Porteous Rejected is an anthology with a simple straight forward theme, every single story within its pages has been rejected by another publisher for whatever reason. Because of this there is no specific genre or theme within the gathered stories, which range from fantasy, urban fantasy, horrors, sci-fi, bizarro and others. It is an interesting premise for an anthology, a theme outside of the actual stories themselves that has more to do with the process of publishing rather than reading. But what makes this so interesting is that unlike most other anthologies (I personally have read about three dozen in my lifetime) is before you even begin reading the first page, the anthology makes you ask a question. Why were these stories rejected in the first place? While the editor of the anthology, Brian Woods does mention several general reasons why a story may be rejected, no specific reasons are given to why any specific story was rejected. Admittedly apart of me thinks this book would have benefited slightly if each story ended with an explanation as to why they were rejected. Then again, one of the things I liked the most about this anthology, was trying to find an answer to just such a question. After reading each story, I stopped and thought about the answer. Unsurprisingly some of the conclusions were the clear cut; some stories just weren’t very good. Then again like all anthologies I can’t remember a single one that I have read where I thought each story was brilliant. What was actually far more interesting were the other conclusions I came to. For example ‘The Redness at the Edge of the Sore’ I actually thought this was a good story, but I came to the conclusion that it would have benefited immensely if the authors had just flat out said what the main character’s occupation was. Another story, ‘Lewis and the Brain Tumor’ was well written, but it lacked a satisfying ending. Then you have stories like ‘Threefold’ that really feel more like the beginning chapter of a novel as opposed to a short story. But the best ones, were the enigmas, the clear standouts that I couldn’t really come to any conclusion as to why they were rejected. ‘A Simple Device’ was my personal favorite of the bunch, a fine example of what a good short story should be, simple, to the point but with an interesting plot twist at the end. I also really enjoyed ‘The Pimple on Silverman’s Ass.’ Although I am guessing it got rejected because of its sheer strangeness.Beyond the stories themselves what I found intriguing, is how some of more slice of life styled stories seem to have been plucked right out of the seventies or eighties, (admittedly that is an assumption on my behalf) still they were certainly an interesting peak into the past.Feeding into this point is something else I found interesting. Out of all the authors I was only really familiar with one of them in terms of their writings, Walter Rhein. I thoroughly enjoyed his books the Bone Sword and the Reader of Acheron. So to me personally it was fascinating to read ‘The Promise of Ale’ as I could see touches of his later works in it but in a rougher form. It was like being able to see the prototype for the fuel injected engine, before it was perfected and was definitely a highlight for me reading this anthology. That’s not to say ‘The Promise of Ale’ was bad, it just wasn't as good as his more recent short stories. I think if you are a fan of any of these authors’ novels, I think like me you will get a kick out of reading their earlier/previously-unpublished works. It is difficult to judge this anthology the way I would normally judge an anthology, because as I stated earlier this one asks the reader the same question for each story represented. Because of this the theme is grander than any of the individual stories, but I actually feel that is its biggest strength. It is an intriguing insight to the process of publishing, but done in a way that isn’t boring or stale. Which makes it a rather quite unique reading experience and that is always a plus.So the reason why I have given it four stars is I found it intriguing, insightful, thought provoking and above all else entertaining and that’s exactly what any piece of fictional literature should do. I recommend this book so you can try and find the answers to the question yourself, chances are not only will you enjoy doing so but also you will probably come to different conclusions than I did and again that’s what makes, Rejected such a unique anthology.

All are entertaining to some degree, even the weak ones, since the ideas for those are generally better than the execution. I thought the entries by Gwen Veazey and Rose Blackthorn were among the best included. The book as a whole could have used a better proofing and copy edit.

This shouldn't imply that they are not high quality. I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology and the variety of genres, and would definitely recommend it!

