I fell in love with the words of a writer who is present and accountable and alive in every sentence. Never before have I been so disarmed by the passion and fire contained within and behind the words of any writer. It's as though she couldn't wait to get each word down, attacking the paper in describing her immigrant experiences, her neighbors, her family, herself. Because Anzia Yezierska was not afraid to expose her soul, I was taken on a journey that walked me though the life of one proud, passionate, immigrant woman. I was able to hear her fears, triumphs, pain and disappointments through her authentic and authorative voice. Passionate and real. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Sol It's good to see Yezierska getting so much attention these days, and even better to see her books back in print. Hungry Hearts is the collection which earned Yezierska a Hollywood contract and gave her the title "Cinderella of the Tenements," but her skills with the short story are not as strong as her skills with the novel. If you are just getting interested in Yezierska, I'd recommend Bread Givers or Salome of the Tenements, both of which have also recently been reprinted.

The golden country By Luc REYNAERT AnziaYezierska's short stories sketch a moving picture of the simple dreams of the poor European (would-be) immigrants into the US at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century: `For hundreds of years the persecuted races all over the world were nurtured on hopes of America ... the far-off golden country.'These dreams get over the top when messages from overseas are reporting real fairy tales. However, the realities encountered in that golden country turn out to be all too grim. The immigrants have to work in sweatshops, are exposed to blood-sucking landlords or can find a job as maid for all trades in family households. In `The lost Beautifulness', a landlord raises the rent after a tenant painted her flat anew with her own hands and money. She complains. In `Wings', a young girl meets her `beau', but sees he more in her than a poor little immigrant? In `Hunger', a young girl leaves her uncle for work in a sweatshop, `a hope - it lifts me on top of my hungry body - the hunger to make myself a person.'In `The free Vacation House', a family is confronted with the bureaucracy of charity. In `The Miracle', parents sell the family jewels to buy a ticket to the US for their daughter. In `Where Lovers Dream', a father tries to force his son to break with his girlfriend: `Marry yourself into that beggar house!'In `Soap and Water', a school wants to withheld a diploma for a girl because of her poor appearance. She had worked at night to pay her tuition: `drops of sweat and blood from underpaid laundry work.'In `The Fat of the Land', a mother fights for a better life for her children. But when those get rich, they are ashamed of her `fish smell' and are insulting her for their poor childhood. She leaves her beautiful country house, but will she come back?In `My own People', a writer finds her true inspiration in daily life.In `How I found America', the author sees freedom around her, but also `how the fear for bread had dehumanized the last shred of humanity' and `thousands upon thousands crushed by injustice'.These lively and sometimes very bitter short stories continue to shine through their `human touch'.Not to be missed.

Inspired by the strength and love of his older sister, he realizes the power of education to lead him to a life he has imagined for himself--the pinnacle of his ambition is to graduate from Harvard University. That he does not get this opportunity, devastating as it is to his life plan, does not prevent him from becoming a beloved doctor, loving husband and father. Although well-meaning, he stumbles in his relationship with his two children as he tries to interject his own preferences into their lives. A deeply felt story of love, the novel examines the boundaries of a family, of its secrets, of the complex web family relationships can weave. Finally, the novel examines the damage that abandonment, poverty, and childhood neglect can do to a human personality, damage that sometimes cannot be overcome.

Promises of Love, by David Selby

Review Life can be hard, especially in impoverished areas, and that is exactly what Daniel Friend experienced as a child. Promises of Love by David Selby follows the sorrows and successes of Daniel from the death of his young mother from a botched abortion to his old age, introspectively analyzing his life. Raised by his sister, Dee, after their father s suicide, Daniel strives to succeed academically and professionally, in spite of the negative, defeatist attitudes he had heard constantly up to that point. Becoming a prominent surgeon and returning to the mountain country of his youth, Daniel finally marries, has a family, and continues to strive to be the best he can be. Unfortunately, that means guiding his children according to his plans and dreams even though that path is not necessarily the right one. The question becomes, what is the promise of love when someone is ruled by strong mental will and specific dreams?

Social and cultural expectations change over time and Promises of Love by David Selby offers an intimate look at this process in action. From the post World War II poverty in mountainous Appalachia through the protests of the 1960s and beyond, the world changes around Daniel Friend without him really accepting it. Deeply insightful and meticulously detailed, Promises of Love includes you in the main character s struggles through the years so that you can feel all the pain, hope, disappointment and joy as Daniel lives out his life and pursues his dreams. It is said that the unexamined life is one that is not worth living, but at what point does the examination get in the way of actually living your life? Promises of Love is a well written and engrossing story that provides you with a wonderful opportunity to ponder that question through Daniel s eyes and leaves you taking a good look at your own opinions and choices. The impact of this story lasts well beyond the last page. --Melinda Hills, Readers' Favorite

Great new book from Sammy Franco By TFLReader I have been a huge fan of author Sammy Franco's "Widow Maker Program" and heavy bag training series for quite some time. His books have given me priceless training on self defense, personal protection and extreme fitness. Just when I thought he couldn't possibly come up with something new, he releases this amazingly cool attack training based on the legendary Bruce Lee's methods. The five methods taught here are very well explained with great photographs to demonstrate the moves. I have done my share of martial arts training and this was new material for me and another great read from Franco. Definitely recommend.

