6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Riding Steele reviewed by The Book Vixen By Brianna Note: Riding Steele is a serialized novel in the Ready to Ride series that is being released in 6 installments, and will also be published in one volume. I am reviewing this serial as one complete piece of work. Why I Read this Book: First, I have a confession to make: I am not a fan of serials. It feels like a marketing ploy to get more money for what is essentially ONE book and I do not have the patience to wait for the next ‘installment’, especially when being left with cliffhangers. With Riding Steele being the 3rd book in a series, I don’t understand why the decision was made to chop this book up into 6 parts. However, I couldn’t resist reading Riding Steele because it’s an MC Romance and I’m a sucker for those. What I Liked: I had only requested the first installment, as this is a new-to-me author and I wasn’t sure what to expect being that this is part of a serial, but the writing captured my attention enough for me to quickly request the rest of the installments. Riding Steele has an interesting premise, and I was curious to find out why the bikers would kidnap Laurie, and what would happen with her once they had her in their hold. There was some interesting backstory with Steele and with Laurie. There’s a sad and unfortunate event that took place in Steele’s life. Laurie is trying to break things off with her overbearing boyfriend. These elements shaped who these characters are.I really liked and appreciated how each installment started off with the last scene that took place in the preceding installment. While I pretty much read these installments back-to-back, readers who choose to read this serial in installments as they come out will surely appreciate this. What I Didn’t Like: There was no real hierarchy in the ‘club’ so it didn’t really feel like an actual MC to me. Steele is referred to as the “leader”, not president, and none of the other members had a role in the club. It was just a group of guys, and a woman, who hang out and ride together. Not exactly the type of foundation I look for in a MC romance but I’ll take it. And the way the guys funded their simplistic lifestyle was a bit farfetched. None of the guys had a job, that I recall.Let’s talk about the sex. I like smut but this was a bit too much for me. Not necessary a bad thing, just not my thing as I prefer one-on-one relationships while Steele doesn’t mind sharing his woman. I hadn’t read either of the other two books in this series, and the blurb didn’t give any hint of how erotic this story is, so I had no idea until about 1/3 of the way into the 2nd installment. Also, giving someone not one, but two safe words doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. Laurie is not experienced in BDSM, so for Steele to give her two safe words with two different meanings to remember didn’t make sense to me.And for all the boinking going on, nobody used a condom nor did anyone talk about birth control of any sort. After seeing an orgy take place before her very eyes, I’d have thought Laurie would have insisted on protection. She doesn’t know any of these people, and they’re casually swapping and sharing sexual partners.Lastly, Laurie and Steele’s relationship was an insta-love, which is not my favorite.Overall Impression: Riding Steele was a good read though it was a little too bow-chicka-wow-wow for my liking, which I was totally unprepared for as there was NO indication to the level of erotica mentioned in the blurb. But for those who enjoy extremely erotic romance (we’re talking orgies, sharing partners, BDSM elements, and M/M action) and enjoy MC romance, I’d say this is the book for you.Let’s talk price: If you’re a fan of serials and love the anticipation that comes with them, and don’t mind paying more to be able to read each installment as soon as it comes out ($1.99 for about 35-40 pages, which comes to about $12 for all 6 installments), then I would say to get them as they come out. There were minor cliffhangers at the end of each installment but nothing too extreme that I couldn’t wait a week for the next installment. But if you’re like me and would rather read Riding Steele in its entirety all at once, then wait until the complete novel releases in March 2015 and get it at the discount price of $3.99.