Even though this is 4th in a series and I always recommend starting with the first book, this makes a find stand-alone. There's just enough information for the reader to get a glimpse of what they've missed, but able to understand all that happens in this one.MacIntosh and her partner, Jason Santiago, are handed three cases which are related. Random men are found with their faces slashed beyond recognition and stabbed in the chest in the shape of a cross.On a personal level, MacIntosh and Santiago have come a long way from the first case they worked together. He is funny, engaging, a bit on the sarcastic side, but he has finally figured out that he loves Ellie. Ellis, on the other hand, has a live-in boyfriend which may or may not be on the verge of falling apart. She is also clueless about her partner's feelings towards her. It's great fun to listen to the two of them bantering back and forth.The murderer remains a mystery through most of the book ... and the ending is quite a surprise. I was extremely satisfied with the ending. Hopefully, there will be another in this series. I enjoy the characters tremendously.I gave it 5 stars because of the characters, all the books in this series have been well-written, and I haven't found any details not taken care of.

It's combined with suspense, romance, excitement, and right down to a chill-bone thriller. .............Faced with endless dilemmas, Milwaukee homicide detective, Ellie MacIntosh, is at a crossroad in her life. With her love life in turmoil, and someone very close to her, being ill, the last thing she wanted to hear, was another serial killer at bay. Known in her previous cases of chasing and apprehending such known killers of this nature, she is once again faced witn another, when she receives a phone call from her partner, homicide detective, Jason Santiago, that the "slasher" has struck again. As the detectives investigated, they were aware of one thing. Even though the victimology was completely the opposite, they were convinced that both cases were related. In the middle of this horror, Ellie still sees her psychiatrist, Dr. Georgia Lukens, regarding her job, and her personal life, unaware that her partner, Jason, also sees her, after getting wounded on their last case together. What Ellie doesn't know, however, is that Jason has confessed his love for Ellie, to Georgia, and has expressed his fear, in telling her. As the case becomes more eery, they are told by the M.E., that each victim, not only had rohypnol in their sytems, but were killed by two different weapons, leaving the same mark, in the shape of a cross. What is going on? When Dr. Georgia Lukens takes on a new patient, by the name of Lea, the sessions begin to unnerve her. Why? Known for his rudeness, and obnoxious behavior, detective Jason Santiago, knows two things, not stopping until he catches a killer at any cost, and most and foremost, being in love with Ellie MacIntosh. As Jason puts out the word for potential drug dealers selling rohypnol, a certain dealer is found murdered. Feeling that these murders are somewhat related, in what Lea is telling her, Georgia realizes that there is a connection to Ellie and Jason's two murder cases, that they are currently working on. Without any hesitation, whatsoever, Georgia finds a way, without violating patient confidentiality, and informs the police. As another body is found, this one more gruesome than the others, the case takes a horrible turn. With all the clues right there in front of them, and danger right before their very eyes, Jason will do whatever it takes, to protect Ellie, only there is a bigger problem that he is unaware about. With all his great instincts as an excellent cop, his love and loyalty towards his partner, he will not be able to protect himself in the process. As Ellie discovers the truth, she races against the clock, to stop a deadly serial killer, one that is more evil than she has ever faced before, but most importantly, to save Jason's life and pray that she gets to him in time, before the clock runs out..........great thriller! I loved it!...thank you...♡♡

When called to the scene of a murder, they find it remarkably similar to a previous killing of a college professor. Both victims had been stabbed, their faces mutilated, and a cross carved into their chest. While they have no clue to the second man's identity and very little to go on, they work to build a case. In the meantime, therapist Georgia Lukens, is disturbed by her newest patient and seeks the help of another professional. It quickly becomes evident that her client is somehow connected to Ellie' s case but that knowledge in no way detracts from the telling of the story. It was very entertaining and delved further into Ellie' s relationship with her partner as well as her significant other. I love this series and was in no way disappointed in the latest installment. I would definitely recommend it to any fan of the suspense genre.

Weight loss can be a tricky thing for many people and I am among those people. So I decided to read this book and I didn't expect to find so many useful information. I enjoyed that this book gave me so much insight into weight loss that I couldn't have thought of on my own. There are a lot on the list which actually make sense if followed accordingly and aid in weight loss. The book is light to read though its short the information are very vital for someone who is losing weight. You rarely find a book that talks about weight loss motivation and this one is the best!