I found plenty of things useful for self-defense here and the 5 methods of attack are really nicely explained and valuable. I think anyone can learn these and they are truly powerful and can help one feel more confident knowing them. Definitely glad I stumbled on this one, I would highly recommend it.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Amazing and detailed, this is a no nonsense look at Martial Arts. By Heather G Bruce Lee is known far and wide as a Master – his skill at Martial Arts gained international renown, a film career and legions of fans, even long after his death. But how did he do it? As a writer, I delve into various fields for research and understanding, one of which has recently landed me on the doorstep of the more ‘physical’ aspects of writing. In my hunt, I ran across “Bruce Lee’s 5 Methods of Attack” by Sammy Franco, an author that I have read numerous times regarding MMA and other tactics. This book, like Franco’s others, did not disappoint. While I am not a fighter, I have gleaned valuable information that will help me in my writing career. For those that ARE in the physical fields, this book is a gold mine of advice, information and insight. From philosophy to innovation, methods and practice and – of course- complete details on implementation, this is a book that provides a full education for any seeking to know more about Lee’s amazing concepts.

From Library Journal This dandy little hardcover of Carroll's twisted tale is a facsimile of his original handwritten and illustrated manuscript.Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. The publication of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 brought Carroll a certain level of fame, although he continued to supplement his income through his work as a mathematics tutor at Christ Church, Oxford College. Carroll s whimsical characters and nonsensical verse resonated with Victorian-era readers, and his books continue to be enjoyed by numerous modern societies dedicated to his promoting his works.

By Monika My first exposure to Lewis Carroll's classic children's story was through the 1951 Disney film adaptation "Alice in Wonderland," which I watched repeatedly as a child. The creative quality of the story never failed to fascinate me, and I kept going back despite my deep-rooted terror of the frightful Queen of Hearts, who always gave me nightmares! However, it was not until recently, as an adult, that I ever picked up the book/s upon which that film was based. In some ways I wish I had read it when I was younger, as the book certainly makes a great deal more sense than the movie does (as much sense as a story of this sort can, anyhow), but thankfully this book is unique in that it is just as enjoyable for adults as for children. The story is actually spread across two books, here contained in a single volume. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was first published in 1865 and relates the events that take place after young Alice falls asleep during her lessons and dreams of following a white rabbit down a rabbit hole. Alice encounters all manner of strange creatures in her dream, and finds herself in all sorts of curious predicaments where common sense fails and the nonsensical comes to be expected. There is no central, concrete storyline, but rather Alice moves rapidly from one bizarre situation to the next before waking once more and relating the whole adventure to her sister. The second of the two books, "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There," appeared in 1871 and is very similar in nature to the first, though having a slightly different plot. Here Alice steps through an ordinary looking-glass one day, only to find herself in a world where, if you wish to get anywhere, you must walk in the opposite direction! Walking toward your desired destination only gets you further and further away. Also, interestingly, the land which Alice has entered is essentially a giant chessboard, and she must move through the different squares to reach the other side if she wishes to become a queen (which she does). The characters Carroll created in these two stories are some of the most strikingly unique and unforgettable in the world of literature. Alice herself, based largely on Alice Liddell, a real-life child of whom Carroll was very fond, is a wonderful heroine that you can't help admiring. Throughout all of her backwards and upside-down adventures, she remains ever sensible and analytical, always trying to reason her way out of the most unreasonable situations. Other characters a reader won't soon forget include the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Dormouse, the Cheshire Cat, Bill the Lizard, the Caterpillar, the Duchess and her peppery cook, the aforementioned Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, the Gryphon, the Red and White Queens, the talking flowers, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Sheep, Humpty Dumpty, and the Red and White Knights. Carroll also created many fascinating new creatures in his stories, including bread-and-butterflies, rocking-horseflies, "slithy toves," "mome raths" and more. What I find most intriguing, as an adult reader of these books, is Carroll's brilliant use of wordplay and symbolism throughout the stories. Nearly everything has some sort of double meaning. There are hidden messags and subtle witticisms on every page. Carroll also includes several parodies of what were well-known songs and rhymes in England at the time. Young children will love the books for their fantastic qualities and imaginative inspiration, but most readers will not pick up on the many puns and jokes until they are a little older, so these stories really do have something to offer to anyone, no matter what age. I'd highly recommend the book to any reader - and be sure to get an edition that includes the original illustrations. This review refers to the 2004 Barnes & Noble Classics printing, with introduction and notes by Tan Lin.

