A very detailed and interesting read By jack mac Good quality for a free Kindle book...you don't have to be an oceanographer to enjoy it.The first chapter pulled in my attention. R. M. Ballantyne described the "wondrous ocean" and hinted at the "secrets of the sea". He then launched into an informative chapter that included topics such as saltwater and freshwater and the composition of the sea.The author mentions many interesting facts, for example the combination of melting and becoming porous causes icebergs to flip over in a "terrible crash". Some people even hear and report these crashes.This book includes the history of the ocean and opinions of the ancient civilizations, risks involved at or near the subject, and patterns and identification systems that would be useful to know as a sailor.One of my favorite things about this book was the anecdotes that R. M. Ballantyne would insert into his story, experiences concerning the topic he was discussing.If any of this sounds interesting, The Ocean and its Wonders is for you.

By My 2 Cents Aquarium is an addictive read that hooked me early on, shocked me as the story progressed and made me wonder whether emotionally wounded individuals can ever truly heal.The story opens in 1990's Seattle, where 12-year-old Caitlin lives in a tiny apartment with her mother Sheri. Sheri works long hours at the local container port to support the two of them. Together their life has been built on routine. They wake early, have breakfast, and then mom rushes off to work and Caitlin goes to school. She is always the first kid to arrive at school. Mom works overtime whenever possible, and Caitlin goes to the "aquarium" after school until her mother is done with work. This arrangement was cheaper than childcare, but Caitlin doesn't mind, she loves her time spent at the aquarium, and is fascinated by all of the exotic fish she visits with each day. She hopes to study the science of fish when she gets older. When day is done Caitlin and her mother collapse together or talk briefly, unless Sheri has her boyfriend over, and then Caitlin is off to her room.One day Caitlin befriends an elderly man at the aquarium, the two talk about the fish. Soon every time she goes to the aquarium, the man is there as well and soon they begin to talk about more than just fish. Caitlin likes the man and is unafraid, so when he asks a favor of her, she thinks nothing of telling her mother. No way could Caitlin have anticipated how her mother would react, and the horrific consequences that would result as a result of the situation which has been set in motion. The mother/daughter relationship will forever be changed.I loved everything about this simple, but well crafted story. Caitlin is such a strong, and brave young girl. She's smart, inquisitive and longs to be loved. Despite the situation over which she has no control, she displays a childlike determination to make things right.The book contains lovely color photographs of exotic fish which is such a nice touch. Readers who enjoy stories about dysfunctional childhoods or coming of age stories, this is one of the best of its kind that I've read in a long time. Be prepared to be shocked! A word of caution -- a few reviews out there give away some significant spoilers, do yourself a favor, and just dive in, too much detail will spoil the experience for you. So far this is my favorite read of 2015.5/5 stars

Another excellent offering from David Vann By Cloggie Downunder “Like a leaf giving birth to stars………..Body of small green leaves, veined, very thin, its fins painted in light cast from elsewhere, but from his eye out his long snout, an eruption of galaxies without foreign source, born in the fish itself. An opening in the small fabric of the world, a place to fall into endlessly.”Aquarium is the fifth full length novel by American author, David Vann. It is set in 1994 and narrated by twelve-year-old Caitlin Thompson. Caitlin’s world revolves around three important elements: her hardworking single mother, Sheri; her best friend at school, Indian émigré Shalini Anand; and her afternoon visits to the Seattle Aquarium. The year is drawing to a close, class involves making a paper-mache Divali Reindeer and Sheri has finally met a decent man, Steve, when Caitlin encounters an old man at the Aquarium, an old man who seems as fascinated by the fish as she is. And who seems very interested in her life.Vann gives the reader a very diverse cast of characters: the effervescent Shalini; the admirably balanced Steve; the damaged and resentful Sheri; the earnestly repentant Bob. Of course, Caitlin, with her optimism, her love and her capacity for compassion, outshines them all. Their interactions are sometimes funny, sometimes decidedly uncomfortable, sometimes shockingly raw, but fans of Vann’s work will know not to expect a novel filled with sweetness and light. His work has been described as confronting. The plot takes a few unexpected turns before arriving at a startling climax.While readers may find the lack of quotation marks for speech irritating, this is more than compensated for by the gorgeous descriptive passages, especially, but not only, those about fish. “You’re in trouble, Shalini whispered in my ear, leaning close. All the little hairs stood up on my neck and I had goose bumps. Shalini could make me shiver, as if my entire body were a bell that had just been struck” Another excellent offering from David Vann.4.5 stars