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Perfect mix of suspense and hot steaminess! By Michele ~ Devilishly Delicious Book Reviews This is one HOT story and nothing like your average MC book!Steele has been asked by Laurie’s brother to help her get out of a dangerous relationship. Laurie’s brother knows there is more than what Laurie is telling him, and he is afraid for her life. Too bad Steele didn’t know how sexy and alluring Laurie is in person, he may have changed his mind if he know what was in store for them.Once the deed has been done, Steele and Laurie are now hiding from Laurie’s former boyfriend. He’s on the hunt for her and has threatened to give her a proper punishment once he finds her for embarrassing him. While hiding out, Steele and Laurie start to slowly delve into the feelings they share for each other (that’s when Laurie isn’t trying to run away). There is the unexplainable pull that they both feel, now it’s finding out if it’s something worth exploring, or if they should just let it be.Now here comes the interesting part…..In Steele’s Motorcycle Club, they share EVERYTHING (and boy is it hot!) Though Laurie thinks she’ll be just with Steele, she gets a very orgasmic eye opener when she finds out she was wrong. But happiness can only last for so long before the danger starts to creep back in. Laurie’s ex is now closing in on them and she’s afraid for her life if he catches them. Will Steel and Laurie be able to cover come Laurie’s past and find a way to happiness? Or is the danger to strong and all that’s left is despair?I seriously loved reading this book! There was just the right amount of suspense and sex that keeps you hooked until the very last page. I can’t wait to read more from Opal Carew! If you haven’t done so yourself, I highly recommend it!**ARC was provided thru NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Riding Steele (Ready to Ride Series Book 3) By Jessica Alcazar Read in February, 2015ARC provided by St. Martin's Press via NETGALLEY for an honest review.I first got to read this really sexy and thrilling story when it was published as 6 installments. It was fantastic then and even better when I read it as a novel. Part of the appeal of the installment is the thrill the cliffhanger gives you just by being a cliffhanger (if that makes any sense lol) and I thought for sure when I read the novel, that thrill would be gone. But it wasn't. If anything, I felt even more anxious when I read this novel and I just couldn't put it down! It's not like I didn't know what was going to happen, but of course the small details that make up Laurie and Steele's relationship I didn't recall as vividly so it was FANFRIKKINTASTIC reading it again! My girlie parts were at FULL ATTENTION every time these two were together! ***fans myself*** just recalling ....Here's how the story goes .....So the story starts out with Steele celebrating his birthday at the same bar that Laurie is meeting her then boyfriend Donovan. One of the MC members witnesses Laurie being roughed up in the parking lot by Donovan and knocks him out and basically kidnaps Laurie. But Laurie is not exactly grateful, she's actually even MORE scared now and doesn't quite comprehend what's happening to her. She of course tries to escape the MC gang to no avail a few times. Her attraction to Steele grows every day, but she's still very apprehensive. They are absolute polar opposites in everything! Which of course is what makes for a very exciting and juicy read! The MC gang has zero problems with sharing partners, multiple partner hook-ups and all kinds of other juicy :) sexual acts ... but that's not Laurie...or maybe it is?! ;)Laurie is really messed up in the head from her relationship with Donovan. The man is a GRADE-A (insert word I cannot type because Amazon will not post my review if I do) and very abusive! She has serious trust issues with not only herself, but trusting Steel. Will she finally give in to her growing desire to this man who seems to only want to keep her and protect her? Will everything blow-up in her face if she does? (hint: she gives in and it is SCORCHING FRIKKIN HOT in all kinds of different manners) ~~ I must tell you that Steele's growth as a man and lover is one of the most heart-wrenching and warming reads I have had the pleasure to be a part of in a while! But that's not all Laurie has to deal with! In the mist of all of this, she's wanted for theft! Yes kids, Donovan has told the cops that she stole from him a high value piece of jewelry. SO the MC gang has no choice but to go on the run with Laurie until they can figure a way out of this mess because Laurie is now one of THEM :) and they protect their own! Their attempts at fixing this little problem blow up in their faces and doesn't go well at all! SO Laurie ends up kidnapped again, but this time by Donovan himself. And let's just say that boy is one depraved soul! But Laurie's grown some much needed balls since he's last seen her so she doesn't take what he dishes out quietly (you go girl!)Will Steele and his guys be able to save the day? Do Steele and Laurie have a future together?I think I've told you enough of this story that I should at least leave the end for you read :) I will tell you that because of Laurie's past, she craves stability and normalcy in her life and because of Steele's background, the open road is the only thing that gives him solace. Will love be able to conquer them?I shed a few tears in this book, especially at it's conclusion. It was a really great conclusion to this very scorching story!

Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today's media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts. Jesus Outside the Lines presents Jesus as this way. Scott shows us how the words and actions of Jesus reveal a response that does not perpetuate the destructive fray. Jesus offers us a way forward - away from harshness, caricatures and stereotypes. In Jesus Outside the Lines, you will experience a fresh perspective of Jesus, who will not (and should not) fit into the sides.

By Gardener&Reviewer A powerful, practical little volume!I requested Jesus Outside the Lines because of the subtitle.Who isn't tired of taking sides?I can turn on the radio these days and my head starts spinning. So many issues, so many debates, so many hot topics....How do we pick our battles? And is that even an analogy we should use?Are these confrontations to win or opportunities to engage? This book claims to point to a way forward.Does it deliver?Yes. For me it did.Scott Sauls has arranged this book around ten contemporary areas of division, in our politics, piety, fiscal policy, and posture towards others.Red State or Blue State? For the Unborn or for the Poor?Personal Faith or Institutional Church?Money Guilt or Money Greed?Affirmation or Critique?Accountability or Compassion?Hypocrite or Work in Progress?Sexual Freedom or Chastity?Hope Or Realism?Self Esteem or God-Esteem?These chapters are not in-depth sermons about each issue that tell you what to say and think/Instead, this book calls us back to foundational Gospel truths, allowing us to think about what that means for these issues.Sometimes I wish he'd had more room to explore the nuances of things, most particularly in the chapter on organized church. As always, we have to define the church first, as a family, not a building or program. And once we've said that, then people will ask why the family has to gather weekly on Sunday, in a stuffy/drafty/formal/unaesthetic building."If you're hooking up with fellow Christians, challenging, counseling, and communing with each other, isn't that church?"We all want a solid, committed, stable Christian experience, in church or out... and then we're right back where we started, re-inventing the wheel.....Even in places where you do disagree with him- on something big or small- I think you'll find him sincere and gentle. If he speaks and lives the way he writes (and people are saying that he does) then he's enfleshing his convictions with compassion, and always attempting to behold the Image Bearer in the middle of the issue. His chapter on sexual purity strikes some critically important notes. As long as fulfillment, intimacy, and satisfying relationships are linked so tightly to sex, then we can't realistically ask anyone to be chaste or celibate. So should we fling away chastity? Heavens no. Instead, he asks to provide companionship, human touch, and emotional support for each other in "friendships as deep and lasting as marriage and as meaningful as sex."Wouldn't that help everyone out- no matter why you're single or for how long? Each chapter had a few gems that I heavily underlined. In the chapter on Christianity and politics he says "Public faith enriches the world not by grasping for earthly power, but through self-donation."Later, in Affirmation or Critique? he says "If people are going to get upset with us, let's at least make sure they are the same type of people who got upset with Jesus. The lepers and the crooks and the drunks and the gluttons and the sexually promiscuous people and the sinners and the nonchurchgoers, to be clear, did not get upset with Jesus....These people were drawn to him."Jesus Outside the Lines is worth a read, sooner rather than later.

A Needed Conversation By Books and Chocolate For me, the best books are those that make me think outside my own box and encourage conversation about things that aren't always comfortable. This is one of those books.I confess I began reading it with some hesitancy because often, and even within the church, to disagree with someone or to not take the politically correct stance is automatically labeled as intolerant, judgmental, or being un-Christlike. Unfortunately, there are a growing number of Christian books that take that approach but I was glad to discover this author didn't. Instead, his focus is that not every issue needs to become a battle or a reason to take sides; that we can hold to our convictions while not attacking those who do not agree with us. He prefers to label disagreements as critiques in which we ask questions and critique opposing views in light of scripture rather than see the person as the enemy or the idea as an argument to be won at all cost so we can be the one who was the most right. As he advises, "Critique when you must - affirm when you can" (p. 98). It's a good filter to use.The chapters include the topics of politics, moral and lifestyle choices, wealth vs. poverty, and several other issues that can cause division even though not all are specifically biblical issues (being a Republican vs. a Democrat or how we spend or make our money, for example). The chapter that spoke the most to me was Self-Esteem or God-Esteem that dealt with the issue of pride and caring too much about how others see us instead of who we are in Christ. Often it is pride that drives the need to be right and it's a message I needed to hear as I try to keep the grace filter in place when encountering those I don't agree with.Striving for a way to disagree without offending or being judgmental is a good message but just as one can become a doctrinal bully on the one hand, there is the concern that this kind of message can have us can swing too far the other way and be so concerned that we not offend that we hesitate to take a stand on issues that are truly biblical ones or that are blatant sin. I felt what was missing in this conversation was how to handle those kinds of issues lovingly with other believers without compromising truth when a confrontation is needed - not to win the argument but because the other person's very eternity may be at stake if they continue down a certain path of false teaching or something the Bible clearly says is sin, yet are not open to being questioned. I understand the "eat the fish, spit out the bones" approach to those we don't completely agree with, but sometimes the whole fish (the opinion or teaching, not the person) is rotten and needs to be confronted. Maybe it is too big of a topic that needs its own book. That said, over all I do recommend this book because the message of disagreeing without offending and not needing to make everything a battle is a good one and the author encourages us to examine why we are taking sides. Is it for ourselves or for Christ? And if for Christ, are we representing Him well and responding as He would?I received a copy of this book for review through the Tyndale Blog Network book review program but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Following Jesus with humility and grace By Paul Mastin Pastor Scott Sauls attributes much of his formation as a pastor to Tim Keller, under whom Sauls served at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York. I don't know how much of Sauls's writing can be attributed to Keller, but they do share a style that is pastoral, thoughtful, and substantive without trivializing their subjects. Sauls's new book Jesus Outside the Lines: A Way Forward for Those Who are Tired of Taking Sides fits that description.Sauls starts out with a few hot-button issues of Christianity, ones which divide Christians to an extent, but which especially divide Christians from secular culture. He calls on Christians not to be sucked into an "us vs. them" mentality, but to, on the one hand, recognize that "we should feel 'at home' with people who share our faith but not our politics even more than we do with people who share our politics but not our faith." On the other hand, "if we want to follow Jesus, we have no choice but to follow him into the world and into affirming friendships with as many non-Christians as we can."When thinking and living like Jesus, Christians will be slow to condemn, but quick to befriend and offer hope. Sauls clearly upholds a pro-life perspective, but calls on Christians to value all of life. As C.S. Lewis wrote, we never meet a mere mortal. Every person has dignity and value, whether born or unborn. Similarly, he does not condone homosexual acts or approve of gay marriage; he writes that "no counter-voice can be found in the Bible that suggests a favorable view of homosexuality." Yet he calls on Christians and the church to recognize the struggle of those attracted to others of the same sex and to be a place where redemptive friendship can be found.Sauls's approach to the Christian life embraces humility, does not condemn questioning, and recognizes how imperfect all of us are. He calls for the church (and I do mean church; he's not a fan of the churchless Christian movement) to be a place where the grace and welcome of Jesus prevail, and where the categories we try to put people into mean less and less. I appreciated his engagement with secular writers and culture, and his invitation for non-Christians to read and to come to his church. I was also challenged by his reminder to pursue and value relationships with non-Christians not as projects or targets for evangelism but as friends and peers. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

