalbano canon.

This is an installment in Camilleri's Best Selling Detective Montalbano series. I love this series as many of you may already know. Although originally written in Italian, the books have been excellently translated by Stephen Sartarelli to English. Montalbano is a police Inspector in Sicily. During the series, he has to deal with his own mixed bag a squad which includes an inveterate womanizer, a true protégé, an office clown who doubles as the computer expert, and a coroner who never talks to Montalbano without an argument. All of whom can be a plus or a minus at any given time. On top of the regular murders and mysteries that come his way, Montalbano must two step his way between the two ruling mafia clans on the island. He does this with humor and smarts and manages to side step the wrath of both. "Game of Mirrors" is a Romeo and Juliet story with their parents being opposing drug clans. The clans try to keep Montalbano from discovering the truth at every turn as they try to manipulate the couple.Montalbano rarely uses a gun, which I appreciate. I enjoy reading about him working out the problems that come in front of him. I rarely see the answers before they're revealed, which I frequently do in other books. (I guessed "Gone Girl" in the first few pages.) I also appreciate Camilleri's attention to the side characters. They make the books breathe. I highly recommend the entire series. In case you haven't heard me talk about this series before, there are about 27 cds available made for Italian television. They are faithfully recreated from the books. At 110 minute with no commercials, each is more like a movie than an America 40 minute television episode. They are in Italian, but the subtitles are large and easy to read even on a small television. It's very easy to follow the action. Watch a couple episodes or read a couple books. You may become as hooked as I am.

A Game But Just That By propertius this book will not disappoint the fans of Camillieri but it will not delight them as much as others in this series. The plot is pure Montalbano with fiendishly seemingly unconnected events, the bombings of empty warehouses, the deaths of two lovers, the blackmailing of Montalbano among other activities. There can be no doubt that the action holds your attention and it moves at a lightning pace. However the problem is that there is little of the flavor and atmosphere of the past novels. The characters are simply action figures even with the ever mumble mouth Cat. Livia makes a few sporadic calls and peraps Camillieri does not know what to do with that relationship. The only time he hints at his past style is with he way that handles Montalbano's housekeeper and her co-worker who has a scene worth paying attention to. Even Montalbano's famous culinary quests seem a little to trite and formulaic. It is for that reason that it warrants only four stars and if you have not read his other books do not start with this one.

Post-coup Thailand is the setting as high tech competes with traditional power in a battle for hearts and minds. It is a noir landscape where Calvino finds himself ambushed as casualties from this battle leave behind a mystery or two. Crackdown, by Christopher G. Moore

Review "One reason that the Vinnie Calvino series is so popular is that the characters are described in such detail that the reader can almost 'see' them, and then by placing these characters in real life places ... it all adds to the realism. After all the previous Calvino novels I have read, I can visualize Calvino, scars and all. He is a PI who bleeds, physically and emotionally."--Pattaya Mail"Christopher G. Moore's freewheeling intelligence roams over the manifold aspects of modern life, from the 2014 coup to high-tech crime surveillance, map-making, and radical street art. The sum total infuses his latest novel, Crackdown, with a richer palette of colors than the endless black and grainy bleakness of so many other noir tales."--Jim Algie, Bangkok 101"Crackdown is a superb novel and a wonderful read."--The Life Style Detective"This carefully crafted politically-aware crime novel ... set in Bangkok during post-coup military rule ... is a book of symbols. [Crackdown] is a book of dusty maps and edgy political graffiti. A book of warnings, predictions; a well plotted social document."--James Newman, Author of the Joe Dylan Private Investigator Noir Crime Series

