Mystery, Suspense, Romance and Sex—I was like a fat kid with a slice of chocolate cake By Lorraine Joy If you are like me and you love mystery/suspense but you don't want to give up good romance, this is a great reading choice for you. This was my first Cynthia Eden book and it will not be my last. I love the creativity that went into creating the story line of “Eve” having amnesia. Eve’s depiction in general was well done. She was genuine, vulnerable and she had a little kick a@$ in her too. We get less from Gabe but we still have a very alpha male who is fiercely protective of Eve.The story is really enthralling. You will find yourself trying to figure out what happened and who did it from page 1. This is one of those books that disrupts your sleep pattern because you just have to know what happens next. It's got twists and turns and a well done ending that you might not be expecting. The fact that Eve has amnesia adds an interesting layer to the developing romance. Quite logically, Gabe is concerned about moving forward with a relationship with Eve given that she could wake up any day and remember that she was in love with somebody else. That bit of conflict adds a little angst to the story that is logical and doesn't cross the border into melodrama.I also really like the supporting cast of this book. Gabe works with an agency called LOST that finds missing people, the agency has an entire team of professionals similar to the team from the popular TV series Criminal Minds. The POV in the book rotates so that we sometimes get to see what the supporting characters are thinking and it's always interesting. Speaking of rotating POV, we also get to see what the killer is thinking sometimes which is also fascinating. This book and this author are going on my recommended reading list.Complimentary ARC provided by publisher (Honest review, includes all my usual bias but nothing extra)

This is former Navy SEAL and LOST founder Gabe Spencer, and artist/painter Eve Gray’s storyline.Told from several third person perspectives the storyline follows Eve Gray as she endeavors to uncover her past, her memories, and truth about what happened years before. A tortured and concussed Eve awoke in an Atlanta hospital with no memory and no idea what had happened; her only clue is a newspaper photo where a missing heiress who looks identical to Eve is said to be a victim of a serial murderer dubbed the Lady Killer. When the authorities refuse to believe her story, Eve seeks out the one person she hopes will help-Gabe Spencer-a virtual stranger but a man she knows will ‘find’ the truth. As Gabe begins to piece together what little information Eve can supply, our couple find themselves on Dauphin Island, Alabama where everyone knows Eve as Jessica Montgomery. What ensues is the unraveling of a suspense filled mystery, where a serial killer has targeted women who look exactly like the woman in question. As Eve’s memory returns, the killer strikes again leaving a path of clues in his wake. I guessed the identity of the killer almost immediately upon introduction although some readers may interpret differently the information and clues. The relationship between Eve and Gabe is one of immediate attraction but Gabe refuses to become involved with his client-even a beautiful and broken client such as Eve Gray. When Gabe suspects that the killer is close, his only recourse is to keep Eve closer; so close that our couple with eventually act upon their mutual attraction and sexual desires. The $ex scenes are intimate, realistic and moving. There are no erotic, graphic depictions but there is some definite fire and heat. The spirited secondary and supporting characters include the members and agents of LOST: ex FBI agent Dean Bannon, forensic specialist Victoria Palmer, psychiatrist and profiler Sarah Jacobs, and former detective Wade Monroe. We are introduced to the inhabitants of Dauphin Island including Jessica’s ex boyfriend police chief Trey Wallace, and her brother Pierce Montgomery. Many of the locals have a colorful history; Trey and Pierce are all too willing to reveal Jessica’s sordid past. Cynthia takes us into the mind of a killer: his thoughts, his desires, his need for revenge all the while he plans and searches for his next intended victim.BROKEN is a story of suspense; a murder mystery where a series of missing and murdered women resemble the one who got away. Cynthia Eden writes with passion and imagination. Her characters are real; their emotions tangible; and their histories heartbreaking. BROKEN is a fantastic start to a new series.

16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. There was no FUN in this book By Debbie Richardson I"m sad after reading this book, because there was SO MUCH potential in it! So many opportunities and so many great characters. I liked the concept of the team LOST, who they are, what they do, and I like building a series of books around them. I know this is a romantic suspense, but shouldn't there be some humor in it? This book was the flattest I've read in a while, just non stop who's pushing who around now, who's scared of finding out what they don't know, will she get her memory back, do we really WANT her to have her memory back, and so on.It's not sustainable tension, after awhile you're just like get on with it already. This heroine was brutalized and tortured, that's how this starts, yet she instinctively feels safe with a great big ole guy when she has no memory? Maybe that's it, she has no memory and is pure instinct, and her instinct tells her that Gabe is one of the good ones. I guess I answered my own question there.I think it's very hard to make your heroine amnesiac and a victim at the same time, then also try to make her likeable. She doesn't know who she is, so how are we supposed to? Yes, we witness her learning things about herself, but it feels like watching a lab rat in a series of staged events. Let's take her to familiar places and see how she reacts, for example. Let's expose her to all these people she used to know and see if that triggers her.I know that's not unusual in a story about an amnesia victim but it just seemed forced. We know one of these people she meets is going to be the killer, and I don't think that's a spoiler, going into a story like this you expect it. I find it difficult that none of the people she met triggered zero reaction. Course, I"m not a doctor or psychiatrist and I don't understand amnesia but you would think the same base instinct that has her trusting the hero SO implicitly would also trigger her around the bad guy. Especially given the history that unfurled at the end.So that brings me to my final point, there was no fun in this story. Shouldn't I have been entertained in some small way, even in a romantic thriller? Shouldn't I have had my heart pounding so hard at some point and so desperate to find out who did it, and once I did I just had a huge adrenaline surge of relief and was happy it all ended well? I didn't get that. Great potential for these characters but they failed to reach out and pull me into their lives. I regret that because more than any of the other two or three star books I've read lately this one really had the germ of "it" in it. Just wasn't pollinated.