It isn't about fish, but it is, to the extent that fish teach us about people. In part, Aquarium is a coming of age story, the story of a girl named Caitlin who discovers her own identity and comes to accept harsh truths about her mother Sheri.Aquarium is also about the possibility of change. The waspfish lives fifty feet underwater where light barely penetrates. Rise a few feet and the waspfish might experience a small change "as something enormous." So too might people who step outside the "narrow range" in which they live their lives. You cannot change the past, but it might be possible to change how your react to the past. Sheri hates her father but her father has changed. Can Sheri?At 32, Caitlin Thompson looks back to the time when, at age 12, she visited an aquarium in Seattle every day after school before walking home. She likes the way the fish are protected from predators, unlike the real world, where people face all the risks of fish in the ocean. Every day, Caitlin runs into an old man at the aquarium who makes a point of talking to her. The encounters appear to be innocent but the situation is ominous. Is he a lonely old man or a child molester?The leafy seadragon does nothing but hide. As the story progresses, Caitlin keeps parts of her life hidden but can't imagine living that way. "There has to be more than just hiding," the old man tells Caitlin, but hiding keeps the leafy seadragon safe. Caitlin values safety, enjoys being home with her mother even when Sheri is so wrapped up in her new boyfriend that Caitlin becomes invisible to her. Sheri is scraping by on the salary she earns unloading containers from cargo ships. The aquarium is her after-school babysitter. Sheri used to take Caitlin to work during overtime shifts until a customs inspector threatened to call social services. Caitlin's greatest fear is not of the old man but of social workers taking her away from her mother, particularly after the police correctly suspect that Sheri slapped her.What Caitlin sees of adult life is unbearably sad. People are trapped by their lives. Sheri resents working a job "that meant nothing and would lead nowhere." Hatred inspired by the father who abandoned her to a hellacious existence consumes Sheri's memories. Sheri has good reason to feel angry but she is so consumed that she pollutes Caitlin with her rage and resentment. When Sheri lets the past control her, even Caitlin's home does not feel safe. The reader cringes at some of Sheri's behavior with Caitlin, but it is hard to blame Sheri for being the person she has become. At the same time, it is easy to be concerned about Caitlin. Many of the adults in the novel feel like they are living lives filled with dents that can never be repaired; they are Caitlin's role models.I won't discuss what happens in Aquarium beyond the setup. The powerful story moves in unanticipated directions. Sensitive readers might find it too disturbing. It is often raw and painful, the kind of story that makes the reader want to scream at a character to make her understand how wrong she is. David Vann is able to spark that reaction by creating characters that are utterly convincing. Aquarium is not a sunny story of forgiveness, but it is a realistic story of redemption that reflects both the difficulty and the possibility of change.Even if you do not read this extraordinary book, you should page through it to look at the pictures of fish. They are just as gorgeous as Vann's elegant prose.