I see that here I am not in the majority in the reviews of Crackdown, but fear not, I will be there for the next one and the next one after that. It is my opinion and my review that Crackdown, satisfying as it is in many respects, is the most convoluted Calvino story yet. It's all over the place. No wonder maps played such a big part in it. The reader can get lost. The novel is invaluable as a look at post-coup Thailand. But I would vote for some serious editing. So, no, I am not starting my own coup here, I just want to encourage the author to write a tighter novel the next time. Thanks for listening.Note to reader: I slept on this review and considered all of the other reviews. This caused me to go up a star to 4 as his post-coup info is really good. Plus, I just like Vinnie!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Moore Doesn't Back Down - Calvino Not Slowing Down By California Guy I liken reading a Christopher G. Moore novel to being outdoors, alone, on a nice day as you eat a delicious apple. Some bites snap off perfectly, with great pitch, and meet all your expectations. Once in awhile you spot an imaginary worm-hole that makes you pause. But the experience, overall, remains a satisfying one, especially when you get to the core of the story. Sentence by sentence I enjoyed CRACKDOWN, I read many of them twice.CRACKDOWN is set in post coup Thailand and the insights Moore provides give the reader either an education or affirmation as to what they might know or think they know about life, illusions (and politics) in the Kingdom with a capital K. Moore shines a light on the plentiful black matter found in Bangkok with his signature noir style. CRACKDOWN is the 15th Vincent Calvino novel written by Moore, featuring the disbarred New York lawyer turned Bangkok P.I. and previously troubled shooter. The book may be considered the third in a trilogy starting with MISSING IN RANGOON and following THE MARRIAGE TREE. Readers who enjoyed one or both of those novels will find added pleasures in CRACKDOWN.Moore takes you on a field trip complete with binoculars. Among the things you’ll see: University political dissidents using Banksy style art to get their message across, the life of an honorable Khmer tattoo artist, an unfinished 9 story condo that transforms itself into its dual role of slum dwelling and tourist attraction with small time thugs on top and big fish aplenty in the basement, Calvino’s white robe wearing, sage advice giving guru, and the behind the scenes attitude adjustment centers where happiness is born. Plus you get to know the lifestyles of high ranking policemen and their HiSo BMW driving wives. There’re more than a few dead bodies laying or floating around to remind you where you are and propel the mystery forward.Technology plays a big role as does information gathering and high level computer science. You also get a retro 1990 re-creation of a computer-less Calvino office complete with his bun-hair wearing, saucy secretary Ratana thrown into the mix, just for a bit of nostalgia and contrast. For meet-ups with his disgruntled sidekick McPhail there's a hamburger serving black van restaurant with the appetizing name of Road Kill along with an assortment of old Asia hands lamenting about the good old days, which have passed them by. Discussions among the veteran expats include the effects of the internet on the nightlife scene and the creative ways the Chinese use their black vans in Asia. Literary references are wide ranging including, Graham Greene, Joseph Heller, Lucian Freud, George Orwell and Henry Miller. My niggle with the book it is that Moore doesn’t give us enough of Dr. Marley Solberg, the brilliant mathematician and algorithm specialist whom we last saw rocking away with Calvino in the stateroom of a fancy yacht in The Marriage Tree. Her presence is felt but she’s kept off the meandering map most of the time as Calvino navigates this journey solo. Keeping track of all the players involved in the Rohingya trafficking aspects of the novel proved trying for me, at times. It’s a novel Moore would not have written and probably could not have written twenty years ago. All in all I’m glad Vinnie lives to see another sunrise. There are more than enough messages to decipher; it all depends on how you want to unwrap the package.

Newman Latest in the Vincent Calvino series this carefully crafted politically-aware crime novel is set in Bangkok during post-coup military rule. Christopher Moore, having delivered fifteen outings in the Vincent Calvino crime series, has perfected the formula and delivers with unflinching certainty each and every time. If Noir fiction is an attempt to bring order to chaos then Clavino's Bangkok is the ideal location to set crime novels.Ballard is a rich businessman compromised by high class hooker cum conceptual artist Christina Tangier. If points were to be awarded for character names this is a clear ten out of ten. Tangier finds fame by photographing rich customers (naked with teddy bear) and exhibiting the shots as modern art instillations.Calvino's client Osborne is a man who shoots henchmen when not examining the potency of his sperm under a high-powered microscope. Osborne hires Calvino to trail his much younger girlfriend Fah who it turns out is studying politics and inventing political graffiti rather than falling for a younger man as first suspected. Quite which is worse Osborne isn’t sure. One of these characters takes the big sleep in the long river and things become dark.Crackdown, for this reader, is a book of symbols. This is a book of dusty maps and edgy political graffiti. A book of warnings, predictions; a well plotted social document. Books set in countries experiencing enormous social change should perhaps be authored by those such as Moore who realize that often truth can only be heard in fiction.Crackdown is my favorite in the series so far.