I liked the conversational style of writing in this book By Fiona Lane I liked the conversational style of writing in this book.The content has been explained in an educational manner and with enthusiasm that makes a reader really fixed to each page,grasping each word.The author discussed first the different weight loss programs that are popular today and then to the foods and supplements that are crucial in attaining weight loss, and the benefits of each supplements to our body.The cleansing cycle was also mentioned and the weekly routine program to maintaining a slim physique.Great book in my unbiased opinion.

This is 3 in 1 book. You can find everything from workout, fitness to diet, green drinks etc. I especially liked the part where the author gives links to websites where I can purchase these products as well as detailed nutritional information which will aid weight loss. After reading this book you will definitely know about how you should eat or not and how to workout. I highly recommend this great weight loss guide.

A Mystery For The Future By Sandra Iler Kirkland Albany, New York, is well served by the detective team of Hannah McCabe and Mike Baxter, who have been partners for around four months. Their latest case is one that is especially difficult. A local undertaker, Kevin Novak, is found dead in the basement of his funeral home, shot with his own crossbow. His wife and children report that he has been distant and upset lately but no one seems to know why, or at least no one who will talk to the detectives. There are lots of suspects. Both his pastor and the psychologist that is on call to the local megachurch where Novak was a member seem to know things about the victim they aren't willing to talk to the police about. Olive Cooper is a local town matriarch, rich and elderly. She introduces Kevin to a new lady in town, who claims to be a spiritualist. Olive suggests that Kevin would benefit from attending a séance but he wants no part of it. On the fringes is a tycoon and his assistant, friends of Cooper's, who were also part of Hannah's biggest case to date, a woman who killed without mercy and is waiting execution. As the days go on, Hannah and Mike are getting closer to an answer but the suspects are starting to be targeted themselves. Can they solve the murder before someone else dies? Frankie Bailey is a professor in the School of Criminal Justice, SUNY. She is a past president of Sisters in Crime and a part vice-president of Mystery Writers of America. In this novel, she continues the development of detective McCabe and sets an intriguing puzzle to be solved. The mystery is set in the future and mention is made of technology not yet available to help the police; this is especially well-done. This book is recommended for mystery readers.

The first line read: “After the storm passed, in the chilly hour before dawn, the last of the “space zombies” found their way back to their nest in the derelict house.” Albany PD vice cops went into the home via battering ram. They found a girl who was barely alive; it looked like an OD. And they found what they were looking for … “an impressive array of drugs and paraphernalia.” Chapter 2 switches to an alternate story and the main story line.Funeral Director, Kevin Novak, is a distinguished member of the community. However, he seems to feel more connected to the corpses at the funeral home than to his wife. It’s during a blizzard when everything is shut down; he goes back to the funeral home to keep the deceased company. He is found dead in the basement the next morning, shot through the chest with his own bow and arrow. The doors were unlocked indicating perhaps that he knew the killer. Detective Hannah McCabe and her partner Mike Baxter are called in to investigate.This reminds me of the In Death series as the futuristic components are there but not ‘in your face’. However, that’s where the similarity ends. I assume the ‘space zombies’ was possibly a nickname given to the druggies. I didn’t see any reason to believe they were literal. There are other subplots to the story that I didn’t feel were fully explained in a timely manner. The story also pulled in news about a third-party presidential candidate, Howard Miller, who was seeking to abolish the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Now unless there are two Martin Luther King, Jr’s, with a holiday, there is a mistake in the novel which suggested he died a decade ago. If the novel is set in 2020, this is wholly incorrect. I loved the winter storm as the background; the name of the storm was Jezebel. This is the 2nd in the Detective Hannah McCabe series. The mystery was complete so was easily read as a standalone. The first in the series was The Red Queen Dies. I rated What the Fly Saw at 3 out of 5.