Kauffmann There is one thing that all potential customers must keep in mind when buying any Alice book: Do not purchase one that does not include the illustrations of John Tenniel! This edition includes all of them and the quality of the reproductions on the pages are excellent. Tenniel's illustrations help add to the childish excitement of Carroll's stories and will be especially invaluable to teenagers and adults, having just by nature of growing up lost some of the imaginative innocence, that ability to stretch reality, that we all possessed as kids.Of course, the illustrations wouldn't mean jack if they didn't have a captivating story to work with. Carroll's amusing tale of nonsense is targeted as a kid's book, and that is always where many of our fondest memories of it will remain, but as a college student reading it I was amazed by its power to suspend reality and return me to a level of imagination that I had simply thought I lost somewhere along the way. The trip down the rabbit hole can be quite a different experience from a different point of view. This particular edition also includes a good introduction and very helpful explanatory notes organized chapter by chapter. The introduction and notes offer insights to Carroll's life and his relations with the real life Alice and her family that, from a student viewpoint, reveal an interesting and more personal side of the Alice tales.

The following story is based on my interactions with a grandfather who sexually abused his granddaughters. I worked with him for close to one year at my private practice. My goal is to offer the public a sample of how sexual predators think and operate. My intent is not to scare people, but to provide insight that will raise awareness. Accepting reality can make a difference in how we think and make decisions as clarity and understanding are the key components in making sustainable changes. The details in this book can be very disturbing. Yet, this is the reality of those we live among. Be safe and take part in raising healthy children so the epidemic of sexual deviance stops before it is created.

In the very first paragraph, there are two glaring grammatical errors. Does this educated expert not use an editor? I'm not entirely sure how this can be marketed as a book. At best, it is a second hand anecdote with absolutely no explanation, substance or theory. What exactly is the purpose of this piece? Just to tell a dirty story with the shock value of a grandfather encouraging a child to touch his penis in the shower? I honestly just don't get it.

A short novella, it sits firmly in the horror genre and is unique for Eliot being written in the first person. The narrator, Latimer, believes he has the ability to see into the future and read other people’s thoughts. He finds himself attracted to Bertha, his brother’s fiancé, for the simple reason that he cannot discern her thoughts and motivations. When the brother dies, Latimer marries Bertha, only to discover that she is hardly innocent.

Must Read Melancholy Romance By Bubba_Holtzkopf Wow...This book had me saying wow early on, and perhaps this was the first sign that I was in the presence of significant literature. Basically, George Eliot (literature buffs know this is Mary Anne Evans) strikes you in 'The Lifted Veil' immediately with a somber punch worthy of Edgar Allen Poe, followed by drama, romance, and a hint of the mystic. The tone remains constant in it's dark mood, but this did little to dampen my enthusiasm as a reader. Already this book has climbed into my top 20 short stories involving romance.I really would hate to spoil your reading of this great tale with spoilers, but suffice it to say the allusion of the title is referring to the marital veil primarily, and not the veil of death, although that could be also intended on a lesser note. So, basically, I would consider this a great read for anyone ever contemplating marriage, as a cautionary tale. It really does have some good insight into that, as well as the 'pecking order' of family relationships.Overall, a period romance with a very personal, very somber, slightly mystic and very male feel to it, which distinguishes it greatly.Highly recommended.

A shy rich man with a weak, sickly, poetical nature expects to die very soon from a heart condition in 1850. He doesn't expect any of his three servants to respond to his bell for help because he understand people and knows that they are involved in their own affairs. He uses these moments alone to tell his life story. He realized that he had unique abilities when he was young. He had visions of the future, what people will do and say, long before they do or say it. He also had the gift of insight. He could understand people's character and pierce the veil of their faces and false conduct. Yet, he couldn't understand Bertha for many years. Bertha was a thin and beautiful girl, a year older than he, with whom he fell in love. She could be charming. Yet, she was self-centered, negative, heartless, satirical, sarcastic, opinionated, vain, and loved power, but he saw none of this. He was nineteen and she twenty. She was engaged to his brother who was twenty-six. She admitted to him that she didn't love his brother. But he was in ecstasy with her and saw no faults. He even ignored a vision that he was married to her and she mistreated him. His brother died in an accident and he married Bertha without knowing if she loved him, although she said she did. After some years of marriage, when his father died, he was suddenly able to see what his wife Bertha truly was, that she despised him. Then life became unbearable, as he foresaw in his vision. He noticed a strange relationship between Bertha and her servant. Then, when the servant was dying, his friend, a doctor, told him that the servant would expire that night and asked for permission from him to insert blood into her artery after she died to see what happens. She died, the blood was inserted, she came back to life, turned to Bertha, who just entered the room, and yelled at her, "You mean to poison your husband...the poison is in the black cabinet...I got it for you." Then she died again, and he separated from Bertha after dividing his property with her, equally. Reflecting back at the servant's resurrection, he asks, "Is this what it is to live again...to wake up with our unsatiated thirst upon us, with our unuttered curses rising to our lips, with our muscles ready to act out their half committed sins?" Can this story be read as a parable, a commentary on marriage, that men are unable to unveil the character of their wives' feelings, even though they can understand other people, that love blinds?