Usually it's other people's lives that are a mess. But when successful divorce lawyer JB's best friend dies, he finds his own world in turmoil. Suddenly, he must reexamine years of choices -- and one big secret. Card Game follows JB and his band of poker playing brothers from their first game in a 1970's suburban Maryland basement through their most memorable good and bad bets and wins and losses, as the men gather at a funeral to reflect on everything that they've faced together, and, even more importantly, all that they have not. Card Game brings to life an era of prank phone calls and fake IDs, unsupervised boys' nights out, and moments of head-shaking depravity, even as it tells the story of what happens when these boys grow up. A funny, poignant, and at times painful meditation on death, lifelong friendships, and honesty, Card Game is as irreverent as it is heartfelt. About the Author David Bulitt was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. A father of four and a divorce lawyer for more than twenty-five years, he lives in Olney, Maryland, with his wife, Julie, their youngest daughter, and two dogs. He still plays cards with his buddies every month.

Review  From: Life and The Single Parent Magazine, April, 2016BOOK REVIEW - CARD GAMEIt is always a challenge to review an author's first novel. Often, this initial attempt at putting pen to paper heralds not just a beginning but also possibly an end to a literary career. After reading David Bulitt's CARD GAME, it is obvious that this author has a gift. I look forward to making all of his work part of my library.CARD GAME chronicles the lives of a closely-knit group of poker playing friends. Close friends that regularly get together not only to play cards but also to share experiences as they grow from boys into men. From a game that starts while attending a suburban Maryland high school, the route takes the reader on a more than thirty-year journey. Along the way, we get a close and sometimes poignant look at a few sexual experiences, pranks, career and family development. Eventually, the reader is made to feel a part of the group as the boys are forced to face the profound effects caused by the unexpected death of one of the group.Successful authors have different interest producing talents- mystery, romance, and violence, to name a few. Bulitt in CARD GAME has found a way to make you laugh, to make you cry, and most of all to make you anxious to read whatever next comes from his talented pen. ●lifeandthesingleparent.com

The story telling was amazing and I could relate to all the characters. It seemed that most of them had similar qualities as some of the guys I hung around with. At times the book was laugh out loud funny and at other times it was very sad and brutally honest. I especially liked, and could relate to, the stories of JB and his many trips with the Boys. The card game was not always exciting but it was the glue that held this interesting group together in good times and especially in bad. The book was not only entertaining and an easy read, but I guarantee you will experience the full range of emotions before you finish. I look forward to more books in the future from my new favorite author.

Each character is developed in such away that you are made to feel that you are a part of the card game-you are one of the guys or ladies. You laugh and cry as the words are read. What an unbelievable story line!!! I could not put the book down. I cannot wait to see the next book that David Bulitt publishes.

By Nadia McIlhany I got this book a while ago because it was written by a high school classmate and I like to support people with whom I have some connection. I figured this would be a good vacation at the beach read. And I was right. I thoroughly enjoyed the story - the flash backs to places I knew while growing up - the true friendships that came out in the story telling - the ups and downs that make life real. I'm looking forward to David's next book.