U.R. Bowie DISAMBIGUATIONS: THREE NOVELLAS ON RUSSIAN THEMES U.R. Bowie holds a Ph.D. in Russian literature. The three tales included here are written in English, but make no mistake: they are firmly in the tradition of Russian literature. In fact, the great Nikolai Gogol, with what the critic Mirsky once called “his volcano of imaginative creativeness,” blows through all three works, both in body and spirit. The first novella, "Exhumation," features Gogol in the flesh (and then out of it). Beginning with scenes from the writer’s life in the nineteenth century, it goes on to describe the macabre little festivities on the summer day in 1931 that Nikolai Gogol, along with some of his closest friends, was dug up at the Danilov Monastery in Moscow. When they opened the coffin they discovered that the skull was missing. Nikolai Gogol’s head had been stolen. The second novella, "Disambiguation," is set in the United States, but the theme, once more, is Gogolian in its skewed intricacy. A man who may or may not be insane, who may or may not be Lee Harvey Oswald (still alive fifty years later) appears on a Philadelphia talk show, where he discusses the ambiguations and disambiguations of the spy world, and of the Russian mind— and, by extension, the labyrinthine thing that is anyone’s life on earth. The longest, and most purely Russian of the three works is the last, "The Leningrad Symphony." Set entirely in the city of St. Petersburg, on one day in October of 1999, it is structured something like Virginia Woolf’s "Mrs. Dalloway." While Shostakovich’s famous Seventh Symphony (The Leningrad) plays in the background score, the reader listens to the music and follows a wide variety of characters about the city: a government official on his way to being murdered in a hit killing, his driver, his secretary, his bodyguard, a twelve-year-old boy skipping school that day, an elderly man who spends all his time researching a painting at the Russian Museum, a scatter-brained pilgrim woman, in town to visit the shrine of St. Petersburg’s most famous holy fool, and a variety of other characters. "The Leningrad Symphony" is a hymn of praise to the resplendent city of St. Petersburg, to its Pushkinian harmonious brilliance and to its Dostoevskian bleakness and sleaze. But, then again, this whole collection sings of that glorious thing that is Russian culture. It even throws in for good measure bits and pieces of the Cyrillic alphabet. While acknowledging the complexity of a thousand bloody years of Russian history, while describing with confidence the Russian propensity to hold two contradictory positions at the same time, U.R. Bowie gives us a totally convincing, and even loving, look at the enigma inside a conundrum inside a puzzle that is Russia and the Russian mindset.

A Delightful, Quirky and Exuberant Treat for Readers By Gen Aris A feast for readers, "Disambiguations" offers wit, intelligence, rich details, quirky characters, and an impressive grasp of Russian literature, arts, history and culture. The author is imaginative, knowledgeable; the echoing, overlapping stories--more importantly, the characters themselves--draw in the reader to lead gracefully to a glorious crescendo. In a novel that looks backward to the 19th century as well as forward to what the 21st might hold in store for the Russian states, Bowie deftly manages the trick of scope, hitting all the right notes to sound out the big picture while letting us hear, and feel, the people at the heart of the interwoven stories. The end is likewise well-handled, in that the reader has everything needed to understand the work and feel satisfied, but is left with adequate "space" in which to contemplate the whole afterward. Did I mention that the book also manages a day-trip through the 60s to revisit Lee Harvey Oswald and the assassination of John F. Kennedy!?As a side note, I'll add that the long, 3rd novella forming this book, "The Leningrad Symphony," reminded me of the film "The Russian Ark" due to the dizzying, wonderfully orchestrated dance through history, culture and the people's lives that both this work and that film share.

Out of Gogol's Overcoat By Mary In my opinion the finest novels are written with literary excellence and at the same time appeal to a wide range of readers, some of whom may not be familiar with the work of Nikolai Gogol or other classics. So I'm happy to report that U.R. Bowie has deftly woven timeless themes of great literature into these novellas while maintaining his exceptional appeal as a storyteller. The title Disambiguations ("to remove ambiguity") is perhaps a bit tongue in cheek. For example, the author says of the title novella, "A man who may or may not be insane, who may or may not be Lee Harvey Oswald (still alive fifty years later) appears on a Philadelphia talk show, where he discusses the ambiguations and disambiguations of the spy world, and of the Russian mind." This book is fun to read and fulfills the literary promise of Gogol himself, of whom later writers said, “We all came out of Gogol’s overcoat.”

His well crafted short stories and novellas challenge the reader to question the purpose of existence and God's role in every man's life.In "Disambiguations", we find a trifecta of Novellas, each featuring a different writing style, but joined by explorations of the modern Russian soul. The collection leads off with "the Exhumation", a piece of historical fiction/fantasy centered on the disinterment of the great Russian humorist Nikolai Gogol. This is followed by "Disambiguations", which I gather (and hope!) is a bit of semi-autobiographical fantasy revolving around .... are you ready for this?..... the John F. Kennedy assassination. Worthy of publication in a mystery magazine, this fast moving and creative gem of a story somehow manages to work the philosophies of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky into its plot. Speaking perhaps for the author, the lead character at one point states: "I don't fit in anywhere, really. But 'really' is not important.....I'm in a kind of fiction, but, simultaneously, I'm writing my own fiction, living my life and writing it."The third and longest story in the collection is "The Leningrad Symphony". A 70 page love/hate postcard from St. Petersburg, it follows a half dozen or so post-soviet Russians as they accidentally explore the city's landmarks and history with the ghosts of Gogol, Dostoyevsky, Czar Alexander, Shostakovich and others figuratively popping up at every turn. This was to me the most Russian of the stories and it left me feeling as if I understood just a little more what it would be like to be a modern day Russian.