I began the short story not knowing what to anticipate, and found Stolen Generation captivating. The dedication resonated with me, and set the tone for the journey: "You are loved; you are worthy; you are human." We are then progressively reminded of the heartbreak of humanity through history, which accumulates into modern horrors in Chapter 9. The parallel is effective and vivid. Stolen Generation would be intense and poignant expanded into a novel; it is fast-paced, and I wanted more! I would have liked to haven gotten a little more pulled into the lives of the nameless representations of humanity's stolen generations. The concept of the short story was original and purposeful, which I appreciate. A good read!

And felt I was there with the young woman of the modern times. It was like what happened to her was happening to me. Daunting experience, so well written. The stories are written with scenes like in a movie, the scenes so real. I like the contrast of the different cultures of Australia, The Deep South,The Indian Territory in the U.S. and Auschwitz. Each individual tale placing me within the characters unique world and yet with the same experience of their loss. The author has done such a great job of depicting each moment of suffering so well. This is a thought provoking book. The images will remain with me forever. Love the message, love the tension throughout each story. Wonderful!

Poignant Look at the Human Condition By amznreviewer McGriff's story, Stolen Generation, is perhaps the most thought provoking, poignant short manuscript I've ever read. I found the style and format engaging, taking me back in time to historically significant events before pulling me back to the future and comparing tragedies taking place today. She is a gifted writer with much to say about the current human condition. I will be looking for more from this author. This is something you'll read in only a few minutes, but if you're like me, you'll read it over and over and want to share it with friends.A beautifully presented literary work worthy of your time - highly recommended read.

