An adventurous debut novel that cross cuts between a competitive college swimmer’s harrowing days in the Rocky Mountains after a major airline disaster and her recovery supported by the two men who love her—only one of whom knows what really happened in the wilderness. Nineteen-year-old Avery Delacorte loves the water. Growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts, she took swim lessons at her community pool and captained the local team; in high school, she raced across bays and sprawling North American lakes. Now a sophomore on her university’s nationally ranked team, she struggles under the weight of new expectations but life is otherwise pretty good. Perfect, really. That all changes when Avery’s red-eye home for Thanksgiving makes a ditch landing in a mountain lake in the Colorado Rockies. She is one of only five survivors, which includes three little boys and Colin Shea, who happens to be her teammate. Colin is also the only person in Avery’s college life who challenged her to swim her own events, to be her own person—something she refused to do. Instead she’s avoided him since the first day of freshman year. But now, faced with sub-zero temperatures, minimal supplies, and the dangers of a forbidding nowhere, Avery and Colin must rely on each other in ways they never could’ve imagined. In the wilderness, the concept of survival is clear-cut. Simple. In the real world, it’s anything but.

Girl Underwater, by Claire Kells

From School Library Journal Avery is the youngest in a family of athletes from Boston. She's a sophomore at Stanford when the plane she's taking home from school crashes in the Rocky Mountains. She is one of the only survivors, along with Colin (a teammate) and three young boys. They spend five days huddled in the wilderness, facing severe cold, snow storms, and a bear attack. Both Avery and Colin are uniquely qualified to survive—Avery's father is an ER doctor who taught her the basics, even taking her along to the ER on Saturdays to work by his side as she was growing up. Colin has a preternatural calm and optimism, as well as strength and a way with kids. But something happens on the fifth day that makes Avery so ashamed she cannot visit the boys or Colin after their rescue. She even lies to the media. Kells's choice to alternate chapters between the event and its aftermath effectively ramps up the suspense concerning the details of the tragedy and Avery's subsequent struggle with PTSD. Avery is a strong, if flawed, character, and teens will love her deeply emotional, at times angsty, story. There is a strong bond between Colin and Avery that brings a will-they or won't-they element to their relationship. Colin is a truly good person, and readers looking for a humble hero will swoon. VERDICT With the pacing of a thriller and the heart of a romance, the novel steers readers through one young woman's survival of a devastating tragedy.—Angela Carstensen, Convent of the Sacred Heart, New York City

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC - intense, addictive & emotional By ktu35114 Thank you Judy from Random House Australia for inviting me to read this fabulous debut. Claire Kells has created one amazing New Adult romance. Her characters are complex and the topic is no easy subject to write about or read for that matter, PTSD is a taboo subject really, but the realism Ms Kells inflicts in her book places you right in the heart of Avery. The details of the plane crash were meticulous and with so many happening in real life these days, it brings to the forefront the topic of locator beacons. I really loved the scene when the plane was falling between Colin and Avery, it was very sweet and inspiring. Colin is such a beautiful guy that is totally misunderstood, but he is my hero.Avery Delacorte is a nineteen year old swimmer. She’s been in the pool since the age of three and is the youngest of four children. Her three older brothers are in the spotlight themselves, two being baseball superstars and one in Hollywood. Avery had moved across the country to be part of the best college swim team and to escape expectations from her family.Avery became a different person when she moved, popular and social and a much loved boyfriend that’s also on the swim team, Lee. Her first week as a freshman and the first person she notices in the pool is Colin Shea. His butterfly was powerful and he stands out against all the others in the pool. He was clearly born to be a swimmer and is being called the next Michael Phelps. Now a sophomore and Avery is heading home for the holidays. Colin and Phil Markey (also on the team) are on the same flight. Colin is a massive muscular guy and ends up sitting next to Avery, though she isn’t happy about it; she has been avoiding him since she started college. Anyway, Avery dozes off, it’s a six hour flight after all, but is suddenly awoken with screams and panic.Colin is calm and confident, he takes Avery’s hand and tells her “we’re going to make it, Avery” they weren’t going to die. How does he stay so calm is such chaos? As they fall from the sky, Colin and Avery look at each and then “don’t be afraid” BANG CRASH!Will they be rescued? How will they survive in a wilderness that’s covered in snow? Will they give in to their true feelings? What will happen if they return? The intense scenes in the wilderness, the survival skills that Avery learnt from her father and the love she discovers are all incredible in itself. But with the addition of the other elements about her brother’s, her family life and Colin revealing his, adds to one marvellous debut. Ms Kells is now certainly a favourite of mine and I cannot wait to read what she creates next.