They soon begin to realize that this isn't going to be an easily solved case as the victim seems to be well liked by all that knew him. This scenario instantly had me intrigued. For one, I loved how the author used a winter storm to add to the creepy feel that came with the victim's murder in his own funeral home. The storm gave a sense of isolation and really got the book off to a great start for me. Then add multiple suspects and no clear motive for murder and I was truly hooked. The added bonus for me was all of the little details that the author gave that brought to life this futuristic world that the author has created. I really felt like this is one of the more unique mysteries that I have ever read!My one and only complaint was that I feel like I missed out a bit on some back story thanks to starting on the second book in the series. That's my own fault as the reader. The author did a really great job of sharing details to catch the me up but there is an ongoing mystery that started at the first book and it looks like will play a role in the next one as well. This just ensures that I am definitely going to be reading book one sooner rather than later. Other readers might want to start at the beginning though which is why I mentioned it.Overall, this was such a great read thanks to the world building and the mystery itself. I loved that I didn't figure out who the killer was until the end. I really like the way the author ended this book with questions left that made me wishing that I had my hands on the next book. Aack! I hate waiting but I am really excited about this series. At least I have the first book to help lessen the wait. This is definitely a mystery series to check out. I'm not spoiling by saying a rape happens because it happens early on and is the basis for the rest of the novel. Initially, I was turned off by it and thought I'd struggle getting through the book. However, that was not the case. I found the story engrossing and had trouble putting it down.Bailey Carpenter is a private eye. Thanks to her deceased father, she's also extremely well off financially, which is important because it gives her the opportunity to hide away and not work after her attack. A subplot is that her father, who was married twice before her mother and had 5 children in those marriages, left his fortune to Bailey and her brother. So, they're being sued by their half-siblings for a piece of their father's estate. I's only after her attack that one of Bailey's half-sisters becomes her caregiver and confidant.Nothing is as it appears as Bailey seems to see her attacker in every man she comes in contact with. She becomes obsessed with a man whose apartment she can see directly across from hers. She spies on him with her binoculars and is sure that he was the one who raped her. She calls the cops every time she believes that each man definitely had something to do with her rape. Not only does she offend all the men she comes in contact with, but the cops are beginning to dismiss her accusations as she becomes even more unstable.Due to her extreme wealth, it was too easy for Bailey to cocoon herself after the rape. I kept wondering how this story would have played out if she was of moderate means and had to get up and get dressed and go to work each day. The outcome of the subplot was no surprise. I suspected it early on, and was actually disappointed when it turned out to be the case. I like to be surprised by the ending of a mystery. And, I was. Because the man who was the actual rapist is one you never see coming. Totally worth the read.

She has a talent for playing to the spectrum by writing truly heinous books like Whispers and Lies, which was singularly abominable as was Shadow Creek: A Novel; Lost (Fielding, Joy); Puppet and Missing Pieces to excellent books like Kiss Mommy Goodbye. Heartstopper: A Novel was really good. So were See Jane Run and Don't Cry Now.That having been said, this book was one that kept me reading. I actually liked Bailey who is an investigator with a bloodhound sniffer and good instincts. Her life takes a major downturn after she survives being raped, which is a singularly horrific and traumatic experience. I liked her niece Jade who is a sharp little French bulldog to her bloodhound. (French bulls are high spirited, smart and lovable.)Jade is really the only family Bailey has. Her brothers and sister Heath, Gene and Claire are alienated from her and upon their father's death the siblings are at loggerheads over the fact that only Bailey and Heath were the only ones who received an inheritance. Heath and Bailey had a good relationship and they were the ones who stood to gain regarding the inheritance. They have several half siblings who were excluded from the will and those excluded family members are hotly contesting this.Claire was a surprise. She rushes to Bailey's defense as does her daughter, Jade. Her siblings remain locked in combat and turn jaundiced suspicious eyes Bailey's way. Her siblings don't do a darn single thing for Bailey when she falls on hard times.After surviving rape, Bailey is determined to identify her attacker and rebuild her life. Her mental competence is called into question and she herself begins to doubt her own sanity. Bailey has among other issues to contend with the question of who among her immediate family members can she trust and are they what they seem to be. The family dynamics are interesting and I admit threw me off guard at least once.Finding out the identity of the rapist was a big surprise. It was like a rabbit had been pulled out of a literary hat with very unlikely and very surprising results. This is one of Joy Fielding's better books.