The weather was warm for March in the Smokies, or so the woman at the diner counter informed Jack Drum-mond when he commented on the heat as he took a seat at the counter and scanned the large menu board behind her. She was a broad-shouldered woman in her late thirties, with work-worn hands and a plain but pleasant face devoid of makeup. The name tag over her left breast read Darlene."Won't last," Darlene warned in a hard-edged drawl as she pulled a pen and order pad from her apron pocket. "We'll get another frost in time to kill off all the daffodils that'll be blooming." She shrugged. "Spring in Tennessee."Jack could tell Darlene a few stories about spring in Wyoming that would curl her lanky brown hair. Late-season snowstorms piling up in feet, not inches. Winds so strong and cold they seemed to blast the skin right off your face. But he refrained, ordering a steak sandwich and a sweet tea, his gaze sliding past the beer menu without snagging for even a second.Progress.The bell on the door behind him tinkled as another customer came in from the March sunshine. A woman's voice called out, husky and lightly tinted with a Texas twang. "Darlene, do you have the to-go orders for The Gates ready?"The skin on Jack's neck prickled, and he swung his head slowly toward the newcomer, certain he'd imagined the familiar tones he'd heard in the feminine voice. She'd be too old or too young, too tall, too short, hair too red or not red enough, wrong eyes, wrong face, wrong build. But not this time. In the middle of Purgatory, Tennessee, on an impromptu fishing trip with his brother-in-law's family, he'd finally tracked down Mara Jennings. He'd been looking for her for four years to make amends. It was one of the twelve steps, one he hadn't taken where Mara Jennings was concerned. But now that she was standing right in front of him, so close that he could lean forward a few inches and touch her arm, his tongue felt like lead and his pulse began to roar in his ears. She must have felt his scrutiny, for her cool blue eyes flicked his way, her own gaze resting a brief moment on his face before sliding back to the waitress at the counter. She hadn't recognized him.Was that possible? He'd been a little lax about getting his hair cut since he left the rodeo circuit, and he'd put on ten pounds now that he wasn't shooting through gates on the back of a thousand pounds of pissed-off beef and trying to hang on for eight seconds of sheer adrenaline. But it wasn't his face that had gotten crushed under Coronado's rolling body. His looks hadn't changed that much. Then her gaze snapped back, her brow creasing slightly as her eyebrows dipped to a V over her nose.He managed to find his voice. "Hi, Mara."She froze in place for a moment, her expression going completely blank. Then she gave a short nod. "Hi.""So, this is where you disappeared to. I wondered." He licked his dry lips. "I was so sorry to hear about your sister."A flicker of pain darted across her still face, so brief that he wondered if he'd imagined it. But when she spoke, her voice came out on a soft rasp. "Thank you.""I'm sorry about everything, really. Especially the way things ended."Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Forget about it, Jack.I have."The hardness in her tone shouldn't have come as a surprise, given how badly he'd messed up the last time they saw each other. And the cool indifference should have been a relief, a reassurance that his selfish stupidity hadn't crushed her spirit completely. But he couldn't shake the feeling that something was very, very wrong with Mara Jennings."I know it's been a long time, but I'd really like to talk to you a little more, try to explain a few things. Could you make some time for me?"She shook her head. "Jack, I've moved on.""There's still the matter of the money."Her brow furrowed again, her eyes darting toward him before sliding away. "This is about money? Really?" She sounded confused. Now he knew something was wrong."Seven thousand dollars, Mara. Plus four years of interest?"Her lips pressed to a thin line. "Was there anything in writing?"He stared at her, unease twisting a knot in his gut."No, of course not. You know there wasn't." He took a step closer to her, unable to stop himself. "Are you okay?"Alarm flickered in her eyes before she turned toward the waitress, who'd just returned to the counter with a box filled with individual brown paper sacks. She didn't answer his question as she pulled out a credit card and handed it to the waitress to process. While Darlene was running the credit card through the system, Mara continued to ignore him, her small, round chin lifted with a hint of haughtiness he'd never seen in Mara Jennings during the year he'd known her.He might not have changed much in four years, but clearly she had.She took the credit card back from Darlene, signed the slip and picked up the box of lunch bags, then turned toward the door without even glancing his way. She was going to leave without saying anything else, he realized.Part of him argued to just let her go. If she didn't want to deal with the past, he shouldn't make her.But there was still the issue of the money. Before he could keep his feet from moving, he'd stepped into her path, forcing her to stop so quickly she almost dropped the box of lunches she carried. He caught the sliding box and steadied it for her, his fingers brushing over hers. Her gaze snapped up to meet his, and she took a quick step backward. "What do you want?""I get that you don't want to deal with the past. I'm not asking you to forgive me or anything like that. But seven thousand dollars is a lot of money—""And you just said there was nothing in writing." Her husky voice was edged with disdain. "So you can't prove I owe you a damn thing. Now excuse me."She passed him quickly and left through the front door of the diner, passing Jack's brother-in-law, Riley Patterson, and his wife and child as they entered. Riley's craggy face split with a grin at the sight of Jack standing in the middle of the diner. "What did you do, strike out with the redhead?"Riley's wife, Hannah, lowered her son, Cody, to the floor so he could hurry over to Jack. Reaching down, he picked up the three-year-old, tucked him close and looked over his head at Riley. "Do you remember me telling you about needing to make amends to a woman I hurt in Amarillo?"Riley's smile faded. "Was that her?""I thought it was," Jack answered, remembering the cold, haughty air of the woman he'd just watched leave the diner. "I guess it is." He waved toward an empty booth, inviting them to take a seat. He settled onto the bench seat across from them, setting Cody down beside him. "But something very strange is going on.""Strange how?" Hannah asked before Riley could speak."Well, I brought up the seven thousand dollars, and she acted like she didn't remember it at all. Which was weird enough. But when I pressed her on it—" He shook his head, the flutter of unease in his gut returning. "She asked me if we put anything in writing, and when I told her of course not, she said I couldn't prove she owed me a thing."Hannah and Riley exchanged a quick look. "Are you sure you didn't misunderstand?" Riley asked."Believe me, I didn't." He shook his head. "Four years after the fact, she doesn't remember that I scammed seven thousand dollars from her. How is that even possible?"Don't panic. There's no need to panic. She entered through the front door of the two-story Victorian mansion on Magnolia Street, breathing deeply through her nose and releasing both air and tension through her mouth with each determined step. The office conference room was about ten paces down the narrow central corridor, and she timed her respiration accordingly—one breath, three steps. By the time she knocked on the door and received the invitation to enter, she had managed to present an outward air of calm. But inside, she was freaking out completely.Of all people to run into here in Purgatory, Tennessee—Jack Drummond? The cowboy with a heart of stone.God, she'd been loathing that name for four years, loathing even the mere thought of what he'd done, the wreckage he'd left behind. She'd even wished him a painful end underneath some bucking bronc or twisting bull more than once, but she'd never figured she'd actually find out what happened to him after he left the dust of Amarillo behind him.Well, now she knew. He was alive, well and disgustingly handsome. But what the hell was he doing in Tennessee? She entered the conference room quietly and set the box on the long credenza that took up most of the length of the nearest wall. Someone had already started a pot of coffee brewing, and she slipped back out of the conference room to retrieve a cooler of ice cubes for the two dozen bottles of water, juice and soft drinks lined up like soldiers at attention on one end of the sideboard.Halfway there, she heard footsteps behind her and shot a quick look down the hall. The Gates' CEO, Alexander Quinn, was coming up the hall behind her. his expression impossible to read. As usual. She turned to face him. "Did I forget something?""What happened while you were out?"She thought about trying to lie, but Quinn had spent a couple of decades in the CIA. Seeing through lies was part of his business. "I ran into someone from the past. From Texas."Quinn's eyes narrowed. "I see.""He wanted me to fork over seven thousand dollars. I didn't know what he was talking about, so I sort of faked it, but—""But you're not sure he believed you?""No."Quinn was silent for a moment, his hazel eyes holding her gaze without making her feel uncomfortable. For a man who had lived on lies and adrenaline, he had a calming effect on most people, and she wasn't immune herself. "What's his name?""Jack Drummond.""Can you give me a description?""Black hair, worn kind of longish. Brown eyes. Olive-toned skin. I believe he's part Shoshone—he's from up in Wyoming originally. He's not super tall—maybe six feet, six-one. Big shoulders, narrow waist and hips. Cowboy."Quinn arched one eyebrow."No, literally a cowboy. He was on the rodeo circuit back in Texas and the Southwest.""What's he doing in Tennessee?""I didn't ask, and he didn't say."Quinn looked at her a moment longer with that calm, thoughtful expression that made her feel as if he were trying to hypnotize her. Then he gave a short nod. "Go ahead and get the ice. Don't worry about Jack Drummond. He won't be a problem."She knew Quinn had the means to protect her from her past. And because he needed the skills she offered when she wasn't playing office gofer, she knew he'd be diligent about it.But Quinn couldn't erase the memory of Jack Drum-mond's dark eyes or sexy voice from her brain as she grabbed the clean cooler from the storage closet and started scooping ice into it.She might hate Jack Drummond's guts and never want to see him again. But she doubted very seriously she could ever stop worrying about him, now that he'd invaded her world again. Had meeting him here in Purgatory been nothing but a strange coincidence?Or was something a lot more sinister at work?"The Gates?" Hannah looked up from wiping Cody's lunch off his hands and face at Jack's question. "I wonder if she was talking about Alexander Quinn's private investigation agency. It's right here in Purgatory."Riley returned from grabbing more napkins from the counter and handed them to Hannah. "What about Alexander Quinn?""That private-eye agency he runs now—isn't it called The Gates?""Yeah, it is. Sutton Calhoun works there now.""Right." Hannah made another swipe at the mess Cody had made with his peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich. "He used to work at Cooper Security, but I think he was from up this way to begin with."Jack tamped down his impatience and kept his tone even. "So The Gates is a detective agency?""Yeah. Well, investigations and security, I guess. Maybe your friend Mara works there. You could probably ask that waitress and she could tell you where to find the place." Riley's gaze sharpened. "If that's really what you want to do.""I need to give her the money. It's sitting in my bank, taunting me."Hannah's lips twitched at his description, and he didn't really blame her for finding his description a bit melodramatic. When his sister-in-law had met him, not long after he'd left Amarillo, he was sober only a couple of months, and the call of the rodeo still roiled in his blood. She'd been in Wyoming on vacation, ended up in the middle of a serial murder investigation and had come close to losing her life. But Riley had been there, watching her back. Keeping her safe.Falling in love, after grieving for three long, lonely years.Jack's sister Emily had been Riley's first love. His first wife. Her murder had come damn close to destroying both Riley and Jack, though in different ways.Riley's response had been to close himself off to all but a few close friends. And to Jack. But Riley's growing obsession with solving Emily's murder had eaten away at Jack's soul. Solving the murder wasn't going to bring Emily back. And Emily had been all that was left of Jack's dysfunctional family. So he'd gone to Texas, moved his base of operations to a little town just west of Amarillo. He'd buried himself in boots and spurs and rodeo groupies who longed to ride a cowboy a whole lot longer than eight seconds. Then he'd met Mara Jennings, who was anything but a groupie. Fool that he was, he'd considered her a challenge he couldn't resist, when he should have run as far and as fast from a woman like her as he could. The groupies knew the score. They weren't interested in forever with a cowboy. They just wanted the excitement for a few days out of the year when the rodeo came to town.Mara Jennings had "forever" written in her pretty blue eyes and winsome smile, and he should have known he'd break her heart.Hell, maybe he had known it.He just hadn't cared at that point in his life."I've had some dealings with Quinn," Hannah said thoughtfully as she handed her slightly sticky son to Riley. "I could just casually drop by the agency to say hi, and if you just happened to be with me and your friend just happened to be there—""If you just happen to be matchmaking, Hannah, you can forget it. Mara Jennings is not the woman for me. She never was."That had been the problem."Well, maybe you could tell Quinn about the money you owe her, then," Hannah said."I think I'll just fly under the radar, if you don't mind. But good idea about talking to the waitress." He slid from the booth and headed to the counter, where the waitress was wiping down the surface with a clean rag.She looked up with a weary smile as Jack stopped in front of her. "Can I get you something else?""Actually I could use some directions. I have an old friend who works here in Purgatory at a place called The Gates—ever heard of it?""Sure, everybody has. Your friend one of the investigators?""Right." He searched his brain for the name Riley had mentioned. "Sutton Calhoun."