By David This book is a fun read, and Claire Kells has a remarkable knack for weaving a story of adventure, survival, love, and anguish. This book will obviously be compared to the Twilight and Hunger Games series. They all feature a female lead character caught between two romantic interests, struggling with both internal and external conflicts and threats to their survival. They're also fun stories that make great reads. Girl Underwater breaks from the other two in some important ways.First, it's realistic. There's no sci-fi creatures or illogical dystopian future. The scenario could actually happen. This puts a good amount more weight on the author's shoulders to keep things credible, and Kells delivers. She doesn't invent a new order of beings or silly technology to get out of a plot hole. Secondly, the heroine isn't just a confused teenager but a competitive athlete and interesting girl. She's someone young people can look up to and older people can hope to see in their kids. She has her flaws but she also has a multitude of strengths that make you appreciate the depth of her character.Hollywood execs: buy the rights now. This book would make a great film. Readers: Snatch this book up and have fun with it. Then anxiously wait for the followup. There could be a sequel, but I'd much rather see what else Ms. Kells can imagine. I can imagine that this could be a sleeper hit that everyone comes back to read after the second or third book smashes records. So get in on the ground floor of this remarkable author's storytelling. People who don't like to have fun: you need not apply.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A thoroughly engrossing book By Chick Lit Central By Jami DWe all know the statistics about air travel. How it’s so much safer than driving a car. How the number of people dying in plane crashes grows smaller every year, while the number of people who survive them grows larger. How, despite recent news, plane travel continues to get safer and safer every year. Yet who among us does not squeeze the arm rest just a little tighter during take-off and landing? Driving a car at least provides an illusion of being in control. There’s no such illusion strapped into a plane seat. For Avery Delacorte, the protagonist of Claire Kells’ Girl Underwater, the airplane that takes her and her college swim teammates, Phil and Colin, from their California school to their hometowns near Boston, only represents the six hours in between her and reuniting with her family for Thanksgiving. Sophomore Avery finds Colin, a powerful senior, particularly intimidating, and is dismayed when he plops down on the seat next to her. But when the flight goes down somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, she’s glad that calm, strong Colin was her seatmate. Avery and Colin help three small boys out of the plane; Colin carries an unconscious pregnant woman on his shoulder. They’re the only survivors, and they watch the plane sink into an enormous, cold lake. Luggage floats nearby, but the lake is cold and the swimmers are hurt. They’re in the middle of nowhere and winter is coming. How will they survive? While structured differently, Girl Underwater reminded me a lot of Tracey Garvis-Graves’ novel On the Island, as both books made me think about how long I’d survive in such conditions. Maybe about eight hours. I don’t know how to make a fire from two sticks, or stitch a wound together, or which mushrooms are safe to eat. Books like these are not only entertaining, they’re survival guides. But structure is key in differentiating these two books. While On the Island (soon to be a major motion picture!) was told in a linear fashion that kept readers wondering if there would ever be an "Off the Island," Girl Underwater alternates between the plane crash and its immediate aftermath with Avery’s story a month later, as she tries to physical and mentally recover. The boys are hospitalized but okay, while Colin is still in critical condition and being transferred to a hospital closer to his home.As this structure reveals itself within the first few chapters, I’m not giving anything away by describing it. I did, however, wonder why author Kells chose to tell the story this way. As it’s told from Avery’s first person point of view, it seems obvious that all five crash survivors go on to survive their five-day stranding. The mystery then boils down to simpler questions about why Avery doesn’t want to see the boys or Colin again. What exactly happened while they were stranded? Why does she feel so guilty? What is she hiding?Girl Underwater is a thoroughly engrossing book. The scenes with the five stranded in the snowy Rocky mountains are so well-written, I was completely transported to the setting. However, the scenes of Avery coping after her rescue are sometimes confusing when they should have been mysterious. There are plot holes and inconsistencies that made me wish that such a wonderful book had had a better editor. And while I had no trouble believing that Avery’s surgeon father would have taught her basic – even advanced – life-saving medical techniques, it was too much that he’d taught her advanced survival skills as well. As the Church Lady on Saturday Night Live used to say, "how convenient." Still, these problems only slightly diminished my enjoyment of the book. Despite these flaws, it’s “unputdownable.”Many readers take up the hobby to be transported to happier, more romantic places – Elizabethan England, high school romance. Then there are those of us who read to go to those bad places – haunted houses, war, desert islands, plane crash aftermath. These books show that not only can man triumph over nature’s worse impulses, we can also triumph over our own.Originally posted at chicklitcentral.com

