Mystery, Suspense, Romance and Sex—I was like a fat kid with a slice of chocolate cake By Lorraine Joy If you are like me and you love mystery/suspense but you don't want to give up good romance, this is a great reading choice for you. This was my first Cynthia Eden book and it will not be my last. I love the creativity that went into creating the story line of “Eve” having amnesia. Eve’s depiction in general was well done. She was genuine, vulnerable and she had a little kick a@$ in her too. We get less from Gabe but we still have a very alpha male who is fiercely protective of Eve.The story is really enthralling. You will find yourself trying to figure out what happened and who did it from page 1. This is one of those books that disrupts your sleep pattern because you just have to know what happens next. It's got twists and turns and a well done ending that you might not be expecting. The fact that Eve has amnesia adds an interesting layer to the developing romance. Quite logically, Gabe is concerned about moving forward with a relationship with Eve given that she could wake up any day and remember that she was in love with somebody else. That bit of conflict adds a little angst to the story that is logical and doesn't cross the border into melodrama.I also really like the supporting cast of this book. Gabe works with an agency called LOST that finds missing people, the agency has an entire team of professionals similar to the team from the popular TV series Criminal Minds. The POV in the book rotates so that we sometimes get to see what the supporting characters are thinking and it's always interesting. Speaking of rotating POV, we also get to see what the killer is thinking sometimes which is also fascinating. This book and this author are going on my recommended reading list.Complimentary ARC provided by publisher (Honest review, includes all my usual bias but nothing extra)

This is former Navy SEAL and LOST founder Gabe Spencer, and artist/painter Eve Gray’s storyline.Told from several third person perspectives the storyline follows Eve Gray as she endeavors to uncover her past, her memories, and truth about what happened years before. A tortured and concussed Eve awoke in an Atlanta hospital with no memory and no idea what had happened; her only clue is a newspaper photo where a missing heiress who looks identical to Eve is said to be a victim of a serial murderer dubbed the Lady Killer. When the authorities refuse to believe her story, Eve seeks out the one person she hopes will help-Gabe Spencer-a virtual stranger but a man she knows will ‘find’ the truth. As Gabe begins to piece together what little information Eve can supply, our couple find themselves on Dauphin Island, Alabama where everyone knows Eve as Jessica Montgomery. What ensues is the unraveling of a suspense filled mystery, where a serial killer has targeted women who look exactly like the woman in question. As Eve’s memory returns, the killer strikes again leaving a path of clues in his wake. I guessed the identity of the killer almost immediately upon introduction although some readers may interpret differently the information and clues. The relationship between Eve and Gabe is one of immediate attraction but Gabe refuses to become involved with his client-even a beautiful and broken client such as Eve Gray. When Gabe suspects that the killer is close, his only recourse is to keep Eve closer; so close that our couple with eventually act upon their mutual attraction and sexual desires. The $ex scenes are intimate, realistic and moving. There are no erotic, graphic depictions but there is some definite fire and heat. The spirited secondary and supporting characters include the members and agents of LOST: ex FBI agent Dean Bannon, forensic specialist Victoria Palmer, psychiatrist and profiler Sarah Jacobs, and former detective Wade Monroe. We are introduced to the inhabitants of Dauphin Island including Jessica’s ex boyfriend police chief Trey Wallace, and her brother Pierce Montgomery. Many of the locals have a colorful history; Trey and Pierce are all too willing to reveal Jessica’s sordid past. Cynthia takes us into the mind of a killer: his thoughts, his desires, his need for revenge all the while he plans and searches for his next intended victim.BROKEN is a story of suspense; a murder mystery where a series of missing and murdered women resemble the one who got away. Cynthia Eden writes with passion and imagination. Her characters are real; their emotions tangible; and their histories heartbreaking. BROKEN is a fantastic start to a new series.

So many opportunities and so many great characters. I liked the concept of the team LOST, who they are, what they do, and I like building a series of books around them. I know this is a romantic suspense, but shouldn't there be some humor in it? This book was the flattest I've read in a while, just non stop who's pushing who around now, who's scared of finding out what they don't know, will she get her memory back, do we really WANT her to have her memory back, and so on.It's not sustainable tension, after awhile you're just like get on with it already. This heroine was brutalized and tortured, that's how this starts, yet she instinctively feels safe with a great big ole guy when she has no memory? Maybe that's it, she has no memory and is pure instinct, and her instinct tells her that Gabe is one of the good ones. I guess I answered my own question there.I think it's very hard to make your heroine amnesiac and a victim at the same time, then also try to make her likeable. She doesn't know who she is, so how are we supposed to? Yes, we witness her learning things about herself, but it feels like watching a lab rat in a series of staged events. Let's take her to familiar places and see how she reacts, for example. Let's expose her to all these people she used to know and see if that triggers her.I know that's not unusual in a story about an amnesia victim but it just seemed forced. We know one of these people she meets is going to be the killer, and I don't think that's a spoiler, going into a story like this you expect it. I find it difficult that none of the people she met triggered zero reaction. Course, I"m not a doctor or psychiatrist and I don't understand amnesia but you would think the same base instinct that has her trusting the hero SO implicitly would also trigger her around the bad guy. Especially given the history that unfurled at the end.So that brings me to my final point, there was no fun in this story. Shouldn't I have been entertained in some small way, even in a romantic thriller? Shouldn't I have had my heart pounding so hard at some point and so desperate to find out who did it, and once I did I just had a huge adrenaline surge of relief and was happy it all ended well? I didn't get that. Great potential for these characters but they failed to reach out and pull me into their lives. I regret that because more than any of the other two or three star books I've read lately this one really had the germ of "it" in it. Just wasn't pollinated.
