It is today a recognized fact that no life worthy of our reverence, or even a life calculated to awaken our fear, is the result of accident. Whatever may be the character, its basis has been the result of long-developing causes. This the life of Nathan Hale well illustrates. He was born at a time and under influences that were sure to develop the best qualities in him. He was an immediate descendant of the best of the Puritans on both sides of the sea.

No hyperbole or pandering to the youth this book is aimed at. While written for middle school students, this book has enough substance to be enjoyable for adults. The numerous letters by Hale, his family, and contemporaries bring this biography to life.I read my first biography of Nathan Hale in 5th grade, in the 70's, and fell in love with his story. To this day he is still my favorite historical figure. In the interviening years, I have read both good and horrd biographies of NH's life. Most of the biographies are just too fictionalized. This book sticks to facts without being dry. I learned a couple of facts I did not know.Written just over a hundred years ago, this book could be published today with only one modification. That being changing the number of years since he died (140 years in the edition that was digitized ).The mini biographies of family and friends was a nice bonus. Including the story of Major John Andrê made this story complete. (I learned a couple of facts about him I did not know also.) How they were treated is striking in the differences. The commentary on these differences is simple but powerful.A must read for anyone who appreciates Nathan Hale's sacrifice .