About the Author

Manda Collins spent her teen years wishing she'd been born a couple of centuries earlier, preferably in the English countryside. Time travel being what it is, she resigned herself to life with electricity and indoor plumbing, and read lots of books. When she's not writing, she's helping other people use books, as an academic librarian.

By teach4173 review This is book 1 in the Lords of Anarchy series. After the recent death of her brother, Miss Leonora Craven is determined to find out the truth about how he died. The only way she knows how to get information is to get help from Lord Frederick Lisle, one of her brother's closest friends. He also happens to be her ex-fiance.Frederick, Freddy, and his friends are determined to find out how Jonathan Craven died. When Leonora comes to him for help, he proposes that they have a sham engagement as a way to get into the infamous Lords of Anarchy club which they believe had a hand in Jonathan's death. But what happens when Freddy wants to make their engagement real? Can Leonora let her heart win over what she thought was the right decision years ago?I really enjoyed this story. I loved that Leonora didn't feel right about her brother's death and wanted to find out what really happened. She wasn't going to sit back and let life go on when she knew something wasn't right.I think I fell in love with Freddy during this story! I loved that even though he was hurt by Leonora breaking off their engagement, he loved her enough to try again...swoon!I think this is going to be one of my favorite series by Collins. Next up is Good Earls Gone Bad which tells the story of the Earl of Manwaring and Lady Hermoine Upperton whom we met in this story. October seems like such a long time away...Thanks go out to St. Martin's Press via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Cousin ,” Freddy said through clenched teeth. “And we were only talking. Good God, Leonora, no wonder your brother refused to speak to me for a full year afterward . I thought it was because he thought I should have married you anyway." Freddy really does care for his woman but the boy shows it at the wrong times, "A shaft of rage ran through Freddy. Leonora might have been killed, he fumed as he pulled her tighter. “Let me go,” she said softly in protest. “We’re in the middle of the park, for goodness’ sake." Nora she's so innocent and nothing is off the table for her to talk about and when she talks about what she does to herself Freddy gets all excited, "When she looked up, she saw that his eyes had darkened to an almost navy blue. “I would like to see that sometime,” he said in a hoarse voice." I enjoyed this book I loved Freddy.

This read is suspenseful and action packed and the chemistry between Leonora and Freddie is wonderful, their banter as well as sexual tension. I love how determined Freddie is not to give up on Leonora. The story had me hooked from beginning to end. I loved it and am looking forward to more from this series.

By Angela I enjoyed these five cute and sweet short bedtime stories they were pretty unique and brilliantly illustrated as well that I would think that this ebook will be great for kids especially who are animal lover readers from the ages of 4-8 years old and those may really enjoy animal ebooks where the characters actually get to speak for themselves, I thought this was well written for these kids especially so a five star rating should be given for this reason. I received this ebook for free and in exchange I have given it an honest review. Super job Uncle Amon! By Angela

The beginning of this strange adventure was my going to see a motion picture which had been made in Germany. It was three years after the end of the war, and you'd have thought that the people of Western City would have got over their war-phobias. But apparently they hadn't; anyway, there was a mob to keep anyone from getting into the theatre, and all the other mobs started from that. Before I tell about it, I must introduce Dr. Karl Henner, the well-known literary critic from Berlin, who was travelling in this country, and stopped off in Western City at that time. Dr. Henner was the cause of my going to see the picture, and if you will have a moment's patience, you will see how the ideas which he put into my head served to start me on my extraordinary adventure.

Amazing Read By Timothy Mcfarland Jr. I had to read this for a History class I was taking and I thought to myself, "Oh great, a novel written in the 20's." I expected it to be slow and dry. On the contrary, it was one of the most exciting novels I had read for quite some time. This acts as an exposition of Southern California in the early 20's in the great muckraking tradition of Upton Sinclair. Great read, fast read, interesting read. Highly recommended.