He wasn't a fool; he could see that he was easily outgunned since he carried only his Glock and an extra clip.But he left the driver's door hanging open on his rental car and ran across the parking lot crowded with customers' cars. How many potential hostages were inside that bank? How many potential casualties were there, with the way the robbers were firing those automatic weapons? The man wore his iron-gray hair in a military cut. He may have retired from the service, but he was still a soldier. "Hang in there, Sarge.""Assist…assist." Daryl Williams tried to speak through the blood gurgling out of his mouth."I already called it in when I pulled up and heard the shots. Help is coming," Blaine promised, even though they both knew it would be too late.Williams weakly shook his head. "Assist…manager.""The hostage?"Daryl nodded even as his eyes rolled back into his head. He was gone.And so was the woman. Of course Sergeant Williams would want Blaine to rescue her—the civilian. Maggie worked for a bank when it got robbed. Afterwards she moved to a new location, and worked for a new bank. It wasn't long before the new bank she worked for got robbed. This time the mask men shot a security guard, and attempted to kidnap her. FBI agent Blaine Campbell got there just in time, to pull her from the mask men. Throughout the story the mask men kept attempting to kidnap Maggie, and handsome Blaine was protecting her, and her unborn baby. The suspense was intriguing as to why they wanted Maggie so badly. Did they think she knew who they were? Did she see something, she does not remember?Maggie's fiancé died a few months ago when he was deployed serving in the military. He was the only one she told about her job at the bank, and procedures. A dead man can't talk...I loved the chemistry, and friendship that built between Maggie, and Blaine. My favorite kind of books are action, with romance. This book had it all. I loved it. Some books are hard to get into, or have places that you just keep reading to get to the good stuff. This book heated up in the first few pages, and burned hot till the last page.

Blaine was fighting, doing everything he knew how to catch the bank robbers and protect Maggie and her unborn baby. He was also fighting to stay objective and his crazy need to protect Maggie. He was afraid at first that his feelings for her might be clouding the possibility that she was involved in the robbery. Others in the law enforcement community were also afraid of that very thing. Even if she proved to be innocent, it didn't relieve him of his attraction to her. An interesting angle to the story in the beginning was that Blaine had several sisters . That caused him to wonder if he was being manipulated, since his sister had always known how to work up the tears. It made for an interesting addition to the story, his mistrust of his ability to discern whether she was for real or not. This book had plenty of twists and turns and had me wondering more than once.

Self, I'm sorry I ever doubtedyou. It would be for the good of all humanity if she avoided clients for a couple of days.Normally, connecting buyers with a new house gave her warm fuzzy feelings. Growing up on assorted military bases, Dani used to wish for more stability, a true home. She liked to imagine her clients getting involved in their new communities, maybe raising families. But now, on the eve of her canceled wedding, she was finding it difficult not to gnash her teeth as she showed a redbrick three-bedroom to the Parkers, a pair of adorable newlyweds. They were currently debating whether to hang their wedding portrait in the foyer or over the mantel."The picture will look great anywhere," said the besotted husband. "How could it not when the bride in it is so beautiful?"Dani managed not to roll her eyes. Sure, his petite auburn-haired wife was beautiful. But was that any guarantee he'd stay faithful?When Tate had told Dani the international software company he worked for needed him in their Helsinki home office for four months, they'd made plans to visit each other and talk often. She'd gone to Finland once, after he'd had a few weeks to get settled, and he'd come to Atlanta for her birthday. The four-month assignment turned into six, though, and the time difference made phone conversations inconvenient. Still, Dani had seen plenty of military families overcome separation. She'd believed she and Tate could make the relationship work.She certainly hadn't expected him to cheat on her. Dani had initiated sex more than he did. When he'd first gone overseas, she'd emailed him a provocative picture of herself. He'd asked her not to do it again. He'd claimed it reminded him of what he couldn't have, but she'd thought she detected a note of censure in his tone.Well, he was out of her life now. "Bryce, yes! I knew it started with a B. Thank you.""I've caught glimpses of him." Meg gave a low whistle. "Nice. I mean, I only have eyes for Nolan, of course, but… damn!''"Exactly. I worked hard not to notice him while I was with Tate, but now I am a free woman." By Book Freak [cha] Who doesn’t love a man who is good with his hands?Danica does everything according to plan. She doesn’t jump and take the risk. Instead, she plans. She’s careful of what she does. She thought she found the right man, then she got engage, and was planning for the perfect wedding. She thought she was going to have her happy ending, until her fiancé decided to call the wedding off. But there’s always sunshine after the rain – because there’s this Hot Architect she was eying but couldn’t put a move because she belonged to someone else. But now, she’s single… perhaps it was a sign.What she didn’t expect was to meet Sean Grayson – the twin brother. He wanted to tell her that he wasn’t the Hot Architect, but the intense attraction, not to mention raging hormones made it hard for him to tell her. There was no way he was going to refuse her, she was something he wanted. But what if she finds out the truth? Would she settle for him?I like a man who is humble, and someone who can be vulnerable but not overly dramatic. Someone who is not afraid to tell his feelings and not come out as mushy. This is why I like Sean. He was persuasive, and he did everything he could to rectify his previous mistake. Now if she can just look past it and realize he was more than his brother, and he wasn’t a bad catch…It’s fun, romantic and sexy with great characters, and some unexpected love affairs along the way. This is a read that you’ll surely enjoy.