The Ice Chorus, by Sarah Stonich

From Publishers Weekly Here's an Irish-style yarn: a woman of many nicknames meets an artist "considered ugly by most," has a paint-splattered affair with him and then finds comfort in exile at an unhandsome ocean house in Ireland. Stonich (These Granite Islands) pays homage to the Irish storytelling tradition in this sophisticated and fully realized tale of love and forgiveness. Lise is an amateur documentary filmmaker from Canada who loses herself in other people's stories. Having fled to Ireland after her affair ended her marriage and earned her the resentment of her 17-year-old son, Lise documents the stories of the inhabitants of the place where she lives, far from "postcard Ireland, just a small town at low tide." Here she waits for the artist, Charlie, to come to her and rekindle the love they discovered during their whirlwind affair on a trip to Mexico. Amid all this storytelling, Lise allows memories of her philandering father, who died young, to permeate her consciousness. The love story between Lise and Charlie, told in flashbacks, is rose-tinted, but provides a welcome respite from the stark realism of Lise's adjustment to rural Ireland. Midlife renewal and the power of art to transform life are celebrated in this bittersweet tale. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist In this tender, elegantly told love story, Liselle flees her native Toronto for a small village on the coast of Ireland. As she slowly incorporates herself into the lives of the villagers, Liselle re-creates the circumstances surrounding the bitter breakup of her 18-year marriage. When she accompanied her workaholic husband on an archaeological dig in Mexico, she met Charlie, a gifted painter. Their intense affair prompts her realization of how she has avoided intimacy ever since she found her father dead and discovered that he had led a double life during her teen years. Although she is now aware of the many ways she has settled for less in her life and marriage, she is slow to act. Then Charlie mounts an art exhibit consisting of eight shockingly intimate portraits of her, forcing her to make a decision. Stonich effortlessly conjures multiple vivid settings and uncommonly interesting characters even as she moves seamlessly between the past and the present. A subtle, lovely evocation of the transforming power of love. Joanne WilkinsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

A Lovely Slip of A Novel By Mark Munger As a Minnesota author (Suomalaiset: People of the Marsh; Cloquet River Press, 2004; ISBN 0972005064) who enjoys quality literary fiction, I would recommend this latest offering from another Minnesota writer. The tale is tightly woven, psychologically filling, and well drawn. Lise, the protagonist, is someone that you'll want to walk the misty beaches of Ireland's Atlantic Coast with, share a spot of tea with, and ultimately, try to understand. Surrounded by a likeable and elegently crafted supporting cast, the book isn't one that will keep you up at nights pondering "who done it". But it will make you step back and take stock of what you have, who you are, and where you came from. A wonderfully taut and brisk read.

Banks The Ice Chorus is a retelling of events that shaped the life of the main character Liselle. We find her in Ireland as she tries to rebuild her life. Through her memories and conversations we find out the results of many of her life's decisions. She has fallen in love with another man and her marriage is in shambles. Her seventeen-year-old son communicates with her but we are certain that this relationship is damaged as well. With no other recourse perceived she travels to Ireland and awaits Charlie, the passionate artist who taught her to enjoy life and celebrate the beauty that she does not see for herself. As she rediscovers herself she rediscovers her deceased father's past and the secrets that were taken to the grave only to be rediscovered by Liselle. We live life through her eyes and witness vibrant flashbacks and snippets of conversation that often lead us into a dance with her emotions. We can see how and why she has changed and now we will find out where she will go from this point forward. This book can be deemed poetic storytelling or even a journal of sorts. It is told in a way that will inspire you to live the moment and paint what you have seen. There are so many ideas and emotions that make up this "spiritual paint" but at the conclusion you can see that Liselle has grown even more than she could have imagined as she discovers the truth.Reviewed by Tyrone Vincent Banks of Betsie's Literary Page.

This volume, while it is complete in itself, is also the first of a trilogy, the scope of which is suggested in the prologue. The story of scientific discovery has its own epic unity—a unity of purpose and endeavour—the single torch passing from hand to hand through the centuries; and the great moments of science when, after long labour, the pioneers saw their accumulated facts falling into a significant order—sometimes in the form of a law that revolutionised the whole world of thought—have an intense human interest, and belong essentially to the creative imagination of poetry. It is with these moments that my poem is chiefly concerned, not with any impossible attempt to cover the whole field or to make a new poetic system, after the Lucretian model, out of modern science.