A brilliant set-up for a satire, executed sharply and funnily. I love it, but I have a high tolerance for Socialist thinking and sacrelige.

They Call Me Carpenter By Breanna Holm They Call Me Carpenter is a very interesting book about what it would be like if Jesus were to have his Second Coming during the 1920s. It is very though provoking to think about how Jesus would interpret our everyday experiences and what his overall perspective of what the world has come to would be. Sinclair brings attention to the continuing hositility and differences of race and social class during this time, despite the theory of these problems stopping or at least slowing by the end of the Progressive Era in 1919. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it!

Readers of English translations of the “Kinder- und Hausmärchen” by the Brothers Grimm most likely have never actually read what the Grimms actually wrote. What people have read then are texts as they were rewritten and modified by the translators. These texts vary in their accuracy. They were modified to suit the tastes and sensibilities of the readers in question at the time the translation was made. This means that Grimm texts were censored, rewritten, modified, etc. Sometimes new text was added in, other times text deemed inappropriate to English readers of the time were removed and or censored entirely. The censorship went as far as not even translating certain stories that just could not be presented to English readers at the time at all. Here we have four relatively simple words and a small selection of other words and phrases that have never been correctly translated into English for close to 200 years. Even in the newer translations published in the 20th and 21st century, some of the same issues appear. How much does it matter? What else might not be accurate in all of the other thousands and thousands of lines of English translated text? Does anyone know that they are most likely reading the words of the translator and not Grimm? Has any English language reader ever really read what the Grimms actually wrote or did they read “fairy tales” written by Edgar Taylor, Margaret Hunt, or Lucy Crane or others? What does it do to the understanding of meaning or symbolism if words are translated incorrectly, or if elements are added to the story by the translator or removed from the story by the translator? Is watching “your luck” the same thing as “keeping an eye on the embankment?” Is “silliest” the same as “stupidest?” In the texts, “Hound-lets” are turned into “puppies,” “Truthfully” is converted to “Faith” and so on.

Hartman Addresses the haphazard manner in which Grimms' fairy tales have been handled by translators going back to Taylor and the 19 th Century treatments. No one has taken the time or trouble to point out that, as one of the Western world's more significant literary examples, the Grimms work has truly not been taken seriously. Considering them tales for children seems to have absolved translators of the stories from genuine respect.

Sharing these practices and this beloved but fading culture has led me far afield, teaching and speaking. I’ve rambled from the bayous of Louisiana to the ruined hills of West Virginia, and from Memphis to Glastonbury in search of stories and materials and ways of doing. There are so many old ideas newly integrated into my personal practice and my teaching – enough to fill a book.  And here it is. May you remember well and enjoy this next journey.

If you are interested in Appalachian life, folk medicine or folk magick, you'll find this book to be an absolute treasure!I'd encourage you to buy it as a hard copy instead of as a Kindle book for a couple of reasons...first, this is a book you'll want to dogear and use as a reference! Second, and sadly, the Kindle version loads sideways (at least it has for me) and Amazon has not responded to my several requests to get assistance.