Until he runs into Mara, or a woman he thought was Mara. As the past indiscretions hunt Jack, he needs to make amends with Mara, and he goes after her. Just to witness an attempt to kidnap her. And from there, they are off to a wild run for their lives. The tension builds through the story. There are so many things that are uncertain, not least the fact, that MJ doesn't know how to, or who to, trust. So much information is unknown, so many players are unknown, it is hard to fight against something, when you are not sure what you are fighting against, and why. This uncertainty and confusion runs through the story, issues of trust, and the threat is constant. The run for their life is full of action and danger, without a moment's rest or peace. Some answers are forthcoming towards the end, but as the series continues from here, more clarity to the situation has to wait to be uncovered. The romance is more of a hint of one. Jack and MJ do have an attraction towards each other, but at times it feels more like MJ is playing games with him to get what she needs, or to hide from the truth, to get Jack's attention elsewhere. Slowly, as they get to know each other while on the run, the rare trust is building between them, and the feelings are deepening between them. I liked that in the end they are shown as a couple, even though the road to it was left to the imagination of a reader. The intense action, unraveling secrets, and layers of lies, even though a bit confusing at times, kept the interest through the story, that will be developed in the future books of The Gates series, yes, it ends in a sort of a cliffhanger~ Three Spoons with a teaspoon on the side[...]