In the early 1970s, Frank Chin, the outspoken Chinese American author of such plays as The Chickencoop Chinaman and The Year of the Dragon, wrote a full-length novel that was never published and presumably lost. Nearly four decades later, Calvin McMillin, a literary scholar specializing in Asian American literature, would discover Chin's original manuscripts and embark on an extensive restoration project. Meticulously reassembled from multiple extant drafts, Frank Chin's forgotten novel is a sequel to The Chickencoop Chinaman and follows the further misadventures of Tam Lum, the original play's witty protagonist.

Haunted by the bitter memories of a failed marriage and the untimely death of a beloved family member, Tam flees San Francisco's Chinatown for a life of self-imposed exile on the Hawaiian island of Maui. After burning his sole copy of a manuscript he believed would someday be hailed as The Great Chinese American Novel, Tam stumbles into an unlikely romance with Lily, a former nun fresh out of the convent and looking for love. In the process, he also develops an unusual friendship with Lily's father, a washed-up Hollywood actor once famous for portraying Charlie Chan on the big screen. Thanks in no small part to this bizarre father/daughter pair, not to mention an array of equally quirky locals, Tam soon discovers that his otherwise laidback island existence has been transformed into a farce of epic proportions.

Had it been published in the 1970s as originally intended, The Confessions of a Number One Son might have changed the face of Asian American literature as we know it. Written at the height of Frank Chin's creative powers, this formerly lost novel ranks as the author's funniest, most powerful, and most poignant work to date. Now, some forty years after its initial conception, The Confessions of a Number One Son is finally available to readers everywhere.

The Confessions of a Number One Son: The Great Chinese American Novel (Intersections: Asian & Pacific American Transcultural Studies), by Frank Chin

Review This heretofore unknown work captures the birth of a consciousness that is neither Asian or white American, but a third thing we witness being forged in the mind of its author. Its publication now should spur renewed interest and a critical reevaluation of the entirety of Frank Chin's work, and cement his literary legacy. --The International Examiner

Tight, taut and shocking, these stories all have warped love as the source of violence. Belgian/Flemish author, Bob Van Laerhoven, winner of the USA Best Book Award 2014 in the category "Mystery/Suspense" and the Hercule Poirot Prize with his controversial novel, Baudelaire's Revenge, connects the fate of individuals with profound social changes. Van Laerhoven has been a travel writer in conflict-zones from 1990 until 2003 and echos of his experiences trickle through these confronting and thrilling tales, set in civil war-torn Algeria in the fifties, in a gypsy populated Polish concentration-camp during WWII, in a Peruvian border-town where stealing is a deadly art, in Liberia during the civil war in the nineties, and in Belgian Congo during the bloody uproar in the sixties. Omnia vincit amor-Love conquers all-the saying goes. But not our Dangerous Obsessions.