Blokker In its day this was an ambitious attempt at an epic poem, depicting the growth of astronomy in the face of great skepticism and outright hostility, through the careers of key figures in the birth of that science. The material is interesting and revealing, approaching each individual in turn with an intensely personal point of view. However, for today's reader the material is not as exciting as it must have been when Noyes wrote this, in the days before World War One. As biography, it is too poetic; as poetry, it is too biographical. Still, an interesting read.

Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps, and Time LinesFrom Rose Publishing

Review Especially for the visual learner, this book is a real treat. The night I brought my copy home, my wife and I sat down with it and we hardly stopped turning the pages. We were repeatedly amazed at the wide variety of information. From full-color maps of Bible lands, to summaries of every book in the Bible, to lists of key people and events, including an outline of Jesus' life and information about each of the disciples, to theological beliefs across the religious spectrum, this volume is a treasure of teaching aids. --Dr. Gary Habermas, Liberty UniversityIf I could give only two books to a new Christian, one would be the Bible and the other would be this book. --Dr. Ed Hindson (President of World Prophetic Ministry and pastor on the 'The King is Coming' telecast)Rose Publishing has produced one of the finest books I have ever seen. Every aspect of the charts, maps and time lines leaps off the page with spectacular color, incredible accuracy and intricate detail. Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps and Time Lines is a must for every pastor and teacher who wants to clearly present the truths of the Bible.' --Dr. Jerry Falwell, Founder of Liberty University

Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps, and Time Lines is a better value By Research Fanatic I own and use the Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps, and Time Lines and the Holman Book of Biblical Charts, Maps, and Reconstructions. I recommend both, but if you must choose, go with the Rose Book. Why?1. The Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps, and Time Lines is reproducible. The Holman book is not, according to the copyright page on each book.2. Both books are the same size and number of pages and have much of the same content (see details below). But the Rose book is more attractive with better color, photos, charts, illustrations, and overall graphic design.3. I have communicated with the editors at both companies. Holman has never updated their book since the original publication date in 1993, therefore typos and errors still exist. Rose updates their book annually if needed. What the Rose book has that Holman does not (this in not an exhaustive list, but these are the important things to me as a teacher):1. Better and longer Bible time line with hundred more facts. There is a side-by-side comparison with events in world history.2. Better and longer Christian history time line with hundreds more facts.3. Then and Now Bible maps, showing both a color Bible map and red lines to show where modern-day cities and countries are.4. Stunning illustrations of the tabernacle, temple, ark of the covenant, Noah's ark. Holman has nice illustrations, but not quite as powerful.5. More information in the timeline on the history and reliability of the Bible. Gives more information on the Tyndale, Wycliffe, Geneva, King James and other early Bibles.6. Has information about the many Bible translations since 1993.7. Longer and more complete side-by-side comparison of 12 Christian denominations and 18 world religions and cults.8. Complete descriptions of the feasts and holidays of the Bible and their foreshadowing and symbolism of Jesus Christ.9. Genealogy of Jesus Christ: the family tree of Jesus Christ on one page.10. Armor of God11. Fruit of the Spirit and 1 Corinthians 13 (the love chapter)12. Overview of each book of the Bible with writer, theme, key verse, to whom written, and date.13. Statue in the Book of Daniel. The four kingdoms listed in Daniel 2.14. Cycle of disobedience in the Book of Judges.15. 100 archaeological finds that support the reliability of the Bible.16. Seven churches of the Revelation.Holman has these key advantages over Rose's book (there are other things, but not as important overall):1. One more map than Rose, but the Holman maps have more detail. Neither book has the detail of another Holman product, the Holman Bible Atlas: A Complete Guide to the Expansive Geography of Biblical History (Broadman & Holman Reference), which is always on my bookshelf.2. 52-week Bible reading plan3. A chart showing ancient numbering systems and the Apocrypha.4. A comparison chart of the books of the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint, and the Roman Catholic Old Testament books.5. Detailed family tree of King David and King Herod (but not of one on Jesus).6. A harmony of the Gospels7. Jewish sectsBoth books have all of the basics:1. Weights and measures from Bible times2. Miracles and parables of Jesus3. Key Rulers of Israel, Judah, Assyria, Babylonia, Persia, Greece, and Rome4. Names of God; Names of Jesus5. Jewish calendar6. Prophets and their message7. Ten Commandments8. Disciples of Jesus9. Paul's Journeys and teachings10. Comparison of views of the millennium and end timesThe Rose book is a little more expensive, but frankly I use it more and rarely refer to the Holman book anymore.