Dana is a man of logic and reason, without compromise. That is, he was, until reoccurring dreams begin to haunt him and influence the life changing decisions he makes. How much can he depend on advice given to him by family members who are dead? How can he make sense of the feeling that he is relentlessly being drawn to the Green Mountains of Vermont? And how can he logically explain the connectedness in his life that he sees at every turn? Is his life just a series of coincidences and luck? Or is there something more powerful than that at work? How will he cope, when health issues cause his own body to become his most deadly adversary? And might it be possible that he is on this earth with the primary purpose of finding the one woman that he must be with....the woman he has always been with? This book is just a story told by a man. But reading his story will change the way you think about your life. It will change the way you look at the relationships around you and the relationships you are in. It will give you reason to reflect more thoughtfully on your dreams. And more importantly, it will challenge your beliefs about your own, inevitable death.

WHAT A FINE LINE THAT IS. I KEPT FORGETTING THIS WAS A NOVEL AND SOMETIMES FELT THAT I WAS READING SOMEONE'S PERSONAL DIARY. WHEN I FINISHED THIS BOOK, I THOUGHT ABOUT IT LONG AND HARD. HOW SOMEONE’S SEEMINGLY PERFECT LIFE CAN CHANGE IN AN INSTANT; HOW PEOPLE ADAPT TO THESE CHANGES; AND HOW TOMORROW HOLDS NO PROMISES. THIS IS A STORY IN WHICH ALMOST EVERYONE WILL FIND A SITUATION OR TWO THAT RINGS A FAMILIAR NOTE. WHEN I FINISHED READING THE STORY I HAD THE FEELING OF WANTING TO MEET THE AUTHOR TO DISCUSS DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE BOOK. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

It is an easy read, but also thought provoking. Many of the themes of this book can certainly ring true with any reader. Life, loss and love and how we handle it is what makes this book a page turner. The ideas of the power of how we connect to people, and the power of dreams also play a part in making this book something you will continue to think about long after you have read the last page.

By Brendan Cully The perfect combination of challenging questions to your core and easy read that you don't want to put down. Dana Caldarone masters the art of keeping the reader invested, while balancing the thought provoking nature of this book. While the pages quickly slip by, the intrinsic look at your core beliefs does not. Highly recommend following up with the sequel right after reading it. I waited for it to come out and was in suspense for too long.

After reading Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass for the very first time, Anne Gilchrist immediately composed a letter to the author to express her delight in his poems and to thank him for their publication. From Whitman’s reply was born an epistolary relationship between the two writers, the material of which is contained within this fascinating collection. Sure to appeal to those with an interest in the life of the great Walt Whitman, this compendium offers a unique insight into the personality of the seminal poet and, as such, constitutes a wonderful addition to any Whitman collection. Anne Gilchrist was an English writer most renowned for her connection to the great American poet Walt Whitman. Originally published in 1918, this scarce text is proudly republished here with a new introductory biography of the author.

The Letters of Anne Gilchrist and Walt Whitman, by Thomas Biggs Harned

About the Author Walt Whitman was an American poet and writer born in New York in 1819. Despite his family s financial troubles, Whitman attended school and, after graduating at age eleven, worked in a lawyer s office before becoming a printer s apprentice. Before he had even turned sixteen Whitman began anonymously publishing his poetry at the Long Island Star, where he worked. After leaving the Star, Whitman moved through several jobs including teaching, publishing and typesetting. Eventually, though, Whitman determined to make his living writing poetry, and paid for the first publication of Leaves of Grass himself when he was thirty-seven. At the time of its publication, Leaves of Grass was met with controversy and was criticized for its overtly sexual themes, however, but it has since come to be one of the most important works in early American literature and a product of the transcendentalist movement. Whitman died in 1892 at the age of seventy-two.

By Amanda After working out for years, all the conflicting advice and various methods of training, dieting, and lifestyle seemed like more of a chore than a way to enjoy living healthy and looking good. I love to do research on working out and being healthy, as well as put each idea into use into my training and diet. The author is one of those no BS fitness guys that just get it. The strategies he believes in aren't tedious, tough to follow plans that require following everything to a tee and needing to be perfect. His methods are practical, effective, and most importantly, enjoyable. You don't have to stress over being perfect with your diet and training. Just eat mostly healthy food choices, find a workout routine that works for you, and make healthy living fun. You'll feel the benefits in the way you feel, not just the way you look. Definitely 5-stars worthy.

It provides a wide array of exercises that target your abs in different ways and if you follow the advice you're bound to get sore (in a good way). It's easy to just go to the gym and think, "oh, I'll just train my abs, do some crunches". Well, I've realized that in thinking like that, I'm actually missing out on a lot of growth and strength when it comes to my core strength and stability. Abs are crucial, not only to aestetics but also your overall balance and posture. So I'm making it a habit to follow and implement the routine I've built up using this book.

By Crispy I have been recently getting in shape my workout consisted of sit ups and press ups each morning before going to work although i did feel the benefits i did not get the desired results for good abs. I bought this book to extend my knowledge on the various techniques for building good abs reading the book is very insightful as it goes into so many different methods of crunch and sit ups and also helped me develop a good daily routine from which i am already seeing the results. In addition the book goes into detail of the importance of eating healthy and drinking during exercise can highly recommend.