Dangerous Obsessions, by Bob Van Laerhoven

Review (...) "surprise discovery."(...) I read this collection of short stories that has been translated into English and found them to be very compelling with nary a slip in the translation that might cause confusion. The Flemish author Bob Van Laerhoven translated several of the stories himself and did a fine job. (2015 - Best Books Read So Far - Island Editions The central theme of the five stories is war, love (erotic, parental, fraternal and friendly) and obsessions. All the stories are grim, dramatic, and carry a lot of psychological pain. They leave to the reader a bitter taste about humanity. But they are also breathtaking and enthralling. (...) The author does a great work to capture the reader's attention from the beginning. He describes the scenes so well that readers get a feeling that they are real.  (....) I recommend this collection  to anyone who likes  dramatic and down to the earth crime/ mystery stories.  (Castor onlinebookclub.org)Of the dozen or so stand-out individual short story collections I enjoyed in 2015, the Belgian author Bob Van Laerhoven's was the standy-outiest. Van Laerhoven's stories always surprise without descending into the cheap thrills of fakery and he uses his journalistic experience to write about the cold and the cruel aspects of human nature with unflinching truth. (Author Hubert O' Hearn in The 2015 Books Of The Year - San Diego Book Review)Each story is a lot more than just a tale; they are all profound studies of the human soul, the conditions of war and upheaval, the world we've created around us, and the double-edged sword known as love. Though this might seem like a rather grandiose ambition, to reflect on so many questions lacking concrete, once-and-for-all answers, but it ends up making for a captivating and fascinating read that sets itself apart from other books by just how much it makes you think. When it comes to the writing itself, the pen that brought us Baudelaire's Revenge is still strong as ever, hindered in no way by the fact that it had to be translated. The stories all flow beautifully from one scene to the next, and Laerhoven really has a gift for using the specific words that will hook the reader in, the words that allow him to express his ideas to his full satisfaction. Be warned that there are some relatively graphic moments in there, though in my opinion they only serve to make the stories more memorable, the kind that will etch themselves into your mind for a long time to come. All things considered, Dangerous Obsessions is a different kind of book from what you'd expect to find amongst today's vampires and werewolves; it is a philosophical exploration of the human condition, a confrontation with the darkest corners of our minds. I highly recommend this moving and gripping collection of stories to anyone seeking to be moved by something truly thought-provoking.(David Ben Efraim - Quick Book Reviews )

From the Author I'm a Belgian/Flemish author who was a fulltime travel writer in mostly conflict-torn regions in the period 1990- end of 2003. Those thirteen years have influenced my literary writing a lot. The five stories in "Dangerous Obsessions" are based on some of my experiences in war-conditions, but I've chosen to inject those personal emotions into fictitious stories, set in different countries and time-frames. I wanted some distance between me and my characters in these stories, so that I could feel free to express via my protagonists some of my deepest feelings about war, love, and obsession. I consider "Dangerous Obsessions" as an excellent introduction to my theme(s) and style(s).

By Henri Patrik I've read during one night all the stories, being five pure gems of literary pleasure. As I've stated earlier, I consider the author of "Baudelaire's revenge" whose books are actually published on the other side of the ocean, as the Belgian Edgar Allan Poe. A few stories in "Dangerous Obsessions" remind me of that author, the uncrowned king of the "dark poetry" who invented what is now called "thriller." Especially the stories "Checkmate in Chimbote," "The prodigal son" and "Lilies of the valley" have touched me deeply. In those stories, one can recognize immediately the pen that has brought "Baudelaire's Revenge" on paper. This Flemish author gives the 'thriller' a new dimension; he exposes masterly the darkest corners of the human brain, pinning the reader in his seat. A must for anyone who reads the language of Shakespeare and who likes macabre stories.

In my eyes, Bob Van Laerhoven is an author who’s swimming upstream in a book market that is flooded with shape shifters, werewolves, vampires and other “distracting” pastimes. Instead, Laerhoven writes stories that force you to think about the world that humanity has created. That seems a bit ponderous, and in a way it is. But it’s also fascinating. Set in different countries and periods – with nearly always the background of war - the five stories in this collection paint an alarming fresco of the human condition. They are tragic and twinge the reader. Although particular thrilling and compelling, they are a confrontation in lieu of amusement. Twisted love is the leitmotiv for the protagonists: between Legion-soldiers in Algeria during the civil war of the fifties, between a Belgian drunk and a Peruvian trickster in the raucous border city of Chimbote, between a Flemish mother and her black stepson whom she has saved – in a very peculiar and dramatic way – during the uproar in Belgian Congo in the sixties, between a gypsy prisoner and her little brother in a WW2-concentration camp, and, finally, between a Belgian war writer and a child soldier in Liberia during the nineties. Not only the scope of these stories is surprising; also the depth of Laerhoven’s analysis of the human soul, and the variety of styles he uses. “Dangerous Obsessions” may take you out of your comfort-zone, but the stories will linger for a long time in your thoughts.