Marold The `Holman Book of Biblical Charts, Maps, and Reconstructions' and the `Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps & Timelines' are very similar compilations of an enormous collection of just what their titles state, charts, maps, timelines, and archaeological reconstructions of Bible era buildings. Aside from the titles, the two books have several other things in common. First, both are bound with a wire spine, which allows each and every page to lie perfectly flat on a photocopier bed. Having tried to copy maps from a quarto sized book where pages were sewn into signatures, I can assure you this is an enormous advantage if you plan to use the pages to construct handouts or slides for a Bible study course. I have also photocopied slides from both books onto transparencies, and the effort was totally painless, with great results, after a little testing to be sure the page was positioned correctly. And, of course, this is exactly the purpose for which these books were published. Both are issued by publishing houses who specialize in material for Bible study classes, especially for classes oriented to young adults. And, I acquired both books to provide just that material, except for an adult Bible study class. My first interest with the books was to obtain good maps of Palestine in the time of the New Testament, the travels of the Apostles, AND, maps of both the Roman Empire at the time of Augustus and the extent of Alexander the Great's conquests, since this is highly relevant to the spread of Greek language and learning just before the time of Jesus. For the purpose of these maps, I assure you as a map afficionato from way back that the Holman maps are far superior to the Rose maps. Holman has both the Roman and Alexandrean maps I wanted, and the more familiar maps of the Holy Land and the travels of the Apostles are much more clearly done, with far better details. They simply look like high quality maps, while the Rose maps have a `dumbed down' look to them. The only problem I found with the Holman maps was that Antioch was missing from the map of the Roman Empire, odd because Antioch was the third largest city after Rome and one other city. The only plus with the Rose maps is that they give maps of the modern Middle East to contrast with the ancient world. I also like Holman's `reconstruction' pictures, especially those of the temple in Jerusalem.Regarding all other material, I give a slight edge to Rose, especially for the excellent large charts of historical timelines. One thing you must know about the Rose book is that virtually all the material in this book is also available in several other forms, as posters or classroom style maps. I point this out because if you have the means to transfer the pages to either transparencies or graphical computer files you can then project with an overhead projector, you have no need to buy the other material. For a young audience, most of the materials in both books are good outlines for study, especially as supplements to standard curricula. For adults, where the interest is more scholarly, one is likely to find the material a bit light, but this initial impression may be misleading. There is a lot of `fluff', such as the 100 Well-Known Old Testament Events' in Rose. One may think this is useful for finding stuff, but I looked for the reference to the story where Solomon was confronted with two mothers in a dispute over custody of a child, and I couldn't find it. On the other hand, the summaries in both books of the books of the Bible are very useful in selecting material for a course of study. If one wishes, for example, to study one of the prophets, which one or which ones are best? Both books also have a lot of interesting material on the world's denominations, both Christian and otherwise. If funds permit, you will probably want both, as each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. And, both publishers fully permit copying for educational purposes, which is what these books are all about.

It has very nice pictures of different cities and sights of the Bible along with amazing timelines from kings to events throughout biblical times. The Maps are colorful and use various images for the reader so you can visualize different events and landmarks. So many tools in this small resource can't list them all. Great reference book for any student or teacher of the Word.
