Chance Meetings: Stories About Cross-Cultural Karmic Collisions and Compassion In this eloquent collection of stories, twelve different people from different walks of life discover how one chance meeting with a stranger can change a person forever. Drawing from her own Indian-American heritage, Madhu Bazaz Wangu examines the lives of ordinary people facing challenging circumstances—cruelty, prejudiced minds, twisted family relationships, unhappy marriages—and demonstrates how these situations transcend ethnicity and background as interactions with strangers force each character to look deep within themselves, often acknowledging painful truths and long-held secrets, in order to seize control of their own destinies and forge their own paths to independence and happiness. Madhu Bazaz Wangu poignantly weaves a universal message that ties the characters in these stories together, one that applies to anyone who has experienced poverty, jealousy, fear, prejudice, disillusionment, and above all, the feeling of being a foreigner, even within one’s own family. Story Summaries: Secret Healer: One small town boy’s journey from the innocence of childhood to the injustices of servitude before finding shelter with an old man. Chance Meetings: Stories About Cross-Cultural Karmic Collisions and Compassion, by Madhu Bazaz Wangu Review Madhu Bazaz Wangu's artistic and academic backgrounds pervade these stories. Art and religion, and the connections between them, are regular themes throughout... the pieces have... narrative drive... compelling moments. (Kirkus Review.com) Beautiful, lush, lyrical stories and rhythmic language transports and transforms--each story is an unforgettable journey. (Kathleen Shoop, IPPY Award-Winning Author of The Last Letter and After the Fog) A skilled practitioner, Madhu B. Wangu, writes from the marrow of her bones. In her collection, she conjures dream-like motifs of goodness, guidance, and the human condition. Her writing, infused with echoes of Hindu and Buddhist myths, is deeply satisfying and transformative. (Gwyn Cready, RITA Award Winning Author) Chance Meetings is an evocative and thought-provoking collection: A delicious blending of cultures, delicately rendered and rich with sensory detail. (Meredith Mileti, Author of Aftertaste)Chance Meetings by Madhu Bazaz Wangu is about how meeting one person can change or affect your life... Fascinating. "Cycle of Life." really touched my heart, especially since I too have wondered about my existence and understood it better once I became a mom. "The Thug" had a great message, do not judge people and spread gossip about them when you do not know the real story. Wangu's short stories left me with a good feeling. These are the types of stories that I will not soon forget. I highly recommend this book. (Jessyca Garcia for Readers' Favorite)

If that's true, then this wonderful collection of stories is like "Khichdi for the soul." There is nourishing wisdom stirred throughout, along with empathy for the human condition and an eye for the conflict inherent within ourselves, families and ethnicities. I found myself underlining sentences and earmarking pages as I followed Wangu's characters in their struggles to bring life back into balance as the universe brings them that which they resist. These are cross-cultural stories, set in India and the U.S., some incorporating myth and magical realism, others utilizing stark realism to reveal the immigrant experience. The stories are told using a variety of structures—a story spanning decades might be followed by one taking place in an hour, one is told with simple and parable-like brushstrokes while another almost has the feel of a personal essay—and I enjoyed the diversity. In each case, Wangu sets the stage deftly and draws the reader in with the first sentence. "Gauri's Freedom" and "A Precious Gift" were two of my favorites. A lovely collection filled with sensory detail that brings the culture of India to life on the page. I look forward to reading more from this author.

If you are like me and prefer to read novels, please don't pass these by. Each is so skillfully written that it leaves you with a powerful afterglow. Ms. Wangu not only entertains and delights, but provides spiritual insights; you can receive as much or little as you desire. The themes range from a young girl questioning the meaning of life to a casket maker who finds true success. In the final story, a mirror of the first, a woman defers to the will of another and discovers an entire new world--within herself. I recommend buying this book, not only for yourself, but for those you love as gifts. I am grateful for writers like Madhu Bazaz Wangu, who help us transform ourselves, who have suffered, yet have used that to access beauty within. I look forward to her debut novel, Immigrant Wife--coming soon!Cathy Corn, author of the Lilith and the Faeries Series: Blue Moon over Madagascar, Smell the Plumerias, and Faery: the Final Frontier.

A book of transformative storytelling By Amazon Customer In this eloquent collection of stories, Dr. Wangu weaves a rich tapestry of the human condition with the strong, clear language of myths. Whether it's a tale of an impoverished orphan in India with no family or friends to turn to in a desperate moment, or an elderly American woman imprisoned within the walls of illiteracy, each story hangs like a bead on a japa mala - for the reader to touch and be touched by the transformative power of storytelling. These are also stories of relationships and how we are affected by them: family, loved ones lost and new love found, the strength to forge new life out of a broken one, differing cultures. My experience, after reading the collection, was also one of cultural immersion. I now have a greater understanding and appreciation for the Indian culture and people.