By Denise I am a big fan of Bob Van Laerhoven’s work and was thrilled to receive a review copy of “Dangerous Obsessions.” The collection includes five short stories illustrating different human relationships and the emotions and circumstances that bind them. With a philosophical eye on life, each is filled with real-world drama coupled with a basic sense of survival. The detailed descriptions and realistic dialogue brought the stories to life, capturing my attention from beginning to end. I enjoyed these thought-provoking journeys into crises of war, as well as internal human conflict and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

Two Years in the Forbidden City, by Princess Der Ling

About the Author "Princess" Der Ling (1885 – 1944) was a Manchu, the daughter of Yu Keng. Yu Keng was a member of the Manchu Plain White Banner Corps and according to his daughter was a Lord. He was known for his progressive, reformist views, as well as for his unvarying support of the Empress Dowager Cixi. Yu Keng's daughters Der Ling and Rong Ling (1882–1973, the future Madame Dan Paochao of Beijing) received a western education, having studied dance in Paris with Isadora Duncan. Upon return from France, Der Ling became the First lady-in-waiting to Empress Dowager Cixi, as well as a translator. She stayed at court until March 1905. In 1907, Der Ling married Thaddeus C. White, an American. Der Ling had a brother, Xunling (ca. 1880–1943), who studied photography in France and later took the only photographs of Empress Dowager Cixi still in existence. Using the title of princess, which would create controversy for her in both China and the United States in future, Der Ling wrote down her unique experience in court in her memoirs Two Years in the Forbidden City, which were published in 1911, and wrote about the experience through her next seven books. "Two Years" gives historical insights into life at court and Der Ling's service to the Dowager Empress, essentially a world that has disappeared.

Happiness through Suffering

Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of the world's greatest novelists and Crime and Punishment is one of his greatest achievements. When Raskolnikov believes he is above the law, he murders an old woman and later suffers the consequences. Overcome by guilt and fear, the young man confesses his crime and goes to prison. There, he realizes that the nihilism of his past is false and that happiness and redemption can only be achieved through suffering. Crime and Punishment (Xist Classics), by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Amazon.com Review Mired in poverty, the student Raskolnikov nevertheless thinks well of himself. Of his pawnbroker he takes a different view, and in deciding to do away with her he sets in motion his own tragic downfall. Dostoyevsky's penetrating novel of an intellectual whose moral compass goes haywire, and the detective who hunts him down for his terrible crime, is a stunning psychological portrait, a thriller and a profound meditation on guilt and retribution.

From Publishers Weekly Dostoyevski's classic novel of murder and guilt, featuring the conflicted killer Raskolnikov and his intellectually nimble antagonist Porfiry Petrovich, is read by the well-regarded Dick Hill. The combination should make for a must-listen audiobook, but the results are disappointingly plodding. Hill overemotes much of Dostoyevski's emotionally charged dialogue, rendering a delicate series of encounters as an array of outbursts and breakdowns. Listeners might find themselves wishing that Hill would restrain himself from the pitfalls of facile emotion in favor of a straight delivery of the inherent drama and descriptive splendor of the novel In a welcome technological twist, however, Tantor includes an e-book with this audiobook (as it does with most of its classic audiobooks), giving readers multiple options for how they might prefer to encounter Dostoyevski. (Sept.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

From Booklist It might seem like an impossible task to cram such a heady work as Dostoevsky’s powerhouse crime novel into a graphic novel, but Mairowitz and Korkos have managed a fairly successful interpretation. They set the action in present-day Russia, which leads to some surprisingly clever allusions, but apart from that, they keep fairly close to the plot of the original, a strategy that creates some definite sticking points. Characters appear out of nowhere with little explanation of how they relate to the story, and certain minor and major details won’t make much sense to readers unfamiliar with the original. That said, the black-and-white artwork is a haunting expression of Raskolnikov’s severe inner turmoil; the stark angles, haunted visages, and heavy preponderance of black on the page captures psychological dread with an almost Hitchcockian flair. No one can expect this to match the depths of the original, but don’t think of it as a Cliffs Notes–esque alternative, either. Minor nudity, drug use, and blood splatters might make for a hard sell for classroom use. Grades 10-12. --Ian Chipman

However, we have a bit of misleading marketing going on here. Make sure you're buying the version you think you're buying before you order. "Crime and Punishment" published by General Books LLC is a poor quality scanned in version. If you do the "Look Inside" thing on this book, you'll see the inside of another version of the book, NOT the one you will receive. To give you a few quotes from the publishers website: "We created your book using OCR software ..... with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos.... After we re-typeset ... your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work .... we usually remove them. .... Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. ..... We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. .....". There's no manual editing whatsover. You get the general idea. Unfortunately, books published by General Books LLC are named, seemingly intentionally, so that they have reviews associated with much better quality imprints. General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Published (google them on Wikipedia), which is flooding Amazon with poor quality reprints and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with the original or with beter quality imprints associated with them.Seems like it's Caveat Emptor on Amazon these days as Amazon certainly doesn't seem to be doing anything to protect it's customers from this Publisher.