This is a history of an American pilot's experience fighting the Luftwaffe in Europe during World War II. Here's an excerpt from the beginning: "The Commanding Colonel stared at the big map with its red ribbons marking air trails to and from targets. He was spotting the exact point where his Third Fighter group would have to turn back and leave the big Fortresses and Liberators to go it alone into the concentrated defenses of Germany. Weather Officer Miller looked glumly at the map as Colonel Holt placed his finger on a spot. "6/10 cloud over station six." Station six was a Luftwaffe fighter field. The colonel scowled and shook his head. "Are the big boys going out?" "Yes, sir. Conditions over target are very good." Weather grinned when he said it. "We won't get much of a whack at the Jerries," the colonel said rather testily. "The Forts and Libs will make it through," Weather said with a lot of cockiness. He was beginning to act like the rest of the gang around headquarters who believed that the Forts and the Libs could go it alone all the way and shoot down any number of fighters the Germans could send up. Colonel Holt was a strong supporter for fighter cover. He was battling for a flock of longer-range fighters that could accompany the big fellows all the way to Berlin. The way things were going he might not be escorting at all within a few weeks. His Third Fighter Command might be on scouting duty. "We'll see what can be done about it," he said as he turned away. The colonel walked out of the high-ceilinged room which was buried under thirty feet of steel reinforced concrete. He came up out of the building into a drab night. A raw wind stabbed at him, and sent light clouds scudding across the face of the moon. Overhead, a night fighter growled its way through the lonely sky. The country spread around the base was flat with only a few hills to break the sameness."

Bogue These books are designed for teenage boys during WWII, but it makes for fun and light reading for us "older boys" who were born during WWII and saw many of these planes flying overhead between WWII and the Korean War and have a love of Aviation. I read most of these books when I was a young boy watching large groups of planes flying overhead heading for Korea. I'm trying to gather the full collection to pass on to my grandson and his son. Still love to read these books. Take me back to the real "Golden Years" - the care-free teenage years.

And the author really could have used a better editor. But if you give this book a chance, you'll get sucked into what becomes a compelling and enjoyable story. Mr. Avery has done his research, so the details enhance the story.

Embittered by a false accusation, disappointed in friendship and love, the weaver Silas Marner hoards a treasure that destroys his spirit until fate steals it from him and replaces it with a golden-haired child. Where she came from, who her parents were, and who really stole the gold are the secrets that fill this moving tale of guilt and innocence.

A moral allegory of the redemptive power of love, it is also a finely drawn portrait of early nineteenth-century England in the days when spinning wheels hummed busily in the farmhouses and of a simple way of life that was soon to disappear.

This novel is part of Brilliance Audio's extensive Classic Collection, bringing you timeless masterpieces that you and your family are sure to love.

109 of 113 people found the following review helpful. A book for all times, but not for all readers By Susan E. Hallander Question: How can you ensure that a person will hate a book? Answer: Make her read it for 7th grade English class, make sure that the language is old-fashioned, and above all, make sure that the ideas and concepts are over her head. If that's what happened to you, and that's why you have an aversion to Silas Marner, and you are now over 30, pick it up again. Read it twice. Silas Marner is one of the greatest novels in the English language.Yes, it starts out sad, as our pathetic hero looses both his trust in humanity and his faith in God. But the power of love replaces his lust for money, and wins out in the end. Meanwhile, morally poor but financially rich, high-living Godfrey Cass provides a counterpoint to simple Silas. At the end there's a surprise when the fate of Godfrey's evil brother is revealed. When you're all done, before you file Silas Marner on the shelf, go back and read the paragraph about Silas' thoughts when he discovers that his hordes of coins are missing. If you have ever felt sudden extreme loss, you will recognize the stages of despair from disbelief to acceptance "like a man falling into dark water." Which is why this book is not suitable for children, and is most appreciated by those who have undergone their own moral redemption.Silas has been the inspiration for many other characters, including Dicken's Scrooge. He has been portrayed in movies, including "A Simple Twist of Fate" starring Steve Martin. But none is as good as the original. If you haven't read it since junior high, try it again. Silas Marner is an excellent book. There's a gem of human understanding in every chapter.