New York City, 1972. California ad-man Henry Bell joins the Nixon re-election campaign. His son is missing in Viet Nam. His ex-wife has landed in a Connecticut suburb. Both a federal grand jury and a teenaged actress require his attention. And to uncover the truth of his own life, he needs to weave a safe route through the troubles caused by a cast of advertising misfits; through stacks of cash, secret films, and plain-clothes cops; through bribery, burglary, and blackmail. Follow Bell from Madison Avenue to Universal City, and from San Diego to Washington, D.C. Meet Bertie Kahn, the legendary “sound-man,” who wrote his first jingles while building booster engines for Project Apollo; Sal Pacinetti, ex-Democrat, free-lance romantic, and drug-addled guardian of the Central Park lagoon; and Tasha Kelly, alias Tanya, the fashion model who meets her maker on the cold gray banks of the Hudson River. And hold on tight when their destinies collide, on a moonlit night under marble stone. This is the world of SPLIT THIRTY: where politics meets advertising, at the cross of hope and faith.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Major New Talent? By D. B Whittle Davidow's apparent first work, Split Thirty, is like a gritty novelistic version of Mad Men. It is far less stylized and far more realistic and (in my mind) compelling. The novel's protagonist, ad-man Henry Bell, has sold his soul to the Nixon re-election campaign, but what follows is not the narrative arc that you might expect or predict. Davidow has an unusual ability to alternate the foreground (the characters) with the background (I felt like I was actually walking down the streets of 1972 New York in many scenes). At a time when so much writing is formulaic, Davidow brings a refreshing new syncopated rhythm to his novel, and Split Thirty could mark the beginning of a whole new series of inter-linked novels that go both backwards and forwards in time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Split Thirty Is A Winner! By Kent M. Barker Split Thirty by Michael Davidow is a remarkable book that patrols the avenues of New York City, Washington D.C., and the sunny coast of California during the Nixon campaign for re-election in 1972. They did not call it CREEP for nothing. Our country was ill from a disturbing war in Southeast Asia and the rise of a counterculture distrustful of its post World War II leaders. The author gives us someone to make sense of this troubled time, the even more troubled Henry Bell. Haunted by the death of one young son years before, Henry Bell searches for the truth about his surviving son's helicopter mission Vietnam. He does so while navigating the inner workings of election politics in California, New Your City, and Washington DC. Exhausted, noble, tortured by his own war experience in Italy during the '40's, Henry moves from one errand to the next, a product of his time and yet unique in his attempt to remain virtuous in the eyes of his own fragile moral code. The author has an uncanny knowledge of the presidential campaign politics of the 1970s with detail and insight into how the game was played and why it was so distasteful to the America that would eventually learn the secrets. A new America would emerge. I highly recommend this book, especially for those of us who came of age in the 60s and 70s, as a look back at a crucial time in our history that shaped the country's future, for good or for ill, all in the name of winning. Enjoy Split Thirty!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Personal and Dynamic By Harry A. Shepler This book is a fascinating retrospective on the seedy climate of Nixonian politics, and the gritty nature of NY City in the early 70s, along with a personal plot that is compelling. Often, one feels like he is actually a character in the book, experiencing plot right along with the book's characters. Davidow (the author) has a deep understanding of the history and milieu of the times, which comes out in vivid detail in many scenes. Also, Davidow is masterful in weaving the author's message and character development in the many dialogues among the characters. Rather than descriptive telling of the story, it flows through the conversations of the characters. A compelling novel and a first rate at that.

"It’s a beautiful day. It’s always a beautiful day in Los Angeles. You stop noticing after a while; the monotony of perfection. I am intensely aware of my own discomfort... the ache in my bones... we sit on the grass next to a sleeping winehead. The filthy pigeons circle us like ragged junkies mooching for change. An empty crack vial, trodden underfoot and shattered, glints like stardust." NOTRE DAME DU VIDE [first published in 2009 by French publisher 13e Note Editions] is presented in English for the first time in this e-book edition. This short story collection - which introduced Tony O'Neill to French readers - won acclaim from the likes of Le Monde who said, "[with NOTRE DAME DU VIDE] O'Neill stakes his claim as a possible 21st century successor to the drunken blues of Bukowski or the space-age junkie fantasy of William Burroughs," and Bâtard Sournois who compared the book to, "Lou Reed at his most dissolute, Trocchi at his most angry and poetic."