When you look at the (paperback) edition of Crime and Punishment translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, it says right below it, "Start reading Crime and Punishment on your Kindle..." and also lists the different versions available - paperback, hardcover, etc. - and includes a Kindle Edition. But when you click on either, you get this, which is a completely different translation. Pevear and Volokhonsky have been widely praised, their translations now considered far and away the best English versions available of various classic works of Russian Literature. But Amazon lumps everything with the same title as if it were the same product. Some of the customer-uploaded images of the book's cover even say that it is the Pevear and Volokhonsky version, but it is not. It's a 1914 translation by Constance Garnett. This is the reason people started to hate big box and online bookstores when they first started putting neighborhood bookstores out of business -- because they don't seem to care about books, just making money. But what's funny here is that they could actually charge money for the better translation, since it's new, but instead they choose to give away an inferior version and pretend it's the same thing. (They do offer the Pevear and Volokhonsky version of Demons for a price - a version easier to distinguish because the newer translation even changes the title from the less-accurate The Possessed - versions with that title are available for free.) Also, because they don't distinguish between different translations, there is no button available under the Pevear and Volokhonsky version to request that the publisher make it available for Kindle. It's also difficult to know what version of a book is being reviewed sometimes. I'll be reading reviews on the Kindle Edition page, and the reviewer will describe the fine leather binding. This is especially frustrating now that I realize the actual content - the language - of the book I'm buying could be different from the one I read about online.Since getting my Kindle, I've been impressed by the machine itself, but thoroughly unimpressed by Amazon's handling of content. They should focus less exclusively on getting people to buy the device, and work harder at improving the way they sell books and other content for it.

361 of 388 people found the following review helpful. A Classic for a Reason By Paul McGrath I initially approached this book with a great deal of trepidation. I had never read Dostoyevsky, and was concerned that I would get bogged down in some lengthy, mind-numbingly boring, nineteenth-century treatise on the bestial nature of man or something. I am happy to report this is not the case. Instead, and to my delight, it is a smoothly flowing and fascinating story of a young man who succumbs to the most base desire, and the impact this has both psychologically and otherwise on himself and those around him.To be sure, the book seems wordy in places, but I suspect this has to do with the translation. And what translator in his right mind would be bold enough to edit the great Dostoyevsky? But this is a very minor problem. What we get with Dostoyevsky is dramatic tension, detailed and believable human characters, and brilliant insight into human nature. Early in the novel our hero meets and has a lengthy conversation with Marmeladov, a drunkard. This conversation is never uninteresting and ultimately becomes pathetic and heartbreaking, but I kept wondering why so much time was spent on it. As I got deeper into the book, I understood why this conversation was so important, and realized that I was in the hands of a master storyteller. This is also indicative of the way in which the story reveals itself. Nothing is hurried. These people speak the way we actually speak to one another in real life, and more importantly, Dostoyevsky is able to flesh out his characters into whole, three-dimensional human beings. And what a diverse group of characters! Each is fleshed out, each is marvelously complex. Razujmikhin, the talkative, gregarious, good-hearted, insecure and destitute student; Sonia, the tragic child-prostitute, with a sense of rightness in the world; Petrovich, the self-important, self-made man, completely out of touch with his own humanity; Dunia, the honorable, wronged sister: we feel like we know these people because we've met people like them. They fit within our understanding of the way human beings are.Dostoyevsky also displays great insight into human nature. Svidrigailov, for example, talks of his wife as liking to be offended. "We all like to be offended," he says, "but she in particular loved to be offended." It suddenly struck me how true this is. It gives us a chance to act indignantly, to lash out at our enemies, to gain favor with our allies. I don't believe I've ever seen this thought expressed in literature before. In fact, it never occurred to me in real life!Petrovich, Dunia's suitor, not only expects to be loved, but because of his money, and her destitution, he expects to be adored! To be worshipped! He intentionally sought out a woman from whome he expected to get this, and is comletely flummoxed when she rejects him. His is an unusual character, but completely realized. There is so much more to talk about: the character of Raskolnikov, which is meticulously and carefully revealed; the sense of isolation which descends on him after committing his crime; the cat and mouse game played on him by the police detective. I could go on and on. I haven't even mentioned the historical and social context in which this takes place. Suffice to say this is a very rich book.Do not expect it to be a rip-roaring page turner. Sit down, relax, take your time, and savor it. It will be a very rewarding experience. And thank you SL, for recommending it.