The plot revolves around Bailey, who is gorgeous, lives in a luxury glass skyscraper in Miami, inherited a fortune from her father, and is currently having an affair with a married man. What's likeable about that picture? And speaking as a married woman, I'd rather have someone shoot me in the leg than wreck my marriage and have a divorce harm my children. So it was a struggle to like Bailey in the first chapter or so.But wait. Only a few pages away from that first chapter, Bailey is raped.. Bailey's a private investigator, and she was checking out the activities of a suspect,. Crouching in the bushes, she hides from view without knowing how vulnerable she is.. It's late, a dark night, and the neighborhood around her is quiet, empty of other people.The attack is sudden and brutal, the rape so savage it leaves her emotionally shattered. The police try to draw information out of her, but the rapist threw a pillowcase over her head, so Bailey can only recall a few, scant facts. A pair of Nike sneakers. The scent of spearmint mouthwash. A few words uttered against her ear.The aftermath leaves Bailey panicked. She refuses to leave her condo. She takes shower after shower, and can hardly sleep, and when she does, nightmares terrify her. When she finally manages to step outside her home, every male she meets sends a shiver up her spine. Could he be the one? When a neighbor stares at her at the condo gym, she begins to run faster and faster on the machine, panicking to the point she crashes off the machine.In such a fragile state, Bailey isn't able to make clear judgments about the people around her. And Bailey is fenced in by suspicious characters, perhaps all drawn more by her money than affection for her. She has a stepbrother who is suing her for having inherited the family money. But after hearing about the rape, suddenly, he shows up at her door, claiming to be worried about her. With him is Bailey's stepsister and her reckless teenage daughter, both of whom she had hardly seen before, but who are now solicitous.Then there is her slacker pot-fogged brother, who is best friends with a long ago boyfriend of Bailey's, a boyfriend who did something to her that no boyfriend should do. Could her brother care about her and yet still try to talk her into seeing her this man?Bailey, frightened and not knowing where to turn, stays in her condo. With not much else to do, she picks up binoculars and begins to watch her neighbors in the glass highrise nearby. One man in particular draws her attention.Fielding is a terrific writer, and she knows how to ratchet up the suspense. All the characters that surround Bailey are believable, but all could have reason to harm her. You'll find yourself turning the pages quickly. And expect some twists.

Mystical magical tale of a Vietnamese psychic By Patto Rabbit's birth is attended by extraordinary circumstances, and it soon becomes clear she’s no ordinary child. Her adopted mother has milky breasts that never run dry and milky skin that never sunburns. Her father has a birthmark that shines like a star. Her parakeet talks into Rabbit's ear giving practical advice.Although the plot mainly focuses on Rabbit's adventures and tribulations, there are other stories too: her grandmother's terrible experiences on a rubber plantation, her father's bitter time in a re-education camp, and the early trauma that transformed her adopted mother into silent luminous being. There are love stories and scenes of atrocities. There's a dramatic attempt to escape Vietnam by boat across the South China Sea.The sense of being in war-ravaged Vietnam is very vivid – the charred landscape, the blackened earth, the smoldering shacks giving off the smell of burning flesh. Other parts of the country are swathes of dense humid jungle, where prisoners of war are laboring under terrible conditions. No matter who’s in power, human existence remains precarious.The writing is beautiful, mystical, and so free from the conventions of storytelling that for the first forty pages or so I wasn't sure what was happening or who was who. But the mist did clear, and the narrative became absolutely engrossing. So in the end, I admired and enjoyed the book, although I would not call it easy reading. I find magical realism challenging.This powerful novel opened my eyes to the sufferings of the Vietnamese people. It invites the reader, along with Rabbit, to hear the voices of the dead.

By missmickee/bookreview Many thanks and much appreciation to Pantheon Books New York, for the ARC of "She Weeps Each Time You're Born: A Novel" by award winning author/poet Quan Barry for the purpose of this review. Barry was born in Saigon, and raised in Boston, MA. Quan Barry is an English professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, her poetry and writing have been featured in many notable publications.The novel, reflective of the other Vietnam: the river people/tribes that inhabit the Mekong Delta. Not allowed by law to congregate in large numbers, the villages were smaller, consisting mainly of women and children who cared for their elders. They fished, farmed, cleared the jungle, engaged in logging. The houses floated on the river sometimes. The noticeably absent men, may have been in the military, employed elsewhere, working on the rubber plantations, or possibly in re-education camps.Cambodian refugees, blended in with the general population, and avoided speaking, as to not betray where they were from. Conversation as we know it in our society, was non-existent in that part of Vietnamese culture. The story appeared to be disjointed, it was hard to follow: Barry only allowed the perceptions and observations of these villagers and that of the main character Rabbit. Rabbit, an unknown woman seer, had visions, impressions, and heard the voices of the dead, which appeared to her at random.(From the book)... "Rabbit's head suddenly filled with a silvery light.. Someone had died right there in the pilothouse. It had happened recently. And now someone was trying to talk to her, a spirit desperate to be heard. She closed her eyes. Please, the voice said. Take whatever you want, then the sound of a fishing knife...."(From the book)... "Among the Christians forgiveness is everything... In the Eastern cosmology the Lady will come to you and bathe your wounds and listen to your suffering, but she will absolve you of nothing. Absolution comes in the next life if you live within the path."The writing was really beautiful, and the lyrical descriptions of the land and nature, the customs, culture of these invisible people, and even the senseless violence (sometimes leading to death) were breathtaking. It helps to have prior knowledge of the division of North and South Vietnam, the Japanese and French occupation, the arrival of the American military forces that attempted to prevent the spread of communism. Maps were included, dates and timelines would have been helpful as a reference point for this rare and unique novel and reading experience.