Now it seems he is in for a different ride of a lifetime. A ride that has life hanging in the balance. He unexpectedly runs into an old flame, Mara Jennings. Which sets off a series of events that Jack never saw coming. One problem is that Mara isn’t anything like the woman Jack knew. She looks and sounds like Mara but is completely different now. The passions that are reignited between them aren’t enough to hide the fact that she is harboring a very big secret. She is also hiding out from an even bigger enemy. The truth may be the only way they will be able to stay alive. Then again the truth just might tear them apart permanently. This is a story that slowly builds at the beginning but once it catches some speed it doesn’t stop until the very end. It is part of a series but readers won’t have any problems following the story as it unfolds. This book has enough twists and turns to keep readers on their toes as it all comes out and reveals an ending that doesn’t disappoint in the least. While readers might guess some of the secrets there are enough others that will keep them turning the pages. Lots of drama, action, suspense and romance. Lots of violence and car chases. Did not know who to trust.I did figure out one of twists early on.Mara Jennings works for the Gates. Someone is after her. She does not know who to trust. She has a secret job to find a computer hacker. Only a few people know what she is doing.Jack Drummond can't believe he has found Mara. He needs to make amends to her from four years ago. Even though she does not want to even talk to him. Jack was a rodeo bull rider. He is determined to help Mara. This is a fast exciting read. It does have a couple love scenes.I want to go and read the first three books and look forward to reading the next book in the series.I was given this ebook to read from Net Galley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give honest review of Deception Lake.

'... the past was not yet done with here, I thought to myself; its problems drip-fed into the present, muddying it endlessly.' South Africa in a time of transition: a world of shifting boundaries and fluid identities, under siege from the relentless power of the past. In this evocative and finely crafted debut collection, De Villiers deftly probes the ambiguities of this changing country. From the older woman with her much younger lover, trapped in Johannesburg traffic during 'load shedding' - the new leveler - to the 'gap year' graduates seeking some kind of permanence abroad, each story manages to contain entire worlds. These are lives of unconscious longing; of individuals - often willingly - cast adrift from their history, animated here in poetic yet pared-down prose.

"The Chameleon House" by Melissa de Villiers By Amazon Customer In "The Chameleon House", one of the author's many skills is to employ simultaneously a telescope and a microscope in her writing about those who question their pasts and their futures. In "A Letter to Bianca", the central character recalls an apartheid South Africa on the verge of collapse: "The country was filled with a strange vibration; it shook like the skin of a drum." In a more intimate and revelatory moment, she sees: "...Disguised in the ripe shadows of the foliage, the shape of a marvellous creature, richly feathered and clawed, that I had not noticed before."The landscapes so vividly evoked in each story inform the character's discoveries about family, self and betrayal. In "The Inheritance", for example, a great fire in the Camdeboo area of South Africa reflects the narrator's inner turmoil. "...the hills were black and smouldering...there was still quite a lot of smoke... on the horizon, the highway snaked into another line of hills...it was beginning the get dark. I drove on... faster and faster, my hands shaking, sparks plucking at my heels."Memory is a motif throughout this rich collection. Additionally, de Villiers deftly balances nostalgic yearnings with a [sometimes reluctant] resolution to accept the present. In "Coelacanth", Anita (Annie) is given to musing: "A strange nostalgia... pushes me out to the secret places where I played as a child - the rusty garage roof, the coral tree...yet for all that... something pulls at me, something to do with the wide, electric world out there..."It is in one respect this "wide, electric world" with which de Villiers plays in this finely crafted collection that moves the reader from the smallest dust-bowl in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, to the brash bustle of Singapore. In perhaps the most powerful story of all nine on offer here, "Home", de Villiers wonders if one can "ever go home again", prefacing a tale of two sisters in Singapore with Horace's powerful declaration: "They change their sky, not their soul, who rush across the sea." Whilst the two have "slipped straight back into the roles they'd played as children", it's clear that like us all, they are grappling for a common meeting ground, as de Villiers makes clear in her conclusion: "As she approached the campsite, she realised that she had no recollection of where her sister lay in the dark... slowly, then with mounting panic, she zigzagged through the maze of tents, hoping to see some familiar feature that would tell her she was home."A gem of a book, like a small gold ring inset with the deep greens of Africa and South East Asia.