Finding Rodnie By Bruce Dobkin This page-turner takes the reader into the mind of a nearly retired neurologist as he recovers from a concussion after he wrecks a boat south of the border. He is trying to find a bright medical student he taught in Los Angeles until they were separated by an accidental killing. But she is something else, the progeny of a dark cultural past. He accumulates bits and pieces as he picks up her trail again in South America, but must hide under the cover of aliases and saints to evade the considerable forces that see him as a dangerous intruder. Insights abound about the hubris that can take us down self-destructive paths. Follow his trail.

A Little Princess (Xist Classics), by Frances Hodgson Burnett

From School Library Journal Grade 4-8-The perennial fascination with Frances Hodgeson Burnett's classic story has made it a vehicle for a variety of adaptations. This audio presentation by the Saint Charles Players is an unsuccessful attempt to make the story into a radio-style version. The best work is done by the narrator who weaves story text between dialogue that is sometimes flat and sometimes overacted. Sound effects are helpful and the musical interludes pleasant, but overall this offering lacks dramatic intensity. The tapes must be played on a stereo player or part of the story can't be heard. A better choice for listeners who want to listen to the entire story would be the unabridged reading by Flo Gibson for Recorded Books (1987).Barbara S. Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library, Rocky Hill, CTCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Ages 5-7. Not just abridged but retold, this colorfully illustrated, large-format book has a text that's longer than most picture books but considerably shorter than Burnett's beloved novel. McClintock's sensitive illustrations, apparently ink drawings with watercolor washes, will certainly appeal to readers and book buyers of all ages. The period settings and costumes have a charm all their own, and the detailed pictures clearly portray Sara's transformation from privileged child to pauper and back again. Some scenes and dialogue here did not appear in the original book, but they serve to move the plot along more swiftly. The story loses a great deal of subtlety in theme and character development (as well as plot and setting) in its adaptation to picture-book format. Those who love the original will advise children to wait until they're old enough to read it. But children or parents who want a picture-book version will find this a very pretty one. By Margaret Fiore This book was a favorite of mine in my childhood, and, when I returned as an adult to re-read it to my own daughter, I discovered it all over again. This is a story about a different kind of princess than one might imagine; a princess that is an orphan - lonely, cold, hungry and abused. Sara Crewe begins life as the beloved, pampered daughter of a rich man. When he dies a pauper, she is thrown on the non-existent mercy of her small-minded, mercenary boarding school mistress. Stripped of all her belongings but for one set of clothes and a doll, Sara becomes a servant of the household. Hated by the schoolmistress for her independent spirit, Sara becomes a pariah in the household, with only a few secretly loyal friends. But through her inner integrity and strength of will, Sara Crewe maintains the deportment, inner nobility and generous spirit of a "real" princess. It is a fabulous story of the triumph of human will, and good over evil. This story is a real classic, and needs no re-writing to be as enjoyable and readable today as it ever was. Ask my 8-year-old daughter, who has already re-read it twice. Accept no substitutes, re-writes, abridgements or copies! This is a work of art, and should not be tampered with.

68 of 70 people found the following review helpful. One of my childhood favorites By Joanna Daneman This book has familiar fairy tale figures, such as a wicked stepmother-like Miss Minchin, a fairy godfather, and an orphan protagonist who is a princess in disguise. It's the story of a little girl who endures some setbacks but reaches a happy ending not only for herself, but for those around her whom she helps even when she's pretty downtrodden. The writing is charming and Sara comes through as a person who is determined to maintain her values, through good times and bad. She has a definite personality and that is a good role model for any child. She stays true to her beliefs in being kind, mannerly, charitable and above all, herself. The magic in this book is unsurpassed in children's literature. When Sara comes home, wet and cold and neglected, to find that a magician has transformed her world, you can't help but be enchanted. I will admit to reading it again now and then as an adult. The charm is still there.Just a fun factoid; A Little Princess was originally a shorter story titled Sara Crewe, in a volume of children's novelettes by Burnett.

38 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring Story! By gtruxton A Little Princess, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett was an inspiring story teaching a valuable lesson. Sara Crewe had everything she ever wanted when she went off to boarding school in London. Her fashionable dresses, high quality jewelery, and numerous accessories made her one of the elite. Sara's life was almost perfect, until her eleventh birthday, when a devastating tragedy occurred changing her life forever. Sara received news very abruptly that her father had died, leaving her "penniless". Sara's teacher, Ms. Minchin despised her because she had become poor, and treated her cruely. Now Sara must face her troubles and prove to everyone that she can be strong and perservere through her difficult times. This book's moral states that everyone can be a princess when they put their minds to it. Being a princess is not about the fame and fortune, but about how you act in the situation into which you have been placed. You can be kind, or you can be mean; you can be content, or you can be greedy; you can be upset, or you can be optimistic. The book really relates to people who are going thruogh tough times in their lives and need reasurance and confidence.