Prayers for the Living is a novel both grand in its vision and loving in its familiarity. Presented in a series of conversations between grandmother Minnie Bloch and her companions, Alan Cheuse, National Public Radio commentator on All Things Considered, unfolds a layered family portrait of three generations of the Bloch family, whose members are collapsing under everyday burdens and brutal betrayals. Her son Manny is a renowned, almost legendary rabbi. Respected by his congregants and surrounded by family, no one suspects that he yearns for a life of greater personal glory, but when an oracular bird delivers what Manny believes to be a message from his deceased father, he abandons his congregation in pursuit of a life in business and his entire life spirals out of control. As Manny’s fortunes rise in the corporate realm, he falls deeper into an affair with a congregant, a Holocaust survivor, his wife sinks deeper into alcoholism and depression and his daughter, traumatized by a sexual scandal at college, makes Manny the target of a plot to shatter his newly-found empire. The devoted family matriarch, Minnie, observes and recounts the tragic downfall of her family, unable to save them from themselves.

Prayers for the Living: A Novel, by Alan Cheuse

Review "It is a pleasure to recommend a novel this good and this wise." — Sanford Pinsker, Hadassah Magazine"Prayers for the Living troubles notions of righteousness and forgiveness, madness, and fate, providing no easy answers while still leaving readers feeling edified. Cheuse’s is a challenging and intelligent novel, replete with beauty and heartbreak, and perhaps even containing a measure of redemption." — Michelle Anne Schingler, Foreword Reviews"Cheuse’s complex approach to storytelling via conversations, letters, and prayers is so much bigger than a typical narrative, as is this provocative story." — Denise Hoover, Booklist Online"If this morally complex saga of one man's rise and spectacular fall in late 20th century America is typical of the quality of the [new] publisher's titles, its future is promising." — Harvey Freedenberg, Shelf Awareness"The tragic story...makes for an interesting, intense and unforgettable read.” — Caresa Alexander Randall, Deseret NewsPraise for Prayers for the Living:"[Prayers for the Living] deserves to live among the great novels of Jewish American experience. It is a book that bears the weight of something old, yet feels new and utterly alive at the same time." — Tova Mirvis, author of The Ladies Auxiliary, The Outside World, and Visible City (from the foreword)“‘I want the world,’ shouts William Dubin, the biographer-protagonist of Bernard Malamud’s Dubin’s Lives, raging at a life that thinks he should survive without passions. Meet Dubin’s kinsman Manny Bloch, the tormented, cursed hero of this fine novel by Alan Cheuse. At once tender and brutal, unsparing and wise, Prayers for the Living masterfully ventriloquizes not only the voices of Manny and the people he cherishes and destroys, but those of an entire America staring at itself in a cracked mirror.” — Boris Fishman, author of A Replacement Life“A tour de force of voice, character, and psychology from an American master at the height of his powers. Minnie Bloch’s tale of her family’s slow disintegration echoes Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! recast in New York and New Jersey, a search for understanding and meaning amidst the wreckage of a life gone off the rails in pursuit of the American dream.” – Christian Kiefer, author of The Animals"Cheuse enlarges the immigrant tale of aspiration and loss. His narrator, in a lyrically heightened dialect as bold and capacious as the voices of William Faulkner, propels the story toward its conclusion with a dire largeness of scope that deserves the word ‘tragic.'" – Robert Pinsky, author of Gulf Music

About the Author Alan Cheuse has been reviewing books on All Things Considered since the 1980s. Formally trained as a literary scholar, Cheuse writes fiction and novels and publishes short stories. A Prayer for Humanity in Turbulent Times By Civis Enormously affecting and lyrically told, author and NPR book critic Alan Cheuse’s latest novel Prayers for the Living is a contemporary parable about an ancient theme--the price of human ambition. Here ambition manifests itself as an urgent and relentless drive to reach the topmost rung of the corporate ladder, never mind the cost to family, community, and spiritual faith. Set in New York and New Jersey, the narrator is Jewish matriarch Minnie Bloch, and when the novel opens she’s about to tell her friend Mrs.Pinsker “grandmother to grandmother” the story of the rise and tragic fall of her son Manny, a rabbi who gives up his spiritual calling to become head of a business conglomerate. In the preface, Cheuse notes that he was inspired by a 1970s New York Times story about Eli Black, a rabbi from Long Island who went on to head United Brands until his involvement in an international bribery scheme was uncovered, whereupon he jumped to his death from the roof of a Manhattan office building. Cheuse’s novel may be read as a commentary on the dangerous allure of corporate success, but in the imaginative leaps it takes, Prayers for the Living moves beyond pure realism and reaches for the dazzling heights of spiritual revelation: at a key moment in the book a young Manny has a vision of a pigeon he believes is speaking to him in the voice of his long-dead father, asking if he wants to be rich as well as blessed, and in that moment Manny is transformed, his hair turning “almost completely white.”Minnie narrates Manny’s story in four parts, Afternoon, Twilight, Evening, and Night, chronicling the breakdown of Manny’s marriage to his wife Maby, his affair with Holocaust survivor Florette, and his tumultuous relationship with his college-age daughter Sarah, later known as Sadie, who, outraged by what she sees as her father’s emotional abandonment, becomes obsessed with destroying everything her father has built. “It’s an old story, darling,” Minnie says at the start of the book, and indeed this is the power of Cheuse’s novel. Manny’s story is a classical tragedy played out in our contemporary era, its twists and turns made all the more poignant because it is told in the unfaltering voice of his mother Minnie, her prayers a plea not just for her son Manny, but for all of humanity in these turbulent times.