When I tangled across the shocking modern world, antiquity is fading enough. Only a few writers who dare to deliver us some enchanting voice. Roman Payne gives a beautiful speech here. The story surfs from an Attic born Nausea’s life since her very birth and her adventurous journey with the advices from her skilful father until the end of her career.

Thomas is not sort of something sold that you could take or otherwise. It is a point that will certainly transform your life to life a lot better. You will find in these pages much of your own genial and kindly wisdom allied to a certain philosophy of my own. How much of this latter springs from the inspiration with which you have furnished me you may guess for yourself. Those who have such a friend as I have will appreciate his help and encouragement the more for reading this book, which, because you have thus helped me to write it, I inscribe with your name. Your very sincere KEITH J. THOMAS. "BE not afraid of greatness,'' says Shakespeare.'' Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. '' Which are you? I will tell you. You were born great; you can achieve greatness if you will; and if you go about it the right way, you will have greatness thrust upon you. The mistake so many people make is to confuse greatness with riches. The great man can have all he wants, but he need not necessarily become rich. Carlyle was no more intended to be a millionaire than Andrew Carnegie was made to be a Milton. We cannot all be Nelsons, or Pitts, or Shakespeares, or Darwins, or Rockefellers, but we can all be great. If we want money we can get it, if we •want power we can get it: the only condition being that we should want it badly enough. Whatever our desire is, we must be prepared to give up all pleasure and all ease to attain it. Fortune is a hard mistress and will brook no rivals, but to the man who is prepared to serve her whole-heartedly she offers the sure promise of his heart's desire. When we look back over the pages of history and scan the records of the world's most successful men, we find that there is not so much wonder when a man rises from penury to supreme heights as when a man with wealth and influence does so. All the experience of the world goes to show that the lower down a man is on the ladder of fortune, the more likely is he to rise. The reason is that the rich man has so many distractions, and, more than this, does not have the same hard experiences which develop character and brain. As soon as a man makes up his mind that he will do something with his life, he changes over from a state of drift to one of action. It is easy to drift, but it is better to struggle, for the current of life drags men on to the rocks and into shallows unless they map their course along the right channels where the deep waters are that will bear them to their harbor.

This is a seminal work on self improvement and self reliance and Keith J. Thomas rivals Emerson on this topic. This is required reading for my children and is an excellent graduation present. Dear Reader, You might have come across various articles, blogposts and books on Herpes. I have seen books that dedicate the initial chapters in educating the reader about Herpes, its causes, symptoms and types. Sadly some authors have the nerve to give their books with cure and without cure where the one with cure is priced higher than the one without cure. This book is not going to talk about what Herpes is. It will not even discuss the types, symptoms and causes. This book is about the CURE! This book talks ONLY about the SOLUTION! There is NO magic pill.  It involves a LOT of cheap medicine you can find anywhere easily- herbal, ayurvedic and natural medicines you can find in your garden, kitchen, supermarket and stores that sells alternate medicines. And it contains directions about a series of simple activities like exercises, massages, breathing techniques, etc.  We will discuss the cure for Herpes which happens to be the cure for many sexually transmitted diseases (with slight modifications).  BEFORE you buy this book keep in mind the following. 1) I am NOT SELLING any product here or anywhere for that matter. Do not lose your money to any fraudulent impostor posing to be Richard Teddy Frank. I have NO plans to start a website until mid 2016. If I open a website, I will announce it on my author page on Amazon. Right now my hands are full with my practice and wellness centre, and I don't fancy having a website run entirely by the staff members. 2) I am NOT going to ask you to sign up with me for prescriptions or tailor-made charts. Medicines are prescribed here in this book. You can buy anywhere you want.  3) I am going to show you how to get cured of Herpes using the inexpensive things you find in your garden, kitchen, supermarket and stores that sells Indian medicine.  Be healed. God bless you! -Richard Teddy Frank