She Weeps Each Time You Are Born is an ageless and singular tale about the life of Rabbit, born in a grave to a mother already dead 3 days. Vietnam, her homeland, one vast graveyard. From the moment she comes into the world in 1972, Rabbit is connected to those forever underground. She traverses the lands the dead haunt and where the living are haunted. She is blessed or cursed (depending upon one's point of view) with a preternatural connection to souls and to animals.The author's narrative is tidal in nature, with a Buddhist emphasis upon existence's circularity and impermanence. Time and life ebb and flow. Vietnam seems the cusp between The Physical World and The Spirit World as we move back and forth between French Indochina, the American war years and present day reunified Vietnam. The country and its people punished regardless of whom its master might be. Brief interludes of happiness like her parents' and her own for a Russian named Levka are transitory and evanescent.In the genre of magic realism, the author shifts seamlessly from the quotidian to the eternal and makes the impossible utterly believable. If Vietnam is the borderland between life and death, the physical and the spirit, then Rabbit is a sort of medium and docent. A Vietnamese Charon ferrying spirits across to the next existence but keeping their lives memory alive inside her. She is just one more orphan displaced by war and so much more. The quote below describes Rabbit aged three when told to say goodbye to her dying grandmother: "Rabbit rubbed her ears. The world went black like the moment before a curtain lifts. Gingerly she put her tiny hands on her grandmother's face.Through the fabric of the old woman's shirt she brushed the spot where Ba's scar gleamed next to her heart. A dog barked in the distance and then a flash and then everything. Ba's life spooling into her granddaughter in the span of a human kiss."Later she speaks her first words: her grandmother isn't dead. I believed her. Later you are told how the grandmother came to have the scar above her heart--it will make yours ache. It is one of many moments that plumb the depths of the reader's compassion. The ordinary people, anonymous combatants and defenseless bystanders in war are ennobled throughout this startling work. She illumines the unknown, introducing us to people we've never met but with whom we become intimately connected.It occurred to me midway that Rabbit is the author herself. Later it seemed more likely she is the tourist coming to Vietnam to uncover her own story. Regardless, Barry is proof positive a writer, a story teller embraces the vital task of telling painful and terrible tales. They do by suffusing themselves to imagine and summon those people's suffering of others. Perhaps Barry had no such notion when she began this book but she has accomplished the feat all the same. This is fiction at its finest telling stories that are individual and universal about a person and a people. A powerful and important book.

Simply said; It was sooo good! It was an all-night read for me and I really enjoyed it.Criminal attorney, Shari Carmen is a smart, assertive dark-skinned beauty who is at the top of her game in her professional life. After too many disappointing romantic encounters; she is not looking for nor is she expecting love at this point in her life.She is active in her church's prison ministry, plays a mean tenor sax in the church's bsnd and is part of a loving family of sisters who support one another. When the handsome Garrett Nash, a U.S. Marshal relocates to Philadelphia from Boston and joins her home church; she doesn't give him a second thought.But he is smitten with Shari from the first time he lays eyes on her. Shari doesn't give his "love at first sight" attraction much weight from the very beginning. Shari suspects that there is more to Garrett's story beneath the surface and is lukewarm to his advances.However; Nash is persistent in his quest to win her heart. Northwest sexologist Theresa Reed gives us a fine retrospect of her most insightful essays and experiences from the 90's to the early beginnings of the new millennium.Never one to refrain or pull punches, the works, often laced with acerbic and playful humor and a jaundiced eye toward righteous religion zealots, contain autobiographical history, political innuendoes, guidance on safe play, and the personal experiences as they happened at the time,The conclusion of each chapter contains a brief sample of what's probably her best "hate mail". Only confirming what a sex negative society we really are, based more on fear of the unknown, ignorance, intolerant upbringing and hate, as opposed to love.I personally feel her play parties and workshops provide a public service of a sort to those who feel misunderstood, isolated, or looking to spice up their love live/s in a non judgmental and safe environment. And safety will be paramount given how many will seek to experiment given the popularity, once again, of the aforementioned film.You may not agree with every thing you read or still come away scratching your head as to why some folks participate in activities contrary to the norm. But you'll have to admit Theresa is as fine a spokesperson for love and acceptance as there is regardless of gender, race, creed, etc.