By delicateflower152 Narrated by the main character’s mother, “Prayers for the Living” creates a feeling in the reader that they are eavesdropping on a very personal, private conversation. Alan Cheuse portrays Minnie Bloch, as an elderly, Jewish grandmother, and yet also a very discerning woman who recognizes her son’s weaknesses as well as his strengths. As Minnie Bloch and her friend, Mrs. Pinsker, talk, Minnie Bloch relates her son Emmanuel “my Manny” Bloch’s story. A once noted Rabbi and very successful businessman, Manny witnessed his father’s tragic death. This childhood tragedy brought him into contact with the Sporen family who are harboring their own dark secrets. Married to Maby Sporen and following her father’s death, Manny becomes business partners with her brother Mordachai from whom Maby is estranged. An affair with Florette, a congregant and Holocaust survivor, leads to further turmoil in the Bloch household. One final, nuanced tragedy ends Minnie’s tale and leaves the reader feeling numb.Just as a conversation between two intimate friends would do, the narrative of “Prayers for the Living” ebbs and flows. Moving between the characters’ lives, with asides and comments by Minnie Bloch, the novel is engaging and, at times, tedious. The language, syntax, and attitudes are true to the characters’ origins and age. Developing the novel through Minnie’s biased, but brutally honest observations, Manny and his family become very human. Their flaws and emotions are real. Yet, Minnie never quite lets go and keeps herself involved in the story. “…always the poor mother takes it on her head, and where would they be without her?” and “…They want a reason, they want a mama to clean up after them.” Minnie is not above dramatizing her role in the Bloch family’s turmoil and its impact on her. “…She was tired, she slept. I was weary, I collapsed.”Divided into four sections – Afternoon, Twilight, Evening, and Night – “Prayers for the Living” is not a novel to one reads quickly. A prayer addressing the primary subject of the section follows each one and emphasizes the progression of Manny Bloch’s adult life. Each heartfelt prayer is thought provoking. Each speaks louder and more poignantly of life, love, and family than does the narrative. Each adds to the reader’s understanding of the characters.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A noble aspiration, not quite achieved. By Thomas F. Dillingham I wish I could give this novel a higher rating, but its flaws finally caught up with and passed myadmiration, leaving me struggling to finish the final hundred pages. Alan Cheuse was a verytalented writer, a fine book reviewer and critic, and his fiction has been widely admired. In this novel, Minnie Bloch, an elderly Jewish woman who lost her husband at an early ageand has devoted most of her life since to caring for her son, Manny, as well as for hergranddaughter, Sarah/Sadie, as they pass through tumultuous decades up to the beginningof the 21st century. The narrative is "delivered" by Minnie through lengthy monologueto her friends, with detailed descriptions of the events, behavior, dialogues, and eveninner thoughts and motivations of her husband, her son, and many other characters, including her daughter-in-law and her son's mistress. The plot has some surprises, butmost of the events are foreshadowed or even mentioned in passing as Minnie's monologuesprogress. She is often funny, often wise, sometimes profound, so her lengthy monologuesdo, in fact, fit into Cheuse's characterization of them as in the Talmudic tradition. Butthere is entirely too much of them. The story proceeds very slowly at the beginning, withmany digressions about the lives of Minnie's friends and other relatives, and with theinadequately developed "life" of Manny's brother-in-law, Mordecai (nickname, Mord),who is both an agent of Manny's rise to economic and mercantile power and of hisfall from that position. Manny, who attempts to live his live as both a Rabbi, servingthe members of his synagogue and living the spiritual life of a man of God and God'sLaws, and as a corporate executive who brings the perspective of God's laws tothe corporate board room until the complexity of that place and situation no longerallows him to do so, leading to his destruction. Cheuse hopes that Minnie's narrativesof this rise and fall will carry mythic power. That is a noble ambition, but the result ismore like an excessively lengthy stretch of hearing and hearing and hearing longone-sided conversations by a saddened and weakened but still loving mother andgrandmother. In both the Foreword by Tova Mirvis and the Preface by Alan Cheuse, the reader is almost warnedagainst making negative comments. In both, the novel is ranked with works of unquestionedgreatness. Cheuse explains his choice of narrator, the grandmother, Minnie Bloch, bymentioning his own childhood experiences of hearing his maternal grandmother and theother women in his family in the kitchen talking, where they "told stories and added commentary, their inadvertent domestic version of the Talmudic tradition: biblical narrative with aninterpretive edge." He goes on to describe his narrator's "burning declaration aboutlife on earth and beyond," and he has claimed a quality of "superrealism" for thenarrative, ranking it with works by Virginia Woolf and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Mirvis also,in her Foreword, makes large, though somewhat more modest claims, for the eminenceand great humanity of this novel. Great humanity it certainly offers, but it is finallyunsatisfactory because excessively repetitive and at some points tiresomely overstated. It is usually an error to claim equality of one's own work with great names of the past.Rhetorically, such claims seem to intend to silence or preempt criticism. Most readerswill not respond positively to that kind of warning against their critical intelligence. The novel is a work of great ambition and noble aspiration--but it cannot overcomethe error of its chosen method. A good editor would and should have persuadedCheuse to trim it back--the repetitions in Minnie's narratives are not eloquent andcumulative, just irritating after too many pages. I wish I could recommend it; I do not.