In this story, George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans) depicts a man named Silas Marner, a weaver by trade. He lives happily in his home town of Lantern Yard, until his best friend William Dane betrays him by setting him up as a thief. William then marries Silas' fiancée, and Silas is shunned from the town. He eventually settles in a very small cottage in Raveloe, where he spends his days making cloth and other materials for the townspeople. Due to his now secretive and reclusive ways, the people of Raveloe never really come to know Silas, and he lives in solitude, having turned away from his former faith and happiness. But one winter's night, a small orphan girl comes to his house, and everything changes. Silas cares for the child (with the help of his neighbor, Mrs. Winthrop, whose family soon befriends him), and his heart begins to soften. This is a very good representation of the redeeming power of love, and the consequences of a person's actions. For people who enjoy classic literature, this is definitely a must-read.Ryan RobledoAuthor of the Aelnathan:

You are better coming to it fresh, without knowing anything of the simple yet solid plot, so I will say nothing of it. I will just urge you to read this wonderful book. Eliot writes beautifully and from page one, you realize you are in the hands of a true artist. This is a very human, very English story of simple people living through those very basic emotions that make the world turn and give the universe meaning.

Poses of peace: One photographer’s meditation on the essence of yoga   It’s taken yoga several thousand years to make the journey from a handful of monasteries dotting the Himalayas to the yoga studios popping up everywhere. Whether bathing with holy men in the Ganges or joining the chorus of a thousand voices chanting “om,” photographer Michael O’Neill decided to devote himself to experience and record the world of yoga at this critical juncture in its history. The result is a powerful photographic tribute to the age-old discipline turned global phenomenon, with over 250 million practitioners united in physical, spiritual, and mindful practice worldwide.Famous for his photographs of the famous, O’Neill first set out to make portraits of the most influential yogis of our time—B. K. S. Iyengar, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, T. K. V. Desikachar, Rodney Yee, Colleen Saidman, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa—as well as those famed for integrating yoga into their high-profile lives, such as Donna Karan, Sting, and Trudie Styler. It was a chance to honor the masters and unite his lifelong passion for photography with a newfound love for yoga and meditation. But as his practice deepened, so did his drive to look past the personalities and the poses to document the roots of yoga. Over ten years O’Neill trekked beyond the traditional epicenters to meditate with monks in the Tibetan Plateau, live with sadhus in their tents at the Kumbh Mela, and marvel at the boys who practice the little known discipline of Mallakhamba at the wrestling grounds in Kochi. Says O’Neill: “All I wanted to do was to pay homage to yoga’s classical lineage and understand this unique moment before it slips away.”Now brought together for the first time, this extraordinary XL body of work tells the story of yoga as it’s never been told before, with nearly 200 photographs, most of which have never been seen. Two of O’Neill’s most important subjects, meditation master His Holiness Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji and Ashtanga guru Eddie Stern, join the conversation with their essays on the role of yoga in contemporary culture, the history of the practice from the time of Patanjali, and the healing power of what Michael O’Neill calls “the architecture of peace . . . a series of postures that bring the practitioner closer to touching the infinite.”

The photography is beautiful and it's printed in Italy, so the photography and text is first rate. In many ways this book is a tribute to India. I've always found Indians to be beautiful and highly evolved and this books confirms my belief. This is an excellent introduction to Yoga and where it originated. The Indian civilization is 10,000 years old - we can all learn a great deal from them.

It was published in English by the Jewish Publication Society in 1911 (the original appeared in German in 1892). It had belonged to my mother's deceased brother. I probably read it four or five times before I went off to college, and I have often regretted not taking it with me--my parents wouldn't have minded, but I wanted to "travel light" and did. Many of the essays are fine works of scholarship and interpretation, and all are immensely readable. Finding that this reprint was available was a pleasant surprise, and re-reading "A Jewish King in Poland" (my favorite), "Moses Maimonides", "Heinrich Heine and Judaism," "The Music of the Synagogue" and the rest has been a very rewarding blast from the past. You don't have to be Jewish to love Nathan's hot dogs, or this book, and it is a fine reminder of the very rich cultural life of European Jewry before the war.

Only buy if you already have studied Jewish history By Love the 19th century Worth the price I paid for the Kindle version, this is an old, old book that seems to be a collection of essays and addresses given by this French Jewish intellectual (I think.) I read it while I'm walking on the treadmill and it makes the time go really fast. You have to read it within its historic context. His is the grand old declarative hagiographic, ancestor-worshipping style, before people had to substantiate their knowledge with pesky footnotes and evidence they had done real research. His thesis in many an article is that Jewish values, learning, people, had a great, widespread influence on every positive development of the western world. People who are looking for reasons to hate Jews could really takes this material the wrong way -- whether it was a hundred years ago or today. I am enjoying reading it because, as you know by now, I "love the nineteenth century."