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Best collection I've ever read/ By Ryan leone I usually don’t like short story collections, even if they are by authors that I like or am familiar with. I often find collections tepid and boring, almost as if they are a lazy attempt for the writer to capitalize on their already established name. But I am a writer and I have made many failed attempts to write short stories myself. The truth is, they are really challenging. You have to write something engaging in a restricted landscape and make everything fit tightly within specific parameters. I think that is why so many great novelists have put out bad collections. I have read two novels by Tony O’Neill, Sick City and Digging the Vein, both exquisite, examining the underbelly of society in a raw and naturalistic way. So I knew what he was capable of and was expecting something good, even if they were short stories, what I read ended up being something great, succeeding way past my expectations. I can confidently say that this was the best collection I’ve ever read. When I started reading Notre Dame Du Vide on my Kindle I didn’t expect to get very far. With collections I usually read a story and then save the rest for a later day. The first thing that struck me was his Author Bio, this guy has lived a really interesting life, from his battles with various addictions, his ex-wife burning his poetry collection, playing with Brian Jonestown Massacre, his success as a writer both in the US and abroad. He also has blurbs from Irvine Welsh and Jerry Stahl; two of my favorite contemporary writers who I think Tony O’Neill ranks with. The first story in the collection, “Not Quite Joe Meek”, drew me in immediately. I spent a rather hazy decade slamming heroin, coke, and crystal meth. I’m also living in L.A, trying to “suck on the teat of the film industry”, and having the obligatory delusions about the big break I’ll get with my screenplay. Tony O’Neill captures the hellacious act of intravenous cocaine use while sprawling the screenplay notes we all “know” will catapult us to the good life. I found it refreshingly honest and spot on with descriptions. The rest of the collection is full of all the literary attributes that most writers strive for in collections but often fall very short. There is tons of irony (the hilarious dope over death bit in “Waiting for CJ”, my personal favorite, this is seriously golden writing), reoccurring characters, unifying themes, atheistic overtones, and even some continuity like the last two stories. There is a prostitute that steals a guy’s balls, an encounter with a bristly ***hole, pimps, drug dealers, rehab counselors, and countless classic junkie moments that could only be written by someone who has experienced it firsthand. The real thing that I admire about Tony O’Neill’s prose is his command on dialogue. His dialogue is so fluid it makes me jealous, I remember hearing a quote about a painter that saw another painter’s painting and was saddened because they knew they would never be able to create something so beautiful. That’s how I feel about him; he’s operating at a level that few of us will ever see. There wasn’t one story in this collection that felt subpar to the rest. They all fit nicely into a big drugged out quilt. And there was a lot of humor, my personal opinion is that humor is the last functioning coping mechanism of an addict, so it made the whole thing scarily realistic and mimicked the perspective of a drug addict: he skillfully takes your guard down and then throws in some very powerful imagery in a single line that hits you below the belt. Just like the brief glimmers of pain and reality you get when you’re using.I finished the book at 4 in the morning, first time I’ve ever read something in one sitting. If you don’t know who Tony O’Neill is, you should. His writing is an antenna sticking out of a dark world that many will never experience, a really fun place to visit, that you should make a point never to live in.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The TRUTH By Yellowbananababy This is the second Tony O'Neill book that I've read. I'm not sure when he wrote this book but it seems to me that his writing has gotten even better since he wrote digging the vein. Tony is the kind of writer that is comforting to read before you go to bed. And both of the books I've read by him are about shooting dope and smoking crack. I guess it's comforting because he has his own voice and it's like listening to an old friend tell war stories. I've read a lot of books about the drug lifestyle and he's one of the only ones that I actually believe. You can tell straight away the ones that aren't with it or are trying to be someone they're not. The good writers make you laugh and feel sad at the same time and Notre Dame du Vide is one of those books. It's just a really fun roller coaster of short stories. You never really know where it's going to take you and it goes in some pretty wild directions. The seventh OD is my favorite story (it really hit home for me, man.) My fiancé just bought Sick City and Down and Out on Murder mile and he says they are the real deal as well. I love when you think you've run out of good authors and then you find one as good as Tony. This is a great book of stories. Highly recommended, my man and I are literally binge reading everything he's ever written because he's that good.

Two female vampires crave the blood of innocent young girls and women. A deeply disturbing glimpse at the darkest side of humanity, as told through the lives of Iris and Anya Greenwood, two women who live as a prosperous suburban married couple. Iris is the portrait of a woman tortured by dark instinct, held prisoner by a private lust and craving for the unspeakable. Hidden in a wealthy suburb of Richmond, Virginia, Iris and Anya have accepted the fullness of who they are, and the terrifying acts they must perform in secret to survive. Burdened by generations of darkness and hidden depravity, Iris uncovers the depths of human evil exposed, and the reality of a natural, apocalyptic bloodlust passed down from mother to daughter. The Greenwood revelation is the truth of human hypocrisy unmasked, and the deadly corruption that often lurks unseen behind the walls of privilege, and behind the smiling faces of cultured civility.

A new American classic: a dynamic tale of triumph against the odds and the compelling story of one woman's struggle for equality that belongs alongside Jazz by Toni Morrison and The Color Purple by Alice Walker.