A STARTLINGLY ORIGINAL, GENRE-BENDING LITERARY DEBUT IN WHICH A LOVESICK COLLEGE STUDENT IS ABDUCTED BY HIS FUTURE SELVES.After Henry's girlfriend Val leaves him and transfers to another school, his grief begins to manifest itself in bizarre and horrifying ways. Cause and effect, once so reliable, no longer appear to be related in any recognizable manner. Either he's hallucinating, or the strength of his heartbreak over Val has unhinged reality itself. After weeks of sleepless nights and sick delusions, Henry decides to run away. If he can only find Val, he thinks, everything will make sense again. So he leaves his mother's home in the suburbs and marches toward the city and the woman who he thinks will save him. Once on the George Washington Bridge, however, a powerful hallucination knocks him out cold. When he awakens, he finds himself kidnapped by two strangers--one old, one middle-aged--who claim to be future versions of Henry himself. Val is the love of your life, they tell him. We've lost her, but you don't have to.In the meantime, Henry's best friend Gabe is on the verge of breakdown of his own. Convinced he is somehow to blame for Henry's deterioration and eventual disappearance, Gabe is consumed by a potent mix of guilt and sadness. When he is approached by an enigmatic stranger who bears a striking resemblance to his lost friend, Gabe begins to fear for his own sanity. With nowhere else to turn, he reaches out to the only person who can possibly help him make sense of it all: Val.The Lost Boys Symphony is a beautiful reminder of what it's like to be young, lost, and in and out of love for the very first time. By turns heartfelt and heartbreaking, Ferguson's debut novel boldly announces the arrival of a spellbinding new talent on the literary stage, in a master feat of empathy and multilayered storytelling that takes adventurous literary fiction to dizzying new heights.

The Lost Boys Symphony: A Novel, by Mark Ferguson

Review "Agonizingly real. Emotionally perfect. You can taste the weedy, sour first beers that Val and Gabe share months after Henry's disappearance, hear the jangling syncopation of the songs in Henry's head ... it all plays out in a constant state of fluttering, haloed authenticity ... Ferguson does not judge. He does not coddle. He simply tells his tale and lets it lie there, as beautiful and broken as anything else in the world."―Jason Sheehan, NPR.org"Mark Andrew Ferguson hinges the classic love triangle conflict to a mind-bending page-turner about madness, time travel, and alternate realities. Mesmerizing and dazzlingly original--a breakout novel."―Wally Lamb, author of We Are Water and She's Come Undone"Vivid, haunting, stellar prose. A brave meditation on the fragility of the mind and the treachery of the heart."―Matthew Quick, author of The Silver Linings Playbook and The Good Luck of Right Now"This book, like good music, will sweep you up.... Despite all the time travel, Ferguson's core is a coming-of-age tale that takes the form of a love triangle; remove the fantasy, and you have a novel as old-fashioned as Jeffrey Eugenides' The Marriage Plot. But that's not a bad thing--Ferguson never stresses the weirdness of his construction, focusing instead on convincingly realistic details so that even the surrealism seems earthbound. Moving."―Kirkus"THE LOST BOYS SYMPHONY's complexities are fascinating and its characters haunting. A must-read for fans of the offbeat."―Michael Cart, Booklist"The Lost Boys Symphony is a crazed and discombobulating odyssey. Ferguson takes big risks and tackles big themes in this daring, savvy, and delightfully unpredictable debut."―Jonathan Evison, author of West of Here and The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving"In The Lost Boys Symphony, Ferguson bends the sides of a love triangle so far, he also bends minds. Full of suspense and empathy, this novel has changed how I think about time, perception and love."―Claire Cameron, Baileys Women's Prize-longlisted author of The Bear"Graceful rhythms. Accessible and intelligent. Comfortably free of pretension. Resonant."―Publishers Weekly"A wonderfully mad fugue of young love and time out of joint that grabs you from the first scene and keeps you guessing until the last."―Matt Ruff, author of The Mirage and Bad Monkeys