For that reason when I received an ARC of Good with His Hands by Tanya Michaels By Isha Coleman Anytime the words Blaze grace the cover of a Harlequin novel a seductively entertaining read can be expected. For that reason when I received an ARC of Good with His Hands by Tanya Michaels, I couldn't wait to get started. This is the story of a woman trying to reclaim her sense of self after a recent heartbreak. In order to do that she decides to pursue her secret crush. Boy is she in for a surprise when she ends up going after the wrong guy. The guy she is falling for is not her secret crush. She is falling for his twin-who she didn't even know existed. I would describe this book as a hilarious and heartwarming sexy read that I could not put down.

Sweet romance By The Book Reading Gals Thoughts: I’ve always loved The Wrong Bed series under the Harlequin Blaze titles – particularly when they deal with twins. In this case when Danica’s engagement gets broken she finally decides she needs to act a little more impulsively for once – little does she know however, that when she makes a move on the ‘Hot Architect’ down the hall, that she’s really hitting on his twin brother! Unlike his uptight older brother, Sean is up for a good time – and he’ll do anything to get to know intriguing Danica just a little bit better. And the more he knows, the more he realizes he doesn’t want it to end with just one night.I thought this one was great addition to the Wrong Bed series….though I thought Danica was a bit harsh with her lack of forgiveness and not taking responsibility for her own role in what happened. Sean told her who he was, he certainly gave her enough clues that all was not as it seemed, and she just didn’t want to believe him. She didn’t know ‘Hot Architect’ either, and she was just as willing to sleep with him – but the chemistry was so hot with Sean….that alone should have been a sign! Sure, she marked it sown to not being as open to the signs because of her engagement, but she really needed to take responsibility here and give poor Sean a break!Once she lighten up, it was really a sweet little romance worthy of the Blaze Wrong Bed series….:)Rate: BReview by: Sarahhttp://www.thebookreadinggals.com

JAN MORAN is the author of the books including Fabulous Fragrances I and II, which earned spots on the Rizzoli Bookstore bestseller list. As a fragrance and beauty expert, she has been featured in numerous publication and on television and radio, including CNN, Instyle, and O Magazine, and has spoken before prestigious organizations, including The American Society of Perfumers. She earned her MBA from Harvard Business school and attended the University of California at Los Angeles Extension Writers' Program, studying fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting.

Past After reading everything I could find by Victor Hugo the last 18 months I thought I would never be enthalled by another book again, but I was wrong!Jan Moran's book "Scent Of Triumph" took me to another place and time, and isn't that what all great historical novels do. Until Victor Hugo returns from the grave I'll be looking forward to Jan Moran's next gem.

It was written beautifully and I could not put it down. It takes place during world war II and it felt real. I like books that help you to feel the time and include things that could have really happened so you can learn something.I highly recommend this book and will recommend this to my book club for next years list.

A story of love, loss, and rebirth By Suzanne yazzie I loved this story of a young French woman whose sheltered and lovely life are suddenly torn apart by war and the loss of her beloved family and business. It is a tale of the power of one womans love, sorrow and spirit that built an empire out of ashes. She showed us that with love, sacrifice and great determination we can accomplish anything and restore all that was lost. It is a story of hope and the power of love and Jan Moran told it beautifully.