Ivoe Williams, the precocious daughter of a Muslim cook and a metalsmith from central-east Texas, first ignites her lifelong obsession with journalism when she steals a newspaper from her mother's white employer. Living in the poor, segregated quarter of Little Tunis, Ivoe immerses herself in printed matter as an escape from her dour surroundings. She earns a scholarship to the prestigious Willetson College in Austin only to return overqualified to the menial labor offered by her hometown's racially biased employers.

Ivoe eventually flees the Jim Crow South with her family and settles in Kansas City, where she and her former teacher and lover, Ona, found the first female-run African-American newspaper, Jam! On the Vine. In the throes of the Red Summer, the 1919 outbreak of lynchings, and race riots across the Midwest, Ivoe risks her freedom and her life to call attention to the atrocities of segregation in the American prison system.

Skillfully interweaving Ivoe's story with the stories of her family members, LaShonda Katrice Barnett's Jam on the Vine is both an epic vision of the hardships and injustices that defined an era and a moving and compelling story of a complicated history we only thought we knew.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A brutal piece of US history brought into brilliant clarity through the life of a strong Black woman By H. Williams While the overall narrative is heart-breaking, the exceptional life of Ivoe Williams is a microcosm of Black lives and culture at the turn of the 19th century. LaShonda Barnett is an academic, so the footnotes at the end of "Jam on the Vine" reveal the huge amount of research that her debut novel required. The footnotes also uncover startling details about the Jim Crow south and the earliest Black migration north, but the emotional story is clear and the fact that it is based on a number of truths we would like to forget makes it even more powerful. This historical novel is broken into two parts:-- The first part describes the young life of Ivoe Williams and the trials her family endures in the Jim Crow south. Ivoe is smart, learning to love reading while young, and takes advantage of a number of events that allow her to escape Texas. While Ivoe is the main character, her hard-working mother Lemon is a rich character who drives much of the novel.-- The second part describes the relationship between Ivoe and her partner (another exceptional character) in Kansas City researching stories and printing the first Black female-owned newspaper. Missouri is not much better than Texas at times, but eventually the two women succeed in building a fulfilling life together while also helping everyone around them. Before this novel I didn’t know much about the journalist Ida B. Wells, who investigated southern lynchings and on whom the character Ivoe is very lightly based, or about Charlotta Bass, who was the first African-American woman to own and operate her own newspaper. The imagined relationship between the two and their final rise above their institutional tormentors to see a world that is possible without racism is inspiring although I kept waiting for something awful to happen again. This terrific novel makes a number of important points without being preachy (something that Ivoe has to learn as she begins writing). "Jam on the Vine" presents the story of one woman as a part of the history of Blacks fighting for justice. It is alternately horrifying and gripping, but ultimately completely satisfying.(Photo of Sarah Schulman and LaShonda Barnett in discussion about the novel at The LGBT Center in NYC, Feb 2015)

She is a black woman/child de By Amazon Customer In the end, Ivoe Williams is a classic character that leaves you feeling empowered and changed for the better. She is a black woman/child determined to be a journalist under impossible conditions in the early 1900's. And who knew black folks were worshipping to other Gods beside Jesus in Texas at this time?As a reader, the tender relationships between Ivoe and her family captured me from the first page. How precious is a mother's love? There are no words. How precious is self-determination and courage? There are no words. Ivoe Williams shares a great resemblance to that American trailblazer, Ida B. Wells. And did I also mention that like, "John Saturnall's Feast," the food in this book makes you want to grow a garden or visit a farmer's market and run to your kitchen and prepare some jam for the folks you love. With her writing hand, LaShonda Barnett has plowed and planted herself in a field of flowers with Zora, the Two Toni's and Alice. This is a classic book destined to make you weep and dream for a brighter day.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A reason to read again By Regina Quattrochi "Jam on the Vine" is a lyrical and lush novel. Like its title it's sweet and enduring. LaShonda Barnett deftly weaves the story of a young Black woman determined to follow her dreams in the era of Jim Crow South. She gives her heroine tremendous depth, courage and integrity as she confronts the ravages of racism, sexism and the taboos against same sex relationships, Barnett's prose delivers an emotional wallop without being sentimental. It reminds me why I loved to read in the days before I became distracted by social media and reality shows. I can't wait until Ms. Barnett publishes her second novel!