Time travel on a personal level By lisally Musical prodigy Henry’s life has fallen apart following a breakup with his girlfriend, Val, and her transfer to another school. Haunted by increasingly bizarre hallucinations, Henry is led one night to the George Washington bridge, where he subsequently passes out. On awakening, Henry not only finds himself perfectly sane, but in a remote cabin the Catskills rather than on the GWB. His two abductors, one middle-aged, and one an old man,, are looking to fix their own lives as well, and may in fact be versions of Henry from the future. The back blurb is a bit misleading, as the story actually is less about the relationship between Henry and Val, and more a twisty story involving time travel. Henry has somehow tapped into some natural music of the universe that allows him to travel in time. Alternating chapters follow different versions of Henry as he attempts to undo his past mistakes. Although this is potentially confusing, it’s actually pretty easy to follow and the chapter title usually gives the age of the Henry it follows.Henry’s chapters alternate with those following Val and Gabe, Henry’s best friend since childhood. The two are brought together following Henry’s disappearance. Although these chapters are generally more mundane than Henry’s, Gabe finds himself questioning his own sanity when he is seemingly haunted by a future version of his missing best friend.Despite some big ideas involving time travel, The Lost Boys Symphony always feels like a rather intimate story with a very human focus. The characters are all pretty well developed, and the ending is actually pretty clear despite all the twists and turns.A review copy was provided through the goodreads.com first reads program

Henry and Gabe have been best friends since they were toddlers and Henry and Val have been high school sweethearts for years. After a few years at junior college, Val decides that she needs to discover herself and runs off to NYU, leaving Henry and Gabe behind. Within a year, Henry has spiraled into his first psychotic break. But here comes the tricky part, is Henry actually insane, or is he a time traveler?During Henry’s first break with reality at 19, he collapses on a bridge only to be captured by his future selves, 41 and 80. From here, we skip around a lot, progressing from Henry’s age at 19 into the future as if he had never met his other selves and how his life would have progressed. But 41 and 80 have different plans. Due to his psychosis and tendency to go off his rocker every decade or so, Henry’s life became a mess. So at the age of 80, Henry decides he is going to go back in time and “fix” his past mistakes, starting at 41. When everything goes awry, they go to 29, and then eventually lead back to 19.Honestly, I don't know how I feel about this one. The concept was intriguing, very reminiscent of The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Butterfly Effect as other reviewers have mentioned. My issues lie in the characters. Not only are they kind of s***ty people, but they are rather underdeveloped. Don’t get me wrong, s***ty people can be entertaining, sometimes even likeable in their own way, but their lack of depth is what makes this one fall flat.Henry is a bit of a self-centered whiner, at every age. Granted, I am sure if any of us were losing our grasp on reality, we would all be whiny complainers too. Plus, he obsesses over everything. To be fair, some are on his delusions which revolve around a cacophony of sounds, particularly a sort of symphony (see what they did there) created by noises surrounding bridges. Given these things, Henry is still the most likeable and developed character, even if we have no idea what he is thinking or doing.Gabe, Henry’s supposed best friend, is kind of a douche. Ever since Val appeared, he has been not so secretly in love with her. I’ve never understood this, but I guess this happens more often than we realize or The Cars wouldn’t have made a song about it. Not only do we not get to know Gabe aside from his secret obsession with Val, but he doesn’t really seem to care two licks about what happened/is happening to Henry. It’s all about him. As soon as Henry is out of the picture, guess where he runs. His moral fiber runs deep.Gabe knew at that moment that they would not be resisting forever. They wouldn't be resisting at all. He told himself it was for the best. The longer they went without touching each other, the better it would feel when they finally did, and when Gabe really thought about it that meant that the ethical concerns underpinning their mutual resistance were more or less moot. Better to do it sooner rather than later. They'd enjoy it less. Which in turn would make it more acceptable. Then we have Val. As I said, she escapes her boring life at Rutgers with Henry and Gabe to go find herself at NYU. She loves Henry more than anything but feels trapped by his happiness with the boring here and now. At 19, I totally get that. It’s selfish, but we all deserve that. I can’t really judge wanting more out of life. What I don’t get is that she bartered with her mother to break things of with Henry so that she could go to NYU. Seriously? Yeah, you love him, I can tell. Even though I didn’t particularly like Claire in The Time Traveler’s Wife, at least she really loved her time traveler and she definitely had more depth and emotion than this poorly written character. The Lost Boys Symphony is not without its redeeming qualities. It is ultimately a story about love, sacrifice, and how even the smallest choices we make effect our future and the lives of those around us. This is reality and not everything can be painted in rose colored glasses, nor should they be. Honestly, I think if the characters provided more feeling and depth, I would have enjoyed this much more. People aren’t perfect, but we need to know they are real.

I'm unsure who I was rooting for, or what I wanted to happen, or what I expected to happen. This book never seemed to have a logical path and in that I was both surprised and not surprised by each event that happened in this book.Firstly, a note of clarification. I've been dying to read this book ever since I read its blurb, but I feel like the blurb was a tad misleading--Val is not lost in the traditional sense of the word; she is only lost to Henry, and Henry's sanity is a little questionable. With that in mind, this book is equally about Val, Gabe, and Henry (though Henry is multiple characters in himself), and the relationship between the three and the pairs that make them up. It's about them, about love and the ties that bind more than it is about time travel, and its about the different paths life can take and how these paths intermingle. The three characters didn't really play on my emotions at all. I could relate to Val and Gabe a lot, especially the rollercoaster of emotions they went through--at multiple points I could sympathise so hard. All three of them seemed kind of lost in this world, and Val notices this at the beginning. She tries to fix it by leaving Henry, and while her decision makes sense, I'm not sure if she found what she was looking for in leaving him or at any point afterwards. I'd have liked a little more day-to-day information about them, as I didn't feel like I knew them very well. I did enjoy the little backstory we got of them in high school, meeting. There's a really intriguing circle going on. Henry at 80 discovers time travel first and comes for 41, and with each decision a younger version of themselves make their memories seem to be overridden, but each decision has consequences of epic proportions. The plot of this book isn't quite linear--though are books with time travel ever?--but certain events drive it forward.Ultimately, I think Henry acts both very selfishly and very selflessly, and shows that it's the quality of life that really matters. It also made me think about memory and how life occurs in the past, in the memory, and how easily events and people can be erased from the world's collective memory. While I wasn't as enthralled as I thought I'd be based on the blurb, I do recommend this book. It was well put together and definitely went in ways that surprised and intrigued me. I'm still not sure how I feel about it, or if I feel very strongly at all, but it's well worth a read and I'm looking forward to anything other novels Ferguson might write. I want all my friends to read this so I can discuss and dissect this book, and I'll probably read it again as I think there were some nuances that I missed that pull this story even more tightly together.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It is pretty sound and I like how there are so many combinations of personalities to go along with the rare INTJ. I do wish these other types were presented in a table so I can better identify myself. Looks a bit confusing. But my most critical feedback on this is the lack of author perspective. I think it would have made the book more valuable if the author had his views on the matter too or maybe she his personality type so we readers can relate. It's a minor thing though because at least he managed to explain every type of personality and explain how it compares to INTJ. It's purely informative and adhere's to Carl's theories. But theories are subjected to debates and hearing the author's side would have made me think a bit more.

By FRI_DAY I highly recommend this book to any INTJ who seeks meaning, truth, answers and confirmation. Moreover, this book is a perfect guide for INTJ to understand and manage behavior, relationships and careers.I think that many INTJ may recognize themselves in every single page of the book as i did. After much unfulfilled research online and through many books about possible career paths for INTJ I found this book to be informative on another level to say the least. I cannot say enough good things about this book and how much it has meant to my personal growth and development. No filler in this book! Simply a must for any INTJ wanting an in depth user manual for their inner mental workings. This book provides a solid, well-rounded treatment of the INTJ personality.

By Jennifer Lara Each person is unique, we are like grains of sand: none are alike regardless of the circumstances, our personality sets us apart in the crowd. And this book is the book that best explains how this works. Not only teaches you the possible events that may influence in the personality but those that shape the character. As well as our weaknesses and our strengths are a result of experiences and is not as complicated reforge certain points of our personality. This book is able to identify personality types, know that things can be similar and know how to speak with one individual. This book is a great book, very useful if you work in public relations or have direct contact with customers

New Orleans' private detective Luke Jacobs doesn't take too well to murders happening around him. He's been on a solid run of assisting local police with cases and maintains a strong reputation of doing good work. However, when a few bodies turn up in an area adjacent to his office and the post Katrina setting is still a disrupted mess, things get personal. Luke is juggling a mixture of activities and has a recurrent dream of 19th century Southern struggles which keep playing in his consciousness. With all that's going on in the Crescent City, he has to cross a high wire and do a balancing act. On board is the motley crew of associates: Matt Harris, street wise rough cat of questionable integrity, Jan Martinez, college student beauty with a handle on things most folk ignore and Joe "Fingerprints" Sway, Luke's college buddy who has just moved to the area from New York and can't quite figure out the crazed maze of New Orleans' sociopolitical climate. When the crimes are dropped onto the PI's lap, the city takes a pause from all of the standard activities, like Mardi Gras madness, to pay attention.
